This man was a genius. I’m 44 and not a bodybuilder, but by following his principles amongst others, I’ve been able to get in the best shape of my life- 6’2”, 190 pounds, 13.2% bodyfat, lots of muscle and a visible 6 pack- I started at 239 pounds several years ago. My ultimate goal is to get between 10-12% so I have a ways to go, but I’ll get there!
That is amazing, man. What a great accomplishment that I wish more people would reach for. too many people abuse their bodies all their life and then wonder why they have so many health problems. I was fortunate enough to get into it a young age and stuck with it. I can't tell you what it does for not only your general health, but also your mental well being.

I wish one day you can step into the shoes of skinny fat indian men predisposed to 20% less lean mass than you and half your test levels and who put in 5 times mire effort than you to barely reach half your strength and aesthetic level. Best explaination of why you need to do cardio and not just weights I ever heard. 'In order to metabolize bodyfat, you need oxygen. Lifting weight doesn't burn bodyfat, instead it uses glycogen which is sugar stored in the muscles'.
It's a bit of an outdated 80's ex phys explanation. When you burn muscle glycogen, the body wants to maintain homeostasis so it converts stored fat to blood glucose, and that blood glucose to muscle glycogen. When it comes to energy metabolism, sugar and fat are all just carbon chains and the body has no problem converting one to the other as needed. When you burn glycogen you ultimately burn stored fat. No exercise specially burns fat, they all just burn stored carbon chains. Luckily cardio does tend to burn more calories per minute than resistance training (you're breathing hard for a reason), plus cardio both conditions the muscle mitochondria and promotes production of new mitochondria, which gradually improves the efficiency of fat oxidation. The cardio Mike described (jogging and moderate biking at a conversational pace) sounds a lot like zone 2 cardio, which is especially helpful at promoting those adaptations. So he's ultimately still right, even if his reasoning isn't quite up to date lol.

If you burn fat, you're Gucci. If you burn glycogen, the body will use stored fat to synthesize glycogen and replace what you used up. Either way, you're ultimately burning fat. As far as energy metabolism is concerned, both are just long chains of carbon for the body to use. It has no problem converting them back and forth. You don't burn fat faster with moderate-intensity exercise. A higher _percentage_ of the calories burned _during_ the activity are fat, but what matters is the total number of calories burned. The activity where you burn the highest percentage of fat is when you're sleeping-you barely burn any glucose. But the total number of calories is very low, so you don't lose any weight. Same principle. Anyway, glycogen stores get used in moderate-intensity steady-state activity too. That's what most researchers believe the "bonk" is. When endurance athletes have mostly depleted their reserves of muscle and liver glycogen, they hit a performance wall and completely run out of energy. Meanwhile, they almost certainly have tens or hundreds of thousands of calories available in the form of stored fat. Glucose metabolism does correlate with more intense activity, but you're always doing both. It's just a question of percentages. Just running out of glycogen isn't particularly catabolic because the body REALLY doesn't like using muscle protein as a fuel source. It's like tearing wood beams out of the walls of your house to use in the fireplace-the body can use muscle protein for energy, but it needs to be pretty desperate. You need to be in a total energy deficit, not just out of glycogen. Running out of glycogen is a very rare occurrence either way. I don't think there's much strong evidence that keto diets condition the mitochondria to favour fat metabolism. The research is pretty conclusive that when you control for total caloric intake, there's nothing special about keto when it comes to fat loss.

I've been following bodybuilding since I was a kid. I'm not a bodybuilder myself, but I've always enjoyed following the sport. In my honest opinion, Mentzer had one of the best physiques of all time
While I really admire Arnold as a body builder but Mike has taught me every thing I know about body building like no one else.. Buffet once said if you can explain it to a 6 grader you probably do not understand it yourself.. Mike can explain all this to even a six grader and it shows how clearly he understood and mastered these weight loss and training concepts.. He was a genius
Wow. I was listening last week to a summary of some of the most recent nutrition studies and the experts are now saying exactly what Mike says here. A calorie is a calorie. Balanced diet. Reduced calorie diet etc. He was spot on.

Ol’ Mike says you shouldn’t get sore but I do get sore but not for days just a day or a day and a half max. Also i am going up in reps AND weight with this program. I was on a strict carnivore diet the past couple of years but with this program i feel comfortable re-introducing some carbs. Particularly oatmeal, mixing in a nice big gob of Peanut Butter. I only eat it once every few days. I feel it’s necessary anyway given how expensive meat is getting. So one high fat carnivore meal a day and another meal with peanut butter oatmeal 3 eggs or a pork chop and some kind of really healthy veggie like some pickles or olives if i have any.
Facts; Mentzer is and was a more composed man that Arnold is and was, in my opinion. The Weider brothers saw in the Austrian a better propaganda machine, I have to admit that. These hard truths honestly have me close to tears. All the work I’ve been putting in for months, knowing I have so much more to go is scary and amazing. I’m down 36 pounds and I need to lose about another 10-12. Heres to another mile on the bike
do you use macro split like Mentzer said ? 25% protein 60% carb and 15% fat ? also do you do only low intensity cardio like walking and when ? Preferably morning on the empty stomach yeah ?

By gaining more muscle, you will inevitably burn fat because of how calorically dense muscle is (requires more calories than fat). You may also choose to go on a calorie deficit but you can lose muscle this way. I was scaref of being fat until I started listening to this guy this morning and I decided to start lean bulking. He is genius

I have started by slowly dropping my caloric intake and the weight loss hasn't been drastic but visible and I'm ok with that. Looser clothes, increased definition and even vascular visibility is more than enough to keep me excited and motivated seeing as it's results I've never had before. Slow progress, as long as it is progress, is still progress.

Again, I’m stunned. Plus I’m not completely wiped out physically because it’s low intensity cardio. This channel is incredible.

All good info here, I would just recommend, instead of jogging, to do walking on a high incline, since running is too stressful and taxing on the body, making it harder for the muscles to recover from your weight lifting sessions.
John, great interview with John Hansen about Mike Mentzer. I really got to learn more about Mike and the challenges he had throughout his life. You are a really loyal and dedicated friend. Unfortunately there are some very bad interviews on youtube that portrait Mike in a very bad light which did influence my thinking about Mike but thanks to your account on Mike I have changed my viewpoint. I would have preferred Mike over Frank Zane in the 1979 Mr Olympia and Mike should have placed higher at the 1980 Mr Olympia.

63 years old - 2 meals/day Steak & 3 eggs for breakfast, Salad with chicken for dinner & zero snacks. Over 8 months I lost 25LBS + gained lots of muscle mass with hard training. 5' 10" started @ 225LBS. Have not done any cardio yet but at the gym I have 3 things going on at a time & that makes my heart rate go up and it keeps my workouts short.

There is a high pitch humming in this video. If you look on the EQ (spectrum of frequencies) you should see a spike somewhere and with a little experimenting, you can cut that piece out without affecting his voice.
This should be required for every person looking to lose weight. We have it even easier now because we don’t have to comb through a book we can just scan the barcode weigh our portion and input it into an app or website. If people understood the simple concepts in this video they would realize you do not have to do some crazy off the wall and restrictive diet fad in order to lose weight. I went from 220 lbs to 155 lbs over the span of a year and a half by doing just that. I even ate a small portion of a sweet I craved every single day. I didn’t spend hours in the gym either. I did weights at home mainly dumbbells 3 days a week for about an hour per. Then I would at least walk/jog/run for 30 minutes most days. Personally I felt my best at a 25-30% carb, 20-25% fat, 40-50% protein ratio. Find what variation works for you. I know people who like mike did their best at higher carb and I know other people that had success by lower carb.

Whilst high-intensity anaerobic exercise demands glycogen, the function of eating carbohydrate is to prevent those glycogen stores becoming depleted, and since such exercise has to be brief by its very nature, the increase in carbohydrate necessary is adequate from a truly balanced diet commensurate with what the body uses; typically 12% protein, 25% carbohydrate (more is not better), 63% fat (again, keep in mind that in weight loss a significant amount of this 63% will be derived from body fat). The ideal fat ratio is that of our body's fat; 57% MUFA, 40% SFA, 3% PUFA.

do you use macro split like Mentzer said ? 25% protein 60% carb and 15% fat ? also do you do only low intensity cardio like walking and when ? Preferably morning on the empty stomach yeah ?
@@luka1932 This is the formula he advises to build muscle while also being above maintenance. By gaining more muscle, you will inevitably burn fat because of how calorically dense muscle is (requires more calories than fat). You may also choose to go on a calorie deficit but you can lose muscle this way. I was scaref of being fat until I started listening to this guy this morning and I decided to start lean bulking. He is genius

I have started by slowly dropping my caloric intake and the weight loss hasn't been drastic but visible and I'm ok with that. Looser clothes, increased definition and even vascular visibility is more than enough to keep me excited and motivated seeing as it's results I've never had before. Slow progress, as long as it is progress, is still progress.

Again, I’m stunned. Plus I’m not completely wiped out physically because it’s low intensity cardio. This channel is incredible.

All good info here, I would just recommend, instead of jogging, to do walking on a high incline, since running is too stressful and taxing on the body, making it harder for the muscles to recover from your weight lifting sessions.
John, great interview with John Hansen about Mike Mentzer. I really got to learn more about Mike and the challenges he had throughout his life. You are a really loyal and dedicated friend. Unfortunately there are some very bad interviews on youtube that portrait Mike in a very bad light which did influence my thinking about Mike but thanks to your account on Mike I have changed my viewpoint. I would have preferred Mike over Frank Zane in the 1979 Mr Olympia and Mike should have placed higher at the 1980 Mr Olympia.

63 years old - 2 meals/day Steak & 3 eggs for breakfast, Salad with chicken for dinner & zero snacks. Over 8 months I lost 25LBS + gained lots of muscle mass with hard training. 5' 10" started @ 225LBS. Have not done any cardio yet but at the gym I have 3 things going on at a time & that makes my heart rate go up and it keeps my workouts short.
Curious as to when work out. In the morning?

There is a high pitch humming in this video. If you look on the EQ (spectrum of frequencies) you should see a spike somewhere and with a little experimenting, you can cut that piece out without affecting his voice.

This should be required for every person looking to lose weight. We have it even easier now because we don’t have to comb through a book we can just scan the barcode weigh our portion and input it into an app or website. If people understood the simple concepts in this video they would realize you do not have to do some crazy off the wall and restrictive diet fad in order to lose weight. I went from 220 lbs to 155 lbs over the span of a year and a half by doing just that. I even ate a small portion of a sweet I craved every single day. I didn’t spend hours in the gym either. I did weights at home mainly dumbbells 3 days a week for about an hour per. Then I would at least walk/jog/run for 30 minutes most days. Personally I felt my best at a 25-30% carb, 20-25% fat, 40-50% protein ratio. Find what variation works for you. I know people who like mike did their best at higher carb and I know other people that had success by lower carb.

The macro-nutrient ratio still isn't healthy for the longer-term though ;-)
Whilst high-intensity anaerobic exercise demands glycogen, the function of eating carbohydrate is to prevent those glycogen stores becoming depleted, and since such exercise has to be brief by its very nature, the increase in carbohydrate necessary is adequate from a truly balanced diet commensurate with what the body uses; typically 12% protein, 25% carbohydrate (more is not better), 63% fat (again, keep in mind that in weight loss a significant amount of this 63% will be derived from body fat). The ideal fat ratio is that of our body's fat; 57% MUFA, 40% SFA, 3% PUFA.
