Yes, exactly! And even if you didn't make any money on it and it made you happy, that's something, but yes! While not all books are huge money makers, some of them are. And selling on Ebay is more profitable than, say, a yard sale. I put in some books in a yard sale of a friend for 25¢ each and they were in small boxes that held about 20-25 book per box and I had the boxes for $1 per box of 20-25. But in selling them on Ebay, I do well with them. So perhaps people who try to sell at yard sales don't understand that you can sell books well on Ebay.
Of course, some people are just idiots. LOL

The only reason people are negative on the idea is because they need to write it off so that they feel good about not considering it. They need to feel that there isn't any opportunity in it such that they feel comfortable "forgetting" about that particular idea. There are SO many ideas out there about "how to make money reselling" so it's no surprise that people desperately need a reason to THROW AWAY any ideas that they think aren't worth their time. They are frantically searching for something that might work for them and in that frantic search, they need to discard ideas ASAP. On the other side of things, your videos are there as a beacon of hope for people who actually want to sell books. Personally, I think it's wonderful. Books are magical items that are often underappreciated. I absolutely love that you have a passion for this and share it with others. I recently subscribed and looked forwarding to your content.

Last week I was told at an estate sale where huge boxes of books were there for $20 by another seller as he scanned each book ‘ here take the books they’re not worth anything- as I loaded them into my boxes- a few fantastic/sci-fi books that sell really well in groups!’

      @pnw-coast Месяц назад +1

That's because you're in the US. Having to compete with sellers like thriftbooks and even goodwillbooks makes it really hard for individual sellers to compete at a level that would sustain a full-time income. Books and other media can be great as a part-time or hobby income though, but you just have to wait for those infrequent high value sales.

You are doing a great job , and more importantly, you're doing what you want to do and do it for you and your family. I have been doing eBay reselling for 18 years and let me tell you, people never want to understand, they just want to give their opinion without caring to see the work we put in behind the scenes. I stopped justifying what i do a long time ago. I make more money in a week than a lot of people (that tell me get a real job) do in a month for half the hours worked, but that's for me to know and them to overthink about and try to pull me down. I love what I do, and I can see you do also. I support, cheer on and am genuinely happy for anyone that pushes hard and has a supportive growth mindset. I am in Techs group and watch your zoom calls (not live yet) but I love hearing from people with the same mindset and desire to push hard doing what we love! Lets Go!!! Sam :)

Until you know the postage, weight, size limitations, ebay 15% fees - you can't work out the profit of a combination of book titles. We're lucky in Australia knowing all the satchel/padded mailer/box combinations have 5kg max weight allowance. So a set of scales and the packaging to see what fits before listing something is handy.

It follows the very effective marketing of the major online bookstores in moving to digital. In fact you could argue all the online resellers/streaming services do it. Steam gaming sells you a digital version of a game. You can’t transfer ownership, once you’re dead those game licenses die with you. With media you guys sell, your encouraging people back to tangible ownership. There’s something really wonderful in opening a favourite book, sliding a CD into a player and listening to music and so on.

I totally understand the questions around it being worth it to have the warehouse for a business like that. In the US, I'm finding it very hard to make money with books. But that's on me and not knowing what sells for the most I think. I've probably got a lot of "low-end" books so it feels like even when I make a sale, it's nothing once shipping and fees are accounted for. But your channel has been an inspiration for me to learn more about what sells for more money in my area and also implementing bundling for some of those lower end things. Mel, first time commenter but long time watcher here! I am in Texas and I have noticed that books sell for quite a lot less in the US than in Australia. I Iooked up the Audels books wihile you were talking and they are selling from $25-35 here with one sold comp for $34. Everytime I comp a book thinking it will be a winner, nope. Very rarely able to find books that will bring in what you are able to sell them for. I imagine it would be very difficult in the US to have a book seller niche but I imagine it can be the reverse for other niches. I would love to sell more books. They just don't bring in the profit here.

I'm in TX too, and came to say something similar. Most books I comp are selling in the US for $2-10 by mega sellers. Also, I've looked at warehouse space in my area, and it's around $2k/mo. So I think people are just using the numbers they see in their area and it doesn't add up to what Mel is doing. I think it's awesome that it works for her. Also: I have almost every single Betty Neels book. 😁

I'm not going to pile on. Some people ask what seem like stupid questions to learn things. I would be a hypocrite if I critiqued someone asking a stupid question in comments because I'm sure I've probably asked plenty of stupid questions on various things I know nothing about. Its not worth getting worked up about.

You are always very clear about your finances; apparently those people can't do math...LOL! :) Nor do they understand retail sales. Should grocery stores stop selling cheap candy bars or offering loss leaders? A broad range of prices is actually a good thing to develop a broad customer base, and return customers. Don't worry about negative comments from people who have no clue. :)

No, I don’t have any problems. The padded mailers are water resistant, thick and high quality. They’re purchased from Australia Post so also endorsed by them. I don’t buy the cheap mailers from china. I’ve sent over 20k books like this.

Italian Limoncello Book: Limoncello is an Italian drink served either before (apéritif) or after (digestif) dinner to "whet" the appetite or help you digest your meal. When I lived in Naples, my neighbors pronounced it: Lemon Chello, with an h, like you were saying the musical instrument Chello (cello), even though neither word is spelled with an H . We drank a lot of it, while there.

@@thestorymerchant28 Correct. Whet (like a Whet stone) is a better choice then Wet for an appetite, but Wet is better for a drink, such as: Wet your whistle! So if you are using a liquid drink (Limoncello) to stimulate an appetite, are you wet whetting?😉

Love watching all your videos including those that show the low-end books you sell. Please don't give a second thought to the negative comments they are not worth worrying about and certainly do not represent the view of all your viewers - if any other than themselves!

I dont think there is any issue with books - I think the "idea" from the no idea folk is reselling is not possible full time. The other thing people forget is anyone that is doing this fulltime with any PLANS to grow and build a long term business, there will be some heavy overheads and costs when getting the foundations in play (storage, rent, staff, materials, systems, processes, tools, and everything else). Overtime these should all pay dividends. Stuff the assumers Mel. I had a good rant about all of this the other week. The other thing to remember when people say "it isn't worth it for them" then thats a THEM issue. Youve got this and keep on keeping on. Keep kicking butt Mel.

I would like to say that I think you are inspiring, you obviously work so hard and really should not have to justify yourself!
I live in the UK and have just started watching you, after my husband, who is an EBay reseller was watching one of your episodes, I enjoyed watching you so much that I subscribed.
As someone who is trying to find the niche I want to resell in I can honestly say I think it will be books! I am going to continue to watch you and take all the advice you give on your channel!
Thank you Mel and great job 😁

You tell ‘em, Mel! I’ve routinely sold books online in the US with staggering profit margins. I think people believe no one reads real books anymore, mixed in with a bit of resentment that they’re not living the life they want to live, as you are. Who knows. Delete the negative Nellies and move past them! Woman owned, woman operated and some people just are haters. So, oh well!
Love what you’re doing and damn, that profit for a WEEK! Gives me hope and even more enthusiasm for what I’m doing here in the US! Keep going strong! 💪🏼
