(Leinster supporter) - Very emotional day for me. I used to be on "Hill 16" as part of Heffo's army. Great athmosphere in the northside of Dublin before the game. Incredible scenes inside Croke Park before, during and after game. As for the game itself; great 1st half for Leinster and great 2nd half for Northampton. Not surprised at Northampton's efforts in the last 10 mins but surprised at Leinster not playing the 80 mins. Lucky escape but good teams know how to win.
David, thanks for the note. I am sure that it was absolutely epic being there and as a true rugby fan I am jealous of this one. The game didn't disappoint from a purest perspective and now we have the final most people want to see. Enjoy.
I watched this in my village local with the aul lad and man was the last 10 minutes quiet in there! Most enjoyable game of rugby in a good while. Mad respect to the saints - despite leinster dominating the first hour, they grew into it and really made it a contest.
Gibson park...just wow.
It must have been a great atmosphere for sure. Home in the end.
What a game. Thought we were going to run away with it after 20 mins.. fair play to the Saints, they really stood up. In the end, it could have gone either way. A game fit for a final. Well done everyone not only did we win, but rugby did as well.
This game demonstrated that when a team is in full control for 3/4 of the game that you cannot take your foot off the pedal for a second.
If Leinster let that slip that would have been disastrous for their moral considering the hype surround the team right now.
But they won and that's all that mattered but that point will be hammered home to the players in the coming days I'm sure.
Two kiwis were the best players on the park today. I'm sure you were very happy to see that!!
I was on the edge of my seat with 10 to go. With 3 mins to go I was no longer on my seat and pacing around the living room.
Ha ha , great one. Thanks for the comment. Got there in the end.
I walked away when the last rook nearly turned over to Northampton in the 80 min
JGP👏👏👏another man of match preformance..ross byrne has got to nail that penalty in front of goal in 2nd half ...Northampton alot of knock ons in first half ...van de flier knock on in good attacking position just b4 half time was poor ..need to be more clinical...it would have made for a easier 2nd half..
JGP positioning was top class ,he saved them
What a day....I.should have brought a defibrillator with me.. Ye Gods that last 5 minutes was heartstopping. A match full of mistakes on both sides and nervy. Leinster dominated the first half but the Saints always play with attack and intent right up to the 80 min mark...which is what I love about them....and nearly snatched it. As a Leinster fan relieved and as I have a ticket for Tottingham Hotspur Stadium glad that I am not attending a Saints vs Toulose/Harlequin final. Phew!
Unbelievable Mark, that last 10 minutes was something else. I wasn't just on the edge of my seat, I was on the edge of the edge of my seat. Congratulations to the Saints for making this this the nailbiter that a European Championship semi final should be.
I thought Leinster should have taken drop goal opportunities on offer and ditto for Northampton in that final minute
@@gerardkelsh1011 Yes, totally agree, not a time to be concentrating only on hopes of a penalty or getting a try. Ross Byrne missing the penalty that could have made it 23 - 17 didn't help the nerves !
@@brianmsahinhe's useless, he'll never play for Ireland again imo. Can't rely on him.
Just wish Leinster kept their concentration for 80mins. Cian Healys record, etc. didn't help, but there is a mental weakness ... wake up, call. Congratulations, but keep the heads right, especially the subs. 😊
Mark JGP, wow!! And Lowe 👌 82,300 atmosphere electric 🏉
82,300 crowd, new attendance record for a European club rugby game.
99'000 in attendance for Racing 92 v Toulon 2016 final
@@markphilpottinsidesport 2016 final,racing v saracens Saracens won,attendance 59,000 ??.
Racing v Toulon was top 14 final, played in Nou CMp as Parc d France was unavailable.
Great video, Mark.
Leinster subs. came on too early in the second half & Ross Byrne had a bad day at the office!
Short and sweet and to the point 10/10
I was in the Hogan upper. Great atmosphere especially from hill 16. Spent last 5 mins bricking it. The crowd roared them over the line
Fantastic, thanks for letting us know about your experience. It must have been epic.
thanks for review as always..(relieved Leinster fan)
You are welcome and thank you for the comment
Brilliant video Mark great commentary
Thank you for the NICE comment, appreciate it. It was a great game.
Leinsters achilles heel is No. 10
Many agree with you.
Hi Mark, A fantastic game. Leinster did take the foot off in the second half. Saints dug really deep in the second half too. The atmosphere was fantastic (Hogan Stand Lower). We will need to be sharper to put it up to Toulouse (or Quinn’s).
Thanks for the comment mate. I am sure that it would have been brilliant being there. One for the memory banks. Its going to be a ripper of a final.
In premiere level at canal end. The noise was off the charts.
BRILLIANT, thanks for that
Enjoying your videos (found the channel during the World Cup last year).
I was at the game, Leinster had such a fast start, but seemed to run out of steam towards the end of the game. Nerve wracking last 10mins as a Leinster fan. JGP is one of the best players in the world right now.
Less said about Ross Byrnes kicking the better...
I thought Leinster kicked ball away too much and Northampton Saints defended very well.
Thanks for the nice remarks.
Yes brilliant game and close toward the end.
Things will need to be more clinical against Toulouse otherwise it will be Au Revoir
82k fans in the stadium. Speaks to the health of the club game and the competition.
That was more about the Croke park factor
Interesting
Very strange the way Leinster went into coasting mode in the last 25 minutes. Maybe a lack of match fitness as these Leinster players haven't played any rugby in the best part of a month.
Way too much kicking ball away!
100%, Leo messing up again, it was obvious they were not match fit in the second half, they should have played the first week in South Africa, really sad to keep mismanaging at the business end of both comps.
@@readesiun988 I think they will use the next few games in the URC to keep players match fit, so all may be not lost.
@@neilmontgomery3470 I would agree: Leinster looked like a team that decided after Lowe's 3rd try to go on uncalled for "dont panic" which became "lets coast here"....but also the Northampton last try is a forward pass that the touch judge missed as did the TMO
@@mjomalley Some players can be rested without affecting match fitness. Gibson Park and Lowe were absolutely incredible and have shown in the past they can come back from layoffs and play to a fantastic standard. The other ones should play in the URC games to sharpen their game.
The referee was different this referee was fair and honest
Thanks for the comment.
The game started 10 minutes late just to get the crowd in. Great atmosphere! Everyone, including the Leinster management team though it was game over at 45th minute and way to early substitutions we’re made. The foot was taken of the gas and fair play to the Saints they took maximum advantage of our complacency. I did feel their last try was from a forward pass but it was deserved. 80k Leinster fans relieved when Dorris turned it over in the 89th.
Brilliant, thanks or the comment. Epic game, epic last period and amazing crowd. A showcase for how great rugby is at all levels of the game
As regards using Croke Park, that amount of people is amazing.
But GAA pitches are huge and I felt very far away from the game.
Much preferred the Aviva, tbh
Great insight, thanks so much for sharing it.
Well done Mark great review, we Leinster fans were sucking diesel last five minutes ! Leinster subs not good enough , hopefully Ringrose And few others back for final , Saints are a very good team and showed it second half , great match great occasion
Thanks Declan. I have to say I have been impressed with Osborne, gonna be a good one. No 10 is an issue I feel for you guys, so much of the play can come from there if hes on the game. He seems to lack self belief, therefore impacts his decision making. The guys outside him then start off on the back foot. IMHO.
English looking good for the future
Thanks
Are we concentrating too much on defence to the detriment of our attack...maybe something to do with a certain saffa..🤔🤔
Cant help but feel the same team should be fielded for the next urc game. Really think they need more match fitness. Personally i think they should have fielded a stronger team against the lions in SA. I think bringing jimmy o b on as a sub after so long wasn't a great idea. Still onwards and upwards...
Interesting how the Bulls and Leinster appear to be affected most by resting players. In hindsight might have been more clever to run them in SA and have that game in their legs.
@markphilpottinsidesport match fitness is real. It's clear Gibson Park could be rested again unaffected but the likes of Ross Byrne need more games. How is Jack conan not starting more? It's my belief that he could have a big role to play in the final if allowed. He has serious grit when things get tight.
Great game, almost come back from St Hamptons!
Indeed, thanks for the comment
Strange game. Had to listen to the Irish commentary and I thought they must have been watching a different game at times. Yes Leinster dominated possession in that first 40' but they did not look sharp in attack - particularly mistiming passes. Northampton were very solid in defense, rarely committing more than 2 to a ruck unless a turnover was possible; the defenders stayed on their feet. Unfortunately for the Saints, they were also their own worst enemy making a number of handling errors - none more crucial than the one that lost them a certain try in the first half.
Leinster were hanging on at the very end - there's no other way to describe it. Leo & Jacques will realize that had Leinster lost, the decision to rest so many of these players for near 20 days would be seen as the reason why. With the ERCC Final and, the URC playoffs about to begin, a repeat performance like this will result in no silverware again.
Thanks for the comment, much appreciated. Try listening to the Argentina commentators next time ( I did ) and boy, different perspective on the game. Leinster will need to be clinical in the final to beat Toulouse. Every point will count and R Byrne will need to be on point.
It's difficult to put a hardy team like Northampton away with a weak link in the 10 jersey. JS retirement hurting Leinster more than Ireland?
I think Byrne R, looks short of self belief. Thanks for the comment
Leinster nearly choked, but did deserve it in the end. They need to get more from that possession they have to challenge today's winner, most likely, toulouse
I have seen a more clinical side in Leinster this season but not in this game, they will need to bring it against Toulouse, what team makes it to 30 pts first will win, hows that for a prediction.
Is there much rugby played in cancun or even mexico
@niallhcd1 there are two clubs in Cancun, the Dragons and the Hammerheads. In Mexico there are about 800 players and about 20 clubs at the moment and it is growing. Mexico is ranked 48th in World Rugby at the moment. Thanks for asking.
Leinster nearly blew it late again. They have to manage a lead better.
Thanks for the comment.
I was only really panicked on last play as NS had chance to out it wide and they came inside into open arms of Conan and Doris . Leinster undercooked . Resting players a mistake . Either one of Byrnes good players but not at top level 10 requirement . Leinster left 20 points on field at least . Cullen realises mistakes and won’t be repeated . Lack of pace in team without Ringrose or Keenan. Ryan also missed Leinster deserved/earned win but nearly blew it. Never understand a 10 meter up in air kick . That played into NS hands .
@tomf1dublin1 some good notes here thanks for making them. Ross Byrne looks unsure of himself at times and in the final he needs to be on it. He will have Dupont running at him.
@@markphilpottinsidesport I don’t see alternative to Byrne but, we hopefully will get some speed back through Keenan and Ringrose . I am happier we had a big scare rather than 20 points win
Was uncomfortable from start to finish.
Northampton were a little over awed at the start. Why did they give JGP the ball for that first try? Should have had a fight or something to slow it down and get back into the defensive line.
Northampton butchered a certain try as well.
So, overall, Leinster were very lucky to escape.
Are Leinster playing knockout rugby this time around? I.e. playing rugby to beat the opposition instead of playing their own game?
Great, you raise some interesting points, thanks for doing so.
R Byrne is shocking. consistently bad. Leinster need to get the Chequebook out
Richie Mounga ?
northampton last try is a clear forward pass
Rubbish !!
The best team won but Leinster can't take their foot off the throat of a team like Toulouse (assuming) the way they did with the Saints.
How many points did Ross Byrne leave out there? They also can't afford to give away that many points to a team like Toulouse (assuming again)
Thanks for the comment
