Nice! I went from 3:57 in 2012 to 2:34 in 2018. Never had a coach though. But every small increment under 2:50 gets tougher and tougher. Good luck with your goals!
Hello, I am going to run my first marathon end of October I have been training for it but I am interested in knowing how you trained over the years ? 😊

Same here, it was 12 weeks for me for my first marathon and it was a sub3 in the first half because what is a pacing strategy right? and then I bonked and THEN while fighting to keep running at really slow speed, I somehow added an extra mile to my race. I ran 27.8 miles in 4:18. I was torn between feeling proud because I finished and pissed because I f*ked up lol
Yeah he ran a 1:35 half in the middle of a marathon. Basically he could run a 3:10 marathon with minimal training. It's not really an average to advanced progression like the title implies, it's an advanced to more advanced progression.

Wow, the most honest video I've seen in a long time! I'm 60, but still, this video gave me so much knowledge about marathon strategy. I've never paid attention to nutrition, now I know how important it is. Thanks for sharing it!!!
Just ran my first sub-4 at the LA Marathon a few days ago. Really appreciate all the insight you shared in this video and definitely going to be following along from here as I pursue my own running goals.
I am 51, just did my first marathon, London this year. I thought I'd get 4.40 but the lack of training and thinking I could just eat a packet of chocolate biscuits the night before and lack of seriousness I ran 5.30. I now am hooked and want to do the 6 star majors. I am giving myself 10 years to complete it and will leave Boston to last meaning I need to get down to about 3.50 by then. I will do it but it's time to get serious and train properly. Looking forward to the journey.
My first marathon was Grandmas marathon in 2022 🎉 small world now I've raced 6 times since then but nothing compares to that Minnesota support that whole city just shows up ❤
Moral of the story is get a coach early. I can't tell you how nice it is to have an incredibly experienced coach just plug workouts into training peaks for me. I love nerding out on training plans but this gives you an absolutely solid foundation to start from. Good on you for keep at it.
Still fairly new to running after an injury I came back last year wanting to get a sub 20 5k. In April 22 I was at 23 mins and change. Bought some books and started studying. Got to my goal running 19:35 in September. Then did a half marathon training block but aggravated my hamstring three weeks before the race and couldn’t recover. So then in January this year I decided to sign up to my first marathon. Edinburgh. Followed Pfitz’s advanced marathoning plan (seems logical for a first attempt!) and experimented with fueling etc. Race was last Sunday and I ran 3:06:32! Couldn’t believe it! I’ll watch more of your vids to see what I can take to try and break 3 hours. I love hearing people’s journeys and where they were to where they are. It gives me belief I can achieve things too!
Dude, this video gives me goosebumps. I started running in 2014 (I mean I literally started jogging, just played some tennis) and got into it a bit more seriously in 2015 (jogging regularly 30 min 4/5 days a week). Injuries and my work meant that I didn't progress much until I ran my first marathon in 2019 (3:41:22). Then in 2020 I started training indoor cycling at home (for obvious reasons), but in 2021 I made what I consider to be good progress in running. In 2022 I went back to running a marathon (3:24:59, huge PR for me) and I realized that by adjusting some things in 2 years, maybe I could achieve a sub 3. I am 30 days away from my next marathon (I hope to be between 3:10:00 and 3:15:00) and then in September I will go for a sub 3:10:00. Like you (although with a different level of training) I realized that after several years I think I am beginning to understand how to prepare for and run a marathon. I repeat once again, this video gave me goosebumps (and great motivation for the next 15 days of high load). Thank you. Now I'm your fan from Argentina.

Great video! Congrats on your achievements to date. I ran my first marathon 2 days ago and ran a 3:44:01, which I’m very happy with, considering my current work commitments. My goal is to beat my dad’s PB of 3:08 at some point and I think this is the inspiration I needed to sign up for another marathon next year!

I turned 50 last year and I set myself the goal to run a sub-90 for the half marathon. I achieved that in April this year. Next on the list is a 3:15:00 marathon. Yes, I'd like to go sub-3 but I think that might be a bit too ambitious. But hey, I might surprise myself. I'll get a better idea when I'm deep into marathon training.
Hi, i'm 46 old too. I have same goal to marathon. One day after my 46 birthday i change everything in my trainning. In a feew day i try to run 5k sub 20. Good Luck.
You and I are on the same path. 45 here and just ran Berlin in 3h26 and it wasn't my best day. Hope to run a 3h10-15 next April and go sub-3 at Chicago 24.
I love that training for a literal marathon is very much a metaphorical and emotional/spiritual marathon in itself, and that it can last for years and years as things slowly fall into place. Long distance running is something we are evolved to do! I think I ran for probably 6-7 years before I really even started to find true joy in it, but over the last 3 years I have come to love it more than anything and I'm climbing up the walls on any day I don't get at least an easy run in. Pursuing a goal like this over so many years really does reap so many rewards and benefits - massive kudos
Great content again! Side note, love your thumbnails the last few months, they seem to be helping you get more clicks, they look professional and original - and make me want to click each time. Fonts and images are killing it 👌
Amazing video man, super nice to see you breaking down your story! Also, that sub 2:42:00 goal sounds just perfect and I'm pretty sure you're gonna get it through! Keep it up!
This was super inspiring. Straight off the couch, it's been 10yrs since I've actively worked out. My goal is to run a half marathon by the end of this year 2024. Current volume is 20 mile weeks with 10 min/mile. I have zero clue how to structure my workout, but I'm super glad i found your channel.
Your content is incredible man. So much respect for your journey and resilience. First marathon this Sunday in Cleveland, sub 3 being the goal. Thanks to you (and some other channels), I feel my marathon education is far ahead where it should be for my first. Keep it up man, amped to see you continue crushing goals and sharing what you learn along the way!
I appreciate your feedback on your attempt to not stop until you hit your goal. For the longest I’ve had an issue with nutrition as well for the marathon. I still haven’t figured it out but seeing your video gave me hope that I can. I went from a 3:57 my first marathon to 2:59. Sucks I hit that time in July 2019 at SF Marathon and Boston didn’t happen. Went into a deep depression hole. Crawling out now and looking to get back out there. I’m starting from scratch but you’ve inspired me; truly gave me hope. I want to thank you. 2024 will be building it back up and goal to run Chicago next year 2025. I also love Chicago marathon ran it 3x. I am from NY so ran NY and it is a tough course. Living in the Bay Area now but 2025 looking to crush some goals. Would be great to chat with you if possible. Thanks again. My name is Adrian
I ran my first marathon in december 2022 last year and ran a 3:25 without a proper training plan or much training at all tbh (was def underprepared) but this year im going to try harder and give myself an actual plan. Im starting my base training now eventhough we’re still in May but I’m trying to go sub 2:50 this year and when looking at the pace required, it seems pretty do-able. Thabks for this video, it was rlly inspiring and fueled my motivation to train even more
Also cracked 3 hours (Finally) in Chicago 2022. Was my 4th marathon and a 14 minute PR. That time I was finally able to crack down on nutrition and hydration (GU/Spring Energy/Gatorade). Going to be in Berlin in a few months so will be excited for that race. Good luck in Chicago! So long as there is good weather (like in 2022) you will do well!
Had to pause the video at 25 seconds to write a comment since it resonated so much! In 2015 I started running and my first ever run was a half marathon from the sofa, without any prior training. Needless to say, it was gruesome and brutal. But it got me hooked to running, since then I’ve ran 16 half marathons and 2 full marathons! Love the video already!
Awesome video about your journey. I just did 3:11 at Chicago this past weekend and that was my second marathon ever. Really looking foward to go 3:05 next race
What was your first marathon time? I have my first marathon coming up in Tulsa next month and am trying to get 3:20. Super impressive to get 3:11 in Chicago though so congratulations!
Congratulations! This is the first time i see a video of yours. I am 54 years old and have run 8 marathons so far I plan to keep running til I am 84 so still a long way to get there. I was never able to crack the 3 hours (PBT of 3:08) and I think this is probably out of my reach now. Enjoy the ride!
Kudos to you man, I just started on my marathon journey and get the blow up thing, did it badly in London this year. You inspired me to carry on! Currently in a 10 km race block. Liked and Subscribed.

You were correct about being a good runner in 2017. It was just the wrong year. Your times in 2017 & 2018 were still solid considering the carefree, lax training. Bravo sir, keep knocking out the goals.
Amazing… I had a stomach cramp on my second attempt. Cramps on the first one. Had to walk/run the last portion on both. I felt like I never wanted to do it again and here I am trying to understand this better. Thank you for sharing your story. It’s very inspiring.
What a great 5 year journey! Did my first ever NYC marathon back in Nov 23, your video gave me the inspiration of making it a long game of inches, thank you!
Thank you for sharing your running journey, like a lot of runners, cracking the 3 hour barrier has been my goal since 2017 and still have yet to do it. You've given me hope after seeing your gradual training approach from being a rookie to training like a pro and finally reaching your goal.
It’s crazy that I find you on this channel 4/5 years later. My first time finding your channel was on your photography channel, where you did a funny skit about GH5 users and 5DIV users arguing about specs and color science. Fast forward 5 years and I just started getting into marathon training and found this channel! Thank you for sharing your failures and the injuries you incurred throughout your journey. It makes me feel better knowing that I’m not the only one experiencing frustrating obstacles along the way. Trying to hit a sub 4 on my first marathon for next month… with only 25-30 miles a week of training. I don’t know where all these people with kids find the Time to run 50+ miles a week
Thank you for this brotha! Just ran my 2nd marathon in Chicago. Absolutely devastating and disappointed with the time. Goal is 3:30 and did a half earlier this year at 1:31… I ve cramped up both years where I had to go to a med tent bc I couldn’t move. I just can’t get this nutrition things right. Thought I did the right things this past year. But inspiring!! I’m glad it takes some ppl multiple years bc all you ever see is instant success on instagram from other running influencers. Much love brotha!! PS: I’m currently in Chicago so would love to catch a run sometime!
This is crazy. Congrats! I walked-ran my first and only marathon 10 years ago, now prepping for a second one this year. Hopefully will take a page out of your book with stacking training for a few seasons in a row, nutrition and recovery. Cheers!
LOVE the intro and your video on your journey! BIG Congratulations on your SUB 3 Marathons! Videos like these are a great motivation for beginner runners like me across the world. I'm personally attempting to run my first ever Marathon this Fall in Toronto! ✌
My wife started running in 2017 and did her first 5km effort in over 25 minutes. With me as her coach just 6 years later (sept 2023) she has now ran a pb for the marathon of 2:34:29.
So thankful for creator hooks email because that’s how I found this amazing video. I’m not a runner but it was amazing to watch your journey. The realistic journey of getting under 3 hours is cool. Marathon running changed your life. Grandmas race is also hilarious .congrats.
Great summary of the two curses of marathoners, nutrition and volume. This is what my second triathlon season taught me. Still can't crack the bike run sequence.
Just found this channel and the story hits home. I’m headed into my 4th marathon (Chicago) this fall and I’m hoping to finally break the 3hr barrier. Nutrition has been a big factor in the past. It took me a while to realize that alcohol and junk food don’t mix well for me. Been doing things a lot differently this training block and I’m hoping to finally make something special happen. Thank you for the inspiration!
Very inspiring my man! I am not as much into road marathons, but trying to improve on trail ultras. The notion of "these things just take time" is absolutely true. Thanks for the motivation.
Thank you for the motivational content! I used your mantra “if not now, when?” Last weekend to help me to my first sub 3 marathon in Wellington, NZ. Age 51 (3rd in AG) Keep up the great work!!
I love this because it is the absolute opposite of a "can I run a marathon with no training?" Video. The race isn't the goal, the training and improvement is the goal.
I absolutely love your content. I am currently on a sub 3 journey. I blew up on my last marathon in March and found you shortly after. You are true inspiration, hopefully we can race together someday.
Stubbled across your site and loved it. Really great content - thanks for sharing. I'm on the journey too... 4:36:54 NYC 2015 to 3:19:37 in 2021... Had a few years of going backwards hovering just around sub 3:30 but focus this year is sub 3:15 in Berlin 2024. Nursing a hamstring niggle currently, so my 3rd Boston is looking a challenge in 6 weeks time, but this video just reminded me why I love this game!
Great video and solid information. I ran Boston this year and then London 6 days later with a 75 second difference in finishing times. I started running about 6 years ago ago at the age of 57 and it has been a fun journey with a lot of learning about myself and what works. 👍🏼
Awesome! Congrats man. Marathon is something fun but if you want a time then you gotta put the 80/20 in. Jack Daniel’s Running Formula is full of amazing information and solid workouts.
Thoroughly enjoying your videos, Eric. I love the planned / unplanned approach. It’s reassuring to know I’m not the only one! 🙌🏻 I ran Boston this year, my first in the States. I hope you run it, you won’t regret it 🇺🇸 🔵🟡
It was so cool to see you and Casey in NYC last year. I Just signed up for CIM for my first marathon ever this december 2023, but seeing yall out there just motivated me hella and I want to hit that bucket list like you did in 2017.
Amazing video! I loved hearing every part of this journey, and wishing you the best ahead! I would love to see a video or hear more about your PT exercises and how you overcame PTT, as well as how you work through avoiding it currently. This has been plaguing my running journey, and your success story brings me great hope!
Fantastic video! Probably the best I've seen on running! Thanks for making it. I look forward to learning from your journey as I try to figure out how to get sub-3 in my 50s after a PR of 3:45 in my 30s 😊
I ran Carmel this year too, I chose it so my whole famiy could come watch me run my first marathon. I had the tenacious goal of a BQ on my first marathon out, and was able to achieve it. I owe most of that to living in las vegas and training at altitude along with having my family there along the course to support me the whole way! I will be running my second marathon Saturday Sept. 16th at the 27th Air Force Marathon!
This has so many relatable experiences... Thank you for sharing! Hopefully applying a lot of learned things to break 3 in Chicago this year... It'll be my 7th marathon and I started about two years ago. Thx again 👍👊
You're a very talented storyteller and not too bad of a runner either ;) I bombed my first two marathons too, almost beyond belief. Redemption is a long road and I am pacing myself accordingly.
Thanks for sharing your story. I had a 3:11 @ Chicago last year. A 3:05:27 at the Woodlands in March. And I’m currently working through phantom niggles inside a taper for the Buffalo marathon on the 28th, which I apparently will run a 3:03 if I continue along the Floberg marathon trajectory. I’ll also be bringing the GoPro. PB city, coming up.
My first marathon was Chicago 2022 and I did it in 5:48, I must admit I didn't take the training too seriously because as a former figure skater, I thought I had enough endurance and overlooked the nutrition during the race, the marathon is really humbling. Now I'm running more consistently and doing research so I hope to get a better time for my next marathon.
This is awesome! As a full-time filmmaker and former professional athlete, I find this very inspiring. Speed skating was my sport (not the best for running) and now I have decided to do a marathon in October. Thought it would be cool to document my journey and will def use your channel for inspiration. Both in terms of the documenting part and the training part!
Indeed, everyone is unique. My Olympian coach from the Netherlands told me that it takes 10 years to become the best version of yourself, but your story proves it took only 5 years."
I just finished my 3rd Cleveland Marathon Challenge Series (10km on Sat/Full on Sun) with two new PR's but missed my 3:59 goal by 14 min and hit the wall HARD. This video really helped me reflect on my race and makes me determined to come back next year even stronger!
Nice video Eric, thanks for sharing. Have a similar story as my daughter and I started running marathons. We [daughter and I] ran Grandma's 2022, loved the day we had and also achieved a PR's and BQ's. Not quite your, Kofuzi and Ben's speed, but for a 64yr. old, feel i did pretty well with a sub 3:30 for my 5th Marathon. Chasing the 6 star and maybe will run into you one day. Next up for me, Berlin in September.
Cool video! What a dream. It's still great to do sub 4 with no proper preparation and the setbacks on the way! I'd love to do sub 4 but I was really proud to run it feeling relatively good and having fun most of the time. Except the torrential rain.

Hi, i'm 46 old too. I have same goal to marathon. One day after my 46 birthday i change everything in my trainning. In a feew day i try to run 5k sub 20. Good Luck.
I am also 46, and l being getting marathon fever to do a sub 3 hours marathon on my 50 birthday.
Please let me know your progress.
Pursuing a goal like this over so many years really does reap so many rewards and benefits - massive kudos
yo honestly how do you keep just coming back with all the times that you didn't simply succeed... that's so so inspiring
Great content again! Side note, love your thumbnails the last few months, they seem to be helping you get more clicks, they look professional and original - and make me want to click each time. Fonts and images are killing it 👌
The whole redemption arc of your story was fantastic. Was really rooting for you by the end after all the disappointments along the way!
Having run half marathons and finally taking the leap for a full this year, I really enjoyed hearing your journey. Thanks!
Aw man! Thanks so much! Hope you have an incredible race tomorrow! Water and pasta and water and pasta!!
I trained like mad for years. Gave it all. Never got any better than 3.30. Frustrating to say the least. Well done on your effort, sir!
Thabks for this video, it was rlly inspiring and fueled my motivation to train even more
Great vid. I’m coming back from a double break in my ankle and it’s a long road back into hell. Thanks for the motivation👊
Let’s go!!
@rk1720
Man- I Fkn love how honest you are about the process and just... ya know.... getting your teeth kicked in over and over.
So inspiring and motivating.
This was the exact video I was thinking of searching for this afternoon, what a coincidence! Great stuff as always, keep it up!
Kudos to you man, I just started on my marathon journey and get the blow up thing, did it badly in London this year. You inspired me to carry on! Currently in a 10 km race block. Liked and Subscribed.
love how sarcastic you are with your comments on your drawbacks and it's not just funny it also makes me feel like I can fuck up too it's fine
I come back to this video every now and then to motivate me for my upcoming marathon!
Amazing progress, Eric! Dropping from 3:59 to 2:48 is no small feat. Your journey is a testament to dedication and hard work. Thanks for sharing your tips and resources. 🏃♂💪 #MarathonGoals #RunningCommunity #OaxSport
I like that you really to took the time to tell the story of each milestone, including those on which you stagnated or struggled.
Thank you for sharing your journey, it's definitely not linear, and yet you kept on working and trying.
Beautiful video man, real soldier not giving up 🫡
One of the best running videos on RUclips!
Dope video. As a 3:05 marathoner, this is absolutely motivating to run sub 3 hours 🙌🏽
Wow, not only informative, but subtly inspiring. Well done.
Damn!!! This channel deserves a million subscribers! The content and your cinematography! I subscribed immediately while watching this video!
Thank you for the inspiration!
bringing you back. how did it go??
Great video. RX bars during a marathon is CRAZY 😂 inspiring not just for the fitness and commitment but as a content creator.
Nice video! The irony of Spring energy being adequate nutrition for you, considering their recent scandal lol. This is inspiring!
That intro... my poor ear drums...
Hearing all the setbacks and seeing you talk about resilience was really amazing. Great job! I need to set some goals.
Congrats on your PBs! I appreciate the encouragement. 😊
Great video and solid information. I ran Boston this year and then London 6 days later with a 75 second difference in finishing times. I started running about 6 years ago ago at the age of 57 and it has been a fun journey with a lot of learning about myself and what works. 👍🏼
Been watching RUclips running channels since 2014…Easily the best out of them all…and it’s not even close.
Man, that means a whole lot. Thank you ❤️
Awesome! Congrats man. Marathon is something fun but if you want a time then you gotta put the 80/20 in. Jack Daniel’s Running Formula is full of amazing information and solid workouts.
So glad I found your channel! I love how you film and edit - great content!
I’m in love!! This journey is exactly what i am in for Xtri. Way to go!!!
Bro, I love your video. You do such a good job at making videos! I love how raw you are with your running!!
Well done sir. Love hearing about the process! Working on that BQ myself. This info and perspective helps a ton. Be well.
Let's goo!! I'm signed up for CIM, so I'm hoping to be there as well if all goes according to plan! :)
This is an incredibly inspiring video. Thank you for talking about the failures as well as your victories.
Injuries are the absolute worse. Congrats on your progress!
Amazing and thank you for sharing. I also ran 2017 Chicago and 2022 NY. Will be aiming 3:05 in this year Chicago. Hope to see you there.
Needed this video, thank you. Going through a rough patch with my running at the moment
You're a very talented storyteller and not too bad of a runner either ;) I bombed my first two marathons too, almost beyond belief. Redemption is a long road and I am pacing myself accordingly.
Thank you for sharing your journey. Truly amazing. Well done!
My Olympian coach from the Netherlands told me that it takes 10 years to become the best version of yourself, but your story proves it took only 5 years."
love your channel I am trying to train to qualify for boston this fall, llove your production quality!!
Love this video. So simply put and relateable. Thank you for sharing!
I just finished my 3rd Cleveland Marathon Challenge Series (10km on Sat/Full on Sun) with two new PR's but missed my 3:59 goal by 14 min and hit the wall HARD. This video really helped me reflect on my race and makes me determined to come back next year even stronger!
Dude great Spring Energy Ad! 👏 - OH and awesome job.
Such great storytelling, as always, keep it up!
Hitting Sub 3 would be a dream. Great video !!!
Cool video! What a dream. It's still great to do sub 4 with no proper preparation and the setbacks on the way! I'd love to do sub 4 but I was really proud to run it feeling relatively good and having fun most of the time. Except the torrential rain.
i am honestly amazed how much you push yourself in these races to the point you're puking every time lol
Great Video Flo, super inspiring.
Moin zusammen. Schön mal wieder live dabei zu sein 🙂
