  • We're back following another Euros heartbreak for England, with Gareth Southgate's side falling short against a fantastic Spain team in Berlin. What are the main problems holding this England side back? And does someone new need to come in for them to be fixed?
We take a look at another game in which Harry Kane and Kyle Walker looked well below their best, with Bellingham, Saka and Shaw the standouts for the Three Lions. And with Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams combining for the opener, are Spain leading the way for a new era of international football?
And finally, we discuss possible replacements for Gareth Southgate. Who would be more suited to the role out of Eddie Howe or Graham Potter? Could Mauricio Pochettino be an option? Or will the FA recruit from within, with under-21s boss Lee Carsley also up for consideration after winning last year's European Championship!

Eddie Howe is the guy if we can get him. Potter I wouldn't be mad at. Both of them are 10 times the tactician of Southgate. Our style of play didn't work for any of the group stage or last 16 and was only changed due to suspension. 3 at the back was better but our attack wasn't functional at all the whole tournament and our pressing game was abysmal. Both Howe and Potter make big improvements there

Southgate has came closer than any other English manager in recent time. However, it must be admitted he has got incredibly lucky with the level of opposition throughout these last 4 tournaments and if England had appointed a better man there likely would be a trophy cabinet ‘to bring home’. This entire tournament we have had basically 0 attack on the left hand side, even when playing in a 4-2-3-1 and with Foden playing as the left he was constantly taking up the space in the center next to Jude, Southgate should have had the guts to drop foden, the rest of the team suffered just so he could get Kane, Jude, Saka and Foden all in the same side, meanwhile Watkins had a fantastic season and barely played, Gordon had a fantastic season and was the U21 player of the tournament and is used to working in a pressing system under Howe was given 6-7 minutes across 7 games, especially with his pace, Saka proved running at teams and putting them on the back foot worked, so why didn't we try adding that to the left side? Yeah you can say certain players didn't turn up, but this was the managers tactics, even Warton had a great second half of the season didn't get minutes. As for the Rb situation, logically Trent is our best replacement, especially with his passing range, but if we dont have any runners, no point having Trent in the side of the passes are just going to be Sideways and Backwards

If you have nobody in your front line who is quick and makes runs in behind off of the ball, your opposition can push their defensive line up high, suffocating the space in the midfield. That's why everyone could press us. It's not the players fault. Kane, Bellingham, Foden... they all want the ball to feet. It's that simple. You don't need to be a genius manager to figure that out.
Kane dropping off the front line is a good thing, if he has a Son or Sane or Rashford type who is there to run in behind for Kane and others to find with a through ball. Bellingham and Foden don't do that.

Palmer should of started ahead of foden or Bellingham (even if only from the 3rd or 4th game onward) and that's a fact!
Imagine Saka, Palmer, Gordon playing behind Watkins
Frightening the potential of that attack
At least compared to the utter tross we were subjected to
I personally feel tho the players are just as much to blame as Southgate, if not more tbh, he kept faith and they let him down

This should be a lesson to England:
    1. There's more to football outside the PL. In the last few years many have overlooked, undermined and underestimated other nations only because the other players don't play in the PL.
    2. Jude Bellingham is undeniably good, yet nowhere near as the media have made him out to be (some have compared him to Zidane...), neither is Foden nor Rice.
    3. Kyle Walker has built his career around being fast and winning duels against dribblers, but he's absolutely awful positionally. If Trent had that performance there would be a witch hunt.
    4. Gareth Southgate wouldn't get a job in the PL, he's a Championship-level manager. Never seen a team that just equalised and had all the momentum be so negative. It's true that you don't have to play great to win a KO tournament, but at least show ambition.
    5. Stop with the "It's coming home" nonsense.

Southgate didn't beat a single team in a knockout game who we weren't favourites to beat pre game. Never. Not one. Saying he's got to finals etc sounds great without context.
He did however, lose to teams we were favourites to beat, and we lost those games because of his tactics. Croatia beat us with tactics. Italy, we were 1-0 up in a final at Wembley and still didn't manage to win it. He has categorically underachieved as England manager.

Was he off the pace a bit? Sure. Was and is he still the best no 9 in the world? Yes. To watch Southgate tell him to literally just stand in the box and do nothing was pathetic. Give England an Ange or a more proactive manager like that and watch what happens

Noone is questioning his credentials. But listing off shit hes done in the past has no relevance to his current performaces, which have been poor.
He can drop deep if he wants, but if thats the case he needs to find the energy to make runs into the box (which he isnt) to take advantage of the cutbacks that are being put into the box e.g. saka vs switzerland. His hold up play after the group stages was mediorce at best, and his pressing was lacking in intensity.

Some managers are good at rebuilding squad unity and in that regard Southgate has outdone most of his predecessors. The Clubs they play for don’t matter as much as the national team badge. So kudos to him for that. However, tactically he can only get you so far. He’s like Ole in that sense. Great man manager and motivator but that doesn’t win finals. You need to be better tactically and he just isn’t up there in that regard.

Spain was the favorite for the final. But before the tournament and looking at each position side by side England has to be the better team. Yes Williams and Yamal played an amazing tournament. But Foden and Saka on paper have to be better. If one coach gets the best out of each player (Cucurella being way up there) and the other is just not able to implement Bayerns top striker it shows how big the disadvantage on the bench is, compared to Spain, Germany or even Argentina.

Not saying that all of England's players are better than Spain's or vice versa, but technically the Spanish players looked far superior. English players typically faster and stronger, but technical ability and IQ its Spain all day. English players are a bit overhyped because of the popularity of the EPL and inflated transfer fees for their homegrown.

Pochettino has proved at every club that he has zero tactics, so how is it any different than Southgate? Secondly, almost every press conference for Spurs and Chelsea ended with "was that lost in translation, or did he really say that?", he barely speaks coherent English, and in a team where English will be the only spoken language in training and games, I think it will be a mess.
