  • I was blown away when I first entered a studio and heard what they can do in post-recording with drums. Here's an example.

    Shows that you can record drums with one mic and still sound good

      yeah that surprised me. i was dreading having to buy like 20 different mics but i dont think its that necessary

    What I love about this video is I listened to you play the drum track and thought 'I've heard that song a million times, I don't recall the high hat and cymbals being THAT prominent'. Then I pulled up the song and gave it a listen and sure enough, there it is. I find it interesting how different people can hear the same song so differently. I suppose my brain was more concerned with the guitar and vocals back then.

    Nice to see another guitar and drum player. Do a video on the benefits of learning multiple instruments. I've noticed my songwriting and guitar playing improved learning drums. Before, I would go full guitar wank to fill in the space. Now my songs are more balanced and my sense of rhythm is improved.

    That’s why I’m digging my electric kit. I can get that big mic’d up processed sound at half the volume (or less) of a standard kit.

    Mixing is important, but most music since the 80s sounds overproduced to me. I'll take the production approaches from the 70s any day over the super compressed albums with a wall of overdubbed guitars today. If you put on headphones, a good 70s album sounds like you are in the room with the band. You can hear the individual instruments and mixes have actual dynamics.

    • @TheArtofGuitar
      @TheArtofGuitar  2 года назад +8

      I agree, I try not to overproduce drums because I still love the natural sound they make but sometimes it's fun to crank those knobs. ;)

      That’s the spirit that I think most music today is lacking in, it’s such a subtle yet extremely important part of music

    • @Zerofluffsgiven
      @Zerofluffsgiven 2 года назад

      Not to mention the overproduced 80’s music is hard to replicate live if you’re in a cover band.

      @@certifiedschizophrenic8598 they lack in talent too. a song is the sum of all parts. you put together virtuosos but can't write a proper song what do u get? overproduced wankery. i'd listen to a well-written pop song over a 10 minute rock material that's going nowhere

    That's great man, I had a raw sound with my Tama Starclassic Birch Bubinga set because we didn't process the sound at all. It was disappointing to put it mildly. I will have to learn how to produce on my own to get a better feel for recording. Thank you.

    • @TheArtofGuitar

      You can use gates, or really muffle your toms with gels. In a DAW you can edit out all the open space on the tin tracks but gates are easier and do the same thing.
