In this Units of History episode we venture into the world of Warhammer Fantasy. Many of its factions draw inspiration from real history and this is especially true of the Winged Lancers of Kislev who are closely modelled after the Polish Winged Hussars. Big difference being that while the historical variant charged the ranks of the Ottomans, the Warhammer variant charges into the ranks of Demons from the Realms of Chaos.
We begin the episode with an intro on Kislev lore by looking at the geography and geopolitics of the region. Next we discuss the origins of the Winged Lancers of Kislev and how they grew to be a prominent part of the army of Kislev. We then take a look at recruitment, deployment, equipment and service history. Along the way it should be quite evident where the lore of Warhammer has drawn from real military history. For instance the Siege of Kislev City during the Great War Against Chaos is quite analogous to the Siege of Vienna in 1683.
Stay tuned for more episodes on the units from the upcoming Total War Warhammer 3 game. I hope that these lore videos help breath life into the game as we head towards launch.

Warhammer Fantasy: When it started, 40 years ago, I'd have said that it seemed quite generic and unimaginative, I poor copy perhaps of Tolkien's work spread over a world that could be said to be little more than a caricaturized version of Earth, but over these decades it has become quite possibly the deepest traditional fantasy setting in the world. The setting is now a masterpiece, enabled by this progressively expanding richness in it's lore, in all it's factions, cultures, geographic regions, characters and history.
That Games Workshop scrapped all this for their new Age of Sigmar: a stale, hollow and artificial setting nearly as empty as Warhammer Fantasy in it's formative years... is difficult to describe in words.
In any case, I would certainly endorse further explorations into the lore of Warhammer Fantasy by this channel or any others that take interest.

@@bharatbheesetti1920 With Age of Sigmar. The Old WH:FB was very hard to get into and pursuing the hobby was way more costly (if I had to guess, I'd say a good starting army is at least around 100 EUR) than getting into it's Sci-Fi equivalent 40k, one of the main reasons why WH:FB didn't sell well outside Europe. Age of Sigmar scrapped most of the complicated stuff and made it way easier to get into.
The only problem is: While AoS lore is compatible with the old WH:FB lore (it's a sequel/ continuation of the story), the game system is not.

I sincerely hope this is just the first in a series of many episodes diving deep into the lore of Warhammer units. If I might make a suggestion, the Black Guard of Naggarond would be a fine choice to cover in the next episode.
