Sweet Surrender [John Denver] FAST Fingerpicking Guitar Lesson 1 FOR BEGINNERS
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 окт 2024
- John Denver- although very famous for his great songs and vocals, was definitely overlooked as a guitarist. In this lesson 1 of a series learning "Sweet Surrender," the focus is on the fingerstyle or fingerpicking guitar- and learning how to gain speed (this song is very fast!). The good news is, there are only 2 chords in this song (G and D)! But to gain speed (which we will learn one step at a time) these lessons which will span over a 3 to 4 week period starts for beginners by learning how to play it slow. Each week, we will add some more speed to the song and also look at some other techniques along the way. Lesson 1 focuses on one easy fingerpicking pattern and changing between the G and D chords while fingerpicking the pattern John used. This lesson is FOR BEGINNERS!

I love this guy. He starts you out slow, and if you will just stay with it, you will learn so much faster.
Hey Donna, thank you for the kind words and a big YES to learning faster! Have a great weekend!!
bob
John Denver played this song in A major. It's Ok I suppose if you want to play it differently but I prefer original version by far.
Hey @@garyhopkins9275 , you are correct! In fact in his live video, he tuned down his guitar a whole step and played in the A position (A and E chords) while the band was in the key of G. Maybe you are peaking in on my filming or something because I go over this for the next lesson of this series and also show other keys to play and sing this song in. All depends on your vocal range what key works best for each person. Most singers range drops lower as they get older and John was no exception. But what struck me was John performing in G and tuning his guitar down!! I guess Mr. Denver had several guitars on stage with different tunings. Anyway, now you know what's coming... Good ears Gary and thank you!

This is great stuff! Many of the "beginner" teachers seem to forget that they are teaching a "beginner". Thanks a lot!
Hey M D, thank you for taking this lesson and glad you were able to understand everything. Regarding doing new lessons for me... I really try very hard to make a point of explaining things and not assuming you know what I'm talking about. I've been watching some old re-runs of this game show called "Card Sharks" with Bob Eubanks. He's so perfect at going over the rules of the game each and every episode, to make sure he's not leaving out anyone just getting there. I know he might be an unlikely hero (no one would guess) but that's what I am striving for. Do me a favor and don't tell anyone that Bob Eubanks is my hero... ha ha.. !! have a great weekend and thank you!

just discovered you a couple minutes ago, i nearly cried because when i was first learning guitar i wish there was someone like you to talk like this to me, you're so calm and the way you're teaching this is lovely, best of luck for your channel, hope all is well.
Great to hear from you and thank you for the kind words- so appreciated! This whole series of Sweet Surrender is going to be a lot of fun, so I hope you will join me for that as well. And if you need any help, I'm here as well. Wishing you a great year on your guitar 2021! bob
I never look up any other teacher you are so great at what you do how you break it down step by step you were made to teach this art thankyou so much for YOU!!
Hi Jo, wow!! Thank you for all the kind words and really HAPPY to have you here!
Let me know if you get stuck on something or need some help. I'm glad you are learning this song!!
Have a great guitar weekend and please keep me posted with your progress..!!

Wow...I had to take a moment to reflect on time spent un-wisely trying to learn online from sites with hundreds of thousands subscribers which I used as a gauge to reason they knew how to instruct successfully. Today I watched this video and finally, finally found what's been missing, thank you very much.
Hey Mo, it's great to hear from you and thank you so much for the kind words! What we are doing over here is more hands on and I'm here to help. Here's my e mail - acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com . Please e mail me and I can send you a bunch of my courses. Everything is free to the group here. You probably can maneuver around the guitar from taking a bunch of the lessons so, all is not lost! I went through this leson last night Bob, and as always, I just have to say, you are so inspiring ....to be able to follow this was such a joy...although I did have to use my super powers of concentration when fingerpicking the D chord and changing from the 4th string to the 5th string ...reminded me of the melody note in the song Long Monday, so that really helped me to cement the sequence !!! The The best thing was the homework ...I have so little time for anything in the daytime...but it was so great to be able to pick up my guitar and just practice...priceless in my circumstances !!! ...Just wanted to share a special moment today...I was playing through BREEZE...and my lovely 84 year old mom started to sway and dance to the beat in time as I played ...I had to hold back the tears......
Hi Susan! So glad to hear that your guitar is bringing a lot of joy in your life, and getting to share it with others is a wonderful feeling.
Next thing we are going to do is find your singing key to this song as this is always an important consideration. Ultimately the goal is to be able to play the same exact song in all the keys and be able to find the key that is comfortable for your voice. All of your guitar experience is paying off, and you are getting to experience some repetition in the patterns and chords. Very exciting!!!
Say hi to mom and dad and thanks for this note!! Back soon!!

I could never imagine me being able to fingerpick! You are truly the Master of teaching guitar Bob. I am so delighted, Im not great but I can play a tune. make a few mistakes sometimes but I just start over. Im just so thankful I wish I could thank you in person. Practice but have fun. Bless your heart. thanks heather.
Hi Heather, you know I try to remember everyone's name here but the display name sometimes throws me off! I'm of course thrilled you are fingerpicking and you deserve the credit for working at it and taking so many of the courses here. I can always tell when someone's playing vs. watching the videos, just by the realistic pace.. it does take time, and no matter what level we get to, there's always something new to learn. I'm so glad the lessons are helping you and as always, wishing you the best. Thanks for being a great student (and guitarist!!).

Thanks for that brilliant video and lesson, Bob.
I notice that I lack a lot of theoretical notions for understand and apply them. So I will continue to work on the chords and improve the speed and the fluidity.
Hi Viv, there has been a lot of confusion with this subject and I see people trying to play songs from Artists that have difficult chord positions in the key the artist is playing in when a capo would make life a lot easier. The basic purpose is to be able to play any song in any key, or being able to use easier chords to a hard song- this is what I will always do. Hope all is well and than you for letting me know..!!
Hi Bob! Hope you are doing well.Thank you for this lesson. This is my next challenge. Having a blast!
Hi dakotahstr, yes, doing well but busy with my band. I just got back from another little tour. Hope you are having some good luck and fun with Sweet Surrender!! Have a great weekend!!
Hi Bob. Good to see you. Hope and pray all is well. Thanks for the vid. I have been itching to learn a new fingerpicking pattern. I needed something new. This is great. Looking forward to the next in the series.
Keep one eye out for those billhillys.🤣

Hey my friend Herb, it's great to hear from you and yes, all is well! I'm glad to be back after a long battle with my studio blowing up and I actually am ahead of schedule as a key piece of equipment got repaired just this last week. I had this one guy who was supposed to be great, keep it for 3 months. I went to his place and took it back, brought it to this old hillbilly and he fixed it right while I was there. Something to be said about those old hillbillies.. (charged half of what the other guy was charging.
Glad you are still pickin' away and see you in the next video- have a great weekend- bob
What a fantastic idea Bob! Your method is great. What a beautiful song I just discovered ! What a beautiful and moving voice! I only knew "Leaving on a jet plane" and "Take me home".
The crescendo in speed and volume is captivating. Surprisingly with only two chords. I'll listen to "Sweet Surrender" on loop " everyday
No difficulty in this 1st lesson. I got in the beat right away, but I expect the worst :-))
Hi Viv, John Denver is outstanding as far as I'm concerned, and I'm not only talking about his songs and singing. This song is very accessible to the group here, and proof of this is how well you were able to pick it up. Very excited for everyone to get this one!!

Thanks Diana, great song and it uses the same pattern you learned!!! YEAH!!!
Bob, how do you deal with the frustration and boredom in the process of learning guitar? How do you motivate yourself?
Hi Anne, great to hear from you and I will answer this question from my perspective (and try to be as brief as possible (good luck with that bob!)
Here goes: First I want to say in all honesty that guitar and music in general came very easy to me, so much so that I am like an idiot with almost everything else in life. I'm certain something in your life came easy for you and you didn't have to work at it so hard. But in music for me, there's one thing that I've never been happy about, and that's my singing... I hate my voice, even after years of vocal coaching, singing (out of tune) on stage, and sounding just slightly better than a toilet flushing. You would have thought that the talent in music would have carried over to my vocal cords but no, didn't happen. And no matter how hard I worked at it, it didn't seem like I was making any improvement at all. TALK ABOUT FRUSTRATION!
For about 4 years I totally quit, and when people asked me to sing a lead or even harmony, I said NO! I had enough! But one day I was at a very pleasant jam session with some of my bluegrass friends and they asked me to add some harmony to their songs. They were so encouraging to the point that I stopped being so self conscious of what I was trying to do, and just had fun. For the first time in my life, I didn't care about how I sounded, and just let it out with joy. As time went on, the prior frustrations of singing seemed to vanish away to the point of actually not throwing up when I would hear my voice in a recording. Now don't get me wrong, I'm no John Denver, but I have learned to love the process of learning a new song and giving myself a free pass (in other words, no expectations) when it wasn't good. So I'm sorry for this long answer but in a nutshell what helped me was to enjoy the process and savor the moments to hear even the slightest improvement in my voice. Maybe good some days, maybe terrible- I forgive myself because I know that tomorrow and the days that follow- I will and can be better.
I don't know if telling you this helps at all, but perhaps think back to what motivated you to want to play guitar in the first place, and listen and get inspired by your favorite music. Tap your feet, sing (I'm sure you are better than me) even pull out your guitar and try to play along, even if you don't know the chords or anything- just keep some sort of rhythm with it (even tapping on the top of the guitar). At some point in time by enjoying music, and having your guitar by your side, the process and boredom might vanish. The only expectations will be to have fun and revel in any little thing that moves you forward. Don't forget to give yourself the lifetime free pass. That seems to work well with my voice..
bob
@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Bob, l’m so~so~appreciate your long answer .l think l truly being too hard to myself, because l can’t help but judge the every single rhythm l played, then feel not perfect, not satisfied. l would like to practice “just have fun and always get the free pass”. The most important, l can feel something back even just imagine l’m tapping on the top of the guitar for my favorite songs. l’ll always remind myself to enjoy the process and savor the moment, then keep going.Your advice are very enlightening ~Big thanks again.🥰🥰🥰
Hi @@anniewatson5661 , oh, I'm so glad that this helped! I just finished filming video 2 of this series (now I have to put it all together) but had to sing. This song is a vocal song but in the end, it's not about me, it's about everyone watching and being able to do the lesson. So I guess if I helps a few people, I get the free pass ( call me "free pass bob" ha ha).
Wishing you a ton of musical happiness Annie. I have no doubt that a little inspiration will go a long way for you!!

@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons awesome: im dont make my living at it but I'm advanced: I can learn just about anything.. so I could easily read the picking pattern for this song and learn it that way but I have no idea where to find it..tho I could check youtube..my ear is not as good..if I had the picking pattern I could learn this song fast but have to adjust the key because my voice is lower. 😀
Hi@@lynnolsen1498 , thanks for the info.
I just listened to the song and it sounds like the guitar is not tuned in standard tuning. But you can still play this song with standard tuning but some of the voicings in the melody picking lines would need some substitutions.
The basics of the picking is the following (this is for standard tuning):
Couple ways to count out the measures- 'll go with 4 downbeats per measure counted in 1/8 notes
G
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
6 4 3 2 6 4 3 2
T T I M T T I M
Then the other fingers are playing the melody notes during the measure. But this is the basic pattern structure.
Update: Just checked and here's a lesson on the song: ruclips.net/video/EGEZl8gj_aE/видео.html
I think he's got tab for this too.
And yes, this is in an open G tuning and not standard.
Hope this helps!!!! Let me know!
