    The game is not pay to win, it's pay to have fun - most fun decks have lots of legendaries. My biggest gripe is that some decks cost way more than others - I can easily play pirate warrior as a f2p, but if I want to play reno mage, I need to mortgage my house and sell my left kidney.

      EXACTLY! I tried the past week to come back after 2.5 yrs gone and at that time I had 90% of the whole set.. I came back to having 50% and after $300plus spent and an hour plus of cracking stupid freaking packs which takes FOREVER just 61.9% of all cards. That would mean about 1k would equate to just 80%. That’s a crap ton and I’d very Very likely have just enough dust to create one legendary and maybe a few purples. The best of hearthstone has been long gone… died when the Creator left due to internal arguments like charges to people. It was the best game ever first 5 years

    Since last year I moved my hs play to wild, and started runeterra. In hs I have a great collection from playing since old gods, but I’m pretty sure I have more card completion in runeterra by now as f2p only. Magic was similar in cost for sure, but runeterra is a solid f2p option with fun mechanics. Glad you did a informative review on it recently :)

    The worst feeling is when you earn free packs by doing something that some person enthusiastically encourages you to do, like watching grandmasters for 2 or 4 hours, but you still only get 40 dust per pack...

  • @oneherdof
    @oneherdof 3 года назад +90

    The issue in hearthstone isnt really that it's pay to win, you can easily push high legend free to play just crafting the cheaper tier 1 or tier 2 decks. The issue is that you cant afford to play a variety of decks. Pay to have fun essentially.

    • @anklesthedragon
      @anklesthedragon 3 года назад +4

      that honestly depends on the format. It’s both P2W & P2HF, just depends on what you consider fun.
      You cannot make a tier 1 deck for cheap a lot of formats. There definitely are some, but not a ton. Blizzard did add a great option to get gold and packs for free just by playing with more quests and leveling, though. So it’s more possible to get better cards without actually paying.
      Back in the day, F2P literally could take hundreds to thousands of hours to create a tier 1 deck and run your way to legend. Nowadays, it’s much more doable in a reasonable amount of time which is really great on Blizzards end
      It also depends what you consider P2W. Like is it win enough to become legendary? Or win a fair amount of games? Or just win some games? Because if you want to become legendary and win like 60%+ games when you get to high ranking, you will likely need to pay or put in a ton of time grinding. But if that’s not something you care about, you can definitely get to a good rank and win often by not spending any money.
      You can easily make good climbing without paying especially with the questing and leveling systems they have nowadays. But if you’re trying to be seriously competitive, like amateur level or pro even if ur that good, then you likely need to pay UNLESS you’re willing to grind out gold.

      I have grinded since 2014 and have plenty of fun wild and classic decks, don't play standard though, I find it pretty boring. Lots of fun to be had on the cheap in this game. Coming from an MTG background where you have buy-ins similar to poker, just being able to do a couple of quests and get some cards is very endearing

However, I started to notice how difficult it was to have fun after playing for a year. So stopped. It was fun at the time. But it got increasingly frustrating because it was so expensive.

    I've played hearthstone for only a few months, spent no money, and have bought the entire tombs of terror and dalaran heist adventures and have never felt the need to spend money to stay competitive in standard. Hearthstone was too expensive for a long time, and that's why it feels like you need to spend money to have fun in wild, because the odds are you are missing most of the wild collection.

    Legends of Runeterra has an awesome model. I started playing a year and ago and I made some initial investments because I am not the best at grinding out decks. However, here I am a year later and I have been able to craft everything from the last 2 expansions and still have abundance of wild cards (correlates to golden cards in HS) and shards (correlates to dust). I currently a have a 100 % of the cards in 3 of the sets and the last set I own 73 % of the cards - which I easily could craft.

    I tried Hearthstone First during the Descent of Dragons expansion. Through the first few packs that I opened with coins I earned, I actually got a dragonqueen Alexstraza and Zephrys The great. So I just built an Highlander mage deck and had a lot of fun. Never spent a dime. But as soon as LOR came out, I shifted to LOR and until now, I am completely happy with my choice. Hearthstone is certainly PTW, I just got lucky in the beginning. LOR on the other hand is as free to play as it gets, without spending a dime, I completed almost 95% of the entire card pool within an year and never did I feel like I was grinding a lot. Even though since everyone has access to the top tier meta decks and climbing ranked can become tedious as you face the same deck back to back, You can't make me say Legends of Runeterra isn't the best digital CCG available right now. And with the latest introduction of the rougelike RPG lab: "The Saltwater Scourge ", there are a lot of ways to unwind your frustration of losing in the game. If you like card games a lot, I certainly recommend to give LOR a try. You will like it.

    I think the estimation about Standard is very optimistic. The 100 dust per pack rule only applies if you already have ALL cards from that expansion, since you need to be able to dust everything.
    What’s more likely for most people is about 50 dust per pack on average.
    And so even though I’ve already spent almost 200€ on the latest expansion, to craft the additional cards needed for some of the more expensive meta decks (with the 200€, I was only able to build shaman and face hunter decks - in part thanks to the free shaman deck that I got as a new player. AND I even had to dust some legendaries that I’d probably never use) - well, here’s a rough price list:
    Rush warrior: 200€
    Menagerie priest: 200€
    Secret/aggro paladin: 170€
    Some Warlock: 170€
    Lifesteal/Deathrattle DH: 100€
    Miracle Rogue: 100€
    1K gold is about 10€, so… yeah, have fun trying to win ~20K gold in arena…

    The fact that I hate the most about the monetization in Hearthstone is the difference in crafting cost beetween a Rare an Epic and a Legendary, like for 2 rares I have to spend 200 dust, then for 2 epics already 800, and for a Legendary 1600. To people complaining about Standard being P2W just learn dust conversion and be wise with your crafts, collect and over time make what you need. Play low cost decks to climb and build your collection over time. Save cards you feel will get nerfed so you get a full dust refund when you want to invest a craft. It sucks starting off but over time you'll be like us og players in wild.
    Hearthstone if anything has been somewhat more giving than they used to be when I started, at least in my opinion. Just hold your gold and spend it when a set hits. Stay away from packs you don't need and dust grind so you can craft what you need.

    Would love to win the bundle! Just started out playing at the game a month or two ago and I'm a bit tired of playing just one deck duo to the lack of resources. As you said in one of your earlier video's: the game is not pay to win, but pay to have fun.

    I was f2p for a year but when I decided to spend some money on bundles in one expansion it got me so much dust that was not even comparable to being f2p.

    Hey person, I came back to hearthstone like a month ago and since then I watch your every video. Suddenly, my collection of cards is not that big yet. The bundle would help me have more fun with the game. If u read it I wish u a nice day, even if I don't win :)

    I play Hearthstone :D
    As for the conversion -> You can go to the US battlenet and buy the bundles in $.
    I always do this when purchasing something (not that i often do that :) )

    Love your analysis on HS. Yes, HS is a very expensive game, especially for countries where currency is weak against the dollar. There are probably a handful of people playing this game from where I am from.

    Thanks for the giveaway and post a video just on Runeterra sometime. The decks aren't as varied as hearthstone or as degenerate as wild but you can still have interesting decks and complex champions (legendaries) to build your deck around.

    I don't understand why Blizzard doesn't release sales on older expansions (give some love to complete card collectors and wild players) or older portraits/card backs. They did this with Magni, Alleria and Medivh but it only lasted for a short while (it should have been quite profitable given it was the only sale from Hearthstone). Also, why isn't there a randomize portrait function for the game when they have randomized card backs?

  • @RealHalny
    @RealHalny 3 года назад

    i wish they would allow you to choose a legendary in reaward track rather than giving oy a random one. As a f2p player it feels terrilble when you get a legendary for a class that you dont play. I got a barrens legendary for rogue and i disenchanted it because i have no rogue cards

  • @pridas5202
    @pridas5202 3 года назад

    I recycled all my legendaries and epics just to craft a cool galakrond priest deck. I did that because the random generation allows me to play with cards I don’t have. Galakrond cycled out a week later.

    Arena has gotten so much worse in Hearthstone too... The draft in Runeterra will just give you another draft token if you do even reasonably well, but hearthstone arena doesn't even give you the equivalent of your gold in value until you're at like 8+ wins

    You can play for free and make an aggro deck for real cheap, but if you want to have fun or play any other type of deck it becomes really expensive really fast and most people don't just play a single deck over and over again it gets boring. Whizbang was good because it's really cheap and offers several decent decks, at least while it was in standard I doubt it's any good in wild.

      I have full collection on my fav factions and can basically craft every new badge of cards in the first two weeks, it really doesnt take much time to get a full collection in gwent, in Hs that is unthinkable

  • @UltimateMrTFan
    @UltimateMrTFan 3 года назад

    Pretty solid comparison. I think packs have gotten cheaper, but the game has gotten more expensive with two legendaries per class pretty set and another class added. Therefore, it's 20 class legendaries + neutral legendaries vs. 9 class legendaries + neutral legendaries.

    I've never gotten the ptw argument for the past two expansions. You could have easily gotten the entire darkmoon and forged in the barrens if you ground out the rewards track.

    When I started playing this game like 3 years ago I was f2p. All my decks were bargage, then I started buying the mega pack on Darkmoon (mainly because Nzoth was so cool) and now I have practically everything I want. It's preety much funnier, but also I have no money :D

    The lack of ability to buy the in game stuff you want with in game money is what kills it for me. Like, yeah, I wanna craft this legendary, but I don't want to essentially deconstruct one of my decks in order to make one card

    I think the pricing for hearthstone is stuck in 2014. Back then, cards technically had more value due to the smaller overall card list. Nowadays, with 3 expansions of 135-170 ish cards/year, the card value has gone down immensly, but the card packs has not gone down in value. I think the generalist Hearthstone packs for standard and wild should be a tad cheaper
