The way the ideal 'Imperial Guardsman' game would work is exactly like the opening of Battlefield 1. Specifically the scene where you are a lone soldier that inevitably dies, the camera pans out, and is IMMEDIATELY shoved into the POV of yet another soldier.
that sounds kinda similar to the only real 2 changes I'd make to idea 1 suggested in the video. 1: 9 AI squadmates per guardsman player (make it a minimum sized squad) 2: when a player dies instead of taking 20 seconds to respawn they instantly take the place of the AI squad member with the highest HP, all AI squad members respawn when you reach a checkpoint. if you die with no AI guardsmen remaining you have to wait the full 60 seconds before coming back with a new squad of 9 AI teammates.
@@camerapasteurize7215 ah... admittedly I haven't played Battlefield, I only knew about that section from the comment I replied to, and the only part of that that the comment really got across was the "you are expendable" bit. also, to be fair, in 40K the "yet unique" bit probably wouldn't carry across anyway. if 40K tried that idea the quote would probably end up being "you are expendable precisely because of how replaceable you are, there are trillions of other soldiers exactly like you waiting to take your place"
The best way I've seen to replicate the vulnerability and expendability of a guardsman was seen in the intro(?) to battlefield 1. You were a rando and you were expected to die and once your time came you were very quickly replaced by another rando, and another. Respawn was near instant to reflect the huge number of bodies with guns on the field. You never really "die", you aren't "a" guardsman, you are the guard itself as a faction.
Hear me out.. the guardsmen get an arty call-in. You ping a spot and like 3 earthshaker shells come down. I kinda just really want to see call-ins added but guard would be the one to do it on.

Most guardsmen get paid pretty well generally and get well dieted food, especially compared to their less specialized and lower skilled counterparts the PDF troopers. Hell you'll likely get to be apart of your very own inner regimental gang. The Imperium, considering it's size and logistical challenges, does a pretty great job most of the time keeping their guard regiments in good order. Most guard regs don't even see the apocalyptic full scale war that's often depicted in mainline 40k lore, the reason being is because there are no space marines in those easier campaigns. Either a star wars battlefront-esque guard PVP mode, or an Enlisted-style "you are the squad, you can change between which squad member you control and can equip them all individually, etc." for the base game would work wonderfully.
I would love to assist my buddies as a little guardsmen when their lobbies are full. Just being able to play with them would be awesome (since for some reason PvP parties are still capped at 3 for some reason).
I'd like one where you play a commisar where it's more of an inbetween. Duelling and parrying small enemies and you can kill guardsman if they try to run away due to low morale...or you have to execute the ones expossed to chaos.
I agree that Darktide was not the guardsman game I wanted, but a big part of that is that they made a online only coop game instead of a single player offline campaign.
The first proposal is the best one... playing the operations as guards and you could make it as you can only respawn in some parts of the missions, so that you have reenforciments and stuff. But the best part is that it needs to be balance the way the game is right now, it needs to be brutal.
If you could play as a guardsmen you should be able to pick up a full on bolt gun off the ground to get one shot off and instantly die because it blew your arm and half your torso off with it from the recoil, but you got that one shot off!
Proposal 2 would be the best option in my opinion seeing as it wouldn't make a lot of sense having a single guardsman on his own with 3 space marines. Personally I like the way it is, maybe another space marine would make it better, but so far I think 3 is working great. But I definitely argee that playing as a guardsman would be a lot of fun. My favourite part of the game is battling alongside guardsmen.
Preach, brother preach. For ten thousand years we have hold the line to have no game for us, to only be subjugated to only being a background set piece for our lords.
My ultimate dream right now is for Saber/Focus to give the Space Marine II engine and assets to their other smaller dev teams, and each team makes a full spinoff game about different Imperial factions, complete with full Campaign and Co-operations: a Grey Knights game, a Sisters of Battle game, a Militarum game. ALL the fundamental foundation is set, they just have to get it made!
idea 1 is probably my favorite but I'd make 2 changes to it. 1: would be to the number of guardsmen. 5 isn't a proper squad when it comes to guardsmen. over time across many editions of 40K guardsmen have rather consistently had 10 as their minimum squad size. maximum squad size has varied a lot over the years, back when I started playing it was supposedly 50 (I admittedly didn't collect Imperial Guard at the time so I don't have the relevant codex to check the rules), for a while it was 30, and checking current rules it's now 20. let's bring 9 bots per guardsman player instead, that way 1 guardsman player ends up with a minimum sized squad of guardsmen, meanwhile 3 guardsman players would end up with 30. 2: respawn mechanics. instead of having AI guardsmen respawn on a 20 second timer they instead usually only respawn at checkpoints (the same checkpoints that let Space Marines instantly come back), at which point your squad is replenished to maximum and all the AI squad members are fully healed (Space Marine bots already fully restore health at checkpoints so I don't see any balance issues here). when a player dies they instantly respawn taking the place of the AI squad member with the highest health remaining. if your team completely runs out of AI guardsmen it's the regular 60 second timer for respawn at which point you'll come back with 9 AI squad members (if a 2nd player dies during those 60 seconds they'll come back at the same time as the first player, taking the place of one of those AI squad members)
GW could easily make a game where you're a guardsmen against the odds. I forgot if it was in dawn of war or a book but I remember reading about 2 guardsmen holding a position for 2 weeks against the forces of chaos with one of them killing a ridiculous amount of chaos space marines unarmed
Helldivers still need to add the SEAF grunt squads that got leaked months ago. It'd be peak gameplay to fight and die alongside a bunch of grunts Halo style.
i've had the thought of a type of operations mission where as a team you hold out as guardsmen for as long as you can, and when you all die then that's when the drop pods come in and you switch to a space marine, the mission then switches to attack and push with bonuses depending on how well you defended
ngl i would LOVE to be a Guardsman in this game, and pls let it play like WWZ just hordes and hordes of enemies vs us the Guard with our little Lasguns, and let us be like very easy to kill and if we die the pov just transfers into another Guardsman like that scene in Battlefield 1 intro mission or in Enlisted 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I understand completely that Space Marine 2 is about Space Marines in general (and, Ultramarines specifically), but I told my son the other day that I hope they might add a DLC down the road (or, an expansion at a later date) that would focus on a Guardsman's experience allowing people to play as Guardsmen.
Also a cool idea I think is with the option where there are 4 bot guardsmen with you if you yourself die you can take control of a bot guardsmen in your squad
I’ve always wanted a FPS game surrounding a lone guardsman after an astounding defeat at the hands of the Orks. You have one mission. GET OUT! Have it play like the Farcry 5 DLC “Hours of Darkness” so if you make ANY noise. You alert DA BOYZ! You could get weapon drops off of your dead friends and I was thinking since in lore a Las cartridge can be recharged in the sun, have a day night cycle where your ammo SLOWLY regenerates during the day but not at night.
Maybe a pvp mode of 14 v 6 veteran guardsmen vs space marines, it could be called 'hunt' or something and the guardsmen would have to rely on swarming individual astartes, maybe bringing one down with a well placed melta shot or an unexpected 3-man bayonet charge from behind
The Guardsmens signature ability should be something like calling in artillery fire or air support. They should also be targeted less when space marines are present, as the marines are a greater threat to the enemy, similar to how we play ignoring chaff enemies to go after the majoris or extremis threats. I still want a battlefield game but with guardsmen.
These are perfect ideas. Why not submit this to the developers for future dlc content because i would totally pay for dlc to be a guardsman maybe with minimal customization
Squad of guardsmen, player & AI characters, would work perfectly. One of the guardsmen could have vox caster (the radio thingy) - and the squad could 'activate' regimental orders they would receive such as rapid fire buff, take cover (temporary armor against incoming fire), or to gain bonus to melee fighting. Fix bayonets!!
Imagine a Imperial Guardsman game with the mechanics from Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. Where you have your own team of people all with different loadouts and you can freely switch between each soldier on your team or when they die. Would be so great....
A guardsman class where you are the sargant/commisar and you have a group of 4 other AI Guardsman, when you target a specific enemy, it focus fires on that enemy and all AI in your squad shoot to bring it down would be awesome. having a special where you summon even more guardsman for 30 seconds with a heavy weapons crew that lay down heavy bolter fire in a general area would be awesome to clear hordes. Make it a supplimental class to the space marine group so you got 3 marines and 2 guardsman sargants would be awesome. Maybe even multiple guardsman classes... 1. commisar-buffs guards and marines 2. commando- does more damage and can "plant" a melta bomb by going invisible just like sniper, doesn't decloak while planting, only when attacking 3. heavy specialist- can summon a group of heavy bolter gunners to mow down hordes 4. Logistics specialist- can summon an ammo crate and medicae that heals both marines and guardsman over time
Do you want Saber to do this officially, or a modder making it? Super cool idea regardless. My friends and I had a similar idea back in the day when Halo CE came out. There's something so capturing about being a weak marine and watching a superhuman warrior effortlessly destroy enemies that you were just struggling to overcome.
If I were to play as the Imperial Guard, there should be a separate mode from the story as a special mode that is something like having the character survive as long as possible to accumulate stats, or a mode of normal human vs Xenos & Heretic. It would be fun to experience the atmosphere of being a normal human fighting against dangerous and strong creatures
My idea for a Guardsmen Class would be. All the basics are here. 1 wound 1 armor Can dodge but can't parry. Veteran: the basic Guardsmen, can switch out lasgun for Plasma Gun, Melta Gun, Flamer & Boltgun. Commissar: Have buffing aura similar to Bulwark. Boosting Damage and Armor Recharge. Akimbo Pistol & Melee and is the only Guardsmen that can Parry and Gunstrike but they don't instant kill just Stun. But not agianst large enemies and bosses only gaunts, tzangors and warriors at most but not Rubrics or Terminators.
Honestly, the best Guardsmen sim I can think of is classic XCOM modded into 40k. It has the hate for the Xenos, the ridiculous casualty rate, the "rocket tag" style gameplay (especially early on).
I would love to play as a Guardsman! Imagine you are a lot weaker than a Space marine player but you can have like 20 Guardsman players tackling these levels instead of three Space Marines. Would be pretty awesome.
What I would propose for an idea like this, is that after your first 3 slots are filled, any friends who join your game from that point on are each individual guardsmen. This would be both balanced and streamer friendly. if you had a stream of 100s of people wanting to join in you absolutely could have a private army of guardsmen backing you up. just increase the respawn timer incrementally with each additional joining player.
A co-op game where you play an Operations style mission as like 30 guardsmen would be so fun. Unlimited respawns but you're timed and if you dont finish the mission by the end of the timer a hive tyrant drops or something and you're just screwed lol, the different difficulties would be different timers. Bonus feature could be that two people could pick to be Veteran Sergeants and they would basically be slightly buffed guardsmen on a longer respawn timer but they would have the ability "bayonet charge" where they can force the entire squad to fix bayonets and charge the enemy, where the player playing a normal guardsman would only be able to steer the charge and the charge would do bonus melee damage :^)
And/or: we should be able to play as a commissar with some guardsmen bots on our side. We would be stronger than a guardsman but less then a space marine. The ability should be a command we give to the bots to control them, have friendly fire on them and if we kill one the other guardsmen get a buff.
Dude the lasgun would be better the most space marine equipment, the cultist lasgun shots eat that ass from across the map and drop you 1 point of armor every shot...
My idea would be that you spawn in with 10 guardsmen and they ARE your health pool, You control the leader of the squad and chose the loadout specifically for the leader that you are controlling, all guardsmen block, shoot and move as you do. In terms of the parry system, have perfect parry as the bayonet charge that is longer and works only on minoris, larger foes cannot be parried but can be blocked with stagger. Special ability calls in artillery that is laser guided.
Had a dude debate me why this is a bad idea, comparing it to a bicycle in a car game. I need to connect with the guardsmen to understand the space marine.
A concept I would love to implement the role of the guardsman is adding a forth player in a march, acting as a "support commander" thus commander could act as the person who send the other space marines supplies, guardsman reinforcement, air support and all the Astra military support at the moment. Of course the mechanics of this support commander could be focused in either cool down abilities or some special tokens to use his abilities. Or even a mix of both. If you get tired of acting as a commander you could take control of a guardsman in the game (you could probably die in the next two minutes, but at least you can just take control of other guardsman and rest a little bit of the commander paperwork)
So hear me out. As the guardsmen class you only get one life. And since yall want to be guardsmen and know how weak they are, if you get hit once you die. After that you can never use the class again.
The way I see the Guardsmen gameplay is that you have similar mechanics to Enlisted. So basically - a lot bunch of Infantry Guardsmen bots running around, BUT you can switch between them, and you autoswitch to the nearest one if your playable dies. That way, you can even customise your own squad, and maintaining the "special" guardsmen like the one with Vox Caster, or Special Weapons Commander survival, by quickswapping and taking the hits for them as Regular guardsmen. And of course, upgrades can vary from increasing your squad size to employing Guardsmen with different weapons into it, to promoting your squad into Stormtroopers, increasing their durabily drastically. Lastly, if you encounter Medicae stimms, it not only heals your Current guardsman upon usage, but additionally reinforces your squad with like 2-3 additional soldiers. Battlefield 1 Intro schematic of quickswitch die will go so hard with it.
I think that idea is super strong and I only didn't really talk about it because it would require new systems. I aimed at what was already present in game now.
Would honestly rather see a large scale warfront game specifically about guard, rather than trying to adapt this game's mechanics to playing a guardsman. Play it exactly like Battlefield 1. For PvE mode, its you and 50 other players trying to gain and hold ground in the trenches of somewhere like Vraks. Play as different regiments on different maps, but everyone plays the same regiment (Krieg were of course there, but I know Cadia sent some troops, among many many others). Reward team play by giving buffs to accuracy and damage output the closer you are to groups of other players. For PvP you do exactly the same, but the other team plays the heretics. No Space Marines involved at all, or demons or any other crazy stuff. Just Guardsmen with their lasguns and bayonets shooting, clubbing and mortaring the shit out of each other
Imagine a game mode with them. They are not as beefy as the marines but can be a quick time to kill. Chaos guardsmen and regular guardsmen. Would be a fun mode to play ❤❤🔥🤘
also a game mode where everyone is a guardsmen in (PvP) and you capture points to get a space marine or 3 squad of space marines temporarily type thing
You could laso have that you can give your guardsmen orders or make lines. Such as create a shooting rank which can either stand shoot or crouch shoot which could double the firerate as a bonus. Or an ability to say "Fix bayonets" which gives them more damage in close quarters.
All of that is super cool but would likely require entirely new systems to be designed. Which would significantly increase the development cost and time. I aimed at ideas that would leverage existing systems.
Would bayonet charge the enemy wave to certain death. 10/10

let's bring 9 bots per guardsman player instead, that way 1 guardsman player ends up with a minimum sized squad of guardsmen, meanwhile 3 guardsman players would end up with 30.
The 40k mod for Arma 3 is pretty good. Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines are pretty terrifying to fight as just guard in the mod.
GW could easily make a game where you're a guardsmen against the odds. I forgot if it was in dawn of war or a book but I remember reading about 2 guardsmen holding a position for 2 weeks against the forces of chaos with one of them killing a ridiculous amount of chaos space marines unarmed
Man! Imagine Hell Let Lose but 40k styling, would be so good
Helldivers with extra steps lol
wh40k is a 40 year old franchise brah
@@Alolan.Vulpix.Getting.Railed it would basically be the same gameplay
Helldivers still need to add the SEAF grunt squads that got leaked months ago. It'd be peak gameplay to fight and die alongside a bunch of grunts Halo style.
Not really
Not even close... you dont know how is to be a guardsman
i've had the thought of a type of operations mission where as a team you hold out as guardsmen for as long as you can, and when you all die then that's when the drop pods come in and you switch to a space marine, the mission then switches to attack and push with bonuses depending on how well you defended
ngl i would LOVE to be a Guardsman in this game, and pls let it play like WWZ just hordes and hordes of enemies vs us the Guard with our little Lasguns, and let us be like very easy to kill and if we die the pov just transfers into another Guardsman like that scene in Battlefield 1 intro mission or in Enlisted 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I understand completely that Space Marine 2 is about Space Marines in general (and, Ultramarines specifically), but I told my son the other day that I hope they might add a DLC down the road (or, an expansion at a later date) that would focus on a Guardsman's experience allowing people to play as Guardsmen.
Star ship trooper extermination is the closest thing your gonna get rn lol
Certainly something I'd be interested in...a DLC maybe?
Bonus points if guardsmen can find space marine weapons and turn them into mounted weapons 👍
I sugggest the player be a Sargeant or Comissar with a squad of guardsmen.
Yes it sounds like fun!
Also a cool idea I think is with the option where there are 4 bot guardsmen with you if you yourself die you can take control of a bot guardsmen in your squad
Who will rise up? Who will claim the coveted “Wanna be like Sly Marbo?!?!?!” trophy
This would actually be really sick
I think a guardsmen should be able to parry and execute a minoris, but not a majoris.
Everybody loves the underdog.
I know this won't happen but for modders nothing is impossible
I love fighting eldritch horrors with a flashlight
Its hard to see them otherwise
@@Reginald-sc9tk The mighty highlighters of the imperium!
I like the idea playing as guardsmen in Space Marine 2 and not just in darktide.
These are perfect ideas. Why not submit this to the developers for future dlc content because i would totally pay for dlc to be a guardsman maybe with minimal customization
How would I do that?
@@Reginald-sc9tk not sure my guess is they have some kinda submission page for reports or ideas but not sure where to find it
On the forums bro @@Reginald-sc9tk
Squad of guardsmen, player & AI characters, would work perfectly. One of the guardsmen could have vox caster (the radio thingy) - and the squad could 'activate' regimental orders they would receive such as rapid fire buff, take cover (temporary armor against incoming fire), or to gain bonus to melee fighting. Fix bayonets!!
This would work so well as a squad of Guardsmen in horde mode……this needs to happen!
Imagine a Imperial Guardsman game with the mechanics from Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. Where you have your own team of people all with different loadouts and you can freely switch between each soldier on your team or when they die. Would be so great....
Shame no game really capitalised on the idea properly after that. Only FPS I can say someone should really try on console for the mechanics.
1. commisar-buffs guards and marines
2. commando- does more damage and can "plant" a melta bomb by going invisible just like sniper, doesn't decloak while planting, only when attacking
3. heavy specialist- can summon a group of heavy bolter gunners to mow down hordes
4. Logistics specialist- can summon an ammo crate and medicae that heals both marines and guardsman over time
Thats thinking
Do you want Saber to do this officially, or a modder making it?
Super cool idea regardless. My friends and I had a similar idea back in the day when Halo CE came out. There's something so capturing about being a weak marine and watching a superhuman warrior effortlessly destroy enemies that you were just struggling to overcome.
Either is fine. Id take the option as a W and run
I still remember playing the PVE mode in the 1st space marine game and having a guardsman with a melta sneak up on me and vaporizing me
Peak gameplay
My idea for a Guardsmen Class would be.
All the basics are here.
1 wound
1 armor
Can dodge but can't parry.
Hell ye
Being a guardsmen would be kinda like playing a hell diver I would imagine
It would be harder...
If Guardsmen you get killed by Astartes walking into you
For the emperor the cadians will stand !
Being a guardsman should have finding cover system to have at least some chances
Right?
The new starship troopers is gonna fill this niche
If I can play as a guardsman in Space Marine 2, I will buy it.
You haven't bought it already?!
Then you'll probably never buy it
What I would propose for an idea like this, is that after your first 3 slots are filled, any friends who join your game from that point on are each individual guardsmen. This would be both balanced and streamer friendly. if you had a stream of 100s of people wanting to join in you absolutely could have a private army of guardsmen backing you up. just increase the respawn timer incrementally with each additional joining player.
That would be fun, I wonder if the servers or peer to peer netcode could handle it.
Hell yea
Honestly, I’m amazed no one has modded Helldivers 2 with 40k weapon/armor skins
I think someone has.
Too true
So basically an iron man mode in this game lmfao
Yes.
Honestly, this sounds really fun. I liked the 1st option best.
Thats actually is absolutely an idea I had and I only discarded it because it sounded high effort to implement
Oh they should do it like enlisted where you lead a squad around and instantly turn into one of your comrades when the one you are controlling dies.
Thats the ideal implementation but would require new systems
Had a dude debate me why this is a bad idea, comparing it to a bicycle in a car game.
I need to connect with the guardsmen to understand the space marine.
That last sentence is exactly the point.
Reminds me a bit of Natural Selection 2
@@Reginald-sc9tk or even like Dawn of war 2 mechanics, but with the possibility of taking comannd of the troops like a call to arms video-game
In this game even the Space Marines get hit once and die
@sabergames can your youtube guy get this idea to a dev please
immediately upon getting space marine 2 I had these exact cravings. lol.
I knew I wasn't alone
So hear me out. As the guardsmen class you only get one life. And since yall want to be guardsmen and know how weak they are, if you get hit once you die. After that you can never use the class again.
Imagine PVP guardsmen vs chaos renegades, 64 players, that would be sick af
Just Guardsmen with their lasguns and bayonets shooting, clubbing and mortaring the shit out of each other
so basically helldivers 2 in space marines 2
Sure
If each hell diver had 5 other marines.
I could see proposal 2 being practical.
Solid video, as always.
Appreciate it
Imagine a game mode with them. They are not as beefy as the marines but can be a quick time to kill. Chaos guardsmen and regular guardsmen. Would be a fun mode to play ❤❤🔥🤘
I want to be able to play as a Tyranid, especially a Lictor ! Just imagine the kind of versus pvp we could have with with Tyranids added as playable.
Hell yea
someone get this to henry cavil
also a game mode where everyone is a guardsmen in (PvP) and you capture points to get a space marine or 3 squad of space marines temporarily type thing
