    Don’t worry he already said he is releasing that stuff later, it just wasn’t what minus was for him anymore. This is based off his loss the pain of that loss and he’s already said eyes closed is the most pop like song on the album in an interview with rolling stone. His mindset changed, recently one of his best mates, Jamal Edwards, died and his wife developed a tumor and he thought he was going to lose her. The way processes emotions like grief is by writing songs and these are the ones he wrote during this period.

    Hey man just wanted to say something ,I am biased towards ed coz he's the bloke who inspired me to start writing songs and playing the guitar a bit more seriously. Also i too like ed had a stutter while i was growing up and my sister was kind enough to buy me his 1st album : + and i resonated with a tune called" you need me, i don't need you ", i learned that tune from back to front and it weirdly enough helped me get rid of my stutter. I am also not the best looking guy on this planet and listening to ed's interviews about maintaining a work ethic and practicing every single day really inspired me and i began channeling my deepest thoughts into lyrics which i eventually made into songs . I know the bloke gets alot of flack for changing his sound but i really love it how he loves exploring every single genre. From soulful ballads like : Perfect ,Thinking out loud , Tenerife Sea to Rap tunes like : Take me Back to London, You need me, Take it back, 2step to pop smashes like bad habits, shivers .. the guy is everything i want to be. Plus he is extremely kind, donates to charities, visits hospitals and never lets the hate get to him. Regardless i love the guy for who he is, in my book he will always be a legend and an inspiration and the funny thing is ed still ends all of his shows with "you need me ". Also i know what ed went through in 2022 , his closest friend Jamal Edwards passed away and that must have shook him because he released a tune called F64 as an ode to jamal and its fucking incredible( check it out on sbtv) also the fact that that many of the tunes in subtract cover insecurities , grief and the main theme on "-" is how to live life without things ( a.k.a Subtract things from life), i am not only hopeful but i am sure this will be his best body of work. Thanks for reading. Lots of love xx

      Hey man, idk if you listened, but there is some videos of an ed's gig playing the new songs with a band. Eyes closed really is the most "popable" song (there's spark and curtains that give some pop feelings, but they're good, i really like curtains), the majority are more like some deep feeling songs, even the other kinda single songs are good, like boat, salt water and end of youth (my favorite), are good in my opinion. I love his old stuff but his new pop stuff is still brilliant. Not to mention his acoustic live performances of these new songs are just as great as his older stuff. I’m not sure why or how his new stuff is considered bad just because it’s pop. Hell… Ed’s been pop since the beginning. The A team, his biggest hit from the start is pop. It was just more acoustic. But you can still compare a lot of his old songs to his newest pop stuff like bad habits and shivers.

    • @sergescardigno
      @sergescardigno  Год назад +3

      well I think it's all always been pop, I don't think anyone's discounting the new stuff because it's pop. it's just more commercial. i would say the older stuff holds up better just in what motivated the songs. seems like the newer stuff is kinda to flex songwriting muscles and see how high the streams can soar.

    • @alfredkc
      @alfredkc Год назад +1

      I agree that there’s nothing wrong with pop, but in his slightly older stuff, he was more indie-ish hip-hop (e.g. No.5 Collaborations Project).

    • @HenrysGuitarLog
      @HenrysGuitarLog Год назад +2

      @@alfredkc From how I interpret it, Ed kinda differentiates his "main" album and his collab album. His main albums (Plus, Multiply, Divide, Equals, and now Subtract) have always been more mainstream and pop-ish, although the later these albums are, the more electronic the sound has become.
      The example you mentioned (No. 5 Collaborations Project) belongs to the latter kind. So, I won't say it's a good example of older Ed stuff.
      I believe you are also aware of the sequel to this one, the No. 6 Collaborations Project. Funnily, I know some people who hate that album because they think this doesn't sound like Ed's music. That kinda shows that we really just can't please everyone. Made something pop-ish, and people want something more indie-ish. Made something more experimental, and others want something more pop-ish 😅

    I always hate being "that person", but I used to feel like this when artists I fell in love with changed their sound. Even within the last few years, when one of my favorite bands (PVRIS) released an album with a more pop & experimental sound, I felt a bit deflated in my excitement.
    But I think it's important to remember that these artists are *artists*. They aren't a specific genre, they aren't a specific instrument, they aren't the image of them we've created in our heads. They love music in all of the forms it takes, and they should always be allowed to experiment, change, and grow. Ed grew up listening to everything from heavy metal, post-hardcore, indie, pop, r&b, and rap. He was never going to fit a rigid, acoustic indie singer-songwriter box. His love of music is too vast for that. Who else could captivate an audience with just a mic and acoustic guitar, impress the rap community with skillful bars, AND take not just Ollie Sykes, but the entire band of Bring Me the Horizon to perform at the Brit Awards, screams and growls and all? Ed Sheeran is a rare gem of an artist, and the number of people who call him a sellout for making music HE enjoys is unfair. The only fair argument is that he began to lose himself in his desire to people-please, but that isn't selling out. Whether it's pop or indie or rap or metal, it's his art, and it's meant to fulfill him, not anyone else.

    • @henrywayne5724
      @henrywayne5724 Год назад

      I completely agree with this take. I also agree it's completely fair for some of his listeners to dislike his new direction as an artist. Ed has never minded critics or audiences. He just makes music he wants to make and sells it to millions who want to listen, whether he loses/gains more along the way. It's quite interesting to me that with Ed, the argument is always he went too mainstream(from OG fans) or he hasn't evolved much(from professional critics), and I wonder at how both of these could be true? Ed can't be inboxed as an artist, and he gets all sorts of wacky ideas that he goes all in, to varying results, whether it's Afro Beats, UK drill, Hip-hop and most recently Regetone. It's really weird to me that folks say he isn't talented or he's too bland when you look at how much he's accomplished despite starting as a nobody in the industry. Subtract, while a return to his singer songwriter roots, is also charting new territory for him, with fresh instrumentals, orchestras and an entire visual album! I will support him in whatever whacky things he decides to do next for his career, just because his lyrics took a natural dip with his genre switching doesn't mean he lacks any artistic merit.
