When the loco gains more amps it is known as the 'field divert'. The field divert is an automatic operation that weakens the electric field on the traction motors, allowing more current to flow to them. it kicks in around 35mph which is why you see the needle on the ammeter suddenly rise. The Class 40 Preservation Society (based at the East Lancashire Railway in Bury) own 3 of the surviving 7 of this class, with 40145 being the only one able to work rail tours on the main line.
Multiplayer train sim with route/signal controllers, oh my, oh amazing would that be. I was in tears over your German speed signs rant in Friday's stream, signs all over the place haha.
Squirrel your the most entertaining youtuber in my opinion you cheer me up and bring me laughs and you are a serious gamer you don't mess around alot and i like youtuber's like that.So thanks for being here man and good luck for the future!!
The idea of having human rail traffic controllers setting the signals and operating the switches is pretty nice. I mean they would have to actually "interfere" with signals and switches in the game of the people running the trains, and they would all have to be connected to one another... So they'd all have to be on a server together and there'd have to be an extra "rail traffic controller client" or something... For the German railways there is "Stellwerk Simulator" which gives you a good idea of what a rail traffic controller actually does. To be honest... It looks like possibly the most complicated "game" ever :-D I am German + railfan and I hardly have any idea what's going on when I see a vid of someone playing it. The game is so realistic, you pretty much have to learn the job of a rail traffic controller^^
Flashing single or double amber, means a track switch ahead. Nearer the station, flashing double amber is an approach-control signal. Single flashing amber is an approach-control signal meaning that the signal at the far end of your platform is red (danger aspect). Love the videos m8.
He Squirrel, I lived in St. Albans for 6 months and had goosbumps when you were passing the station in game. It's really well done and I would love to go back again ! Keep up the good work ! Cheers from Holland
Hi Paul, great video !! These trains always come along the line behind my house in Leicestershire and they are used to carry London underground trains i'm guessing to and from the factory in Derby there is always one on each end and they come every week day. They sound great too !!
It's a train and yes you can put the throttle all the way and get away with it if the train breaks down that's a faulty train and it needs to be junked or fixed. Good video.
The needle change at 30mph is a weak-field change i.e. equal to a gear change in a car, lorry etc. These changes occur around 15, 30 and 45 mph speeds and are automatic.
Old train is nice for real best is the old steam train we have one here thats only goes in the summer its like a museum train but its nice to take a little trip..:)
I used to be a fanatic fifteen years ago!! People were joking to me big time. They would say things like "did you come back from Montana yet"? Everyman wanted to be a "train driver" at least once in their lives!!!
I believe the "changing gear" is the generator changing to a higher voltage, which allows the motors to spin faster but at lower torque - like an electronic gear (current controls torque). More modern trains do this continuously, with digital control
I work on the REAL 40145 the spike in power is the engine divert kicking in it effectively is like a car with a turbo when it kicks in and gives you more power.
Great Loco! you've highlighted one of the biggest issues with train Sim - the lack of realistic traffic levels. I've tried adding my own extra timetabled services in but the editor is horrendous and almost impossible to use... shame the experience is let down by ( in terms of programming) things which are super mundane.
Hi there, I am very fcinated by your videos and this old one in particular. I have flown flight sim for over 30 years and buint my own cockpit, but never tried the train sim. Here February 2020 what would you recommend to start with as app? Thanks in advance Stephen Odgaard
Great vid pal. But how come your HUD ammeter seems to be working ok as mine starts ok but when field divert kicks in mine goes daft and I have to use the one on the dash. i'm at a loss.
squirrel there is a train simulator that has a very good multiplayer its called Run 8 and its not the best simulator graphicly speaking but is spot on as of phisics go its like omsi for trains with great multiplayer
Love your videos man, Always nice riding with you. I asked myself when I looked at your channel for the latest "Where can Squirrel Take me Today?" lol Anyways I been meaning to ask you how are the BenQ monitors holding up for you? Reason I ask is I been hearing mixed opinions on them and I want a cheap alternative option for my customers.
@ 03:26 I'm not sure why Paul would like that train but if he loves it then it's his, here in the U.S I would be like uhmm where is the American coupler lol
And bus station has never been at train station. Also odd why train at platform 2 has a green signal not sure where an emu would be going with no overhead power
james green james green if you mean at Bedford then there is a coach pick up directly outside the station. also the signal on platform 3 (not 2) may of been set from 3 out towards the north(sharnbrook jct) before signalling the emu service in. have had this at my own station because the driver never proceeds past the signal it doesn't clear, signaller won't cancel the route as this would then become change of aspect. Then the southbound signal would be set so the service can leave to depot or in service. As i said I've had a few occasions on bi-directional working when the signaller forgot to cancel the normal signal setup to continue on when trains have terminated, driver then does turnaround and had a proceed going out both directions.
This train runs on the NYMR Whitby to Pickering line it is a nice line that goes through Goathland, where heartbeat was filmed and this was also at this station. That was filmed in Harry Potter is Hogsmeade Station.
I find it very disappointing that the career scenarios for this loco only feature the MML out of St Pancras, a route on which they never saw regular service. Surely the GE route out of Liverpool St to Ipswich would have been more appropriate?
12:08 - 12:14 as if you'd do that in real life XD like "let me look through the walls and see where the checkpoint is" lol One thing that concerns me here though is the train brake indicator on the hud. Something similar happened in the other video, makes me wonder what really made the train be way under the track speed, is the train glitchy or was it not properly configured?
That's the AWS, or Automatic Warning System. It alerts the Driver as to the signals ahead. The ringing bell means the signal is green, and as such the 'sunflower' display remains black. In this instance, the Driver need take no action. A horn indicates any other colour of signal, or an upcoming speed restriction, and is a cautionary warning, which the Driver must aknowledge by pressing and releasing a button on the desk. The 'sunflower' display will then become yellow. If he doesn't press the AWS cancellation button within a few seconds of the horn going off, the brakes will automatically apply, and bring the train to a stop. The system operates via a a magnet placed between the rails some yards/metres before each signal, known as an 'AWS Ramp'
It is powered by an 2000hp English Electric 16CSVT diesel engine driving an electric generator. This generator provides the electrical supply for the traction motors and train lighting. It also had a small boiler to generate steam for the train heating, though many Class 40s either had this isolated or removed toward the end of their working lives.
Sorry to be so nerdy guys but you are watching a vid about a train sim so here goes. Does anybody know how to get my HUD ammeter to work the same as the drivers one. Because after the first field divert it just does its own thing. I've tried reloading my DLC and even a new install and still it doesn't work right. However all the vids from other people seem to show it working correctly. If anybody can help i'd really be greatfull.
Up round these parts (County Durham) there are pylons that are painted an odd beige-y yellow colour, not entirely sure why, but it's a break from the norm I guess...
hi squirrel i got a question . with the game train Simulator is it a idea to drive a Dutch railroad with a dutch train .. i dont know if steam got a download .. ! but or would be Nice of you can make a video of it ... im a small fan .. but im love to whats a lot of your video's specialy train video's . Bus video's
the sander applies sand to the track in Front of the driving axles to give more grip. For example if there were leaves on the line and they got crushed and turned Into an oily substance, the sand would create a gripping residue with the ground up leaves and provide more grip. a sander is generally used on steep hills.
This game so needs a proper engine - but my hopes are not set too high... Will you try Dovetail Flight School coming out next week? This loco has, apart from having the great classic BR "bonnet look" quite an interesting bogie layout: 1-C-C-1 ;)
X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X Note how I said "At some point". Doesn't mean it will happen any time soon. They've hinted on twitter that it might be TS2017, but we can only hope...
i have been behind her a couple of times on heritage railways and she never brakes when at full chat from a stand still.... she also sounds brilliant!

Ah Squirrel. I do appreciate all the train sim video's and streams you do. Thank you as always.
He Squirrel, I lived in St. Albans for 6 months and had goosbumps when you were passing the station in game. It's really well done and I would love to go back again ! Keep up the good work ! Cheers from Holland
Went through Flitwick where I live. Always adds some interest.
Hi Paul, great video !! These trains always come along the line behind my house in Leicestershire and they are used to carry London underground trains i'm guessing to and from the factory in Derby there is always one on each end and they come every week day. They sound great too !!
Joe Hyde those are class 37s aren’t they? Similar appearance but a different class
Ahh the old class 40 English Electric. This is my second fave engine.. Class 55 Deltic is my fave
It is interesting how old trains even here in US still gets more attention and love than the new ones. Good video Squirrel.
Nice to see Train Simulator back.
This loco is actually based at the East Lancs Railway Paul, and is usually out to play at their diesel gala
Finally an hour long video.! Thanks paul.!
YAAASSSS!!! Train Sim!!! Its been long enough.
the class 40 was lovely the sound it was full of power
It's a train and yes you can put the throttle all the way and get away with it if the train breaks down that's a faulty train and it needs to be junked or fixed. Good video.
The motor current jumps when the field strength is switched as the speed increases

What about that AMP Meter under the Revcounter/Speed indicator ? That's showing completely different numbers, than that inside the train
Paul, could you PLEASE do more trucking school? I'm really struggling in my company and I have no idea how to run it.
I have currently both a Inter-City 125 and a BR class 40145!!
Excellent run Squirrel thumbs up
Old train is nice for real best is the old steam train we have one here thats only goes in the summer its like a museum train but its nice to take a little trip..:)
well done squirrel
I used to be a fanatic fifteen years ago!! People were joking to me big time. They would say things like "did you come back from Montana yet"? Everyman wanted to be a "train driver" at least once in their lives!!!
awesome video hope to see more train Sim ones
On my 2006 Trainz Simulator, I can get this train up to 100mph pulling 500 freight cars. Totally realistic.
The Little Engine That Could.
Connor nope you dumb kid is train sim 16 not 06
I believe the "changing gear" is the generator changing to a higher voltage, which allows the motors to spin faster but at lower torque - like an electronic gear (current controls torque). More modern trains do this continuously, with digital control
@Squirrel Nice job! :) I'm thinking to get that loco sooner if not later
I have a 8 meter and 2 meter wide Hornby railway in my loft (attic)
SQUIRREL YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!
I work on the REAL 40145 the spike in power is the engine divert kicking in it effectively is like a car with a turbo when it kicks in and gives you more power.

did they adjust the running times for the old diesel electric capabilities? since it was running hot just to make it on time...
nice loco to show off Squirrel :)
how i have mist you playing trainsim im happy your back in the trains😃
✌🏻👏🏻👌🏽🕹🖱🖥⌨💻🛤
Well done!!!!
yeah train sim is back :)
Nice vid mate.I hope you have the woodhead route it's pure mint with this old gall.
yet another great video Paul. please do omsi videos though soon or at least a stream.
The "little switch" is for the windshield heat.
As soon as you went outside view [under cautionary signals] I thought....AWS....cancel the warning! lol
"I'm not going to buy a rail sim, it'd be boring!"
*watches someone else play rail sim on youtube for an hour instead*
Nice one...
SirLoinOfsteak85 is not boring
The Trainz 2012 and the Trainz New Era have multiplayer and the Run 8 have multiplayer too.
I wont sleep until Squirrel says goodnight!!!!
PLEASE DO IT!!!! I NEED TO SLEEP
You beauty squirrel. Been waiting for this video. :D
Hi there,
I am very fcinated by your videos and this old one in particular.
I have flown flight sim for over 30 years and buint my own cockpit, but never tried the train sim.

Great vid pal. But how come your HUD ammeter seems to be working ok as mine starts ok but when field divert kicks in mine goes daft and I have to use the one on the dash. i'm at a loss.
I wish you could go for a high speed one afterwards. Hopefully a long (30 - 60 mins), yet fast route!
Great video Squirrel! :D
There is a multiplayer train simulator, its called Run8. I don't know too much about it but apparently its alright.
squirrel there is a train simulator that has a very good multiplayer its called Run 8 and its not the best simulator graphicly speaking but is spot on as of phisics go its like omsi for trains with great multiplayer

I'm not sure why Paul would like that train but if he loves it then it's his, here in the U.S I would be like uhmm where is the American coupler lol
SGT Ghost shut up
Written @48:59 in video. @squirrel . You could have set the boiler to run as that would have acted the same as the water cooler in your computer
Are you thinking of the Class 37? The Class 40s were less widespread and withdrawn in the 80s.
It would be cool if there were scenarios in countries you usually don't see in games (like Australia)
The East Lancashire Railway currently has 40145 and 40135! Google ELR Diesel group to see when they're running
They recently added the 40106 in their fleet too.
And bus station has never been at train station. Also odd why train at platform 2 has a green signal not sure where an emu would be going with no overhead power

I usually see this train but it carries coal.... I see it as a freight from stockport to buxton then back to somewhere, i love it
very well done XD interesting and fun video
YES IS BACK :)
+Squirrel Where do you get the class 03 shunter from??
Cool video
What is that water level thing? I mean is it like cooling water or something like that?
Nice vid. How did you like the Prague btw?
This train runs on the NYMR Whitby to Pickering line it is a nice line that goes through Goathland, where heartbeat was filmed and this was also at this station. That was filmed in Harry Potter is Hogsmeade Station.
No, this train doesn't, it runs with LSL, but is mainly based at the ELR
love the vids as always but can I request that you test a train from northern rail 😀
Hey squirrel I really like your videos, what is your favorite sim game you do
Is there any other routes that have decent scenarios other St Pancras to Bedford?
For this loco?
ɷ Heeeey Frienddss I Have F0undd W0rikingg Online Hacck visittttt : - t.co/7ImXsFaIr3
ikr this game is to cool
I find it very disappointing that the career scenarios for this loco only feature the MML out of St Pancras, a route on which they never saw regular service. Surely the GE route out of Liverpool St to Ipswich would have been more appropriate?
Why do you press "F1" to see the distance? You just have to look down left at your hud...
Squirrel can do the Amtrak Pacific Surf Liner route form las angles California to sand Diego California
hi squirrel i lki your videos as allways
the loco number is actually 145 as 40 at the start is the loco class
squirral come to the south west youll see a lot of the intercity 125
12:08 - 12:14 as if you'd do that in real life XD like "let me look through the walls and see where the checkpoint is" lol
One thing that concerns me here though is the train brake indicator on the hud. Something similar happened in the other video, makes me wonder what really made the train be way under the track speed, is the train glitchy or was it not properly configured?
Squirrel, the new train sim is being converted to Xbox one (and the flight sim). This will mean it will take longer to complete
Can anybody tell me what does the sun-shaped light on the dash tell? And what are the ringings from time to time? Thanks!
That's the AWS, or Automatic Warning System. It alerts the Driver as to the signals ahead. The ringing bell means the signal is green, and as such the 'sunflower' display remains black. The north yorkshire moors railway(whitby/pickering) runs old deltics i think.
I wonder how thick the wires are to handle 1,800 amps
I used a wire gauge calculator and it recommended 150mm for a 2 meter cable passing 2,000 amps.
It is powered by an 2000hp English Electric 16CSVT diesel engine driving an electric generator. This generator provides the electrical supply for the traction motors and train lighting. hey paul ..are there no routes through wales

why is there a ringing sound at about 8 minutes?
ha! "bells and whistles"
Up round these parts (County Durham) there are pylons that are painted an odd beige-y yellow colour, not entirely sure why, but it's a break from the norm I guess...
What settings is your game on?
tried train Sims before I get overwhelmed pretty quickly lol
if you think this is overwhelming you should try OMSI
+Grayson mountford I'm close to blind lol much tougher for me than most people's
hi squirrel i got a question .
with the game train Simulator
is it a idea to drive a Dutch railroad with a dutch train .. i dont know if steam got a download .. ! but or would be Nice of you can make a video of it ... im a small fan .. but im love to whats a lot of your video's specialy train video's . Bus video's
Patje050 no steam does not have Dutch trains
about two months until the Olympic games. second week of August
Hi Paul, can you do a train journey from London Liverpool Street to Norwich in a Class 90? It passes through Chelmsford
Or, could you do a train journey from Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport in a Class 317, or 379. The line passes through my home town
+MBrown246 i dont think stansted is in the game
It's not, only the GE main line as far as Ipswich.
Whats is the Sander for?
the sander applies sand to the track in Front of the driving axles to give more grip. For example if there were leaves on the line and they got crushed and turned Into an oily substance, the sand would create a gripping residue with the ground up leaves and provide more grip. a sander is generally used on steep hills.
Cornish Gateway thanks for the explanation mate!
Absolutely No Problem Mate :-)

They're looking into getting an Unreal 4 engine on this game at some point.
+SmeagolPlaysMC I've heard that for some years now, yet we are sold the same game with new pricey content every year.
X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X Note how I said "At some point". Doesn't mean it will happen any time soon. They've hinted on twitter that it might be TS2017, but we can only hope...

Squirrel
Great, I look forward to hearing your opinion.
Viewer / YT subscriber since the ETS2 W900 video here ;)
I just got this in-game...it's power is anaemic, so goddamn slow. It takes forever to get 10 x Mk 1s to 100kph.
Have u done the alp-45 dp yet?
