"Hey" is astonishing, just momentous. Scratch beneath the surface and this seemingly normal song is writhing with complicated shit. A masterpiece. And one of the most important bands in modern music.
"My reading of the song is that it is told from the point of view of a mentally unstable man who is sexually obsessed with a woman. (This is a VERY common theme in Pixies songs!) He refers to his obsession with sex and possibly patronising prostitutes (‘Hey, must be a devil between us or whores in my head/Whores at my door, whores in my bed’) and his feeling that he and the lady are inextricably linked (‘If you go, I will surely die. We're chained….’) Things then get wierd, with a section that sounds like a child or a developmentally disabled person describing sex (‘Uh, said the man to the lady/ Uh, said the lady to the man she adored…’) and then gets disturbing with the whined and then shrieked line: (‘Uh, is the sound that the mother makes when the baby breaks’) before returning to the ‘chained’ refrain."...Sven something....

That's cause your parents were listening to bon Jovi and motley cru. The pixies were mostly big in England. That's why they were signed to an English label. Same with nirvana and hendrix. Both were big in the uk a long time before usa heard of them. The American music scene is far too cringe

It's almost an insult to them to say they could stand their ground in today's wonderful music scene. What I will say though is that none of the above mentioned artists (sic) would have made the smallest wave in 1988.
What a woman Kim was (is), and what a band - at the peak of their powers, in one of the best-sounding venues there is here in England (the T&C), imo anyway, and so much better sounding, and with bucket loads more atmosphere than all the O2's, or Wembley's or Glastonbury etc. There's just something special about that place. I'm sure a lot of artists must choose it just to record a live album. But what my teenage self would have given for Kim (despite her husband I guess). Between her and Edie Brickell I was one lovesick little puppy alright. What I'd give to be 16/17 again, and to hear them for the first time again.
This is a perfect line up for me,,, with an original one and only woman member (Kim).. I really want the way she backed up as second voice of the original vocalist.. Two thumbs up

kim learned playing guitar when young and took the job with the newly forming Pixies after an ad was placed with a local rag looking for a bass player. she hadn't played bass before but learned to play after she took the gig.
Black Francis wrote the song - Kim the lyrics ... funny thing is Francis always seems to premeditatedly play the song ´disrespectfully`, not giving two shits as he plays it ... like he can´t handle others writing songs too, either that or the lyrical content of the song is not much to his liking , lol .
