Hey! A while ago I did some research and virtually created a pedalboard where almost every item was under 50$, sometimes well under. I'll mention a couple of the ones I found most interesting, both from XVive: The V9 Lemon Squeezer (compressor) and the T1 Golden Brownie (allegedly a vintage JCM 800 in a tiny box). I wonder if you know them and what you think. If you haven't heard of them, I hope this comment helps you to discover some new pedals! www.xviveaudio.com I'd also mention their Tube Screamer but it seems to be out of production currently. It was nice because it was at the same time a Fuzz pedal once you cranked the gain past 12 o'clock, according to the reviews.

In the 45 years since I played my first gigs, I've watched the pedal industry explode into a multi-faceted scene, catering for everyone from the multi-millionaire rock star, with more money than sense, to the kid saving their pocket money for their first overdrive. In the 70's, an MXR distortion plus retailed in the UK (from whence mine came), for what was then 2 weeks wages. But today, as your show so amply demonstrates, princes and paupers alike, can revel in the wonderful world of guitar effects. And thanks to people such as yourself, the hideous snobbery that so often spoils the enjoyment for the less financially fortunate, is turned on it's pompous ass, with proof (if it were needed), that great sounds are available, without a great bank account. Thanks again Josh, for keeping it real.
FWIW, I have a $30 (Australian, so probably about US$4.50) boost pedal by Kokko, that never leaves my board. A lot of the pedals in this episode, are a fair bit more expensive in Australia, but still reasonable. And its great to have the Guru of More Good give the nod to these cheaper expression machines.

I have it now. It's brutal lol.. Sucks all the bass out your signal into a cold metallic flange hell. Also, out of 10 pedals i have in the chain it makes the most noise, an ear piercing ring with paired with certain other effects. HOWEVER, you pump the bass up a bit and do some overdrive/compression before it hits this pedal and it's crazy good. Amazing. Will probably never switch it out, it's cherry on top of my heavy sound, the final layer before maybe an all encompassing stereo verb or delay at the very end of the chain. Helps me sound like Neil Young and the Horse at their heaviest and most psychedelic. That or Hawkwind. FK YEAH.

Just wanted to say this channel has become my favorite RUclips channel and I can't get enough of it. I've always loved guitar pedals even though I mostly play bass and synth. Some cheap pedals I have bought that I like are the Joyo JF-12 Voodoo Octava (it's green!!), Caline CP-26 reverb, Donner Ultimate Comp compressor & the Caline CP-18 Orange Burst overdrive. I was doing an experiment to see if I liked cheap pedals as much as the expensive stuff. I Liked them a lot. They are sturdy in metal enclosures and all sound good to me. My point is that for me price does not correlate to how much I like a pedal. Your video Made me happy because a person like you who is respected in the pedal world is kinda saying the same thing or at least that's my interpretation. When I first started playing acoustic gigs, I used the Edward the Comp pedal as a vocal comp with a Hi Z cable adapter. I used it subtly & once I dialed it in, it worked unbelievable well. It made my vocal notes sustain smoother and it helped even out the dynamics so I didn't have to move in & out as much. It actually sounded professional.
Btw, I think if more people tried a bit of comp on their live vocals, they'd love it & so would their audience. It's almost like adding a bit of Autotune but in a more natural way. (Kind of similar to how reverb smooths notes out & makes them sound more steady/ uniform).

I believe that was the most entertaining post I’ve seen in a while. As for pedals, I don’t use them in my rig, but I buy them for fun. A $200 pedal isn’t fun so great subject. And lastly, it’s not under $50, but at $65, the Artec parametric pedal is untouchable for using as a boast in front of the preamp. Why? Because it gets ant tone, but it’s quiet. Low noise levels are insane.

Dude, yes to Travis! I’m a hard rock guy, and this album is secretly one of my favorite records too. I consider it a comfort album when I need amazing warm tones, tasteful songwriting, and inspiration. Also, how about that bonus track?! Blue Flashing Lights tips.
Thanks for the amazing video, I might just go out and buy all of these pedals!

I've got the DOD 747 flanger and it's by far my favorite ever. Every other flanger I find always sounds like a modulated bitcrusher, with a really digital sounding sweep. The 747 can do that style of flange, but if you dial it right and go for a more subtle chorus-type sound, it has absolutely no digital "edges" to the sound, and it sounds like your signal is running through water. Smoothest thing I've ever heard!

Anyone who’s looking at the Dr.J Planes Walker Fuzz might be interested in this:
I got one and was a little underwhelmed when I had it first in the chain. You know: Fuzz first and all...
Then I went full-on rebel and moved the OD-3 in front of it and the world changed.
An Overdrive, even a boosting eq, in front of the Planes Walker really makes it come to life.
Goes to show to just try stuff.
Now to get the volume difference between Si and Ge modes sorted.
By the way, @Josh, you mentioned that you like the circuit in this. What makes you like this circuit in particular - or a circuit in general?

Thanks. I have a family to feed and i try to stick to limited budget options but only when they're actually worth it. It's amazing what you can get when you start researching used amps that fly under the radar, pedals or little known asian made guitars. But information is hard to come by your videos really helps.
In the past i splurged only to realise the best gear isn't always the most expensive at all. In fact my best guitars are a mexican strat and a 250€ Korean SG knockoff.

Imo the best cheap pedals come from Boss. The DS-1 and Electro Harmonix Small Cone are two of my favorite pedals ever. I know, they're above the $50 markup, but they're about the best bang for the buck you can get! For just over $150, you get a killer distortion that can do anything from metal to surf to grunge, and a really nice sounding reverb with awesome tone, both made of thick steel (boss pedals also have great paint that takes years to wear out) and with great switches, knobs, plugs etc. If you play rock, punk, or certain types of pop and metal, these two pedals are all you really need to get started and to get used to playing with pedals. 10/10, I couldn't imagine playing without them

Josh -- it is worth repeating, over, over, over, over and over again -- like a delay pedal infinite repeats -- you have THE BEST RUclips CHANNEL for guitar pedals. Other builders like Keeley, Wampler, Mike Matthews should follow suit. I have DR. J overdrive + boost pedal. Cannot believe how great it is for a low cost pedal. Great layout, intuitive controls, solid enclosure.

I tour with a Kemper these days but miss my old school pedal boards and the fun in switching pedals in and out. My SLEEPER / secret weapon pedal that I think is a screamin great deal on the used market, and which does a fabulous distortion both stacked and un-stacked is the MXR DISTORTION III. I have 4 or 5 of these and keep them on several of my pedal boards right next to other so called "boutique" pedals many times it's price. And they more than hold their own. Since I play country for a living, I love compressors, so will be checking this Marshall referenced above soon. GREAT episode as always.

I love the DOD Flanger. I almost forgot I used to own one. I had a Boss Flange too. I loved both of them. The Boss was more edgy and kind of in your face. It's a sweet flanger. But the DOD had it's own thing going. It could get pretty crazy, too. But the beautiful thing about it was the way you could dial in a lot of flange but it would still have a kind of softness to it that made it perfect for some situations that the Boss wasn't good for.
Great pedal! Glad to see it in the list.
