How to Change Minecraft's Location & Directory (2023)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 июл 2024
- mklink /D "%appdata%\.minecraft" "OutputLocation"
STORAGE INFO: The symbolic link only points to the new location, so if your files are stored on your E drive, then no space should be taken up on your C drive where you have the symbolic link as a pointer. The symbolic link WILL show space that the destination folder takes up under "properties" tab, HOWEVER the actual space on your drive is NOT taken up by the symbolic link, which you can see when looking at storage space of a drive under the "Devices and drives" section of File Explorer.
Bedrock: Unfortunately due to Microsoft Store hard locking the folder for Bedrock edition, it is near impossible to gain administrative privileges of the files. If you need to change the drive, Microsoft Store allows you to change the drive, but not the path, unfortunately.
Note that using this method inside of a world's folder may require whitelisting as per 1.20 release candidate 1, please refer here for more info if you run into trouble: help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/a...

Thanks to @albertescanes for the following:
PowerShell equivalent:
sl $HOME/AppData/Roaming
New-Item -Path '.minecraft' -ItemType SymbolicLink -Target desired destination path
0:00 - Intro
0:24 - Seperate Minecraft Installations
1:12 - Move Minecraft as a Whole Игры
Heyo, got a question, say you wanna symlink something other than Minecraft, if the folder is not directly in %appdata%, but for example in appdata / local, would you still put the "cd %appdata%" at the beginning and then have
mklink /D "local\.Foldername"
Or would you simply put "%local%" at the beginning?
For instance, there's an Adobe folder both in Local and in Roaming for me. Exact same name. And both Local and Roaming are in %appdata%
Would it work if you didn't put the %appdata" at the beginning, but instead put the full folder location in the quotation marks instead? For example:
mklink /D "C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft"
And what about a folder that isn't in %appdata% at all, but somewhere completely different?
Thank you.
Great question!
%localappdata% will work for that folder that you are asking about, but using cd and then 'full folder location' also works! Alternatively mklink /D "folder/folder/anotherfolder/endfolder" will also work, so mklink /D "local\.Foldername" as well as mklink /D "C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft" will work. So if you want to go to another folder that isn't located in %appdata% you can just forget about the cd command and use that, or you can just use the folder directory for the cd command. It looks like all of the commands you suggested should work. For my video, I just chose these commands specifically for convenience so that the viewers and I wouldn't have to deal with the fact that the we all have a different user profile name, %appdata% just works more easily for a wide range of people.
@@Smalllbuddy Okay so if I understand correctly, it should work if you just copy paste the full folder location for the initial folder, and then do the same for the destination folder.
Thank you for the quick response ^^
@@Hardrockkiller777 Yeah that's right! just make sure the syntax is still proper and you should be good. and anytime!
the fact that mojang hasn't made their game easier to mess with file wise after being out for like damn near 13 years is a disgrace, thanks for the help lol
I know right! Your welcome
no, its microsoft fault
Awesome tutorial, thank you for the help! Performance wise I didn't notice any difference, but I sure feel a lot more relived knowing that Minecraft now isn't gonna top up my C drive at any moment
Of course!
Understandable and pretty quick (besides the time it takes to copy the minecraft folder). Great tutorial!
Thank you! Glad to have helped!
@@Smalllbuddy what do i do if i want to undo it, like after moving to another location, i want to move it to previous location
@@mysterio948 just copy the minecraft folder from your other drive to cdrive then delete the one in your d and should work
@@henry4915 so i did that and all my world saves are gone sooooo i dont what to do, my brother can recover it but it says it will take a lot of time
Minecraft is mostly reliant on storage, so whenever I played the game, I kept losing frames. I knew it was the storage because I have a 3070 and an i7. It's complicated for no reason, but this worked! I appreciate you sm! Now I'm able to play it with good fps and a smooth experience. Thank you
of course! im glad to help :)
Holy heck dude thank you! I never knew that windows had this kind of feature in it and how useful it can be besides changing mc's folder placement. They really should implement a folder changing option in mc itself instead of relying on this, but still better than nothing.
Genuenly thank you for the tutorial and explanation on things and how they work, amazing vid.
your welcome ;)
not me struggling for a couple hours before i stumbled upon this video. thanks man, really appreciate it
Thanks for the video! Providing clear instructions and explanations made the process easy to follow. :)
I'm glad I made it easy to follow and I'm glad to have helped :)
Dude I thank you so much for this I was searching and searching and couldn't figure it out until I found your video you made it so simple THANK YOU
YOU ARE WELCOME
Awesome Tutorial dude, i love how you actually explained what the commands did and everything, underrated
Very helpful, thank you for posting.
You're welcome :)
How do you undo this and change the installation folder back to the C drive?
thank you sooo much, my disc space on C wasnt enough for mc so i just moved over the mc folder to D:\, but mc just created a new .minecraft folder on C:\ so i need to comepletly change the mc location. This made it :D now i can play like mc for another 5 years until the D:\ is too full XD thank you :)
When I do that is bedrock edition storage gonna be the new folder I created for java edition?
and can I name the new folder .minecraft ?
thank you for the tutorial! I struggled a little but end up working fine!
Thanks so much this helped alot because i needed to get space in my C users TYSM ;D
I always run into issues when I try stuff like this, but this worked! Legendary video man
Sorry bout the late reply, but youre welcome!!
absolutely beautiful tutorial, thanks a lot man
your welcome!!
I linked it
when I try to open the .minecraft folder in the appdata folder thats linked, it says "Location is not available. The filename.directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect." will this be a problem?
Thank you this is finally what I've been looking for
Thanks bro, love it!
the problem is, is it really make my system drive have more free space?
its just look like a copy folder, when the original folder still have the same file and the same size
Great tutorial, thanks a lot man
you're welcome!
ive got my versions+webcache2 stuff in one folder then the same thing inside my new .minecraft folder, what should i do?
thank you so much helped out so much for orginizing my copmputer
Edit: Im very glad to be your 200th subscriber congrats!
I'm glad to help, and thank you!!
so to install a new forge client what would I need to do? just let it do what it need or alter the install location?
it worked! THANK YOUUU
Nice tutorial. Saved me 51 gigs of space on my C drive
I'm glad ;)
Thank you so much!! i was able to do this for Java and for Bedrock edition as well!
I'm glad!!
I did that, but it still says I don't have enough storage. Do I delete the minecraft thing in my C drive?
Thank god you made this video I was trying to figure this out, thanks 🙏
This was helpful, thanks!
youre welcome!
Hey, I wanna move my MC installation from C: to D:, can i just use the first method?
Hi Smalllbuddy, I am experiencing a problem in which whenever I change the location like you showed us in the video, the Minecraft launcher automatically gets deleted. And when I download it again, its going back into the C drive. Can you please help me fix this problem?
yo for example when I change resource pack and then I turn off minecraft it launches with the previous pack, or when I add server and then I turn minecraft off its not there
Thank You So Much, saved me
Thank you mate, wont have to worry about low storage on os disk now
Sorry for being late, but you are welcome!
hey! i have tlauncher and sk launcher... i use tlauncher to play 1.8.9 and sk launcher for survival and this both launcher have default place as .minecraft in sk launcher how do i put tlauncher files in another folder but sklauncher at same appdata
OMG FINALLY A VIDEO THAT WORKS! THANK YOU
course!
Thanks, man. You're a life saver!
You are welcome!
Fantastic tutorial, thanks!
You're welcome!!
it works but for some unknown reason it isnt copying over my installations if i go to my minecraft launcher? like everyone is copied it just isnt showing up..
after this, when i try to launch I just get a error message saying "unable to start micecraft" and also I get logged out of the launcher everytime I reopen it
you are a life saver😭
Totally works, I used the powershell command because for some reason the cmd command don't create the shortcut in Roaming folder.
Well I'm glad it worked in the end!
yo im having some trouble with this, whenether i try to put the command it says "Cannot create a file when that file already exists." but there's no direct access of .minecraft like in the video, what can i do to solve it?
try restarting ur pc and making sure minecraft and its launcher dont open on start up, then delete .minecraft. also enabled seeing hidden folders. worst case theres should be a command to delete a folder somewhere and you could run that
cool video helped me a lot but why where you recording this at 1AM
it seems my minecraft is very big and this is taking time but seriously thank you for the help!
I'm glad to help you with your storage needs!
TYSM BRO! You Made Me Free Up 10GB Of Space On My C Drive TYSM!
you are a life saver thank you soo much
After everything should I paste all of the other Minecraft data onto that new folder?
Yes, that's exactly what you should do!
u dont know how much i needed this tutorial thank you so much !!!!
I gotchu bro!
Hello! When i choose the end folder do i choose the .minecraft folder or the folder where i wanna put the .minecraft folder into?
the .minecraft folder!
Thank you so much for this ! My C drive was so low on storage and not only do I have room for Minecraft on E but I also am out of the red for C lol
Im glad to help!
just wondering will minecraft updates work like normal with the files being whisked to the new folder?
Yes!
works perfect - thanks 👍
youre welcome :)
Thank you! I needed space to run mods on Minecraft
Sorry about replying late but youre welcome!
Hey hello so all of this worked and thx but whenever i launch Minecraft it sometimes launch and other time its says error code -2 unable to launch and if it does launch when i click on a world either modded or vanilla the game freezes and then crashes and gives samer error code and sometimes it just says sorry unable to launch Minecraft
does the moving thing work with a flash drive or is it only internally?
It works externally too!
hey man, would this work if i want to do this on another game? like change the .minecraft to the name of the game folder
for sure!
if I were to try to do this with curseforge as well, how would I go about that?
hey so i had to move my files from drive C to drive D. if i understand this correctly, does this mean all new changes (i.e. creations of new worlds) default to the D drive and use D's storage? thanks for the tutorial bro really helped me get somewhere, maybe solve my issue
yep it sure does!
if i moved this to a 3TB Seagate drive , does it improve performance and the quality of the game? , like for example if i want to use mods , would it start lagging or?
Unfortunately lag isn't so simple to track down like that. Most likely this would have very little to no impact on frames per second, or ping, since you are moving it to (correct me if im wrong) an external hardrive, it would probably have a slightly negative effect on the startup time of the game since your system would have to go through a slower port (USB) to get to the game. If you are looking to reduce lag, this most likely will not help you, sorry
The directorys are linked but when i open the launcher there is no versions idunno why
OMG thnaks man you helped a lot
course!
Cheers mate, after a bit of mucking around, it worked for me!
I have a question for you.
I did this on a new install. If I want to install mods, is there a problem running the forge installer?
Or should I reverse it, do the install and run the command again after?
Cheers
Awesome I'm glad it worked! This should work totally normally for forge and you shouldn't have to do anything further to make forge work. I did one time however run into a mod that didn't work because of this. This is one mod out of thousands that I've tried though, and this shouldnt be of much concern.
@Smalllbuddy awesome TY for the quick reply!
Do you know if there is anything special about installing Java to another drive?
You are a genius dude! Thank you so much for the help like seriously thanks!
Sorry for replying so late but im glad i could help!
thx worked and minecraft launcher also recognized all my previouse saves
one thing to note: i have put the file in F/games/.minecraft and first i just wrote only F:/.minecraft
in windows 11 there is no arrow pointing down to show file direction you just need to click the empty row after the file name
Thank you so much!
Thank you for this!
Of course ;)
how do i do if i want to do the same thing but for a folder that is in Documents\My Games, how do i use the "cd" command for this
Ah great question just forget about the cd command and replace ".minecraft" with the directory to your documents\my games folder for example: mklink /D "C:/Users/Things/Documents/My Games/Game" "D:/Destination"
I think I might've gotten the slashes wrong, but you get the idea
Worked great thanks!
You are welcome I'm glad to help!
thx man, very helpful
It works, thanks!
Your welcome!
Very useful, thanks buddy
Course!
So wait does this still use the storage on your C drive since the symlink shortcut is still in the C drive? or does it use up the storage in the drive which you have it linked to? Great video! hopfully you can answer this because if its using the storage in the C drive then this is not what I want to do lol
it uses the storage in the new location you have it linked to!
Does this also make mods stored on the drive you moved minecraft to?
yes
Thank you so much sir! Also is it possible to completely make the folder in the F drive permanent and then just delete the folder in C afterwards?
unfortunately, not! Glad to help tho!
@@Smalllbuddy I see.
any time I try and open the launcher is just says "the game has crashed" and gives me error code 0x1. the support page it sends me to has almost no information and is completely useless. the official minecraft launcher doesn't work but lunar client does, does anyone have any ideas?
If Im trying to use curseforge and it reinstalls even with the command run successfully what do I do
Wait if they're linked, doesn't that mean Minecraft won't be on this SSD when I try to open it on a new PC?
Minecraft will be locate to wherever you moved it, so if you moved it to an external hard drive and plugged that into a new computer, then linked minecraft to the external hard drive, you would be able to play with all of your saves
When i try to open the minecraft launcher it says "The Game has crashed" and it doesn't load.. Is there a way for me to fix this?
This helped, thanks a lot :)
Glad to help ;)
So basically if I change my directory in the launcher it will only take effect on the world saves and mods right? But the game itself is always going to be on C drive? So if I ever want to install any mods, I have to access the new directory, but not the game folder in C.
correct mods/saves can be moved through launcher. You can use the symbolic link to move MC off the C drive if you need.
@@Smalllbuddygot it thanks 👍👍
Also
If I use launchers like modrinth do I need the official game launcher?
Or both?
Very useful. Thank you
youre welcome!
Thanks a lot!
I moved my minecraft from my C drive to my ssd using your guide so that my loading speed and launching it would be faster, but now it's still just as slow, if not slower. Is there any way to get around this?
it likely isn't a problem with the sym link. Either a mojang (minecraft launcher) problem, ssd problem, or I suppose that since mojang still use the default directory it still may end up launching from the C drive somehow?
Hey I don't know i do it correctly but when i download Minecraft drive c is still increase
Thank you. My C drive has downloads n stuff so it makes my pc fan turn on a bit but my d drive has tons of space.
So i too have a question, I ran the command promt as administrator, but that would make the appdata folder open in on the admin account. So i was wondering if theres a way to make it open a specific user/accounts appdata instead of just the admin account
EDIT: For anyone else having the same issue i figured it out, Run cmd as admin, but instead of doing %appdata% do this: cd C:\Users\(account name)\AppData\Roaming
Oh awesome! I'm glad you found a fix for this!
Thank you so much! (:
of course!!!
It works!!!!!!! Now my C Drive finally have enough storage.
I'm glad to have helped you :)
when i did it, the games going even slower! How do i reverse this?!
Bro you saved my life! Thank you very much!
yw
Hey thank you i think i did all correctly but minecraft create the .minecraft shortcut in the windows/system 32 instead of roaming and it can't be move into roaming beacuse its always says "the folder is open in another program" but i can't find in what program. Do you know how could i move it?
Okay so I would recommend opening task manager and closing all java applications and minecraft by selecting "end task" on everything related to it. Then you should be able to delete or move the link. I believe everything will still work if you move the link but I'm not 100% sure, however, you can always delete it and then redo the command in the correct location.
i could not find any task that is related to java or minecraft but i just missed the part where you typed ''cd %appdata%,, so thats why it created in the system 32. Still thanks for your hard work and for the tutorial
i have a question, my minecraft still has the c drive one as default so if i store things on c drive's minecraft folder does it use my other drive's storage?
and if i create a new minecraft installation would i be able to just leave it as default(c drive) or do i have to change the directory to my other drive that i want it to be stored?
@@Pineapple343 Yes it moves the storage, and yes you just leave the installation under the C drive.
this literally made me free up 20gb of space. thank you so much man
Your welcome!!
Hey man thank you very much for this, I did all the steps correctly but minecraft is still in c drive, It converted to my F drive but it's still in my C drive, should I delete it from my C drive or leave it?
It will still be shown in the original drive, however it will not actually be stored there. This is normal
@@Smalllbuddy yes it worked thx !
