They're not going to be in a relationship whilst Carter is suffering the repression he is so there is no 'toxic relationship' to speak of. The entire point is that Carter has been abused in such a way that he can't cope with coming out and being in a relationship at the minute - it will probably end with him being forcibly outed as gay and practising conversion therapy, losing everything and attempting suicide as a result. He'll have no support and won't be able to cope with it mentally.
Carter’s been smothered and suffocated by his father for years and as he’s said - he can’t just shake that off… he needs patience and intense therapy but a firm hand as well to stop what he’s doing - it’s a form of abuse!
