I think it's unfortunate how much tipping is expected in America. As a former pizza delivery driver, I was told we were not able to receive raises because of the tips we get. Customers then feel pressured to tip even for bad service and some of my co-workers used to become very upset when not receiving tips and would badmouth customers behind their backs. Whenever I was asked how much of a tip a customer should give me I would tell them that tipping is not required but I would gladly accept any amount should they feel I deserved it. I feel that tips should be given only when you've received good service with a bit of a higher tip for outstanding service. Though I also feel it shouldn't be okay for companies to purposely pay their employees less because they may or may not receive tips. Sometimes I had nights where I made over $100 in tips and some nights I didn't receive any tips at all. It's unfortunate to be forced to rely on such irregular income for your livelihood.
you dont seem to understand imagine if companies had to pay 10 more dollars an hour per employee their ceo might end up losing a few milllion bucks a year that would just be disgraceful for him(sarcasm implied)
They're not denying you a raise because you receive tips. They're denying you a raise because they can.

I think this the first time I have anything good to say about air Canada: the safety video is ok, which is impressive when they have to have it in at LEAST 2 languages (3 for me since I fly to Germany more often)

Maybe I'm just immature, or maybe I'm a terrible person, but I love puns.
Puns are attractive to people because of the power they hold in the very same way swear words hold power. They both get a strong response from people. This is amusing to some people.

at the end i felt emphatic with grey's sentiments, ive always figured if i won the lottery and people asked for money id have a set amount and give them x, but they would then have to sign a contract stating that they are never allowed to talk to me again, and should they do so they will be required to give back the money, then a coworker pointed out im basically paying people to not talk to me :)

Tipping in the end is an act for pompous people in my social world. I'm fine with that idea.
I don't have children and I've always loved puns. Of course as with anything, there are certain puns that are repeated too many times and those individual puns become annoying, but in general I love puns.

Common misconception, in America waiters are paid a minimum hourly wage that is less than the standard minimum wage, however, should their tips plus their hourly wage not make their total income greater than the standard minimum wage the restaurant is legally required to pay them the difference to ensure they are always making at least the standard minimum wage.
Tips, 2 things.
1) Your also enabling the current system and preventing people from getting decent wadges at there job.

20%?! Okay, i am going to be a miser before i'd be tipping 20%. A tip of 10 bucks on a 50 dollar meal? For 10 bucks i'll be getting up and fetching my food from the kitchen myself. Of course the tipping situation around here is different, given that people get paid regularly, but that doesn't mean i don't tip people. But 20%? No way. 10% is my cut off. For 20% the service has to be stellar.
Koru reminds me of Polynesian, and black reminds of Muslim. I dont know much about NZ, are these two traits related to NZ?

GaMeZaHoY but muslims don't use black to represent their religion. it's almost always green.
LOL: Black is the national colour because of its association with the All Blacks rugby team. All our national sports teams wear black often with a white silver fern leaf. (Grey has referred to the black flags sports fans wave decorated this way).
As for the koru... yeah, it's a Polynesian thing though in this case, it represents Maori which are 15% of the population. When white , red and black, it's a symbol often used to represent Maori political or cultural ambitions.
The koru represents an unfurling fern frond so it has undertones of growth and natural environments if it is green.
It's also the logo for Air New Zealand.
So a black flag with a koru could be read here as 'Brought to you by the NZ Rugby Football Union and Air New Zealand'!

How does standby work? Does that mean for two weeks Grey went to the airport and waited all day for a flight, only to go home and come back the next day? That can't be it. Grey wouldn't stand for that.
+TPRJones Stand-by basically allows you to fill a spot on an airplane if it is available. It almost feels like corporate hitch-hiking. People usually get these privileged tickets at a discount (or in many cases like mine, for no cost). I'm not sure what's available to the public, but I personally was given an online tool to look up how full planes were so I could see if it was even worth going to the airport to try and get on. I have had missed/canceled flights before where I was able to look and see that there was little/no chance of me getting on a plane until days later. If you have a busy schedule, that may prevent you from getting on other available planes. Most people who can fly stand-by will simply buy a standard ticket just to guarantee their seat if they are coming back from vacation to prevent any complications with work.
perhaps I'm alone in thinking this but, calling anything about air travel "terminal", seems a bit off- putting.
