Here in the US we have GPS to tell us when the rear of our trains have cleared a speed restriction or crossing. Before GPS we had footage counters on board. Push a button and it starts counting up, then just reset when your length has cleared.
In the UK some trains have distance travelled calculators based on taco i.e. an axle counter. But thats mostly freight locos. Passenger trains vary from 2 cars to 10 for the majority and in real life speed boards are placed in such a way that you wouldnt be breaking the speed limit even if you accelerated as quickly as possible after passing them i.e. overlap between when a speed limit increases and when your told you about it. Either way based on the speed before the speed limit you can work out how many seconds to wait before accelerating if needed. 60mph is just under 25 metres per second. Most carriages are between 20 and 25 meters so at 60mph leave 1 second per carriage, 30 leave 2 seconds per carriage etc etc.
As soon as Squirrel mentioned he didn't know the answer to this question, I went straight to the comments. Thanks for the insight, I was wondering the same thing.
lol, it's been a while since i played, well i forgot i have Train Sim World, the original. I remember trying to run down the train, and i could not exit. One passenger was blocking the darn door
Having spent an unfortunate amount of time on 150's, that's what they are actually like. It did run for about an hour without malfunctioning in some way, so not entirely realistic.
The only small thing that bugs me with a lot of British route scenarios is the wait time at small stations ,in real life 1 or 2 passengers get on and the wait time would be about 10 seconds , doors close and off you go again ,on TSW it's about 30 /40 seconds and if your on tight schedule in the game it adds up
In real life you have a timetable. You can wait minutes if you arrive early or timing is built in or leave asap if your running late.... either way most stops are timed for about a minute so 10 seconds would be unrealistic
What? Utter rubbish. You're on a timetable. You are being held at the station to keep up with your timings and it's completely normal on regional routes.
As someone who works right next to the station in redruth, and lives in Truro, the level of detail is insane in this. The level crossings are in the right places, the buildings localised to the stations are spot on...its fantastic. To answer a couple of questions you raised in the video, the 40 limit coming into Redruth is because you're going over a bridge immediately before stopping on the platform, and the branch line coming out of Truro goes down to Falmouth
The structure you saw on the right (48:34ish) and were unsure of its purpose, was an engine house (steam) to pump water out of the nearby tin mine. Great videos my friend, many thanks.
As someone who passes through Truro a lot (and also visits) that station is incredibly accurate! If they have it in the game would love to see you do the GWR falmouth line
hello Paul. Great video and me being a Cornishman has to say its a real shame that Penzance doesn't actually show St. Michaels Mount which is an area of land that is accessible to people when the tide is out. It can be walked from Penzance direct to St. Michaels Mount. I have also driven this route on TSW2 and it was a real pleasure. I would love to know if Truro to Falmouth would be a thing in the future. Always love your content buddy...keep it up.
About the "knowing when the end of the train passes the speed limit", there are a few possibilities: Some trains have built in functions where you program in the length of your train and while driving you hit a switch in the cabin and the system will calculate from the current speed and the length of the train when the end of the train passes the point where you activated the system. On most tracks there are distance markers of some kind that can be used to estimate the distance traveled, these can be numbered signs that indicate to the driver where on the route they are or for example on electrified routes the distance between catenary poles is relatively standardized, so the train driver can count the poles to estimate the distance, give it a pole or two of leeway and you know when the back of the train passes the speed limit.
And in passenger trains i don t think it s that hard to estimate the length of the train. I m curious about the US trains, when there s 80 cars, that would be awesome to know how they know.
Tripped over this as you do. Interesting to see so much of the modelling looks quite accurate - the walls outside Pz station, the '3 arches' as we know them where a stream runs out to the sea. IN the distance waterside they've even modeled St.Michael's Mount! Clever stuff!
The layout is reasonably accurate, although its from awhile ago (there are a few sections of track at long rock and St Erth that are gone now). Interesting to watch as I live in Hayle, work in Penzance (opposite the depot) and visit the pub in Lelant! For what its worth I've never seen a train using the train cleaner at the depot either. Maybe one day...
Also Redruth train station wasn't realistic. Also train stop though crambone on Wednesday. Also going through Scorrier and Blackwater line was not real as well :(
@@Gotta_Bee_Sam you realize this route is set in the late 90s/early 2000s like he says in the video right? The things in here were probably correct 15 years ago or so when this route is modeled.
I live in Truro and commute to work in Redruth via a car and at 48:45 to the left is a dual carriageway which I use to commute to and from work twice a day. And going on from what Paul says about putting speed cameras on downhills, on the same dual carriageway further back towards Hayle where it merges into a 2 lane road is a part called "The Big Dipper" and on either side it has speed cameras on the downslops to catch you out
Nice to see some TSW 2 again! Really like this route. Sure, it can be better in a few places, but it's a pretty nice route. Would love to see a video on London Commuter in the future though. When I drive on it, it always reminds me of one of the first videos of yours I watched, where you took the Crosscountry Voyager from Brighton to East Croydon. Goodness, that must have been about 7 or 8 years ago now. My, how the years have flown by. But yeah, would really love to see a video on there at some point, as it's one of, if not my favourite route in TSW.
Wtf!I live between Truro and Penzance it's my home town and it's sooo relastic 😅well station are. At Redruth Station it would be main Post Office across the station to left and the buildings look different. That bridge at 49:47 is there in real life and so it's that old station AT 48:33 that's an old mine house where we use to mine for copper, led etc. That's actually one of wheel busy mine and to left in real life would be opened up and you would be able to see a Jaguar dealer ship and the A30
In India 2 things are used to know whether the train has cleared the section from speed restricted area- 1. Markers indicating (1st Moto coach clear, that means 25% in case of Mumbai local, successive boards till 4th Motor coach cleared). 2. The train guard is station on the trailing end of EMU. They ring a switch to let driver know that the train has cleared the section.
Train Sim World 2 looks better but Train Sim 20xx has better routes, locos and content overall. I play both and I hate how Sim World took a step back in some areas (like the camera angles, scenario builders, AWS, etc)
Ever driven down a road to a underwater tunnel with a 8% gradient, single file and a speed camera at the top and bottom to measure the time between and compare to a minimum time you should keep to be below the speedlimit? The tunnel drops 133 meters below sea-level. It's for cars and trucks.

I beleive it all comes down to route knowledge, drivers have to know routes they're signed on like the back of their hand (every signal, junction, road crossing, etc...) so I'm sure they'd know the landmarks to judge when was the correct time to accelerate.
I find that to keep most of the schedules you have to run the train within 1-2 MPH of the speed limit. If the limit is 70 then you need to be running 68-69 or 70 to get around any issues you may run into. Red lights, etc.... You seemed to run 10-20 mph under the limit at the beginning....Also, if you are running at the speed limit as you just see the station you can brake easily to stop in plenty of time... When I ride transit trains in USA (real life) they tend to fly into stations and slow very quickly to stop.
as a person who lives in truro there are a few inaccuracies with the station. First, the station he arrived on is platform 1 not 3. Hi
The single track line out of Truro is the maritime line - modeled in Train sim 2020: Falmouth Branch.
About the "knowing when the end of the train passes the speed limit", there are a few possibilities:
