  • This is a video I've been wanting to do for a while now, because these discs were more than just a compilation of game demos, but they were an actual experience! PC Gamer magazine really took the time to make each one special and an experience. Plus...Coconut Monkey!!

    These demos were incredible. Here in Brazil, besides magazines with game demo discs, we used to have magazines with heavy metal demo discs. They had about 16 tracks each one from a different band and was so useful especially because the MP3 format was still in the beginning.

      Hundreds!
      But seriously, a 4 MB SNES ROM took over 20 minutes to download at 3 kb/s if it wasn’t interrupted so a 650 MB CD represented DAYS of downloading.

    • @nhh12345
      @nhh12345 5 лет назад +1

      @Timothy Vreeland I was going to do that too, but I read about capacitor issues on those. I picked up a couple eMacs, but they both had bad capacitors too. Long story short, I found a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver and it has none of those issues. I recommend going with a PowerMac G4 of some kind, because they have all solid capacitors and they can still run OS9.2. Just verify that it's compatible with OS9, since some later G4 models might not be.

      I used to love getting ZX Spectrum Demo cassettes off of Speccy Mags, sometimes you got free FULL games that were previously commercially released. Then I got a Megadrive, £40 for a Cartridge and NO DEMOS(could hire games from the local video rental store though(£2.50 a night, back by 6:30pm the next day)) Then when I got my Playstation, I would buy PSX magazine JUST for the DEMO DISC. Don't think I ever read the magazines. Got a few various PC Demo disks, when they had like 100's of MS-DOS games on them. I did read the captions under the screenshots in Your Spectrum/Sinclair though, since they were usually humorous.

    I remember in 1995 having a rocking 9600 baud modem, running Windows 3.1, and getting onto the world wide web. I went to ESPN and after waiting several minutes for it to load, I was shocked - I have not only scores and stats, but also they had a link to a video. WOW! So I hit download on the video and wait... and wait... I waited literally 45 minutes, then finally, it played, a glorious 15 second NASCAR video clip that was maybe 1/10th the size of my screen - and remember, that's 1995, meaning how it would probably be the size of a finger nail. 45 mins to watch a 15 second clip that was in terrible quality - oh, and no multitasking, that was just letting it download the clip and doing nothing else as you couldn't run a browser and do anything else the PC couldn't handle it. Not to worry however I'm sure hipsters will soon move on from records and discover dial up, then they'll setup dial up internet services so you can relive the entire era again.

My first PC Gamer demo disc was the one that included a demo of Exhumed (Power Slave in the USA I believe) and I got absolutely obsessed with that game. Great video, Demo discs were a huge part of my gameplay experience growing up. My family was going trough some rough times, so for a couple of years instead of buying full games i would use the little money i had to get magazines with demo discs that as you showed sometimes included compilations of older fullgames for free. If it wasn't for them maybe i would had been forced to drop gaming as a hobby altogether, so i remember them fondly.

    Great video, MJR! These disks are super nostalgic, even though the mid-90s don't seem that far away! Time passes way too quickly. My favourite 90s disk was from PC Format (I think) when they gave away a Star Wars Making Magic CD in 1996. The video was grainy but I was so excited because it featured the scene where Han met Jabba below the Falcon and Jabba was just that Irish actor dude! I'd never seen this and back then it seemed really special as I'd only ever read about it. It's easy to forget how things like this achieved legendary status in your head when you couldn't just go out and google it!

I used to live down in Uruguay/south-america and a few times I got the chance to get my hands on some of these cds. Of course down there it was easier to go to some illegal shops that existed back then, and purchase a cd full of games you would select from a catalog. One funny thing was that they "measured" the price they charged you for each game by the amount of 3,5 inch floppies the game fitted into. Great memories!!

    After I graduated HS in 1996 I had a subscription to this mag and needed the discs for the same reason you describe. My 28.8k modem could not handle downloading the content you needed to play a decent demo of a game. I loved these demo discs! They pointed me in the right direction countless times...

    This takes me back. You're right, for $5+ you not only got the magazine but a much MUCH more valuable cd that just seemed OVERLOADED with cool stuff. I really miss those days when it was all so new and adventurous. I remember when I first tried Thief demo. I was obsessed.

    I would have LOVED to have these kinds of discs in the 90s - the fact that it's set up as a game & you have to explore to find the demos would have blown me away as a kid. Cool to find out that these existed.

    Ahhhhh the nostalgia! Those PC gamer and EGM mags were the cornerstone of my childhoods. The demo discs were everything.

    Dial up was a pain in the arse, but really only in retrospect. It served it's purpose at the time. I used to love playing Quake 3 Arena & Unreal Tournament online in the UK but then America got broadband before we did & we couldn't compete anymore. Demo discs were definitely a godsend though. Dial up as far as downloading was concerned as far as I recall you'd be looking at 2-3 hours for a single mp3 by your chosen band & if your internet dropped during that download, you'd have to start again. Great video man 👍

    good vid, ive collected a few hundred pc gamer demo disks from ebay.. lots of unique content on them, some special quake 2 mods (like coconut monkey) and half life maps really stand out.. there was also lots of cool freeware/shareware games that are practically unknown today
