    The way I see it, Night City is the main character in the show. Season 1 is a complete arc, but I'd love to see more seasons - New crew, new circumstances, but with Night City being the recurring element. In the game, you can choose between a 'Street Kid', 'Nomad' and 'Corpo' origin story for your character - So it'd be great to see those other two paths explored in a season 2 and 3. A corpo story to show how the corporate life is just as nasty as street life, but prettier, and a nomad story for more of an outsider perspective on everything (and some crazy car action scenes).

      Yeah, this is the perfect way to do multiple seasons, and still keep it very fresh. Night City is definitely a large enough canvas to have multiple stories arcs like this contained within it.

      Bro finally someone else gets it. But its one step further Night City isnt just a main character it is the main antagonist of the whole of the Cyberpunk Universe TTRPG Game and now this brilliant show. Being the culmination of un-restrained capitalism and control. Everyone plays with the idea of leaving but everyone is always drawn back in by either the idea of there dreams being obtained or obligation, and ultimately leading to their deaths because you dont become a legend in night city by living but by how you die.

    I remember getting the very first Cyberpunk game in the early 90s. The franchise that eventually evolved into this anime started off as a TTRRPG inspired by the first wave of cyberpunk fiction, and was set in the far-flung future year of 2013, lol. The world of Edgerunners feels organic and lived in mostly because of the huge community of authors, artists, fans, and players who immersed themselves in it for decades and contributed to it over the years.

    • @ThatGuyKazz
      @ThatGuyKazz 2 года назад +4

      @@RoroReviewsStuff Agree but I think it would have been better if they approached it from David's cyberware addiction. Like he states his goal was to make sure lucy could go to the moon at the end of the show but he could have done that without pushing himself to cyberpychosis so I feel like they really should have leaned into his cyberware addiction more. Maybe at least hint at it before Lucy learns about the cyber skeleton and tries to hide it from David because she really doesn't have a reason to do that at the point in the story when she does other than the fact that David thinks he's special. IMO it would have been better if David had already been showing signs of cyberware addiction and a borderline obsession with getting better and better cyberware cuz it really doesn't do that until after the scene where Lucy gets the information. The way the story is presented the whole thing could have been avoided if Lucy told David that Arasaka want's to use him as a lab rat and was honest about what she was doing when she was tracking down people who knew about that plan and had back up while she was doing it. But if they set up more justification for Lucy hiding it from David the story would make more sense.

    I was shocked and so pleasantly (?) surprised at how satisfying the ending managed to be. A lot of the reason it hit so hard for me is bc we rarely get well-made modern tragedy. The ending is sad, for sure, but it's cathartic, not depressing. It's a safe sorrow the way that horror movies are a safe terror. Too often stories go for tragedy and end up in motiveless grimdark which can get exhausting. This felt rounded out and significant and worthwhile despite (and I'd even say, because of) how tragic it was, not truncated for shock value. Heartwrenching but also complete and meaningful. Pretty masterful imo.
    I'm gonna try and find a quote, I'll put it here if I do
    I once heard a lecture where someone said that the great appeal of tragedy is to see terrible things happen to people you're supposed to empathize with and see yourself in, and that the catharsis comes from seeing someone's life go horribly wrong and still have the author hold your hand and tell you 'this story mattered. even though it had a sad ending it still mattered. even if you don't succeed your attempts matter.' Grimdark tells you that the world sucks and nothing you do matters, well-written tragedy tells you that sometimes the world sucks but everything you do matters so so much, your story is still worth telling even if you never achieve that happy ending or if you lose it along the way. People have inherent value and their stories deserve to be told no matter if they turn out okay or not and in a reality that has no concept of 'fair' that shit just hits good man!!! feels good!!!!! it's COMFORTING (

      Big yes, I think what you mentioned is actually way more reason for why this amine hits so well, not the usual "character development, plot, etc.".
      It was always clear where the story would end and maybe the viewer just wished for a proper "journey". The fact you don't see much of a romance between them would usually make the relationship less interesting to the viewer, but somehow here its the other way around. The whole enfolding of their storyline was heartwrenching, because we knew what we wanted to see and what they wanted to do, but Night City didn't let them.

    My theory is Adam smasher and David is same, Adam smasher said he was "special as well" so if u look back at the series, every team deaths is show that their body blow apart like maine..rebeca..pilar..Dorio..kiwi but unlike David they just didn't show his head getting pop. I think he will become like Adam smasher cuz he even said that he was surprise that David handle that long, in season 2 in my own theory and expectation will happen is. Lucy will indeed comeback but before that I think she will be ready with a crew, and try to receive a data that which David is still alive or not, if did that David is alive he will be like adam smasher and Lucy will try to bring back David back as a normal and young David unlike becoming a "Adam smasher" just do what as he told. Both of them deserve better Lucy being with David in the moon and David Achieve the promise of his mother getting in the top of arasaka tower. They live in cyberpunk yr 2076 maybe somewhere in that few yrs in the future but I don't know how will affect the game but maybe they invented a "thing" that can like past the consciousness into a fully cyborg body but lets just hope they would make a season 2 where Lucy and David are together in the moon.. or at least made a prequal to this where "If" nothing goes wrong. They used so many cliches it surprised me. But since the story was written with characters flushed out and each had mini arcs with a show direction that MADE SENSE. This made it a great show and one that will be relavent for a long time. Its not surprising in this day of show anchored off of politcal agendas that a regular show with writing that focused on entertainment, while having cliched character roles, was amazing. Take note Holllywood/Disney/Amazon.

  • @OfficialDJSoru

    Only one issue about the description of the cyberpsychosis description. Higher quality parts themselves aren't supposed to be as impactful in the lore itself due to optimization. The oldest cyberware according to the TTRPG lorebooks had WAY MORE chances of inducing cyberpsychosis then the ones being sold in 2077 through legal outlets (read as, something ripperdocs might not actually have in stock for the commoners visiting them).
    The Sandevistan itself is a military grade cyberware, not meant for the public. Quality isn't much of a factor here since soldiers implanted with them would either have heavy regulation or be pumped full of drugs to keep their body and sanity in check (might intentionally or not have a parallel reference for the heavy drug use by US troops in the Vietnam War to cope with the PTSD inducing situations or for performance enhancement like keeping awake in night watch shifts, both heavily documented cases)

    To be perfectly clear i have yet to rewatch the anime, but my first thought as soon as Ive seen David with the Sandevistan, using it as if it was just a toy, I knew he will end badly and as soon as he started to see himself as special, it confirmed my suspicion.
    Even though he had very high affinity, letting him use cyberware more, he was still just another kid from the streets, everyone knew that, even we as watchers did, but he was purely oblivious to that fact.
    One of the scenes that utterly broke me, was when Rebecca tried talking to him in the chase scene at the end, her voice broken when she realised David was almost all gone mistaking her for his Mother and her just going with it.
    But in the end as the song goes, he didnt lose his self control, didnt became the murderous machine he was supposed to.

    The wonderful thing about the show and the genre is that there's no real singular villain that needs to die for the world to be saved. Society has been molded into a money-making machine at the cost of everyone and everything - it's a consequence instead of malice. The elite 0.1% may reap the rewards, but they live with a target on their back. The rest of the world fights over the scraps, and the planet struggles to support... well, anything.
    The main villain of Cyberpunk 2077 is the city itself - it's a prison to all inside. And the only way Lucy is able to escape is by David buying her ticket out with his life, figuratively and literally.
    She managed to fulfill a dream in a city that crushes them - but by then it cost the one thing she didn't want to give, so The City took it.

That being said Edge Runners is it’s own story, its own characters. It can stand alone but is enhanced so much more when you play the game. When you can go to the same locations and see the same vistas. The game and the anime just complement each other so well that both get enhanced by it.

    No it isnt. Its great, definetly on par with Bebop (including the cheap 'out of left field' ending, lol) and one of the "better" (read BEST) gore psycho-thriller anime's as of late. But it has its flaws.
    1) Its held together by the usual thin seams that create suspension in anime: Lack of character communication, ommiting common sense for plot effects, bending the source material to the max so things can happen.
    2) As someone here said, it uses both 2077 lore and original TTRPG lore. The problem occurs when the old lore does not match the new lore anymore. 75 years in game and 40 years irl is a long time.
    3) The dissonance in cyberpsychosis depiction in game and in anime (someone else also pointing those out here). Now there is treatment for it. New implants cause less stress on the body. Etc. Etc. If you read Regina's messages, not knowing any of it previously, something suddenly just won't add up anyway.
    3) And 2 leads to 3. 3 leads to 4. Saka changed in that time. Its still the same souless grinder, but Saburo is now total control freak. Their aproach isn't grill your implants ask later anymore. (except when future of the company is at stake, and even that has consequences. Right Mr. jenkins?).
    What im getting at? Ending. "Smasher falls, everyone died." Its bland, cheap end of session gimmic from the TTRPG era, with bad after taste on top.
    First of all Saburo would never let Smasher anywhere near any of his billion dollar projects, if he would ever let him out of whatever 3rd world hellhole he kept him to already die, such a level of control freak he is in 2070's. Secondly corpo V scoff's when talking with el Capitano about a "half of David's fanclub being Saka's C-I", which means they knew his every move and would feel odd to not get him to parley even if it failed and he would need to be zeroed anyway.
    3+) Before someone accuse me i want happy ending, or Cyberpunk is not about happy endings... Peppe Najarro, Kerry Eurodine. Del. V. And other characters you granted or have the choice to grant some form of happy ending/closure.
    But thats not it. Just out of my head i can come up with 2 maybe tragic endings, that are more challenging than "Smasher falls, everyone died"...

    • @RoroReviewsStuff
      @RoroReviewsStuff  2 года назад

      I'll be honest, I know nothing about cyberpunk aside from this anime, so I really didn't have any problems with it since I had no clue about a lot of the criticisms you brought up, In terms of the lack of character communication at least, since that's one of the only things I can actually comment on, I usually hate the miscommunication trope that comes up in a lot of anime, but I actually didn't mind it that much here. Lucy had a genuinely good reason to not tell David about the cyberskeleton, and David has an adequate reason to resent Lucy for this decision, as she essentially abandoned him in the process of trying to save him. And I also think that the ending is a bit more complex than "everybody dies, the end" since it concludes with David's character arc perfectly resolved and with Lucy's safety assured, to me, Adam Smasher was just a colorful and interesting vehicle to get us to that great ending so I didn't mind his sudden intrusion into the story since it made enough sense to me. I'm sorry I'm unable to speak to your criticisms anymore as I haven't consumed any other cyberpunk media, but can I understand at least some of your points.

As a proper Urobutcher finale in Cyberpunk setting: Raising the hopes up when, everything goes wrong because of the borg sMasHeR who looses his temper, as usual (see he can be useful). And Blackhand zeroes David in the end. Properly, no loose end theories. Then delivers the ticket.. Two Tickets! And some memento to Lucy. Then Falco or some Saka goon can ask if the mission is a success, and he answers that it was a failure. In front of Lucy.
      Later Falco informs broken Lucy that Rebecca went missing in a place that now looks like a warzone while on chase after Smasher. Que final sequence.
      An actual mindfaq of hope adds a flare. I think that is what i miss in there

    While no prior knowledge of the game is needed to appreciate the anime, you honestly miss out on half the detail if you haven't played the game. On every single episode, I had a entire novel of detail to share with more friends about it because of things I learned from the game.
    Like, there are thing that just drive me mad. Like on the scene where Lucy and David watched a brain dance together and someone went "oh, they're just watching vr." Trust me, a BD is quite a bit more than a VR. If you played the game, you know how crazy a BD, a dude literally wanted to get crucified in the game like Jesus did so he could record the pain, the emotion, etc.. so that he should share it to other so they can experience the same thing. It is fucking wild. For someone to call it Just a VR does it such a disservice..
    And that's just one of the details.. I have a lot more to say haha

      Yeh I've been hearing more and more interesting details from people who have actually played the game unlike me, and it seems like the team behind the show really put in a lot of stuff for the fans of the game, which is especially impressive considering that even with all of those details, the show is still understandable to a newcomer like me

    "I appreciate a show that doesn't talk down to their audience."
    That's one of my very few complaints about Ghost in the Shell. To watch what are high class government agents talk to each other as if they don't understand the current political climate, or what different agencies do. If I saw two FBI agents trying to explain the surface level nature of the CIA to each other, and who the vice president is, I'd seriously question if they're qualified for their jobs, lol...
    I understand why a complex political drama would require such exposition. But it still feels wonky. When I was younger I never noticed it, but rewatching the shows makes me wonder why it's so dumbed down sometimes.

  • @MrZlocktar

    It's just "good" and that's it. Very small chrono, story plot is a generic from zero to hero quest. That's not masterpiece. If you are looking for actual masterpiece - you need to watch Ghost in the shell once. After that you won't hype generic anime anymore. And at least you will know how masterpiece suppose to look like.

    • @RoroReviewsStuff
      @RoroReviewsStuff  2 года назад

      I've been planning to check out ghost in the shell for a while so I'll get back to you on that, but idk man this show was more than just "good" to me. It had some of the most visually stunning direction and animation I've seen in ages, and It's ending is flat out amazing. Also can't most stories be boiled down to the "zero to hero" format if you really think about it? That's just a staple of the hero's journey plot structure, the protagonist has to overcome some challenge to reach his goals. And I would hazard to say that this goes beyond that format cause David doesn't even really end up as a hero in the end, he just accomplishes his own goals and doesn't really end up as a hero to anyone aside from those close to him. Either way I can debate this for hours, but I'm sorry if the story didn't resonate with you as much as it did for me, and I'm sorry if calling it a masterpiece offended you in any way, I just stated what I felt about the series and that's that.

      @@RoroReviewsStuff I understand your excitement, i really do. Still, take your time and watch Ghost in the shell 1995 and after that 2004. It is really something special. The whole cyberpunk genre as we know it today started from this manga dated by 80s, which you don't even need to read anymore thanks to 1995 film. Bladerunner, Matrix, were all based on ideas and concepts from this manga. This story is not about zero to hero. It's.. more deep, more intimate. I doubt it will resonate with you as much as Edgerunners because it's more down to earth, less edgy, and more of a arthouse, but it will give you idea what cyberpunk as a genre and will make you think about human society evolution in future. Also the animation is just on a whole different level. They just don't make those anymore.

    I’m still so surprised how much people are into this incredible mediocre anime. Not that it’s bad. It’s genuinely pretty. But the actual story is really not that great. The actual animation is cheap.
    I’m surprised if anyone that wasn’t into the games was actually into this as a stand-alone thing.
    Don’t get me wrong. On the scale of good to bad. I’d like to think it sits on the good side. But honestly, I just don’t think it’s great. Good, sure. Just nothing more then that.
