the compressor is basically increasing the volume of the signal as the volume from the string decreases, which makes it sound like the strings sustain longer, sort of like plucking a string on an acoustic and moving the microphone closer as the sound fades.
One of the things I like about the Lick Library guys is how they all seem really cool, completely normal, down-to-earth, enthusiastic and actually likeable, unlike some musicians. This video was filmed during a full moon, hence Mike's scarily long nails ;-)
@KingTabor There are some demos here on RUclips. If you do a little web searching on the Wampler CS-3 mod you can find some pretty detailed message board postings with all the values and component locations that need to be modified. One thing is sure, it is a totally different pedal with just the higher quality caps in it. A lot of the hiss comes from the 4 IC's but mostly it's the cheap caps. Upgrade them and swap in 1% resistors and you've got an amazing compressor, I love mine now
Mile you should get your CS-2 modded by PedalMods here in the UK. Just had mine done and it's just totally brought it to life but kept the best parts of the character. Only cost me £35 inc postage. Unbelievable pedal now.
@LOMAZ5150 Hi, we actually interviewed Michael Angelo Batio and he provides free lessons in our Online magazine iGuitar. Its a free subscription magazine! Check out Issue 6 which features Batio! Will send you a link to the magazine - if anyone else needs that link just send us a message and will get back to you!
Lovely technique on your quick runs mister. Your Boss compressor has that fluttering noise in the signal when the compressor is activated. I've noticed that sound with an EHX model and a Pigtronix. But never with the Robert Keely. Highly recommended.
@SixStringHarmonies "Merely changing Tantalum/Ceramic caps to Metal-Film caps enhances the output and sound of the circuit". No more hiss from the CS-3! - Have u seen any web tutorials into this? THX!
@INSANESUICIDESOLDIER That's really a matter of opinion.....I have a CS-3 which I modified to Wampler's Indy-mod specs, and frankly, I would now put it up against any pedal comp on the market. The problem w/ Boss pedals is the cheap components inside. Their pedals are first rate designs by the best engineers in the industry. Merely changing the cheap Tantalum/Ceramic caps to Metal-Film caps enhances the output and sound of the circuit immensely. No more hiss from the CS-3!
@sirgerry Ain't it awesome with the mod?? I was listening to an Empress Comp a few months back and the whole time I was thinking..."My CS-3 sounds way better!". The squash it can get is really buried by the hissing and "tone-suck" that the cheap components bring to the table. It isn't like you have to do a total rebuild and swap everything. I only changed about 15-18 total components and it's perfect. Boss' designs are amazing. They should do a boutique line w/ better build quality.
6:21 is the compressor allowing him reach that really lasting note or is that all amp ?? i have a problem have to make a bend not last for more than 5 seconds cant tell if its the distortion of my amp that really weak or just plain useless
why is that ever guitar tutorial video or any guitar related video all ways has to start with the intro music of a heavey guitar sound .you never rarely see a video guitar intro with a clean sound. why people seem to think every guitar player likes to play heavey is beyond me
finger picking. I know alot of guys who actually use those acrylic nails that you buy at the connivence store too. its pretty weird for people who dont know whats its for to see hahha
@TheGlobuleReturns I have a right to express my inner feelings about the inferiority of 360p... I see now that the video has time to dwell in RUclips land, producing the fairly acceptable resolution of 720p
new pedals are pratically identical to the old ones, they continue to sell new ones so the price doesn't drop. i bought a cs2 at 20$ used just because the cs3 was out and people would get it...
Hearing this reminds me how I hate compression... I don't get why you would wanna squash your tone, I get the country thing but even so I never liked that sound. Guess it's all about preference. I had the cs3 for a day. It sucked.
That is one of the nicest tones I've heard (Clean and Dirty.) Reminding me why I love strats so much. Really beautiful, Cheers.
I could just watch this guy play for days, his tone is un real. Watching him makes me wanna go get my guitar and play for hours

This dudes hair is fantastic

I'm glad I subscribed to you guys. I look forward to every new video.
best guitar teacher in lick library...
Mike, you're a very adept player who I really enjoy listening to. Also, great knowledge and command of your sound... quite helpful thank you!

Thanks a lot, now I know what a compressor does, finally
Wich guitar is this?
4:40-4:50: I Feel You Bro

Some guitarists will grow their nails somewhat on their right hand so they can use them for various picking styles.
Yeah I was wondering what guitar it was. I think it might be a Charvel San Dimas, but could be any Strat type.
ive got that same CS-2 pedal, i saw it on the ground and i was like "hey, shit" lol
Awesome..Howard Hughes finger nails and Andy Gibb hair, can't wrong with that!!!!
HOLY SHIT. That dude can shed. That's amazing.
What guitar is that?
What strings does he use?
@dime0123 no, he is using a cs- 2 what i asked was if the cs-2 is better than the cs-3
Active pickups? Which?
From another video I found the guitar is "1989 Valley Arts Custom Pro".
what is the name of this dvd??
what kind of guitar is that?
is this better than the Cs-3 ?
what EMG is that in the bridge ? 81 ?
what amp is that?
Valley Arts guitar mate!
lol i didn't even watch the part about the pedals I just tried out that riff at 3:16 XD
I use this compressor but when I play chords the guitar sound get lost with the other instruments
The pedal must be good. But, it is important to play like this dude.
Guitar?
@imashelchazona It's some kind of guitar made by Valley Arts.
Why does he leave the nail in the left thumb?
I have the same guitar :D
cool :)
a compressor fattens up the sound and makes it sound more saturated and snappy. and you can make it sustain like crazy lol
@GRAYFOX348
Yup.
finger picking. I know alot of guys who actually use those acrylic nails that you buy at the connivence store too. its pretty weird for people who dont know whats its for to see hahha
haha, whats with the vampire thumb nail on your fretting hand?
Great video. Check out Jean-Paul Natural Compressor with Boss comparison
on YT.

G&L? Come on man, that's a Valley Arts for sure.
@Rafterman123 Nothing is wrong with 360.
It is a gorgeous G&L
@TheDarkSideOfTheEdo oh, thery're for playing an instrument called a GUITAR
@Rafterman123 Good for you! ;) (ironic thumbs up, followed by ironic clapping)

@eddgomezHaHa that's why there's a treshold
What is a compression pedal?
Its joe lynn turner lol
@INSANESUICIDESOLDIER cs3 is a compresion sustainer thats what exactly hes trying to explain about compressor lol..
That's for crumbling up resin and weed.
Hearing this reminds me how I hate compression... I don't get why you would wanna squash your tone, I get the country thing but even so I never liked that sound. Guess it's all about preference. I had the cs3 for a day. It sucked.
