I have to believe that these businesses are not stupid. If they were, they would not have the history of success that they have currently. Shipping product and people, putting them up for a week or more, hiring staff to sell stuff, etc., all have a cost. I agree that in a perfect world GMT and others would attend these shows, but if the dollars and cents don't work out, it isn't really surprising that they do not. GMT has a decent podcast, a newsletter and articles on their website. While this is not perfect, I don't think they are weak in advertising. People know about their products and are buying them.
I suspect they ran the numbers and decided the possible bump in sales wasn't worth the investment. I am not an MBA though, so what do I know? I'm curious if anyone had any thoughts on this that they shared with you at Origins?
I enjoy your streams and content and hope to continue to do so. Keep up the good work!

The big cons don't need us and some within those circles don't want us. The little ones are making less and less sense for vendors. Excited for Adepticon in my backyard next year but I fear that's nostalgia for what GenCon was and I will be very curious to see what the non-GW wargaming presence is.

Certainly GMT, Compass Games, and Decision Games are vying for the top spot. I'm not sure I'd give it to any of them definitively.

The nature of the wargaming industry, both miniatures and boardgaming, has changed dramatically in the last ten years. The analogy similar to GMT on the miniatures side of the hobby is Old Glory, arguably the largest US miniatures company, that traditionally occupied a large portion of the dealer area at national shows such as Historicon. Old Glory will not be attending Historicon this July in Lancaster PA. The numbers just don't work out anymore for them.

I don’t understand GMT tbh. They could make so much more money. They don’t print enough product, they have expensive shipping when they shouldn’t, and they don’t advertise or attend events. It’s kinda like they don’t care about the customers. I mean, regular game stores offer free or even low shipping rates. I know GMT has to sell more than they do? I’ve always felt they’re just too conservative. But….I like and buy their games anyway.
Also, if one is simply patient, they can wait 1-2 months after p500 ships and buy the same game from a game store like GameNerdz or MM for a price cheaper than the p500 price and usually free shipping. Wth? They just need some young bucks to get some initiative and spend some money. It WILL pay off!

They don't attend events ? Maybe not the ones you attend. But they do attend WBC, PrezCon, and CSW Expo in an "official" capacity besides GMT East/West. Their designers/developers attend other ones. Keep in mind that many of these same people have day jobs so attending events takes vacation time. And thet are not the only company whose prepub prices can be matched or beaten by online retailers - I recently got STALINGRAD ROADS from GameNerdz for less than pre ordering direct ( the fact it took 3 months post general release pretty much made this the first and last Gamenerdz buy for me ).

I was a little surprised that this was apparently considered a controversial take by some people.

I don’t think it’s controversial….its been talked about before, many times. GMT and most of the wargame industry as a whole stopped going to Origins years ago. While the financials are the primary reason, another is that the people running the companies like to PLAY games rather than being tied to a booth for four days.

You know Ardy, they should be paying you good money for that kind of marketing tip. They need to get a clue. They need someone like Jess Service (formerly of NK) to bring new people in.

Well, KublaCon and Pacificon are a reasonable distance from Hanford... Hint, hint...

I know Kai and Chad Jensen used to attend KublaCon. I don't know if any other GMT designers/developers still do.
