- Today we get a tour of Greg's Pike's Peak Race Car! This twin turbo diesel monster has 400HP and over 500 FT LBS of torque! We show off how Greg built this beast, and get to see it shred out on the street! This car is one second off the Diesel record at the famous Pike's Peak International Hill Climb, and will be back at it this year with a triple compound turbo setup! The powerplant is a compound twin turbo 2.0L TDI running over 50PSI of boost, coupled with a 7 speed, double clutch Porsche PDK transaxle!

Compound setups are all the booost.
@Tyson SeabrookAll you can focus on is that boost doesnt=flow and none of us are saying it does. 1 bar of boost is still an extra atmosphere worth of pressure being forced. The high boost is for response, not big power but that doesnt take from how cool it is that it has immediate boost response to almost 4 bar on a mostly stock engine. Thats impressive in itself before you consider there's a big volume low boost turbo in the mix that supports the higher power levels.

My point being you GHPC puts blood sweat n tears into the build, VS hoonigan that tosses dollars at someone and has little appreciation to what happens fabrication wise. they don't compare in my opinion

Said it before on Hoonigan, I'll say it again, I love this car. Perfect example of grassroots motorsport. Love the "VW parts bin" approach of building it as well, same thing the engineers did for the Quattro and Beetle rally cars back in the day. AWESOME!

I modified one of those for setting beads on tubeless bicycle tires.
Suprised it wasn't his methanol injection system that cools your turbo a bunch and would boost him prolly 50hp or more

If I can ever afford it, I want to build a 1988 Suburban with a Duramax & all the goodies 😁
I never had a desil truck but I like them.

Awesome setup. Now you definitely need to diesel swap the firetruck with a compound turbo to haul your projects.

When you think about his turbo setup from the perspective of Banks' laminar flow philosophy, it's hard to imagine how you can fit so much power into such tight quarters. All the right angles and 180 degree bends, and directing charge air through a wastegate, it robs a lot of energy.
Then I start thinking maybe that's why he only loses 60hp at high altitude, because lower air density will interfere with that potential energy less?
Anyway, I'm really impressed!
Got to see this beast during the PPHC while helping with the Novembre racing open wheel car. Super awesome bug to watch race and even more insane to hear!

@@chriskue3285 You know what I mean.. lol.. There's no way it has the stock suspension... The interior is completely stripped, its tube framed. There's literally nothing left, even the seats are out.
That's pretty cool. Every part touched in some way... a true racecar! Imagine how fast that thing would be if he got an intercooler that can handle the air load! If it's rolling coal at sea level it has to be super rich at the top. I wonder what the EGT's at the deltas. Trim that fuel or give it the air it desperately wants! :-)
Back in the Walter Röhrl 1987 days, Audi did also run one of the very first PDKs (developed for the 962C Le Mans car iirc) in the Pikes Peak Quattro S1 Evo, for the same reason, not loosing boost.

Very very interesting video. When you guys lifted the back revelling the powertrain you looked like you needed a mop to clean up from your drooling over that car's motor. Man those turbos sure do sound sweat when they spool up.
So I have a question for you boys, when and what are you going to build next so you can pile some turbos into it? Whatever it is I'm sure that it will be one hell of a ride watching the whole crew working together on the next great ride. Who knows maybe you can take it to Pikes Peak for a run-up that great big hill. A lot bigger than the little ones around your place
