  • Front panel is on. RF PA is installed. Balanced Modulator problem fixed (?). Rig is on the air with about 3 watts, working lots of DX.
But there is an annoying amount of carrier that is still getting through. It is only about .5 watts with sidebands of 100 watts PEP, but it annoys me, and it makes the setting of the carrier frequency in relation to the filter passband very critical: If I set the carrier a bit too far from the passband I get improved carrier rejection (from the filter), but I also lose the lows in both received and transmitted signals -- the RX just doesn't sound as good. I see the in both of the 15-10 rigs (IF of 25 MHz). There is less of it in the 17-12 meter rig (IF of 21.4 MHZ), and none of it in the Mythbuster (75-20 meters) (IF of 5.2 MHz). I am now wondering if this might be a consequence of my using a very high (25 MHz) single conversion IF in the 15-10 rigs. What do you folks think?

Hey Bill. Love the videos and podcasts. I have a question for you. Do you or any of your other genius friends know of someone who makes a really good sounding CW keyer? Some sound really terrible with very clicky attacks which I end up hearing more than the tone. Surely you could convince someone like Moog to make a really nice sounding keyer with adjustable oscillator and ADSR etc? It doesn't feel right using a $200+ paddle through a $2 keyer. Any thoughts?
All the best to you and yours,
    Thanks for your time

Patrick: I rarely use CW, and when I do it is with a straight key, so I am really the wrong guy to ask. But maybe someone here can make a recommendation. 73 Bill

What about Varicap diodes and a large value Multi-Turn pot to give a nice wide tuning capability.

I've found that varicaps can actually be less stable than ordinary variable capacitors. Besides, I have the needed variable capacitor.

what about using 3x12AX7 vacuum tubes as a Cross Coupled Double Balanced Mixer which should work as a modulator with gain and should work as a demodulator again with gain with a B+ of 50V and a Heater voltage of 12V, if you want a look then here it is Angelfire/Double Balanced Mixer using vacuum tubes

Well, this is a solid state project.
