Summer of 1982, my father put me behind the wheel of his 1981 K100 Aerodyne (3406 Cat, 13 spd.) for the first time. I was just 15 yrs old.. 39 yrs and 3 plus million miles later. Still love the cabovers.
We were hanging out at Jim Davis Arco Truckstop in 1980. Freddie Wolf from United Van Lines came through and we rode into San Leandro with him in his V8 Cat KW. Bad to the Bone. Coast to Coast it was the most. My V8 couldn’t keep up. Those were the days my friend we thought they would never end.
Ditto! When I was buying my first truck some 15 years ago I saw one with a 3408 posted for sale and I so wanted it. And then it had just sold! So I ended up settling for a 3406B. Still one of the best engines ever, but that V8 rumble is just priceless.
Greetings from Connecticut. I didn't expect to see one of these running around the uk. I hope it treats you well and doesn't drink TOO much fuel ;). I hear it's expensive over there...
Hi, it's thanks for the comment, we don't run that old kW too much, but she does odd recovery jobs pulling a landoll trailer, there are more videos of it on u tube under my name. Regards from a UK truck nut.
Ah man you said it well 😂. The US gallon of diesel is currently around $8.5 in Europe (at least in France but it's about the same throughout Europe I think). The European Union hates polluting vehicles. Almost all the trucks that are on our roads are Euro 6 (I think it's like the EPA in your country, and they all have def). Certainly they are very good trucks, surely the most efficient and most comfortable in the world (I am thinking of the Scania S 770hp), but their sound is clearly not as good as a beautiful CAT C15 straight piped. Really bad time for the truck/car passion right now and it's not going to get any better because of emissions standards and fuel taxes. I think the happiest people right now in Europe are Tesla fans 🤣
It's all good if you didn't get them we would have got them. The first 900 a long hood i bought factory kta525 twin stick ,sat on I-5 northern calif still have it & ofiginal engine that was in 1989. I was collecting them them .
@@grumpystruckshop3807 Yeah I knew about that. 3408 only coming out of factory with that setup. But never saw one in action like in your video. Very nice to see and hear it at work. The more turn you apply on the lever the more oil pressure in the brake saver raises and the more braking effect you obtain right? Old school folks say it works just fine as a jake but gotta keep an eye on oil temp gauge when coming down a hill and heavy loaded. Servicing the brake saver though seems a pain in the ass for both parts price and working hours required. Thanks for your reply!
@@grumpystruckshop3807 EXCELLENT.... Now manufacturers need to start making them again! They'd be great for buses/class A rv's. P.S your truck is MUSIC to my ears 🎵🎵🎵
Does the CAT 3408 come stock with a break saver/retarder? I see that you are pulling down on the lever underneath the steering wheel. What is that called? Thank you.
When getting these US trucks legal here in the UK we have to radically change the braking system to meet European standards. One of the main things is a progressive park brake control.
With Caterpillar engines it was an option to have a brake saver. A brake saver is a retarder that uses engine oil as a braking device. A brake saver is mounted between the bellhousing and the transmission. A Caterpillar only option.
Well the brakes have to undergo quite a bit of modification, which we do in our shop. The park brake must incorporate a progresive secondry brake to the trailer via the service line while being applied, and then locking on releases the air to the trailer, just parking on both drive axles of the tractor, also a valve called the trailer control valve has to be fitted, which takes care of emergency and service lines to trailer, it incorporates an automatic application of the trailer brakes in the event of air loss or a breakaway, which is extra to any springbrakes fitted to trailer.Ther is more but these items cover the basics if you are interested.
Instead of that, it pulls a 48 foot landoll trailer on recovery work, i trust you dont have a problem with that old boy!!! Is there a problem with our roads? Unless you have driven them you wouldn,t know that they are not much different to any road anywhere you just need more skill to use them !
You have more of an oportunity to rebuild and cherish them than i do, but still they languish in yards and fields rotting for years on end. You should thank me for saving them, i aint done yet!!!!!

Yes. She has a hydraulic retarder in front of the flywheel. Because a 3408 cannot have a jake.
When he applied the parking brake he didn’t use the knobs on the dash he reached for something in front of his knee

How is the ride compared to European trucks?
The ride is a little rough, because you sit on the wheel, rear suspension is air leaf peterbilt, so its pretty good at the rear.
