My uncle used to ride out daily to check his cows. He had over a mile of land . He would be gone for days just hanging out with the cows. My aunt hated the fact he stayed gone for so long. Now that I'm older and in a relationship...I get it
Just like ole Jeremiah Johnson riding tru the mountains with his gun and horse for comfort and getting the needs of the day. Thanks OVER ON THE WILD SIDE for sharing your home, animals, time and adventures. Good riding and stay safe ole friend. 🎥💪🏽💪🏽💯👍
I recently picked up a karosene lantern since i love camping and trying out gear. I also found out from swedwoods channel that if you leave it extinguished of course, but about 50 feet from your camp the mice are attracted to the smell of karosene and stay away while you sleep.
There ain't no glory in the west, unless you're watching over on the wild side. That man has the ability to make a 5 minute video feel like a quality 5 star steak.
You are a man unafraid to make mistakes... I love that. And you do cool stuff. I had a horse in San Diego I planned to ride across the country when my navy enlistment expired. After months of training and getting a kit ready the horse went blind. I was devistated and had to put him down... I didnt want to do that again on short notice do I went back to college instead. I still dream of that dream and wish id gone ahead with a fresh horse.... you are soooo cool, dude.
OK, I have questions. First of all, how are you toting those chickens to camp and where do you get them to roost? Very interesting videos there. Keep them coming and watch yir top knot! 😁
Really enjoy your videos. Your spirit is grand my friend! I just bought a $980 external frame backpack. Can't say I've ever road a horse. I've looked into pack goats a bit. I'd want to train one up slowly to get really strong. I threw 50 pounds in the external frame pack and did 1.5 miles on foot rested 2 days then another 1.7. The goal is 100 pounds 10 miles a day. If I had a pack goats he could take half that weight for me perhaps. In the future when I've got all my equipment I'm looking for someone who is down to do a 30 day survival trip. I'm gonna be packing a Diana 48 .22 pellet gun and a small fishing net and collapsible pole for game. I need to learn the edibles. I figured 50 pounds of that 100 pounds will be dried food for the first run try to hunt as much as possible small game. Then attempt a second run all foraging and hunting when confident with skill set. Posting this comment 3 xs I hope you see it. 👍 If you'd ever consider a 30 day challenge let me know old soul.
That sounds awesome, I’m glad to hear it! I think goats are a great way to go. You may be able to find one for sale, otherwise I think they take three years to develop until they can really be packed with. I think you could also lighten your gear load. On the other hand, it’s nice that food weight gets lighter day by day.
35 pounds for backpacking is pretty good, I’d be interested in hearing some of your specific thoughts if you care to share. I’m all about learning not trying to be “the guy who knows”.
@@OverOnTheWildSide oh im just getting into "primitive" camping and backpacking so learning alot myself I love the outdoors and do alot of "overland style" camping and off roading, but im learning to go with less, so ive been working on whittling down my pack load and going more old school. Ill drive my 4x4 to a remote area, park it and pack from there to find a nice camp spot. wool blanket, canvas tarp, no modern fuel stove, boiling water instead of using filters. watching your videos has shown me that I need alot less than i think i do! I end up carrying alot of layers of clothing due to the climate( rockie mountains) going from hot to cold frequently.
That sounds awesome, what do you think about the tarp? I’ve often figured if I wasn’t doing historical stuff I’d buy one of these modern tarps that are lighter but strong. I’ve also figured I’d use a modern sleeping bag since they’re so much lighter than blankets. Which I do use for motorcycle trips…
I’m wearing my 1873 with a 7 1/2” barrel on this trip because I was kinda going for a later era on this one since I got the holster. Also since it’s more reliable for self defense.
I know its a old video but how big is your tarp like mesurements iam planning on making a tent like the one you have for a larp game set in the old west
Mine’s 8x7. I wanted it plenty long to cover my feet and head and wide enough to sleep on and double over me. Or if setting it up as a shelter basically same needs- pass my feet and head and plenty to reach the ground and up and over my head while sitting up.
You can find Sunforger canvas sold by the yard online and have an upholstery shop sew it up for you. Or you might find some extra wide material on Etsy. They have some 96” wide linen that I want for instance. Then only the edges needs to be stitched up.
Over the past year I’ve been watching, it seems like a common problem is your oil spilling. You should try bringing lard instead, or better yet some bear grease once you get a bear
Yes, absolutely! I do hope to switch to tallow this year. Hopefully bear, if not I’ll buy a pig and butcher it. It’ll also eliminate needing to spend money on something.
I realize it ain’t western but how about a Billy can instead of the cup and coffee pot? Maybe not practical but it was the first thing that crossed my mind. 🤷♂️
@@larrylee4919I’ve read that the mountain men carried something like that. I’ve considered it but they don’t usually have lids when I see them for sale.
@@OverOnTheWildSide I’ve bought brand new paint cans, with lid, at our Menards home center. Just burn off the coating inside. Or just a #10 can of vegetables in the bulk aisle and add a bail to it. BTW I like the alcohol stoves. I’ve got one genuine Trangia, actually made in Sweden not china and Lixoma Chinese copy. But I’ve made my own by coiling cardboard inside of a small sliced mushroom can or Dawn’s mushroom steak sauce or tuna can and that works very well. Sorry for TMI.
I also forgot dog food, I had a linen bag with dog food in it.

@@OverOnTheWildSide he was a very lucky man. Things are different these days . Wish time travel was a thing . I know I'd use it
I would for sure! Best we can do is make the best of the time we have here.

That means a lot, I certainly will!
Don’t be confused, this is from my first ride out with Bo three weeks ago. Also before I did more reduction of weight.

Nice video Richard, and really enjoyed seeing you enjoy yourself on the trip. Love the minimal gear aspect too!
Thanks Peter, I’m glad to hear that and yeah, I’m pleased with how minimal I’ve been able to go.

That’s interesting… I’d like to find an oil lamp eventually. Kerosene is nice since it’s so readily available.
@@OverOnTheWildSide i got mine at a flea market for 10$ used, then seen same thing at Walmart for 8$ but I'm still happy with the purchase.

I recently learned something. That pillow case with a slit in the middle is called a Market Wallet. It was used just how you are using it.

Thanks, I’ve been thinking of getting back to them this next year.
Do you think you will do any gold panning? You can buy plain steel ones like they had back in the day.
Eventually I would like to. I also want to get the correct style of shovel for that. Maybe next spring I can try it.
