This is what the OneR system is basically. If you get a scratch on it, you can buy just the lens and not replace the entire camera system. Yes, the sensor and lens are a single unit, but this is a waterproof + component design already. At some point, things have to be together and sealed. Just about every other action camera system is all in one. An unrepairable lens means replace the entire camera -- not just one part. Also...just use this repair technique. It's not hard at all. Maybe you'll have to ask a neighbor if they have a rotary tool (usually just called Dremel) if you don't want to invest in one yourself, but I happen to already have the tool with a basic polishing kit.
Just a small warning though. I did the same thing before but the other issue is that you end up removing the lens coating. For most shots it's fine but what happens is you end up seeing a halo of the lens itself. Still better than scratches though. If they designed it with removable lenses, I'd be happy to pay $50 a lens! The protective lenses they sell show up in the video. All that beign said,I'm still buying the next one they come out with!!!!!
Hi Leo, yes, when i started with the polishing i got some blurry patches but then i kept doing it and i managed taking away around 90% of them which don't make me totally happy but i find it acceptable. I also agree with you that this cameras should offer replaceable lenses because from the day i scratched it, i got the protective covers and they are always visible despite how clean they are. I guess they made them like this to cash more from us when we are forced to buy new cameras 🙄. Many thanks for leaving your experience here, it helps to others for sure. Best regards from Alicante, Spain
This was actually my first thought when I saw videos like these. Lenses aren't just glass. They're glass specifically designed for taking photos & videos. There's a process that goes into it that you can't just buff away.
HEADS UP.... coating will come off your camera lens, lens will be worse than with few scratches....on my lens ive had minor hairline scratches. after watching this video i gave it a try, result is super awful light breaking, especially from the light source. do not do it unless your camera is heavily damaged.
I tried this too on my EVO and it got the scratch out but took the coating off now I get a distracting reflection of the inner camera lens in my footage. 😢 Has anyone figured out how to re-coat the outer lens?
@@nightbreedent very costly, New module needed, never get it scratched in the first place, never polish it... Last resort is a new module, i would say its vacuum sealed. Regarding 360 lens, polishing and coating by a company is not cost effective
Hi. I followed your tutorial for some light scratches and I ended up loosing that gloss coat and the result is worst than before. I get blurry everywhere. Did you loose that coat too? Shall i keep trying to get more even. Please let me know. thanks
The more noticeable effect of scratches is streaks from any bright lights. My GoPro looks fine in the day but at night it's a streaky mess. Does polishing the lens cause distortion from the now misshaped glass?
That’s what I’m thinking as well. And I think the obvious answer is yes. And maybe it’s just me but I think it’s noticeable in the video as well. After he polishes it, and moves it, there seems to be some distortion
The vulnerability and difficulty of repairing and replacing the X2/3 lenses is a major problem in describing it as an "action camera". In truth, it is a fragile camera that can take great action shots. It certainly can't be placed in the same category as a GoPro as an action camera. Buyers beware.
How to deep scratch in one of my lenses and gave this technique a try. Definitely took out the scratch but unfortunately I'm getting the same halo effect because of the coating being removed.
I don't think it's UV coating. However I believe it's AR coating, or Anti-reflective coating which makes light reflections on the camera less visible. which can be solved with a lens guard with an AR coating.
It works! But the solution is not perfect. I found that by polishing the lens you will also remove the anti reflective coating, which is used to prevent camera glares.
I have two tiny chips (white dots) on one of the lenses of my Insta360 RS 1Inch 360 Edition. I don't see any discoloration in the footage, only when I direct a bright light straight onto that lens, I can see two circles in addition to the usual lens flare, like a bokeh effect. Do you think it's worth polishing? Will it yield results? Or could I make it worse?
Looks like due to the removal of thin layers of glass the lens creates a slightly warped image now. I wrote Insta 360 and they will swap the lenses for you 100$ each. Better buy some lens protectors afterwards and apply them.
Just scratched my RS.. do they swap lenses for RS too? Buying another full 360 mod for RS costs around 400-600 AUD. So comparing to that, 100 dollars seems not so dang expensive.
Looks like i need to polish mine. My insta360 has been sitting on my mouse pad and rubbed through that coating it came with, I didn't even do anything cool

just break lense out completely and glue on lens protectors...
With this technique, is there no risk of damaging the UV protection and causing to appear an aura in the videos?
You can see the warping. The deeper the scratch the worse the light warping will be
At 10000rpm patiently, apply whole surface until antiglare layer is totally gone.
