Blessed Solstice and Happy New Year! I challenged (tortured?) myself with crafts this year: Modge podged a few layers of glitter tissue paper onto various glass jars with hand strung beads and bobbles (great way to use up left over materials from other crafts) with battery operated, color changing LED candles inside the jars for my close friends. For 30 people holding various positions at my company, I macromayed little ornaments with glistening, bright white nylon twine which does NOT hold knots well, but I bought it, so I kept at it. They turned out pretty good despite lots of cursing along the way - the true holiday spirit, yes? It was an intersting change of gifting pace, but next year it's back to cookies, muffins, mini cakes, and/or a confection or two.

Merry Yule! 🌟 🔥 🎄 ❄️ 🍊 My family thanks Copper & Wax Co. (local Nebraska backyard bee biz) for the local beeswax candles and stovetop simmer to bring light and spicy sweetness to the longest, darkest (and very frigid) night of the year! We sat in utter darkness, saying a blessing before lighting the candles at our table and enjoying dinner together. For the feast: lamb shanks, baby golden potatoes with butter and cheese, and brussel sprouts. For dessert, a Gingerbread Orange Yule Wheel Bundt Cake with “sugar snow” and fresh oranges on top. We anointed our first Yule log for the new hearth with essential oils, each one of us picking our favorite: Christmas wreath(pine), apple cider, ginger bread, and cranberry. The kindling was from our Halloween/Samhain cinnamon broom, some pine needles, sticks from our new backyard, and a fine cut of lamb as offering. The ashes and char from the Yule log will be preserved to dress next year’s log. It’s said that with each year the next log has a memory of the year before… the Yule log burns bright and hot throughout the night, keeping us warm until the sun’s return. The stovetop simmer in our wood burning stove kettle not only keeps the air humidity up and fills the air with festive scents… (cinnamon, orange slices, star anise, bay leaf, lavender, and more…) it’s said that the spices and herbs ward off evil spirits on the longest, darkest night of the year. We finally decorated our new Christmas/Yule tree! Listening to holiday songs and enjoying mugs of vin chaud/wassail (hot mulled wine) together. Yum! The winter solstice reminds us that we are the light in the dark, that the sun is returning to warm the earth with the renewal of spring as the cycle begins again; it is always darkest before the dawn; to appreciate the cold and the dark for it gives meaning to and appreciation for the cozy warmth and light. 🕯 Solstice Blessings! 🌟

In Wales the Welsh for father Christmas is Siôn Cořn, which roughly translates to winter spirit or old man Christmas for a more modern description, the word is so old that it is used to describe the modern day father Christmas, just goes to show how old these traditions actually are and are still celebrated today! This evening (solstice), I’m all set to make the traditional German glühwein recipe you shared in the past. I even have the rock sugar! All three of my children will be home as well as my husband (a rarity). I’ve also made a vegan yule log cake. We’ll make dried-orange ornaments to accompany little boxes of Anna’s orange cookies we’ll pass out to neighbors. I have been inspired by your videos. So my Capricorn daughter will be 15 on December 27 and I say listen clean your room or Santa won’t bring you presents 🎁 and she said you know Santa can’t bring me presents unless I approve 😂and I said ok Santa won’t give you money or gift cards and she said mom REALLY I caught you wrapping gifts like four years ago when you screamed at me to get out 🙄 and so I said look you’re parental units won’t give this year as much unless you clean your room.
