Whether she won or not … a nomination is honor enough… considering she stole the WHOLE MOVIE… role of a lifetime… but John and Annette and Stephen - boy did they bring it! Incredible talents all around…
"The Grifters" is an underrrated masterpiece. Frears is genius here, counting on brilliant performances by Huston, Bening and Cusack. It's a perfect noir made in 1990.
It's one of my favorite movies ever. Hard to believe John Cusack was 21 here. That plus naked Anette Benning, who was great. Still, she was a seriously hot beast.
He fell down an elevator shaft in 1960, broke his skull, arm and shattered his ribs while losing a finger. Pat Hingle was a great guy but he knew darkness well.
Holy Underwear, Batman ! What a quiet air of menace the character of Bobo Justus generates....one of the late great character actor Pat Hingle's finest moments on film ! What an incredibly powerful scene from one powerful movie ! THANKS for uploading !!
What's so scary about Hingle as Bobo is that he's giving her a chance to correct the situation. He's all business, he knows Lily steals but she makes him money. The whole scene is that she is stealing TOO MUCH and he wants to remind her that she has a gig as long as she doesn't get too greedy. That's all it is too, a chance...one he suspects Lily won't take. But Lily has no options, no resume, no "square" life...she's fucked.
Sadly this cuts off the next part of the scene, where Bobo and Lily are making pleasantries as he shows her out, as if they're best friends. It makes the savage scene beforehand it all the more shocking.
This was the first time I saw Pat Hingle as a villain. As Bobo, he was nothing but a vile, despicable sadist who enjoyed torturing people. Sickening but probably real.
A read somewhere that this scene was written more violent and that she does get beat up badly. Also that it was filmed but that scene didn’t make the cut. I wonder if any of that is true.
@@denisenoe7927 this was made a few years before cgi smoke. In my opinion, the cigar is real when he is smoking but becomes obviously fake when he's "burning" her hand. You can tell by the cherry, not exactly sure how to explain it but it's just fake looking, color is off and it doesn't have the details you see in real lit cigars.
Something about the way that Pat Hingle is so blase makes it really strange. Almost like he's a WC Fields type or a villain ont the old Batman TV show.
When I joined Black Ops back in the 1990s they used this on me. I laughed and asked if they'd ever seen this movie. They're not alive today. I am. 😁😁😁😁😁 It's why I hate misogynists and torturers.
Anjelica Huston deserves to win the Oscar for this performance.
Kathy Bates deserved more I guess… that’s why Anjelica didn’t win
She was unlucky enough to be up against Kathy Bates (Misery). Tough odds to beat.
I agree, should have been a tie between her and Bates

Its really hard to truly act scared... no really seem like youre in fear. Her acting is amazing.
Lily shit herself. That's why she was wearing Bobo's trenchcoat. The white dress was ruined.
She wasn't afraid to die there. She was afraid of the brutality and pain.

Honest to Christ, Pat Hingle's performance in this single scene makes him one of the most terrifying villains I've ever seen -- he's almost TOO good!
He fell down an elevator shaft in 1960, broke his skull, arm and shattered his ribs while losing a finger. Pat Hingle was a great guy but he knew darkness well.
It takes a good man to understand a villain like that.
Pat Hingle was a great actor, and he played the sociopath perfectly here.
He did Bobo Justus well

Check out the blank look on his face after he hits Lilly -- nothing but a day's work for the guy. Scary as hell.

Meh, another normal day at the office for him.

Yep
i like how Bobo Justus' henchmen are always shorter than he is. They look like teenagers standing next to Anjelica Huston.
"You never shit right again." Pat Hingle is the very definition of "mean old son of a bitch" in this scene.
Pat Hingle emanates from every pore the same terrifying quiet menace of Robert Mitchum in Cape Fear.
Houston still got off light here. If only he knew what she was doing with his money. No one could forget this scene.
Poor Lily was a fool to think she could pull the wool over Bobo's eyes...or polyester for that matter !
Very light
THIS SCENE HAS LIVED ME FOR YEARS....NEVER STEAL OR YOU GONNA GET IT.
So the money in the trunk she was stealing?
But why didn't he hit her with the oranges? He just lifts them up, she collapses, and he dumps them out.

She stole from him ...she wasn't exactly innocent
@@kdohertygizburSo you're saying she deserved to be abused like that? Beaten and burned with a cigar?
If so, you've got real problems.

I’ve seen that version
@@deerheart87 where?
#Power Confidential brought me here. HILARIOUS
Me too! Lol
Definitely 2nd place after Kathy Bates at the Oscars that yr 💯
It’s a penlight in a cigar casing. Still a great scene, though.
How can you tell?
@@denisenoe7927 poor cgi smoke and probably back stage prop experience

It was a "mercy" to burn her hand, instead.
