Hey Chaps! What do you think of the new M3 MacBook Pro's??
By "first review", do you mean the first review by ANYONE or simply by yourself, Thomas?
Missed opportunity to go with M3 Pro in one of those laptops. I'm eyeing one of these for future purchase but everyone is testing only the maxed-out specs
@@TheWorldTeacherHe is the first to review these products and give first look at benchmarks all the other RUclipsrs are just unboxing and showing that space black doesn’t give you any fingerprints 🙄
I tell you when my M3 Pro 14 arrives tomorrow.
they look great ; can't wait to see them for real in an Apple Store 😊
Thanks Tom for these amazing videos. Keep them coming. High quality from start to finish as always.
I'm still running on the M1 MacBook Air with 16GB of RAM and have yet to do anything on it that actually makes it slow down. Still by far the best laptop I have ever owned and love it!
Thx!
This was the video I was looking for!
So far the most informative review. Thank you for your work
Great to see the Silicon be back to kick as hard as the M1 did initially. M3 Jump was well worth the wait.
Timestamps please
Just a bummer the M3 Pro is such a flop. The M3 Max is the only one that had a significant jump and it costs $3999 to get the Full chip.
I will wait Mac Studio M3 max for $1999 (same price as M2 max studio) @@jjchockey
My m1 Max from 2021 has not yet given me any reason to upgrade! :) Crazy how much faster these ones are, but I've yet to come across something my m1 max can't do. Apple's really knocked it out of the park with all their silicon chips so far.
I think that’s the biggest issue for most people!
Incredible review! Excited to hear your thoughts and testing on the battery life! M3 Max is impressive!
OK this is the one I've been waiting for
That M3 Max chip is definitely a beast. Fortunately, since my computer budget could never handle it, I don't need that kind of power, my M1 Pro MBP 14 is doing the job nicely. Don't get me wrong though, I lust in my heart for that M3 Max 😁
Your M1 Pro is still a beast of a laptop chip, don’t let these shiny new chips fool you
@@Garrettdx1988 Agreed!

I’ve noticed some M1 MacBooks for sale, and I don’t think the sellers have considered that their top/high spec M1 Max machine can’t keep up with or is neck and neck with a lower spec, lower/same priced M3 machine.
Not for gaming and upgradability and repairability.
Super review. Just what I wanted to see.
The best review of M3 Max on the planet! Thanks! I would also love to see code compiling benchmarks (rather than showing two rendering benches, 1 render, 1 compiling would be much more diverse) Keep up the great work!
Awesome review thanks
Excelent review, you have tested a lot of stuff I actually wanted to know, and couldn't find anywhere else.
Just one question, regarding games tests:
When you say the M3 doesn't perform as well on games on Battery as while plugged to the wall, did you check if the battery was on Saving Power mode?
Awesome video, love the comparisons even with the Mac Studio.
I really want to see how this compares to laptops with Nvidia on battery and plugged in. As a 3D artist the lack of hardware ray tracing has been a deal breaker. And while I don't expect it to match Nvidia there is only so much of peformance delta before this would be a non starter for me.
nicely done Tom!
The temperature difference between the M2Max and M3Max is crazy given the performance increase.
Incredible how u finally got a chance to test their actual benchmarks! Thank you Tech Chap!
How is that incredible?
Anton!
Would love to see the temp difference between the base M3 Pro and the base M3 Max, both in the 14" chassis.
Also, SSD speeds at 512GB vs 1 TB or 1 TB vs 2 TB, however you can spec them. Previously, I think it was the 2 TB and higher SSDs that could do the advertised speeds (from the keynote).
🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️
Really thorough review of the metrics I will actually need to see. Cheers.
Tech chap delivers a masterpiece yet again!!
Thank you for this very good straight to the point video !! So delightful without all the bla-bla-bla on others videos !
Lucky winner 🏅
I agree with you on the M1 Max! Mine still performs great and works for what I need it for. I will probably only pull the trigger for a newer Mac when Apple switches to OLED panels and a facetime camera. Great first review though!
Great honest review, look forward to your buying guide, will be my first ever macbook pro or air, i dont need all that power of the M3 so maybe the M2 or maybe wait for the new air when it comes out hopefully in summer next year. The Asus Zenbook oled 14 also looks good
Unreal video. Nicely nicely done. That's Christmas sorted.
Cheers!
Hi Chap, I would like to know any overheat problem on 14" Max MacBook 14"?
Thank you! Would be great to have a comparison to the PC's with a 4090 for us in 3D wanting to switch. :)
Hi Tom, I mostly use my MacBook for Logic Pro and music production, usually hundreds of tracks in a project. Would love to know how the M3 competes with the M2 in that regard in your buying guide!
Great review as usual 🎉
Interesting M3 Max performance. ❤
The keyboard "grease stains" have only gotten worse over the years. There's various reddit threads as well as supporting articles talking about this issue, and it's suspected that overtime, Apple has cheaped-out on key caps. They're not also necessarily oil because cleaning the keys with isopropyl alcohol does note remove the "grease stains". It's essentially the keys losing their cheap coating.
I saw a tons of videos from the new M3 series, because I have a MBP M1 MAX, and I would like to upgrade it to a M3 MAX. So this video with tests are the best ... far-far the best. Thank you!
Which is best for graphic designers the Mac Studio or the iMac 24inch? I m coming from the 2017 27inch iMac with upgraded ram.
I have a Macbook Air M2 and no issues with grease on the keyboard, I assume its the same quality and color right?
I still use the macbook pro 15 inch 2013 should i upgrade to this one or should i take a look at the m1/m2?
Really appreciate the on battery gaming performance test! Lots of people complaining about gaming laptops battery life being only 1-1.5 hours away from the charger. Looks like it's unavoidable!
I was checking the new MBP at the local store show floor yesterday, the ones with M3 and M3 Pro chips and one thing struck me immediately - the sharp slots which are cut alongside the bottom edge of the body on each side. I am not sure they were at the previous gen, but they look like a potential dust suckers. Might be interesting to look into it more. I can also confirm that space black is a fingerprint magnet - I believe the units were on the floor for few days max, and only space black was all over stained with prints.
People are grimy in general, I don't trust a store unit compared to my own use (I never got cheeto/chip dust on any of my devices since I was a kid, that should be common sense. I also hate Cheetos)
What version of Blender are you using? The latest 4.1 build has included support for the hardware ray tracing of Apple Silicon
I'm pretty impressed with the M3 Max laptop! I do use a mix of 3D apps and video editing apps. I am planning on getting an M3 Max, since I still have a 2017 intel Macbook air but I only use it for media and notetaking since I can't really work on it, I've been working on my Windows laptop past few years. I really want to take advantage of the battery power and extra power from M3 Max chip.
For some reason I thought the 40 core wasn't available on the 14" anyway curious to see how it handles thermals relative to the same spec 16"
Using the 2019 touchbar macbook right now and it is heating pretty fast is the m3 the same?
How does the 14 core M3 max compares to the M3 16 core one ?
Many thanks - any chance you can compare fusion 360 cad? Thanks
Is it worth it to upgrade from m1 air 256 to m3 pro 526 if my goal is to use for office work and use the mini led to watch movie and maybe gaming?
Do you have any tests of the M3 pro running Parallels?
what I am most shocked by is how much the performance in gaming drops when you unplug them. Is this also the case for non-game programs, e.g. blender etc?
if I come from a M1 Pro do you recommend to upgrade for a M3 MAX?
For some 3d softwares such as blender, ue5 etc is too soon to get a complete result since hardware raytracing, mesh shading and dynamic caching aren't optimized yet. Blender will add MetalRT to take advantage of the m3 ray tracing (finally), and so (hopefully) other 3d softwares.
Mac programs actually don’t need to optimize for Metal RT to utilize the RT cores, it is all handled by Apple themself on the API level, the application just need to have ray tracing to use the RT hardware acceleration, so the blender results is accurate measurement of the RT performance.
Wonder about gaming performance unplugged if you set it to high power?
Would a Hi-spec 16" M3 Max be capable of easily running Lightroom + a studio display + a 4K 32" display? Thinking of buying the laptop over a studio.
I got my mackbook pro in 2018. Is it worth the upgrade?
Still pretty happy with my M1 Max MBP. But hopefully when it comes time to upgrade the space gray color will be back. Not a huge fan of this space black option.
Thanks, Tom, for the great comparison video!..However, will wait for the M3 Ultra Mac Studio to be released in June 2024...
It would be great to see a comparison of the 14 core vs 16 core M3 Max, I can't seen to find any!
Pls do a full review of the new Lenovo yoga pro 9i. I already saw it in ur previous video with a bunch of other laptops .
As a professional wedding photographer I cannot see that much difference in upgrading from my 16inch M1 Max. It still does everything I need it too perfectly. I think I will leave it till 2025 and then change. Great work as always Tom and appreciate what you do.
As a photographer even an air with 16gb would suffice. It’s video where these chips shine. I do wedding videography and edit with my 8gb M1 Air and even that is doing it surprisingly well.
Timestamps please
I do batch editing of 100's GB of photos for massive timelapses and then rendering them into a video. I ordered the M3 Max... I'm expecting massive time savings.
@@dinocrest1946 hey do you edit in 4K or 1080P (Full HD) or even 1440P (2K) I fancy trying to make cooking videos and gaming videos a bit. Thanks
If you edit any videos it’s will make a huge difference.
wonder if the macbook pro 14 with the lesser max throttles less. 2 cores less and 10 gpu cores less
Great review and thorough! Thank you. I'm looking forward to your M3 Pro review. Coming from an Intel 2017 MBP that I cannot upgrade to the latest operating system anymore. Sonoma is a no go for my Mac :( I am an artist and use Photoshop a lot and wondering if it's better to go with a M3 Pro or an M3 Max?
M3 pro if you’re on a budget m3 max if u want to do top tier photoshop and rendering
Thank you. @@mardogaming1999
Think im gonna wait for the M3 Air versions. Hopefully they got them in space black as well.
I dont want em to update the studio display yet tho lol just picked up 2 for a new set up… and i dont wanna have to change again lmao
One more thing: There are plenty of games on Mac. I have about 1700 games total on my Steam wishlist, and of those about 500 are on Mac (you can show which are on Mac in the Wishlist options). Most of them either Very or Overwhelmingly Positive rated. Tonnes of brilliant indie titles and a bunch of bigger ones too.
Can you confirm and test if the M3 Max HDMI 2.1 if it now supports bypass passthrough of DolbyTrue HD, Dolby Atmos and DTS X using HDMI2.1 cable from M3 to an AVR receiver. All of the reviews in YT are the same. Can someone make a review on the ports limits. Thanks
Would be great for 3D artists to test a Maya scene with Arnold render engine since it now supports Apple silicon natively.
Real time raytracing in gaming engines is very common for rendering used in the film industry, building industry, design industry. Getting the feature on macs is a big deal for professionals and not just gamers
Nested Virtualization support?
The new generations of ARM based chipsets (Apple and Windows) are brilliant! It's great to see this jump in performance and efficiency!
Hey! How does Baldurs Gate 3 run? Thanks.
Why in some of the tests the multi core result in M3 max 14 is faster than the M3 max 16?
Hello.. Maybe a question. Do you plan on making a comparison video with for example the ASUS Zenbook Pro 14 Oled vs the New Macbook 14 Pro M3 max? I think those are the 2 laptops that I was looking at but I can´t decide what is better.
Lucky winner 🏅
MY max arrives tomorrow. Pretty excited, I skipped the M2 and have been struggling along with an m1 air (desktop M1 Max studio). My workloads are containers so im going to see a giant boost, getting to parity or better with my desktop!
Mac Studio is cheaper than MBP 16 and the same price as MBP 14 when you try to match M3 Max with 96 RAM since you can't get 64GB and that's assuming you accept the binned M3 Max chip. It is impressive that it is so close to the M2 Ultra, but M3 Max and M3 Ultra in the Studio will swing the value proposition back into the Studio's favor handily. Assuming the $1999 price holds, the base M3 Max Mac Studio will be a beast next summer.
i have an old 2012 macbook with the apple logo light😂 as well as a mac mini. what new macbook pro should i purchase??😅😅 HELPPP
It looks like the M3 Studio Max and Studio Ultra will be killer!

Thanks to this video I just bought one. $4k down but I love it. 16" 48GB 1TB M3 Max
Please compare stable diffusion image generation with drawthings app. please?
That's very impressive. However, I am staying on my current mobile powerhouse of M2 MAX MacBook Pro 16-inch. It's ridiculously fast. Great job Apple, and great job Tom.
Does it run boot camp for windows 10. 11?
I couldnt care less about artificial benchmarks. However, the info about battery, temps etc. is useful. But really interesting would be real life comparisons: Can you fluently scrub through 4K 4:2:2 footage when adding luts, how much faster is working with RAW fotos, how many instrument tracks can be run in parallel in Logic Pro, what about multitasking various apps…
Pretty decent difference in skin tones on the webcam comparison
Great video and overview! Thanks. Ordered the 14" M3 Max. Curious how Canon 8K RAW plays back. Always been a tough codec to work with.
How's the thermal throttling on m3 max 14 inch. Thinking of the 128 gb 14 inch myself.
@scottw6960 or @psysword any problems with the 14" ? I'm thinkg about get one, instead of the 16".
@@psysword did you bought the 14 ? it is ok ?
@@marcellopcamara I love mine, it does well especially with Final Cut Pro and Davinci.
@The Tech Chap
I bought the 16 M2 Max 32GB like 4-5 months ago and I got a bit upset that customers didn’t now that this one was going to release.
I really want that AV1 decode engine and 16 M3 Max seems much much more faster on paper?
Should I regret?
I’m a pro user but not a super pro pro
That sucks but you still have a great machine regardless.
I’d be miffed for sure but by some quirk of fate I’m on a win this time.
16/40 128gb/4TB on the way to my door.
I’d love to see something like this done with the base m3 14” that doesn’t have an actual pro chip compared to the base M2 or M1 14” MacBook pros.
Thank you so much for this!

@@ncard00 you are asking the wrong person. I don’t do time stamps for some one else’s video… perhaps you are asking in the wrong place
Yes! I wanna see this too
Great review. Disappointing to see that GPU performance is lowered when unplugged. I thought Apple Silicon wasn't meant to do that. Disappointing as I had hoped to occasionally fire up the odd casual game while watching the kids. Have a 16" Max CTO model on the way.
Mac Studio - more encode/decode streams
You're all in for the race dude... Both on engines as on cores 🤘👍
Thank you for being the first reviewer to actually do more than just inbox it and talk about fingerprints 🙄. All these RUclipsrs got it and didn’t show any performance testing. Smh
Hope it helped!
@@Thetechchap i disagree. The only thing you should have spoken about is the finish and perhaps the display (which hasn't actually
Changed). These super high end models are for a tiny part of the market. Should have waited until you could review more realistic skus. But then Apple chose to send out only these silly models to their chosen reviewers.

Still got that lovely Notch 😂😂
1:10 - 1:50 Exactly what should be happening in every area of tech.
HI what are you doing with these laptops after review them, what if you will sold one of them, of course with the less price if it is possible

every bit of information I was looking was in this video except the battery performance difference between 14 and 16 max, something I wish I new before making a buying decision, how much battery time I'll be loosing on 14 on load and on normal tasks :(
Has anyone benchmarked the 16 inch m3 max base (binned)? Wondering how the m3 max variants compare…
I probably don’t need this sort of power but as I buy with the intent of making the machines last a decade (my MBP is a mid-2012), I will go for the M3 Max with higher RAM but use a separate drive instead of paying for more TB onboard. Fortunately, I have been saving for this rainy day for a long time and my mid-2012 really can’t cope anymore (Ivy Lake GPU score of 46 on Blender!) so I just have to gulp and pay up.
My m1 pro still working smooth. But I envy the new black!
Only apple could sell us dark grey and call it black 😂
I would like to see a size comparison with MacBook Air M2 please. I have the impression the M3 14 inch laptop is way bulkier and hence way less practical when bus travel etc. is concerned. It is sold as a replacement while a proper replacement for the 13 inch M2 doesn't seem to exist.
I just got the fanless M2 macbook air 15 inch and have not yet managed make it break a sweat, even with small games run through rosetta emulation…
Mind you, I switched from a 16 inch i7 macbook pro, which was overheating all the time
Will the cheap looking notch ever go away? They get rid of one annoying thing (touch bar) and introduce a new one?
Love the black ❤

I'm having a hard time deciding between a refurbished MacBook Pro with
M2 Max, 12‑Core CPU, 38‑Core GPU, 16 Core Neural Engine, 2TB SSD, and 64 GB Ram for 4.300€ and a newer
M3 Max, 14‑Core CPU, 30‑Core GPU, 16‑Core Neural Engine, 2TB SSD, and 36 GB Ram for 4.700€.
What is the better deal here? 🤔
I want to see more testing gaming on battery performance for more games vs being plugged in. If it consistently loses massive performance I think I will go back to laptop pc for gaming. Im assuming this would affect all workflows not just gaming but video editing as well and other creative workflows.
unplugged and plugged-in performance is the same on these Macbooks.
The media engine chips not the cpu or GPU take care of most photo and video editing rendering encoding with few exceptions thus also reduces heat and battery drain.
Gaming on the other hand really stresses the GPU and cpu and memory raising heat and power usage across the board even macs.
.would be nice to see some technology chips other than ray tracing that could truly enhance gaming the same way
@@Just_a_random_birbnot with games.
