This was a WONDERFUL lesson!! ❤ I have been working on the pinch pattern now for months...but I know I'm doing it wrong. I have to change my technique...You're really the ONLY person on here that does such a fine job of showing! It could do with a little bit more zoom in though...and I really didn't understand what you meant re:.fingering the chord? Don't play the 3 fingered G, only 1 finger? And don't that with every chord? What about like the F 4-fingered Barre, or B or F#m barre?
Hi Jared. I’m going for the inside/outside today. I’m 72 years old so it really is never too old to learn. I never thought of just playing the necessary strings rather than the whole chord. What a good day. Thank you so much.
Lot of People play very beautiful guitar solos and songs.. but non ever explained to a new comer, but you did. that means a lot when someone do really nice thing with a real intention. appreciate your work. thank you.
Hello I'm 74 yrs old I've been playing on and off for a number of years, always with a flat pick. Now while fingerpicking is a challenge it is really nice way to express the music. Thank you for these 4 patterns to help get started. I figured out the pattern 1 and 2 now I have something else to challenge myself with. It does take time to teach the fingers to work independently but surprisingly in a week or 2 you can see the results. Thank you for a well explained lesson
I absolutely LOVE that you use an actual song as context for your lessons. This adds purpose toward a real goal, and not just plunking chords without direction. Subscribed.
I learned those picking patters when I was 14 and I can still play with them today, even after forty years of ignoring the guitar. However, now I practice two hrs every day and I’m so happy that those picking patterns made it into my long term muscle memory. Small victory in the war to become better player. Thanks!
@@TatsumiOga682 I was a rock & roll bass player who played some guitar to write songs. I played bass with my fingers 99% of the time, also hard to believe from guys who play bass with a pick like a guitarist. I didn't play folk music on guitar or bass.
AS a late starter (65!) and a retired elementary teacher, I appreciate a well laid out scope and sequence. Thanks for your brilliant breakdown. Just what I was looking for.
Travis picking was the first thing I learned when I started playing guitar. That said, I learned it using the thumb and three fingers, so I had to adjust my picking for some songs by leaving out the third finger. "4+20", for instance, is played with only the thumb and two fingers, while ""Guinevere" uses three fingers and thumb. This video is well done and explains it very well. Thanks.
Wow! I'm blown away by the quality and clarity of you instructions and teaching! At 67 years old, I thought I might try finger picking ONE LAST TIME. I enjoyed your lesson. I like the "Inside-Out" pattern. First lesson on RUclips that I could actually sit through and not feel like I'm switching off. At the end of it I actually got it and know I will confidently practice them. You're really good and clear and bearable to watch. Some on RUclips are just too much. Thank you. May God bless you.
just started using your Chords with Color chart and it's amazing. I have never seen this type of resource and it's going to have a HUGE impact on my playing. Thanks!!!
My introduction to finger picking was many years ago when a friend of mine showed me how to play "Black Bird" by the Beatles. I started with a 2 finger picking. From there i eventually added another finger. I now play with all my picking fingers. Thanks for the variations.
Hi I'm 137 and just picked a guitar up for only the 2nd time in last 100 years so thought I'd try learning while I've still got time as I ain't getting much younger anytime soon. Thanks bud ps I used to play with Merle Travis daddy when I was 11 back in the delta, thanks again buddy.
Hey, Jared. I've been struggling for days to come up with a fingerpicking riff for a song I'm writing and this lesson was an epiphany. Thanks for helping me come back to the basics. I gotta keep telling myself: Keep it simple, stupid. This lesson really was a huge help. My new favorite--the 3rd, pinch pattern. I always love your videos. Don't know why I haven't subscribed, but I just did. Bless you, man!
Great lesson, Jared. I taught myself the basic pinch pattern back in 1965 from listening to PP&M records and developed the rest on my own over the years. I've been asked to teach my style but I never really broke things down, I just play, often using a mixture of all 4 patterns and more, with variations, within the same chord progression. Your lesson is a great starting place that I will pass on to friends who want to learn Travis Picking. A few years ago I tried to teach myself Skruggs style 5-string banjo. At first the rolls drove me nuts because they have a very different rhythmic feel and are kind of backwards from guitar (55+ years of muscle memory will do that to you). Although I never finished learning banjo, I incorporated aspects of banjo rolls into my Travis Picking to great effect.
Same story for me - just a couple years later than you started. I vividly remember sitting in the open door way of my cabin playing the pattern over and over until it became natural. I don't remember another thing about church camp that year. The PP&M song that hooked me on folk style acoustic guitar was the Ballad of Spring Hill on the LP A Song Will Rise. Bob Dylan's Free Wheelin' album was also a huge inspiration.
Very well done sir. Ive been playing since Johnson was president and you've explained Travis picking as well as it can be explained. Wonderful song to select for the example!
Good stuff, man! I watch a lot of youtube, and I see a lot of guitar lessons, and I appreciate your approach. I really think the pinch pattern is the most versatile, although the descending arpeggio works well for gospel and hymns, which I play a fair amount of, as I play mainly at church. I like to use a combination of finger picking for intros, strumming for the main body of most of the contemporary worship songs that I play, and then sometimes a slower picking as a coda or outro to give the songs a more contemplative feel. I actually end up mostly playing a hybrid picking pattern, maintaining the root as the bass, outlining the chord with my other three fingers and incorporating elements of the melody. I'm always striving to get better, so I subscribed today. I see you've got a lot of great stuff! Oh, and thanks!
After three days an hour a day of work, I' manage step 1,2,3 but still a lack of consistency, aspecially when I try to sing, but how great this lesson is ! It's also easier after a glass of beer ^^. It's the third time I try to get the travis picking style and it's the first time, with this approach (step one first, then step tow, then step three) that I'm starting to feel it. The other two lessons started with step 3. I found pattern 1 and 2 harder to switch between chords even if it's easier at first as there is no "wait", Pattern 3 it's so beautiful. If you come from The Fingerstyle improvisation video and you are intermediate or beginner player, I strongly recommand to master this lesson first before, starting the improvisation part. I think the thumb consistency with a certain mastery of the other finger variations is something we have to manage before thinking of improvising with this style. Thanks again.
My ultimate goal has been to play Fingerstyle guitar and to understand what I was doing beyond just memorizing songs so that I might be able to play any song I like with an appropriate Fingerstyle motif. I like all four patterns you've demonstrated in this video, favor the 2nd & 3rd patterns (pattern 3 minus that 8th note ~ the bounce). Thank for this lesson & the printed materials 👍🏾👍🏼🎯🤝🏼.
Thanks David! Glad you found this helpful. I have a few more fingerpicking lessons coming up over the new couple months too. I hope they all help with your ultimate goal. Cheers, -Jared
Jared, thanks for making this video. Your a great teacher. I've been playing guitar for 3 years and am still learning. This lesson will help give me more more to learn.
My favorite pattern was the 4th one. The reason is simple; it's the only one I didn't know. I knew the other 3 and constantly play 2 of them. So I have to start using #2 and add #4. Thanks for this. 😄

Hello Jarred from Cairns in Tropical North Queensland Australia 🇦🇺. Many thanks for your helpful instruction. Much appreciated. I look forward to more of your videos.
Randomly "fingerpick" to accompany my vocals, but have not used any real structure to date. QUESTION: In the context of vocal accompaniment how to you decide which pattern to use in a particular song? OR, do you just use the pattern you are most skilled at?
Been looking for something like this for a long time. Thank you! And to all you late starters. I agree with you. Great muscle memory picking (through hours of practice) with a few basic patterns (styles) will allow us to create great clear pleasing sound on the guitar, while exploring the notes and left hand positions experimentally. That is my theory anyway. I think next after this is to start exploring the various notes that work well together. And then the use of majors and minors to embody emotional and story changes.
Yes, these are a sensual to learn. I get videos all the time. Let’s say you must know this. Or you must not do this or you must not do that. People are going to play what’s more comfortable to them not what somebody else wants them to do. Everybody has their own style. Everybody has their own way of learning. I know I did. I must’ve done something right because I’m 70 years old and I’ve been playing guitar since 1974. I remember this very well that it was the same year that my nephew was born was the same year I picked up a guitar 1974. He’s 49 years old. That’s how long I’ve been playing guitar but just the same I learn it way I could learn not the way somebody else wanted me too. My guitar teacher was soul surfer Johnny Fortuune. he was an excellent teacher. He taught me how to play finger style guitar. Even taught me how to play Chad Atkins pieces. He was my best friend for 30 years. I miss him dearly a great friend and a great teacher never wanted me to do it. His way only what was comfortable for me. When I would make little mistakes, he would correct me, but I learned how to develop my own style of playing my plain things my way, and not the way other people want me to play . I still play to this day in Love Guitar.❤️😁🎸👍🏼😁
Great lesson. The pinch pattern goes best with the song. The descending arpeggio has more of a John Denver feel. Nice Tele solo. As a Bakersfield Sound freak, I really dug this.
Another guitar player on RUclips says there’s only two picking patterns you should know. I say there’s a lot to learn when it comes to finger style guitar. It’s no easy task all the years that I have played guitar. I’m still learning. I don’t care how long you’ve played I can honestly say one thing if you know something I don’t know I sure would love to learn it from you.👍🏼👍🏼😁🎸
Hello am from India 52 yrs old hope its never too late to learn guitar 🎸 my problem is that when I press the cord but it's not giving me good sound like u 😊
Just look closely at what is causing the wrong sound n adjust ooo keep at it ooo do 5mins at a time stop ooo cum back in 5 n hav another attempt ooo U can do it keep going ooo
HP,Yes !It takes time to reach at good level of accuracy (playing and produce nice sound). You can learn and know how to play guitar at 52 but basic skills not advanced skills.A part from guitar, even other instruments,it is advised to start at childhood like 5 years 6 years old.Especially Violin, guitar, piano,French horn , accordéon and oboe .
Hi “India 52” - I began playing later in life (I was 47). This video is very good but definitely not beginner level. In my humble opinion, if you are having a challenge making and changing between basic open cords ( G, C, A, F, D, E) and find Barr cords do not sound clean because your can not hold the position, well I suggest you look at more basic videos. One example of beginner to advances lessons can be found at Justin Guitars. He’s a very good teacher and his sessions go from the very basics to advanced in a structured way. (I used his lessons for months.) If you can find a local teacher that is often the best method but can get expensive. Two other tips - the setup on your guitar (string height above the fret board) is important. Too high makes the guitar very hard to play. If it’s hard to press the strings down, have the guitar looked at by a good player. Thickness of the strings can also be a challenge. If you are newer to playing, perhaps use a lighter gauge string set (11’s or even 10’s). Once you grow better you can switch to 12’s (I assume you are playing an acoustic guitar). Good luck and don’t give up
Great lesson and as always you are great to follow and understand. This is really worth spending some time on the techniques, thanks for sharing Jared.
@@soundguitar You may not know the joy you bring. My dad is a master guitar player/singer. I have avoided learning from him all my life and now he is in his last days. I am finally sitting down for lessons with him and your lessons are a supplement to his that allow me to get up to speed between sessions. (you have the same Travis style...his fingers are like a spider on the strings). It makes things better for both of us. He also enjoys listening to you play. Thanks again

Thank so much you are gifted. I will practice this.
Your are a great teacher sir, love your chord chart they're beautifully arranged at one place 🔥🔥✨💕
Great lesson. The pinch pattern goes best with the song. The descending arpeggio has more of a John Denver feel. Nice Tele solo. As a Bakersfield Sound freak, I really dug this.
The first two patterns, my index finger wants to play the inside notes. Is that ok?
Yep! Use index for the inside notes
Thanx a lot for this great lesson and the Chords - very helpfull!
Dude you the best. the 4th pattern i LOVEDD
Theee and four both sound great. I’ll learn ‘‘em both.
Great choice! :)
really love ur voice, i could listen to it forever.
Another guitar player on RUclips says there’s only two picking patterns you should know. I say there’s a lot to learn when it comes to finger style guitar. It’s no easy task all the years that I have played guitar. I’m still learning. I don’t care how long you’ve played I can honestly say one thing if you know something I don’t know I sure would love to learn it from you.👍🏼👍🏼😁🎸
Very helpful, thanks!
Buy a Taylor made in Mexico 😊
good luck :)
You're welcome, Stuart. Glad you liked this one, thanks! :) -Jared
Great chord chart - really useful thanks!
Excellent lesson, I thank you very much
Your voice is so soothing
aw thanks! :)
Great lesson! Thank you very much for putting in the time to bring this to us.
My pleasure!
Thanks again
only 4 top finger picking styles...damnation since I know 10, I am truly blessed!! holy cow. Travis How long have you been picking? I have 70 years under my belt on guitar...and LEFTY besides!!!
