  • Insta 360 cameras has a lot of merits especially for the adventure seekers. Unfortunately, the lenses are not one of them. Because each lens has to capture a 180° view of the surroundings to be able to stitch it, the lens has to protrude out of the body. This makes it prone to breaking when not handled properly.
Before the Insta360 x4, the older versions were not made of gorilla glass or tempered glass so it is easily scratched or broken. For something that costs over £300, it should at least have this kind of durability but no. You have to purchase the additional protection such as the sticky lens guard to protect the lens.
Another downside is that, it is not easy to get the lens repaired. If you go through the official Insta360 website, the nearest repair center for owners in the UK is in Hongkong! How silly is that! If your device is already out of warranty, you have to spend more than £200 to have it shipped and repaired. I have heard from one person who have done this that they were replaced with a new camera. It’s not a very bad idea right? However, I don’t want to have to spend £200 and wait for weeks to have it repaired every year or so. I would prefer buying a new model as the older versions will be phased out in a few years.
This is why I chose to repair it myself. I might want to buy the new model next year so for now, I’m sticking with this old model. I’m a do-it-yourself kind of person but repairing this has been an extra challenge. I didn’t think I could do it until I actually did it. I’m proud of myself 😁.
However, I wouldn’t recommend this for someone who has no experience with repairing tech stuff. You might not want to finish the job when you get to the lens removing part. It takes a lot of patience.
Anyway, I hope you learn something from this video.

Mine is damaged on the screen side. Wondering how easy it will be to do? There are no videos of repairs on that side

Good video thanks. Managed the change the lens. However, I could not screw the cap completely so bit of a gap left which might alter waterproofing. Will put length protectors on anyway from now on.

I’m not 100% sure on this but I noticed that when I’m changing the lens, there is no rubber seal around the lens. So if I couldn’t adequately screw it back, then potentially water can come. Also, there is only a tiny rubber seal around the back cover as I have said in the video so if someone doesn’t position it right to outline the back then it might not properly seal

Not everyone should do this, if you are not known to circuit changes/modification, avoid these kind of diy. it is very risky, it will damage your cam permanently

second that. However it is worth the risk if your Insta 360 camera is over 2-3 years old. These cameras aren’t meant to last and built to be disposable. Just like iphones, it is manufactured in such a way that it should be thrown out and replaced after a set number of use. Companies do this so you keep buying and buying their products every year for their profit and this is environmentally concerning. If you watch “Buy Now! The Shopping Conspiracy” on netflix, you would understand this.

Well, yeah, but when the lens is scratched up or cracked and the video is unusably bad, what's the downside of trying?
