I zone out when people are excessively laughing and talking. It drains me within minutes.I can't get a word in edgewise if they'd just close their mouth for 5 seconds.

I've experienced all of what she said, the discomfort in crowds, being able to smell things other's can't, intolerance of loud voices and so on. I love being alone, it's the only time I feel myself, and feel peaceful. I can stay in a bar for just so long, then suddenly I HAVE to leave! I wanted to add, I feel that we can be sensitive not only to living beings around us, but to those beings we cannot see, as well (ghosts). I do meditate, and spend alot of time alone.

Your video was very helpful to me. As a psychiatrist, I also used to pick up energies from other people. Now, I'm practicing about 5 minutes of mindful meditation after work at home. It's really amazing how you can recharge energy in such a short time. Thanks! Namasté.

I'm a couples and family therapist, and I think I may have started to burn out very quickly last year when I worked with addictions clients. I thought I wasn't cut out for the work, despite loving the work I do with my clients. But it's hard, between hearing their difficult stories and then dealing with staff who have their own issues. Do you have any other advice? Also, how do you handle being overcome with emotion and negative energy in the moment, such as in a therapy session or dealing with an overly anxious or critical supervisor/colleague?

Thank you, Dr. Orloff, for posting this...I've been this way my whole life, and have always been told "you're too sensitive!" until it was coming out of my ears! I felt very poorly about myself for way too long, thinking there was something wrong with me, since the people around me were all extroverted chatterboxes. I was always the odd person out. Now I accept myself as someone who would rather sit quietly, alone, and not be forced to be among energy draining people who exhaust me.

This happens to me alot ! I've always been very sensitive.
When I go to school I use public transport. If there are a lot of people, I'll be exhausted by the time I get there.
I start to feel really tired and nauseous.
Lately, I've been ' protecting ' myself by trying to close myself off everything around me (: It really helps!

Dr. Orloff, I am crying right now. You have just voiced me to a "t." I have every quality you just articulated...even to the point of being told by a parent, since childhood, that I'm "overly sensitive." I'm always told by my husband that I need to "set boundaries" and that I don't have to be everyone's best friend, feel their feelings, and have a deep, deep connection 24-7.
I'm shaking right now I'm identifying with this so.

This resonates with me SO much. It helped me to quit a job that I just started a week ago. And more importantly to know that my sensitivity is actually a gift is great. I always thought something was wrong with me. And if I was in a room with low or "bad" energy I always felt like something was wrong with me for wanting to lift the energy. I know it's a boundry thing and it's about being selective of where I go and -bluntly-minding my own business sometimes.

This is very important: Practice the 3 minute meditation I suggest in Positive Energy in Chapter 2 throughout the day. I use it all the time. It allows you to do mini-refuels and centering, which builds stamina an resiliance. I think I may have it on my website too.

Currently finishing up the last chapter of your book, just wanted to express how thankful I am that this information is available. I immediately returned to this reading after a short meltdown I was having about feeling shitty because my tendencies to indulge and being tempted to binge. On pg 208, you wrote about saying "yes" to honoring our sensitivities and by this we are saying "no" to patterns of abuse, neglect and addiction. 100% what I needed to hear. Very touching and somehow I know I was suppose to read it. That somehow turning to something that grounds me was the right course of action. But who knows... maybe it was all a coincidence. 😉

Judith, I wnet to the library yesterday to get your book & this was after another incident of picking up a persons emotions. I was feeling horrible since now it has skyrocked to about 2x's a week. I decided I'd keep my eyes on the car in front of me & not glance at 1 person. I accidently did but didn't pick up anything. I was so happy! I think if I had gotten so paranoid w/ the empathy thing hitting me out of the blue like this & increasing. I've already started reading the book. Thanks so much!

I have been told so many times that I am overly sensitive, like it was a very negative thing. It's really nice to hear that being sensitive is a good thing and I now know how I can still be this way, my true self, while protecting myself and setting boundaries. This helps a lot...looking forward to learning more about this subject. :)

I can relate. I always try to take my car places so I can make a quick exit if need be. Spending more than three hours with most people, even with those I love can start to feel like to much. And that's fine. I've learned to honor this, not put myself down, and care for myself! Loving friends understand.

TY, Dr. Orloff. I am also an empath and have found that another thing that needs addressing is a way to prevent other people's energy from hijacking and influencing your actions. This can be recognized when we find ourselves doing things that are just not us. I keep a protection around myself to counteract this, and it works, although, nothing can counteract judgments of others.
