I really want to see how this compares to laptops with Nvidia on battery and plugged in. As a 3D artist the lack of hardware ray tracing has been a deal breaker. And while I don't expect it to match Nvidia there is only so much of peformance delta before this would be a non starter for me.

The keyboard "grease stains" have only gotten worse over the years. There's various reddit threads as well as supporting articles talking about this issue, and it's suspected that overtime, Apple has cheaped-out on key caps. They're not also necessarily oil because cleaning the keys with isopropyl alcohol does note remove the "grease stains". It's essentially the keys losing their cheap coating.

I was checking the new MBP at the local store show floor yesterday, the ones with M3 and M3 Pro chips and one thing struck me immediately - the sharp slots which are cut alongside the bottom edge of the body on each side. I am not sure they were at the previous gen, but they look like a potential dust suckers. Might be interesting to look into it more. I can also confirm that space black is a fingerprint magnet - I believe the units were on the floor for few days max, and only space black was all over stained with prints.

For some 3d softwares such as blender, ue5 etc is too soon to get a complete result since hardware raytracing, mesh shading and dynamic caching aren't optimized yet. Blender will add MetalRT to take advantage of the m3 ray tracing (finally), and so (hopefully) other 3d softwares.

    • @dpptd30
      @dpptd30 8 месяцев назад

Mac programs actually don’t need to optimize for Metal RT to utilize the RT cores, it is all handled by Apple themself on the API level, the application just need to have ray tracing to use the RT hardware acceleration, so the blender results is accurate measurement of the RT performance.

Mac Studio is cheaper than MBP 16 and the same price as MBP 14 when you try to match M3 Max with 96 RAM since you can't get 64GB and that's assuming you accept the binned M3 Max chip. It is impressive that it is so close to the M2 Ultra, but M3 Max and M3 Ultra in the Studio will swing the value proposition back into the Studio's favor handily. Assuming the $1999 price holds, the base M3 Max Mac Studio will be a beast next summer.

Great review. Disappointing to see that GPU performance is lowered when unplugged. I thought Apple Silicon wasn't meant to do that. Disappointing as I had hoped to occasionally fire up the odd casual game while watching the kids. Have a 16" Max CTO model on the way.

@@Thetechchap i disagree. The only thing you should have spoken about is the finish and perhaps the display (which hasn't actually
Changed). These super high end models are for a tiny part of the market. Should have waited until you could review more realistic skus. But then Apple chose to send out only these silly models to their chosen reviewers.

Has anyone benchmarked the 16 inch m3 max base (binned)? Wondering how the m3 max variants compare…

I probably don’t need this sort of power but as I buy with the intent of making the machines last a decade (my MBP is a mid-2012), I will go for the M3 Max with higher RAM but use a separate drive instead of paying for more TB onboard. Fortunately, I have been saving for this rainy day for a long time and my mid-2012 really can’t cope anymore (Ivy Lake GPU score of 46 on Blender!) so I just have to gulp and pay up.

I would like to see a size comparison with MacBook Air M2 please. I have the impression the M3 14 inch laptop is way bulkier and hence way less practical when bus travel etc. is concerned. It is sold as a replacement while a proper replacement for the 13 inch M2 doesn't seem to exist.

I just got the fanless M2 macbook air 15 inch and have not yet managed make it break a sweat, even with small games run through rosetta emulation…
Mind you, I switched from a 16 inch i7 macbook pro, which was overheating all the time

I'm having a hard time deciding between a refurbished MacBook Pro with
M2 Max, 12‑Core CPU, 38‑Core GPU, 16 Core Neural Engine, 2TB SSD, and 64 GB Ram for 4.300€ and a newer
    M3 Max, 14‑Core CPU, 30‑Core GPU, 16‑Core Neural Engine, 2TB SSD, and 36 GB Ram for 4.700€.
What is the better deal here? 🤔

I want to see more testing gaming on battery performance for more games vs being plugged in. If it consistently loses massive performance I think I will go back to laptop pc for gaming. Im assuming this would affect all workflows not just gaming but video editing as well and other creative workflows.

The media engine chips not the cpu or GPU take care of most photo and video editing rendering encoding with few exceptions thus also reduces heat and battery drain.
Gaming on the other hand really stresses the GPU and cpu and memory raising heat and power usage across the board even macs.
.would be nice to see some technology chips other than ray tracing that could truly enhance gaming the same way
