THANK YOU! I found mites in my collection 3 days before this video posted. It was meant to be. Really a refresher with some added information because it was your last video on mites that finally helped me get rid of them last time when nothing else worked.
That is awesome to hear. I have a few more videos, but my hope is that this video with a higher production quality touches on some of the other elements that I missed in some of the previous videos, also reorganizing the information into a more simple fashion.
Hotshot is something I keep hanging around my snake racks. It works wonders. The reptile spray is literally magic, lol sorcery 🤣🤣🤣 another awesome video brother
What’s the best way to maintain the temperature of the water over time? A heat pad? If so, what barrier do you put between the tank so it doesn’t burn the snake?
You could put a heat pad with a thermostat. my whole room is about 78 to 80° so I don’t really need to worry about that, but if you have a cooler room, you should be able to set the heat pad to the temperature you want and that should keep the water where it needs to be
Best video I’ve seen about this topic. My new curly tails came with a sort of mites. They aren’t black but red and under all the scales of the male. I’ve heard chigger are hormone dependent so maybe that’s why the females don’t have them that I can see? If I pull one off the male they don’t move but they do squish. I had them in a bioactive before I noticed them. I took the enclosure apart and cleaned it, didn’t notice a single one in the process. I’m a decently experienced keeper/breeder and I’m kinda stumped on this one so I started the normal treatment process while waiting for the vet. Just hoping I’ve kept them away enough from the rest of my collection. I inspected every(sanitized and changed shirts between each one) I didn’t find any, anywhere else. Does anyone know if chiggers will live between scales of lizards and how harmful are they compared to snake mites?
Thank you! I’ve personally never seen chiggers in the reptile cages, but if you treat like this video says, it should still work on almost anything that could be in there.
I had the exact experience you were talking about where you find a mite but it's not a reptile mite. Turned out to most likely be a soil mite from my bioactive substrate and I never saw another one after that.
You have to break the life cycle of the parasite. They eggs hatch apparently 2-3 days after being laid. The eggs are laid every 4-8 days. Fleas are easier to get rid of, than mites. (And before someone assumes, I'm not talking about treating snakes for fleas. I'm talking about getting rid of them from your home.) They have a 2 week life cycle. You treat, then repeat in 2 weeks. Bad infestations need to treat every two weeks, for 2-4 treatments.
I promise his methods work!! How do I know? One of my recent purchases did bring mites to my collection. Now i follow new snake protocol and treated my collection.
Yes it will. That’s why I recommend treating with the reptile spray for direct results and the mite strip to get the ones that travel. I would just take the whole strip and put in the room.
Jason as far as the pest strips, will it do anything to mites that don't come into physical contact with it?? What are your thoughts about cutting into pieces "in" the enclosure?? That scares the hell out of me.
I just worry about the hot shot because it says not to use in places where people are there more than 4 hours a day. We live alongside our animals so its probably not an option.
Yes, it’s not great if you are living in the same room or spending a lot of time in the same room. The reptile spray is super effective and I have found it to be the best stuff on the market. Granted, I haven’t had mites in years, it’s definitely something I struggle with at times over 30 years of keeping.
I think that only applies to small confined spaces without good air circulation/ventilation. I have some snakes in my living room and put a hotshot out a couple of months ago. Me, my fur babies, and scale babies are all fine.
Had mites a year ago, treated them and things were mostly fine, but now they wre back some how around the same time, September to November. I only own thr one snake so idk how they even got here
HELP PLEASE! Will the spray kill my isopods and springtails? Why treat the bedding just to throw it away? I found some mite looking things on one of my BP's yesterday. They were tiny. I remembered this video. I don't think they popped... They were so small I'm not sure I would have felt them pop. Even identifying the color was hard but I'd say black, not brown.
I should’ve clarified when I said, popping, that they will leave a red stain when you squish them. That is the blood from the animal. If there was no red stain, then they are probably not reptile mites. To answer your first question of if it will kill the other things you have in the enclosure, it is possible. I am not 100% sure myself, But most of the products that will eradicate mites, also work the same on other insects
@JasonsExoticReptiles thank you! You said to treat the bedding and then throw it out. Why treat the bedding just to throw it out? Did I misunderand? I've got isopods and springtails in my snake enclosures. I'm trying to find an alternative that makes them survive. I ordered some nematodes yesterday and the spray. Gonna try the nematodes on the substrates first. What do you think 🤔
im glad i stopped intaking animals during summer time when mites are ramped up lol. However i do want some female brazilian rainbows, if you had any for sale?
Mites definitely seem to be a problem this time of year since all the imports are starting to come in. I have some on the website at the moment and some T- albino BRBs that just came out today!
I'm not sure why you say they don't live in the wild in North Carolina because we have a subtropical climate here and yes they do lol I myself have rehabbed black rat snakes that were collected covered in mites. I also had a situation where I dug up some ground cover plants and foolishly put it in one of the enclosures to see how it would look without first washing it off and that tank ended up with mites. They may not have originated here, but they're here now. But yeah, almost all of the time, it comes from the damn reptile expo lol
5 years of keeping snakes and I just ran into my first issue with mites. Discovered mites on my boa this morning. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching. Just stay consistent with it and they will be gone in no time

Thank you so much bro. I always appreciate it!
I think the most important takeaway here is to never stop thinking about mites and their path to your collection. Thanks for the reminder.
100%!!
@@JasonsExoticReptilesdo the no-pest strips work with monitor lizards?
Great video, I've gone through this process a couple times. I always follow Jason's steps, I haven't had an issue with mites yet.
Thanks man! I always appreciate the trust!
Another’s great video! Good information and video quality
Thank you!
@@JasonsExoticReptilesare no-pest strips ok to use on monitor lizards?
@@NumbDiggerlmao should be find for all reptiles. Just not for any type of insect and potentially amphibians
Mites have to be the greatest fear of reptile keepers.

Im in the continuous battle but i also have tarantulas by my snakes that are infested and theyre all in my room
How often do you soak a snake in dawn dish soap with an active mite problem? Every 2-3 days for 1 hour?

If you went to a pet store, reptile show or somewhere else where there could have been reptile mites, they probably hitched a ride on you.
Cool ,,,,, wonderful n deed '
Thank you!!
What about water temp? How do I make sure water doesn’t get to cold while in there for 24hrs
My room is about 80 degrees, but you could keep it temp using a heat pad with a thermostat.

I guess you are correct. Anywhere with a subtropical climate is fair game for them.
