Dewayne, I'm a viewer from Mexico and just discovered your channel a few days ago. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, know-how and the old ways which are so valuable and necessary for this world.
Always made me scratch my noggin when the Hollywood cowboys would ride out of town with a thin bedroll and itty bitty saddle bag, then magically in camp have a coffee pot, iron skillets, metal plates, mugs, a whole wagon’s worth of supplies. When they arrived in the next town a change of clothes which looked like they’d never left a closet/hanger.😁
I'm not a cowboy and I never plan to be, but this man is full of and blessed with great wisdom, and the ability to share it in a calm understandable way. I always look forward to a new video especially a "cigar video". Keep the great videos coming Mr. Dwayne
I admire the men who do it. You have to commit to it, 100%. Not something you can half-ass, unless you're really rich and can pay somebody to care for the animals. Then I suppose you could just mount up and have one of these guys running the show, and you just do what he says, until the snipe hunt.
This was the exact kind of video I've been looking for. Pretty much all the videos regarding canvas cutters aren't real review videos. Everyone just reads a script from the company, sprays it with the garden hose and tells you it's worth the money. After watching this video I'll be ordering one. Awesome video.
I know this is a little different but was reading “The Book of Camping & Woodcraft” by Horace Kephart this morning and ran by this fitting quote. As I am getting older and have went through some major medical shit including brain and spinal surgery from a line of duty injury, and then going from 600lbs to 200lbs now. “This matter of a good portable bed is the most serious problem in outfitting. A man can stand almost any hardship by day, and be none the worse for it, provided he gets a comfortable night’s rest; but without sound sleep he will soon go to pieces, no matter how gritty he may be.”
Man, I don't even ride horses, travel in the back country, I barely even go camping but I enjoy listening to the wisdom of Dewayne in all his videos. Reminds me of my dad, tough, straight to the point and a no BS kind of guy. Keep up the good work!
Howdy Dwayne name is Dillon I'm from Oklahoma just came across your channel and absolutely love your channel and the advice you and your wife give to the people watching. Thank you sir. Your like a dad or grandpa I never had for advice. 🙏
Very valuable information for anyone, cowboy or not. If you get up and fix yourself a $15 restraunt style breakfast , the last thing you're gonna want to do is work! In my construction days I learned to eat a light breakfast and lunch. Much of your information could apply to motorcycle touring as well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us. That knowledge could save someone's life. It could apply to emergency vehicle kits as well if you get stranded.
I'm getting In a habit of starting my day with one of your videos and a cup of coffee, I'm finding a lot more motivation to get things done lately. Thank you
Im new to the channel, watching in Colorado, ive watched I'll bet 30 videos in a few days. I don't even own horses but i do custom leather work on the side and have a close friend who raises mustangs and breaks and trains them and wants some tack repairs and builds, I also help with cattle drives yearly on a atv but rather be on a horse. So why not learn tack from a cowboy! I'm literally watching the bedding video right now, I elk hunt in back country in Colorado yearly and this Canvas Bed Roll is a game changer! My goal is to get horses again, had them in childhood, learn, come to the school and one day be able to pack a elk out! Dewayne your a broken mold my friend, not many like you anymore so it's refreshing to listen and learn from you even if someone doesn't own a horse, they going to hear something they need to hear, just like I did a week ago! Thank you for sharing yours and Mrs. Deanna life with us sir!
For those looking for options, I’m 55 and I’ve done many different types of camping. I used to work for the forest service and you would get a paper sleeping bag and that’s it to go sleep on the forest floor. At 18, I could make that work. Those days are long gone. My latest setup is a big Agnes “treated down” bag with a built in sleeve for an inflatable pad that slips into the bag underneath. Since it’s built in, you can’t roll off your pad at night while your sleeping. Treated down isn’t the same as regular down and can get wet to some degree. If you look at the kuiu brand hunting gear, many of their jackets use it. This is very high end stuff. I also have a sierra designs 3 person backpacking tent that takes minutes to erect but big Agnes makes great tents too. I find a three person tent, nice for one person as you have space for your gear inside. All my gear packs up very small as it’s intended for backpacking and I’m beginning to get into adventure riding on a motorcycle. The stuff I’m mentioning is the expensive route. I’ve gotta hand it to Dewayne “no padding” it and actually getting some sleep. That would be a handful of advil with my coffee if I did that. Like Dewayne said, there are many options. There are also some discount retailers like sierra trading post that can save you a ton. Hope this helps someone. Brotherhood of the Leaf.
That’s a nice set👌. Once you actually invest in the gear, it pays for itself.... a summer home you can live anywhere in that’s light weigh, money can’t buy much better things in life
Just found You my friend and I have been watching your channel for the past couple of hours you're a wonderful man and it calmes me down listening to you And I'm a brotherhood of the cigar I would be honored to have someone like you as I friend
🇺🇸🇵🇪🇵🇷😎 Wool, wool wool, sheets and an air mattress, way to go!!!Thanks for referming that I've done it right..Glad you had a good time with your son's! 🐴🐴🐎✨🎇
yeah; purpose is to "Be Out There". great summation. Never mule packed in; but in early teens , started packing a wool blanket, a old rubber gasket(from oil field) & saddle pad. I still have that wool blanket for these 50+ yrs. Great video tip! As always , enjoy & have safe trip back to Tennessee.
I’ve moved to hammocks, but used a bedroll for quite sometime. I respect the bedroll and it’s good sleeping but the convenience of a good hammock is great.
Best sleep ever car camping in the Sierras was a Thermorest down sleeping mat, a canvas Cabelas -10 degree bag , a cot, and inside a 6 person Kelty tent with my wife outfitted the same. Our English Cocker slept on her dog bed with a wool blanket pilfered from the Marine Corps atop her. I left that warm bed to make camp coffee in old school percolater. My son and my two small grandsons(ages 2 and 4) are good campers. My grandson said “ Grandpa lives living outside better than teaching school. “. A win.
Thank you for doing this video. Been waiting for it. Very informative. “Bear burrito” Good description of a sleeping bag. Safe travels for you and Momma back home.
A lot of this has to do with age…..when in the Marine Corps in my 20’s & 30’s I could sleep on a bed off nails and sleep sound…now in my late 40’s, it’s geared more towards this. Currently I sleep on a cot. Condition yourself…don’t get soft!
Love your channel. I have learned a lot. I'm about your age .....58. When I lived in Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and Idaho, I had a couple of sleeping bags and was on the ground. I had a duffle bag that weighed about 80 to 85 pounds that I carried with everything that I needed. I seen the back country and did what I liked and it was tough because I was a disabled vet. I can't imagine taking a bedroll like yours with me and the people I was with. Now that I'm older and have more issues, I would probably do what you're doing. It was tough but I can tell you when you're carrying everything in those 80 pounds are rough. I walked into bear country after hitchhiking with my pack and had one friend with me who also carried his pack and we didn't see another human being for 98 days until a ranger came upon us and told us about a rouge grizzly that had destroyed several livestock in the area where some sheepherders we're. We were about 8000 to 9000 feet above sea level where Utah Wyoming and Colorado come together. I'll always treasure that time but know I couldn't do that anymore. Unless SHTF I would do what I had to do to survive. Sorry about rambling Dewayne, just brought back a lot of memories from 1992. Take care and God bless. Your friend from Hopkinsville KY
LMBO...... I was at one time very comfortable with 75-80 pound pack/gear....... nowadays(I am 70) I have found 40-50 pounds is my comfort level......LOL..... ankles, knees, hips......LOL
Thanks Dewayne! You last comments were absolutely correct. I just came off a five day hunting trip in the back country for my vacation. You’re there to get away, not to eat a lot of food or relax with everyday comforts. It’s the experience, the solitude, memories, that is the reward.that a lot people never get. Thanks again for all you do! 👍🏼
I relate a lot to the bear burrito thing. I ended up buying a military surplus sleeping bag with the zipper on the top, right down the middle. it's a heavy duty, non snag zipper designed so that you can shove your arms through the face hole (it's a mummy bag) and simply spread them, and the zipper will fly open. You can get out of it in no time flat. Plus, it's good down to negative 15 F.
I keep a sheet with my wool blanket just because I know the difference it can make to increase the insulation properties. I can only imagine what effect adding a canvas top cover will do. Have never done that … yet. :)
This was particularly interesting to me due to the topic. Many decades ago I had custom bedrolls made for hunting trips. I designed them to be able to sleep in the snow on the ground. I never knew that you could buy anything like what you're showing. Thanks for the video.
Excellent video. Many moons ago when I was a young Infantry Soldier, I’d use my protective mask as my pillow. Not perfect but got the job done. Efficiency counts.
Great advice as always. I've done many baclpacking trips and several on horses. It's easy to get caught up in gear and forget why your going in the first place. The experience with friends and family are what makes the trip, some of my best memories. Thanks for the reminder.
Trying to apply things I've learned from backpacking, car camping, and horse camping to motorcycle camping. Wow, that bedroll sure won't fit on the back of my Harley! Saddle pads for bedding - what a great idea! I've been camping for most of my 62 years. But wow, I learned so much from this video! Thank you Dwayne!
That’s one thing that makes these outdoor hobbies rich, all of the skills and gear interact with each other. Mountain bikes got me into backpacking because I realized I had some stamina and some light clothes.
Good stuff..!! ✅ OH, I just looked up Canvas Manty on Amazon, and you was dead on, a 7’x8’ 15oz was $65, and the same size in 18oz was $75 dollars. This was on December 22nd 2022 and BTW, you have 382,000 subscribers now just 4.8 mount’s after posting this video… 😎👏👍👌🥳
I have been using a CanvasCutter bedroll for a couple or three years now I love it...everything they claim. I throw in back of truck and use it on trips out west hunting while driving....out hunting with overnight stay. So simple, weather proof, comfortable, etc.... Great product. Definitely a truck or pack item...too big and bulky to backpack. LOL
Davis Tent and Awning make an awesome real Cowboy bedroll. Put a 4” high density foam pad in it. I after my bedroll is rolled up, I wrap it in my mantee.
Great stuff, Dewayne. It’s the little details that make all the difference in most things & that’s certainly true when it comes to a comfortable nights rest
Very interesting- you are a wealth of knowledge Sir- simple yet practical and functional- great information- keep up the great work- enjoy your trip home
Great video Dewayne. This video made me curious about your truck. Flat bed looks good with those nice bed sides. You should throw in a truck walk around in the next video. Thanks, keep making the great videos!!!
Yes another great video .I use a cot Add a sleeping bag but I have been looking into those bad roll ups . simple it’s always the best. Health family and soul big3
Good video, I appreciate your honesty, and yes I like the wool blanket for warmth too. a bit bulky, very comfortable. I did not think about the bear benifit.
Hay Dewayne. I have a friend that has a canvas bedroll, who slept under a sunshade in the rain and worked well, I slept in my 2000 Delta horse trailer. I have slept in it on hunting trips in 18 degrees with no heat and used double fleeced blankets inside my canvas sleeping bag, which can get tight, but the warmth of that fleece is almost instant when it is cold. Those blankets were made just by buying the material and cutting them tying knot's in the two pieces but very warm. Just my 2¢. Love your stories and advice.
I do high backcountry pack mules. If you did want to go a little modern, I suggest taking an inflatable backpacking mattress in your be roll. You can get a 3" insulated one that rolls up tiny. I have foam mattress as well, but it don't do no good if it ain't with you.
Couldn't agree more. Go out there to go/get out there. 👏 👏 👏. I live in Arabia and there's nothing like a simple tent set up, campfire, campfire whiskey and some meat on a stick in the desert. My preference is the pack-away cot bed, but as you said, each to their own 👍
This channel is really entertaining and with really useful knowledge, really want to buy one of these use it to go camping, beach, or even just for the house!
Thanks, to mama, Dwayne and the team. I wonder if I could request something even more basic for us city slickers: How to start a fire in the wet conditions. Take care!
Thanks, Dwayne. I just spit coffee across the room. "Bear Burrito". LOL. I concur, wholeheartedly. Wool blankets, down comforters, canvas roll ups. My only concession to modern day is an air inflatable pillow (Klymit, I think..) Thank you for the great content.
Gotta admit...I do like my Cabela's setup of the big thick massive bag, the roll-up foam mattress, big boy cot, and Kodiak canvas tent- for those cold weather trips, but yeah, I am out of the elements. It has served me well in the eastern AZ mountains above 9000 feet.
I use a 4" futon mattress in my Prius on road trips. A cooler full of basic groceries and the absolute luxury of the KOA showers. That along with the aircon in the car? Some people think I'm roughing it. It's just another level of relativity. I save an enormous amount of money in my travels. I have a good time. It's like you said. It's about getting out there. I've slept on a saddle blanket under a tarp next to my motorcycle on the California coast. I've slept in a tent in death valley next to my other motorcycle. I've cooked my meals from the food I brought with me on several trips. I've slept in my car with the air running, and I've slept on the ground under the stars at the height of the Sequoia mountains. It's all relative. Get out there and live. I love this bed roll. Makes me think I'll encorperate some version of it in the overland rig I'm getting built up. "Adventure is out there!" - Ellie Fredricksen
Hi Dewayne, I 'm thrilled to hear I've won a prize but am in UK. Is that a problem. I tried to text you on the given number but it failed to go through (could that be a US number, or do I need to change the prefix?I Kind regards, Laurel Sayer
The sleeping system for the military is pretty good and light weight might consider that for on the trail. Does really good. as long as u got a flat area its comfortable enough
If you can find a 4-piece military sleep system with the thermorest inflatable sleeping pad, it is more compact and could be packed behind your saddle. They work in all environments with the gortex bivy intact. thanx for your perspectives!
Now a days seems as if everything people “know” is from tv. Everything worth learning I’ve ever found came from 3 things, or a combination thereof. Experience, an old timers advice, or reading a good book on a subject.
Just came across this video. I live in powell on the other side of the big horns from Sheridan. Im going to be using a bed roll very similar to the one you have this October while elk hunting.
We manty'd loads for sawbucks all the time. Seven by seven and eight by eight. I made my bedroll out of a waxed manty sewed toggles at the foot two wool blankets and a sheet. Wax side down and rolled to the outside. I used a second manty as a rain fly. Snug and dry most of the time.
If you're older and a little banged up and need to get a good night sleep and don't really care what it cost I suggest the Therm-a-rest MondoKing sleeping pad. It just might change your life. I like to put mine on a Davis Tent and Awning Big Boy cot.
You can go with memory foam mattress cover. They can be cut to size and they roll up really small if tied with a rope. Tarp wool blanket. Just my $0.02. I have a military patrol bag and a small wool blanket. Yoga mat Tarp. Hobo set up.
Idea for future teaching on your channel ; Saw buck pack saddle verses Decker pack saddle , pro's & cons .. with a word on rope & knots . Just an idea 💡 Look forward to your shows . Great job & keep'em coming ! Thanks for sharing your thoughts & experiences.
As a man raised by a single mother, I appreciate all y'all do on this channel. Thanks brother!
I second that comment.
I wasn't taught these things growing up. Thank you for this channel.
Dewayne, I'm a viewer from Mexico and just discovered your channel a few days ago. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, know-how and the old ways which are so valuable and necessary for this world.
What he said, same for me. Cheers.
Guess yt didn’t like my asking about your location, & deleted it
Let's not forget those 14 shot revolvers.
Love the fact that cowboys actually liked their rest and put a great deal of care to it. Greetings from Spain.
Best video on a bed roll I have seen. Thanks.
I'm not a cowboy and I never plan to be, but this man is full of and blessed with great wisdom, and the ability to share it in a calm understandable way. I always look forward to a new video especially a "cigar video". Keep the great videos coming Mr. Dwayne

Your last statment was the best sir ! "Keep in mind why your doing what you're doing ". So very true.

Thank you for all your videos.

I’ve moved to hammocks, but used a bedroll for quite sometime. I respect the bedroll and it’s good sleeping but the convenience of a good hammock is great.
Wouldn't trade my hammock for anything. I've even gone to making my own. If you can hang it beats sleeping on the ground for sure.

Seriously love my canvas cutter bedroll. Plus they're based out here in Utah and very family oriented.
Great video and a simple sleeping setup is indeed one of the most important things you need in the backcountry.

Thank you sir
This man is a legend.
I have exactly the same Hudson Bay wool blanket. Warmest blanket I've ever owned and my bones appreciate it.
Love the insight you share with viewers. Looking into a manty and 100% wool blanket for camping. Thank you!

Very good advice Have a safe trip home ❤️

Hi from outback Australia great videos great channel
Very informative, very enjoyable. Thank you.
Great video, I learnt lots, thank you sir
I live in a big city in England, so I'm definitely never using this knowledge, but it is oddly satisfying to listen to.
You are cool. I had never heard Bear Burrito before. Thank you, John in Wilmer
Love these outfits and your Ranch
Hello from Alaska. Good presentation and info. I also opt for blankets in my bedroll for the same furry reason
I do high backcountry pack mules. If you did want to go a little modern, I suggest taking an inflatable backpacking mattress in your be roll. You can get a 3" insulated one that rolls up tiny. I have foam mattress as well, but it don't do no good if it ain't with you.
Excellent information! Thank you Dewayne!
Couldn't agree more. Go out there to go/get out there. 👏 👏 👏. I live in Arabia and there's nothing like a simple tent set up, campfire, campfire whiskey and some meat on a stick in the desert. My preference is the pack-away cot bed, but as you said, each to their own 👍
Thank you for sharing your invaluable insights! This information will guide my efforts to prepare for my next Western adventure!

This channel is really entertaining and with really useful knowledge, really want to buy one of these use it to go camping, beach, or even just for the house!
Great Explanation, good advice thank You !! God Bless !! H.
Great video. Thanks for sharing what you know. Very useful.
Dewayne sounds like you and sons had good time together.
Thanks, to mama, Dwayne and the team. I wonder if I could request something even more basic for us city slickers: How to start a fire in the wet conditions. Take care!
You guys be careful going home already love you both
I'm hoping I'm doing this right sorry it's so late I just got your message
Thanks, Dwayne. I just spit coffee across the room. "Bear Burrito". LOL. I concur, wholeheartedly. Wool blankets, down comforters, canvas roll ups. My only concession to modern day is an air inflatable pillow (Klymit, I think..) Thank you for the great content.
“Bear Burrito” You couldn’t have described it any better. We think alike friend!
Great info!!! I envy your lifestyle!!!!
Not the bed roll I'd take for hiking but looks comfortable if you're out with the mule or the truck. Thanks for sharing.

This guy is as real as real can be!!!
Your videos are always fascinating. Real, and practical. I'm in the UK but can still apply your suggestions to camping out here.
Hi Dewayne, I 'm thrilled to hear I've won a prize but am in UK. Is that a problem. I tried to text you on the given number but it failed to go through (could that be a US number, or do I need to change the prefix?I
Kind regards, Laurel Sayer
Awesome video boss!! love the canvas
The sleeping system for the military is pretty good and light weight might consider that for on the trail. Does really good. as long as u got a flat area its comfortable enough
Great old time cowboy logic keep up the videos
Very nice looking setup sir
the adventure is the reward, the sense of accomplishment is the key to happiness
If you can find a 4-piece military sleep system with the thermorest inflatable sleeping pad, it is more compact and could be packed behind your saddle. They work in all environments with the gortex bivy intact.
thanx for your perspectives!
As a motorcycle camper, I believe a good sleeping system is a must. There are many options that are available.
We have these in Australia. We call them 'swags'. Best night sleep you'll ever have....
I ordered some heavy canvas and a long zipper to make my own bedroll this Fall. I'm going to use Cordura for the bottom.
Pine bouts...leaves ...can also provide good insulation on the ground
I use a Teton -35F sleeping bag, 3” memory foam all rolled up in a 46” canvas bedroll cover!!!
I was fully expecting you to stuff that empty pillow case with that hay one of the mules was carrying :)
