A good and timely video Dave! I'm planning on going "under the skin" of my own 736 since it's been a while and this video's a great refresher course. One thing I do with a strip-down of an engine is remove the front and rear trucks, getting them out of the way makes things a little easier, for me anyway. Nothing else I can add, you covered it all. Thanks. I’d say I take off the front and rear trucks half the time, really depends on the engine NA day mood. Sometimes I can’t be bothered with one more screw! Haha

Very nice. So much easier than a 2026 and its siblings, where you have to disconnect the side rods, pistons and a dowel pin to remove the body. The cylinder assembly is a separate casting. It is much easier with the pistons, or cylinders, cast as a one piece frame, as on your 2036.
This is a very well designed engine. Also user friendly to rebuild and clean. These old Lionel engines are easy to locate parts when required. It seems Lionel and the aftermarket have stepped up making parts available and affordable. Makes one wonder if the modern stuff today will have the same senerial in the future.

Ok guys. Working on a 2055 that didn't work. Fixed everything. New smoke unit guts. Only smoked a little. Running on 6 volts without loco body. Aha. Put body on and added 7 rolling stock. Now pulling 10 volts. Smokes great. Duh🎉
Nice job. It's always worth the trouble to take them all apart and clean them real good. Looks like Nick was running that engine with all the smoke fluid residue! Just kidding, just kidding!
Sure does. I do believe all the 736s had Magnetraction. The 726 did not, and if there was a 726r or 736r from during the Korean War, those would also not have it.
The Best Lionel Engine Ever Made! Mine unfortunately has part of the window slits broke off. I only had to repair the motor once and it’s been running since then. It’s almost like it could just keep going forever without any problems.

As always Dave, another fine video. I would like to know where to get an LED such as the one you installed (I never liked the shine of the old bulbs shining through the seam myself). I have the same engine and I would like to do the LED modification like you did. Thanks!
Thank you. There are probably many options, but I used a soft white 3mm led from evemodel, purchased on Amazon. You can search for model train led and it should come up. It looks so much better like this!
Hi Dave, Thank you for the video. I recently acquired a 1950 Berkshire 736. I have taken it apart, it was filthy. On your video, at the 5:45 mark you talk about the contact and isolator with spacers. My isolator,is broken in half at the gold conductor and I did not see any spacers in there. Can these parts be purchased? Thank you for all you do with the hobby!

Great video -- now you've got me contemplating upgrading my small but noble fleet of Berks to LEDs. That LED looks really great on your 736 -- a question - exactly what LED did you use? (voltage/color) etc. There are so many to choose from!
Hi Dave, Im working on a 736. The motor shaft will not come out. I dont want to yank it too hard but i am putting some force into it. There seems to be like a copper or brass bearing getting stuck on the worm gear when try to pull it out. Yoy can see if from the worm gear side but it seems to slide toward the back. Please help. I cant figure this one out.
The motor does run fine but it wiggles left and right a bit. The engine will not reverse either. Im not sure if it ever did. The engine is 50 years older than me.
I wish I had a solution for you. I’ve had a motor that wouldn’t come apart and I just over oiled it to clean it out. I would assume there is a worn bushing or something like that, but I don’t know enough to say.
@@dagryffynhobby all I did was oil it well and grease up the worm gear. I did notice when i tried to run the engine in reverse the worm gear moved slightly to the left side of the train, so I am assuming that the bearings are worn out it like you said. I guess ill just run the train forward only it until it breaks. Thank you.

Found one with the motor shaft moving, the C clip wasn't where it should be and was missing two of its thrust washers.

Don’t recall specifically, they are meant for up to 19v I think. I just bought what was cheap on Amazon.

Say, on rewatching this video. I've seen videos that said they had a scale 2-8-4. Is the one you have a 0 scale scale model?
The 736 was not a scale model. It is a larger engine but not scale.
There are plenty of 2-8-4s in more modern times that are scale

I used a evemodel led from Amazon. You can search led for model trains and they should come up.

This engine was designed to use smoke pellets NOT liquid smoke- as you found out:)
Designed for, yes, but either can really be used
Nah- liquid gums up- as you found out. Stay with the pellets- like Lionel intended.
