That was the exact same realization I had after learning of Mentzer. Afterwards I have refused to leave gym without pushing my muscles to failure and I have seen great results. You don't have to do it the exact same way he does in this video, but the goal is the same - high intensity lifts with prolonged contractions and negatives till you can't do it anymore.
I looked up ‘heavy duty mike mentzer triceps’ about an hour and a half ago. I just hit chest and triceps and got this recommended and saw that it was posted 45 minutes ago. Thank you to whoever runs this channel.
Isn't it ironic that Mike is the only person to acheive perfect score in Mr Universe AND Boyer Coe is the only person to acheive perfect score in World cup Bodybuilding Championship.. Heavy Duty is no Joke! Thanks John as always!
I wish I had discovered MM decades ago, his high intensity/to MMF has rejuvenated my body and in my 6th decade of life allowed me to regain former muscle I had lost and in time will create more muscle, I started 5 months ago at zero, I had not worked out in over 2.5 years due to health reasons and Mike's old videos have given me a second chance. I only wish he were here to thank in person.
Love this clip, imagine being on your last rep to absolute failure, your muscles feeling like they're ripping out of your skin, Mike Mentzer screaming science at you, all while being watched and filmed in a gym full of people.
Mike is such an eccentric genius. Thinking about naked women is just going to distract you. But the ability to focus the mind somehow is what separates people in terms of gaining strength.
I train almost exactly like that. Slow eccentric with proper form. Except it is important to take a week off every 6 or 8 weeks to rest and let your body recover as well as your mind. This kind of training is very mentally taxing.
I wish I had utilized this style training when I was young. I just started HIT at age 53. It would have been great to do it when I was young, before I got shoulder injuries. It does work spectacularly. I started training younger guys with this method recently.
Look at how much more difficult these reps are because Markus is performing them deliberate and at relatively slower cadence. This is insane training. Love it!
Thank you for consistent posts John. I have noticed the most recent uploads with Mike training Markus give an insight into how the workouts prescribed in “High Intensity Training the Mike Mentzer Way” should be performed. Very well done.
I just got introduced to Mike Mentzer H.I.T heavy duty! I think it's a fantastic way to train. Took a week off to reassess my workout. Next Monday is a go with heavy-duty protocols. Trying to gain muscle on OMAD natty.
This reminds me John. In your conversations did Mike ever talk about "Negative accentuated dips"? Arthur Jones talked about the general principle which I get but when he mentioned dips he said that "they're possible but harder to learn" To clarify, I'm not referring to negative dips where you climb on a box or something and then slowly do the negative portion only. I'm talking about negative accentuated as outlined in Arthurs old journals where (in the case of chinups for example) you would pull yourself up with both arms then lower slowly with one, pull up with 2 then lower with the other. I don't in the case of dips see how you would deal with the obvious balance problems (Unless you use a dip machine) and was wondering if maybe Mike had mentioned it in your conversations. Thanks. 😁
With H.I.T, the fibers recruit from the 1st rep and maintain that vs volume high rep training the first 5 reps-10 reps is like a warm up till you get to the higher reps so what the point of that? This just makes so much more sense.
so your triceps are well toasted out and exhausted w the pushdowns but when you go to machine dips you have chest shoulders + tris working so you get more out of it. similar to doing heavy pullovers to failure and then lat pulldown you would fatigue the lat to the max and then go with a lat+biceps in lat pulldown.
Pre-exhaust the Triceps. As this is a Tricep workout. Dips will incorporate chest and shoulders and could easily be a chest focused exercise, but by exhausting the Triceps with the pushdowns, the Triceps will be the first thing to go and will feel the most work with the dips now. Would recommend it with other exercises and muscle groups. Do the Isolation exercise first and then the compound.
The lack of speed is to eliminate momentum, remember it's not about making the plates go up and down, it's about using the plates to fatigue the muscles to the point of perfect muscular failure. This is the stimulus that causes the muscles to defend themselves against a future assault by growing and they WILL grow as long as you give enough time to recover.
Nothing has done more for my legs than slow reps like these. When you're nearing failure you really know about it. I like the slow reps because you can correct your form mid rep and get the perfect stretch
Ancient man didn’t have supplements nor did he eat as often as we do today. Protein is over emphasized, more water exists in muscle than protein. Would you drink more water to grow muscle?
Depends on your recovery ability, I can train my arms once ever five days, I can only train my legs every 21 days. Mike was not only a genetic freak but also enhanced by steroids, reducing recovery time significantly.
Keep in mind that Mike's philosophy on HIT training evolved over time, and his career spanned decades. The way he trained in 1978 is not necessarily the training he recommends in 1998. He studied, learned, and developed HIT over a long period of time, as well as adapting it as he went.
He did train 3-4 days per week during his competition years, but he has since learned this was a bit much. Later he cut it back to 4-8 days between workouts depending on recovery ability and how much rest you need.

Watching Markus get to a breaking point with Mike motivating him is more exciting than sporting events.

A question: do you have any idea where Markus now is?? Thank you!
@nikosnoulezas I saw he commented on a video from this channel awhile back so I can only assume he's still training somewhere.

Seriously Bro i want to train with someone like mike..
next session in 8 days... wow
There’s no way that they waited 8 days to film the next workout. This entire series was filmed in 2 days.
Best advice @1:30
Question. With this triceps training, are we not leaving out the strech of the long head performed in other exercises such us skullcrusher?
The triceps function is extending the forearm and drawing the upper arm into the body. Both functions are covered in the two exercises he prescribes.
I did my back/bicep to failure using mikes video and I’m sore as helll.
Yeah the soreness can last for several days sometimes. I've been doing hit for several years and am still sore just a little less now.
Poor Markus this workout looks very hard and painful.
Damn, how I wish I followed Mike’s method in my youth. All those years of multiple, half assed sets and wasted hours in gyms 🤨
What is a good alternative to dips I dont have the machine or dip bars in a small condo gym. I subbed today on the superset close grib db bench.
Close-grip Bench Presses are a good substitute.
What’s the second machine called ?
Hes 100% right the muscle building is in the contractions not the full motion bs
The negatives as well.
Comments section is on fire
Why does Mike like to do the isolation exercise before the compound exercise in his supersets?
It's called "pre-exhaustion." It allows you to continue stimulating the muscle beyond the point of natural failure
so your triceps are well toasted out and exhausted w the pushdowns but when you go to machine dips you have chest shoulders + tris working so you get more out of it. similar to doing heavy pullovers to failure and then lat pulldown you would fatigue the lat to the max and then go with a lat+biceps in lat pulldown.
going from triceps, to failure, to dips, to failure, u aint need no more triceps for a week
Shame he was always overshadowed by Arnold....... his mind and body were one a true genius
What's the reasoning for starting off with pressdowns before dips and not the other way around?
Pre-exhaust the Triceps. As this is a Tricep workout. Dips will incorporate chest and shoulders and could easily be a chest focused exercise, but by exhausting the Triceps with the pushdowns, the Triceps will be the first thing to go and will feel the most work with the dips now. Would recommend it with other exercises and muscle groups. Do the Isolation exercise first and then the compound.
How many set i should do for triceps?
You should do the same amount of sets as shown in the video. That is, two exercises, one set each.
somebody beatboxing in the background?
Perfectly i wasted my time years in gym😢
So speed is more important than weight?
by far.

Do you recommend Mentzers protein intake? It seems kind of low, considering the latest studies?
Same doubt
Was wondering the same
Ancient man didn’t have supplements nor did he eat as often as we do today. Protein is over emphasized, more water exists in muscle than protein. Would you drink more water to grow muscle?
i eat at the same protein intake, even in a slight deficeit i get stronger
The intensity of the workout is most important.
Work smarter not harder
Whats the warm up here?
Low weights of the same exercise
Low weighted dips. Whenever there is a superset, you warm up with a lighter variation of the second exercise.
