- OC - Lakewood - 357 Squankam Rd.
At about 4:30 AM Lakewood Police department toned on a request for Engine 5 for a possible structure fire with heavy smoke in the area of 357 Squankam Rd. Police arrived shortly after and confirmed they saw flames from the second story. Engine 5 dumped a supply line down Squankam and started an interior attack of the fire trying to gain access to parts of the building. After seeing the main body of the fire Engine 5 called for a 2nd Alarm. The first ladder truck on the scene was ladder 5 of Lakewood. Cheif 1 then assumed command from Engine 5. The fire was then taken over the whole building and Cheif one requested more ladders and for engine 5 to get out and spray with the deck gun. They then went defensive for the remaining of the fire knockdown. After around 30 mins of fighting this fire, they seemed to finally have it under control with 3 ladders operating and multiple handlines. The fire was placed under control about an hour after that and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The Ocean County Fire Marshalls office is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
No injuries were reported.
Lakewood Town Wide Response.
Jackson Station 55 for RIT.
Point Boro Station 75 for the FAST.
Toms River Pleasant Plains to the scene with one engine and ladder.
Brick Town Station 22 to the scene with one engine.
Brick Town Station 24 to cover Station 68.
Point Beach Station 42 & 43 to cover Lakewood Stations.
Great videography and the drone shots were awesome!!!
What a great video! Unbelievable. Awesome job recording this!!
So what was the problem getting water to Lakewoods truck in the beginning?
bro the compositions in some of your shots is sooo good. very cool
You did fantastic job covering this. I'm glad you showed the finish.
fantastic job ??? 🤣😂😂😂🤣😂🤣😂😂😂🤣😂🤣😂🙃😛😛😛😅🤣😂🤣😂🤣 *_fantastic job..._* 😂
look at 0:44 when he arrives, fire but still small. Many fireman there but NO WATER. Look at 5:42 !! more firecars, more fireman - NO WATER. Fire now incredible ... look at the old man in front, trying to put on his uniform veeeeerrry sloooooow. I thought he takes saucers - the shop burning is named "picnic" ...
7:27 *FIRST WATER from above !! 👍👍👍💤💤💤 👉👌 💦 they awake !* SEVEN minutes after he arrived, may be an hour after first fire-car appears !!
shop is down, fantastic 🤦♀!!! job !
It's really amazing that much equipment and probably 100 plus firemen couldn't get the fire out before it destroyed that building. It is apparent a lot of training needs to be done. Get it right people.
At least the company sign / logo survived.
Momma told me if I cant say anything nice dont say anything at all! Great video, but the fire fighting speaks for itself.
Exactly ty
Wow!!! (3) ladder trucks w/hoses to bring this structure fire under control.
Nice camera work, as well as, the drone angles.
Amazing job! God bless you all. 🙏
Wow a lot of fire, hopefully there were no injuries to anyone related to this incident.
Thank you to all firefighters everywhere for protecting the citizens of your coverage area.
Great video... Thanks for sharing.
why state what everyone can see with their own eyes? Lack of multiple handlines in ops and exposure protection is where they went wrong here on top of how long it took to get ladders in ops.
@Nicholas Stack
You have no clue what you are rambling about
Good job with the film footage! 👍😁
and lousy job with the water. Was there a supply problem?
Great job on the video.
Nice filming!!
Wow. I mean could you park that rig any closer to the fire. You know your close when you are in the collapse zone of a 2 story building… 🤦♂️
That was my first thought when I saw the ladder parked there
I’m not even a firefighter and that’s what I was thinking.
First, excellent video drone a plus. Second, an exterior attack requires more time to execute; ladders and buckets take time to setup and engine companies require time to supply the aerials. Third, this building was a total loss before the fire departments arrived...large expanding fire.
Diagree.. These guys like their tower toys too much...Took them forever to set up…Deck gun would have been very effective very quickly
Nice job. Saw your footage on channel 12 news
awesome footage as always man. this was a good one.
So many professional RUclips firefighters on here
I was thinking the same thing. No occupation has as many Monday Morning Quarterbacks, as firefighting. The perfect fire department doesn't exist. ALL departments have room for improvement. It does bother me that so many states make low demands on firefighter's required training. And although many departments require their volunteers to be Firefight I or Firefighter I and II, many states do not require volunteers to have ANY training. They (states) often leave it up to individual departments to decide what training to give their members. Dangerous at best! There are a lot of past and present firefighters on here, but for those whose experience in firefighting is only through watching videos, crawl into a fully involved, zero-visibility structure, where rescue is needed, and you'll find out REAL quick that things can go wrong in a split second!!
@@FirstAlarm59 or get out of a jet black hot basement 10 seconds before the whole first floor drops in it ( manufactured joists), or get of a flat top tar roof just as it disintegrates and the entire store is roaring below it. Oh the memories of the " good old days" 😁
Nice footage, even drone👍🏼👍🏽
Really great footage of the fireground. That place burned down fiercely. Wow.
Well....when you don't put the wet stuff on the red stuff......
@@seniorofficer9954 I noticed that as well, took a long time for water on that structure. Once they got started they did a great job. Drone shots were awesome. Place has not been touched since fire.
Salt airr/water does slow eating drying out wood
@@frankchris07 This is what happens when you let it get out of control. I've noticed the US FD spend a lot of time walking around, putting up ladders, breaking windows and making holes. In fact they do anything but put water on it.
They needed to mobilise the deck guns and the master streams far quicker to actually put the fire out before it was too late!
Right, no water. Huge fire
Within a month there will be a new structure fully operational, faster than most people can get permits to build
Has been for a while. They 3d print some houses now.
I really hate to arm chair strategies and tactics but what is the reason for delay in getting some kind of water on this fire and why aren't exposure (bravo) structure being priority once the ladder pipe started flowing???
Another awesome video
The small tornadoes within the fire on the right was interesting.
if youre on an active scene PUT YOUR DAMN GEAR ON
God bless and protect our first responders! Well done and everyone goes home!
Nice work young lad.
Nice effort pal 2:50
Used to be a great dept. New generation has no clue? That volume and type of fire, master streams and ladders/aerials which they have plenty of in the areas around.
Great job, cool video Did they have any extn. to any nearby structures ?? --- Debbie
Ladder pipes and tower ladder streams don't do squat - if you don't keep them moving. You're not filling a bucket, you supposed to be extinguishing fire.
Nice editing.
That fire was no picnic.
That is when u need a few airport crash trucks to respond
May not have been in the response area or M/A agreement but heck those things are beasts with a lot of water and foam.
So, is there heavy fire from the second floor?
That basement wasn't going to save itself, great job!
My Grandfather and Aunt both retired from Fire service. What is a second alarm? is it double the equipment and manpower? When is the Fire considered 2nd alarm? is there a 3rd alarm as well thank you for yourselfless service.
Every additional alarm generally gets an additional 4 engines 2 ladders 1 chief depending on the department
And yes there is a third alarm as well as a 4 5 6…
I just don´t understand one thing... so many units and only three lines??? later four but why was there only one line on the ground??? what were the others doing??
wow amazing job!
This building was lost before they (FD) arrived. The fire had a really good start in a fairly large building. The amount of water needed to extinguish this fire far exceeded what the FD could deliver. I don't know anything about this FD but from the video...they made it look good for the cameras. Hopefully the owners have insurance.
That's why the building was set on fire for the insurance money.
@@josephrobinson5452 I was just going to say it looked like arson to me.
No one was putting this out quick, a fire this big you are setting up for the long haul. Even with the aerials flowing 1,000-2,000gpm on this, it was barely putting a dent in it. This is a surround and drown, and even that's going to take a while
Good video guy! I love watching these and critiquing the fire department.
OMG the store is burning. Thats ok im just gonna put my hands in my pockets (12:00) and just chill out. I am so glad i live in Europe where firefighters actually run from fire trucks to put fire down ASAP and not just dragging their feet’s like pulling a truck behind them.
Presne ako píšeš.. hrozné hasenie...a stať s rukami vo vreckách..nenormalne..toto keby bolo v Európe tak koniec nemáme lesy atď..
was that ammo popping off inside?
sorry i missed that did you say "heavy fire on the second floor"? Gee
Lakewood ladder could use more experience and direction. The building is toast. stop sweeping everything and concentrate on the end next to the yet unburnt house.
I was in the middle of typing the same thing when I saw your comment. Its ridiculous that they let it burn that high for that long without ever looking at the house.
At least they were sweeping it rather than target one small area and achieving even less, although I was wondering when they would spot the house...
The siding on the house melted
did you say Point Boro on the scene?
My thanks goes out to the FD for your slow response on putting this fire out. I love watching the fire.
More than 8 minutes to get water on the fire. This seems to be a trend with this department.
1:38 mark water was being put on the fire
When even master streams aren't enough.
"TOP SHELF VIDEO" BROTHER ! 🇺🇸🙏
wow ... that is a hell of a fire. good work to all
Weird store. Would love to know the layout. First floor is the sales and upstairs storage? Why no employees there?
First floor is a grocery upstairs is a kitchen the fire started in the kitchen and there were no employees because this happened at 4:30 am
OUTSTANDING that you cover these jobs - well done !!
Incompetence and group-think VS a very manageable fire... Fire wins again.
This is what happens when you don't pay attention to the matzoh-brei simmering on the stove-top!
There's always something that could have gone better on these types of fires. But what's important here is they all went home to their families and hopefully no one got hurt. A building can be rebuilt but you can't bring back a life.
Finally someone with some decency and by the sounds of it some common knowledge. 💪🇺🇸
Thats no excuse to no aggressively attack the fire! They had like one line on it for way too long. Why the hell was the aerial there if they weren't going to use the stang?
I am not a firefighter, but it seems when I watch fire videos that getting water started should be priority #1. A lot of extra bodies wandering around with no apparent job. I appreciate my firefighters and I would hope that they might be a lot more concerned with getting water on the fire before it is totally beyond hope. Arson in lieu of making mortgage payments might have been involved here due to the accelerants that appear to have been used on the 2nd story.
@@DanEvan While I agree with most of your assessment no Insurance company would issue a policy to a commercial structure without having hydrants within a hundred feet. Most insurance companies would require a sprinkler system if there wasn't hydrants within the required parameters .
@@degrom542 Yes sir, and my point wasn’t so much the distant to hydrants or sprinkler systems as much as it was to paint the bigger picture of how watching something like this unfold on a video and critiquing those involved is nothing compared to being on scene. All the unknown variables, amount of complications, obstacles, fire conditions, combustibles inside the structure etc. etc. that the camera doesn’t show. Unless it’s just sheer negligence, lack of training, not knowing your job and executing, inability to problem solve and those elements are blatantly obvious, I just try to refrain from blaming the crews on scene from the comfort of my computer chair. I agree with everything you stated, but at the end of the day people will always cut corners and pinch pennies wherever they can, arson is never ruled out….I’m sure you understand what I was getting at, and you made multiple valid points.
@@DanEvan I 100 percent agree that fire was to intense for crews to go in and to set everything up even with full crews still takes a couple mins to fully get set
@@DanEvanwhat book did you find thid
@@markwitte9773 I don’t understand your question.
Wonder what the story is here how did it start she took off on them
Perhaps we should check back next week and see if they ever get some water out of that ladder truck.
Perhaps you should shut the hell up, it was a lost cause from moment one
ALOT OF FIRES DOWN THE JERSEY SHORE?? THE PLACE IS BURNING DOWN :o)
when they arrived on scene seen the fire breach the roof should automatically called for a 3rd alarm with 2 additional ladders or trucks
should of **
Should HAVE
Lakewood stopped upgrading alarms so fast they even had a ladder truck that was dispatched on the second alarm that they stupidly staged at the station even though they low on resources at this fire
Ladder truck took to long to get water on fire. That old fire chief needs to retire. Did nothing but take pictures
I am appalled at how slow and ineffective these firefighters are. It took so long for them to begin to shoot water at the fire. What good is all that VERY expensive equipment if the firefighters are going to drag along so slow. Just how long does it take to charge a hose and get water on the fire?????
I've watched literally dozens and dozens of these video's and no matter where the fire or fire department fighting them, all I see in the comment section are a lot of negatives. They should've done this, why are they doing that, this is a waste etc. etc. Anyone have a RUclips link to a video of a perfectly fought fire, I would love to see it where the Monday morning quarterbackers are silent?
P.S. - Let's face it, with that fire already ripping when they arrived, was any fire department in the world going to save that building?
Face it! They took their sweet time getting water to the fire.
... David Decker. . .
Not a shit show in hell stopping that fire, firefighter 17yrs
If you wanna see a great department work a fire call look at David decker videos from Ohio he is a cheif and has a great department and they do great work
Absolutely. Ban the know it alls or turn off comments and watch them go nuts.
.
Why the delay in getting the ladders spraying water?
Because Lakewood fd is slow
Remember the awesome TV show "Emergency!" where firefighters would rush to a fire, rush to look for civilians, and rush pulling hoses to put out the fire? Me too. The olden days.
...was reminding my Wife of that very same show recently, loved it!!
TV as opposed to reality. Learn it. Know it. Embrace the difference.
Chicago Fire also .. lolol alot of fire.. little INTERIOR smoke
Chicago Fire.. lots of flame inside, little smoke
@@johngoglia6981 Unfortunately too many people think this is what "Real Firefighters" encounter.
So the picnic came with a BBQ.
Thank you. I'll be here all night.
That picnic turned into a bbq.
Gotta cool down the engine adjacent to the structure since there's no collapse zone.
Quite a loss for Lakewood it would appear, hope they get to rebuild. Is it just me, or does it, after the pandemic some remodeling was going on?
Great video CPT Obvious
Tremendous job fire fighters.
Yeah! You lost the entire building!
🤣
The guy in command, should be fired!
Why should the Chief be fired?
Please explain
No direction and no lines battling the fire from the top and outside...then ladder went up but never came on to help fight the fire
How did it start? Was this a Grocery Store?
is protocol only use one hose to put out whole fire, seems to me to use more then one hose and you would get the job done quicker
I'll bet that was no picnic !
That looks like a fairly new building and it was fully involved long before the fire department arrival on scene. Don't you have building codes up there on the Jersey Shore? That may just save a life one day including firefighters.
It’s called ARSON for a reason….
Is this a controlled burn.
Another nice one Ryan!
Theres a couple time it looked like there was a little fire tornado. This looks intense. Oh my god..
that looked like no picnic I've seen before.
Nice video
Seems NJ shore has an awful lot of fires. With all the wooden structures so close together I’d want a better manned station.
There’s something called mutual aid and they relay on it a lot especially in ocean county
It would help to calm the fire down if they had some water being shot inside the store on the ground
They did that, they had a 2½ facing the store once the ladders were in place
I'm sure they had some hand lines inside.
The fire wasn't on the ground, it was on things above the ground. Just spanking water in on the floor doesn't do jack unless its a wood floor with a basement already involved.
@@janetclark3557 not inside.
Another expert video F.F. nice.
"Heavy fire from the second floor" .... must say it 10 times !!!
Permits, shermits, just wire the place! OOOY VEH!
I think you can safely call this one a goner
the tower on the right doesn't seem to be participating, just pouring water on the same spot.
What’s the under and over that the kid taking the video is the one who set these fires?
Probably pretty low if I was setting them I think I’d have more videos to post..
Criticize all you want but they weren't going to stop that fire all they could do was control it from burning the next buildings down
An incredible amount of flames belching out of that building.
That tower wasn’t doing squat!
Doesn’t seem like anyone is in a hurry to put water on this building, no sense of urgency. Why waste an opportunity to take cool pictures of millions of dollars of equipment
Why does it always take so long to get water out of these "parade pieces"? And dont jump all over me, we practiced repeatedly set up, and master stream flowing in under 3 minutes! So my expectations are reasonable!
Well we left the fire service 20 years ago. We were asked to come back and help our fire company who was struggling with everything. Never in my life did I witness pure stupidity, lying, cheating and total disrespect. They chased all the good firemen away. First night back I said to them there is something wrong with your pumper tanker. No there's not they said. I said the trruck is not sitting in it chassis right. Oh they laughed at me. They put different size tires on the truck. 3/4 of the pump panel didn't work. So I went home and told my husband who was chief and chief engineer for years before.. We had the other township ompanies respect. These guys are known as the bozo squad. My hubby said the same thing I did there's something wrong with that truck. So we brought in a guy who specializes in repairing trucks. Hec said the original filters were on the truck. A 35 year old truck. The truck got sent to a body specialist. The guy said this truck should be junked. It was literally falling off its frame. It could have the wheels fall off to. The suspension was also bad. $30,000 later the truck was safe to use again. The pump issues were fixed at a cost of #12,000. New brakes all around to.. They didn't know how the truck stopped. The engine was just as bad but that had to wait because they were near broke. My hubby and i tried to run hall rentals to make money. Our only fund raiser. We had alot on Puerto Ricans rent the hall. They harassed them because of their race. Chief said the only good Pa is abdead one. They are racist bigots. We left after 2 years. They are purchasing a $800.000 pumper tanker. No income but what the township gives them. They said we are not doing fundraiser let the township residents taxes go up. They once sank the PT, we ent to calls drunk , were on the scene without gear on. One of them b tried to run me ov r r in b the firehall lot. If a girl wouldn't have grabbed me and pulled me out of the way he would have hit me. I was cursed at b there as tened etc. They think thry now it all but dont now squat. Thry are dangerous. They have a 500lb fireman. Um no I tried to get him to stop running calls until he got in better shape. They are all super fat and out of shzpe. Any call I was at with them they all had to go to the rehab tent. One 30 year old fireman was dating a 16 year old junior member. Um nope no way. But b daddy deares who is a scum bag let him date her. That's the reality of these pigs. We left after 2 years. I wasn't losing everything we worked for because of those guys stupidity. So yeah someone needs to wake up. Tge reality of it is some
fire companies are untrained idiots.
You don’t have a pre connect deck gun ?
@@cynthiaarnold5807 Don't hold back, Ms. Arnold. Tell us how you really feel about them. LOL!
@@cynthiaarnold5807 Sad to hear it. Unfortunately, problems like that usually start at the management level so they are hard to get rid of.
Just loved the ornament ladder truck ? Was it just for show ?
What a place for a Picnic!
I found that camera shot of the fireman smoking a cigarette funny. 😂
That deck gun at the beginning on the right was shooting over the roof line doing very little when they had a open window they could have direct the water right into the structure and done some good.
They had a hand line in the window
@@mark7bearcat766 They can't do both? Deck gun puts out a heck of a lot more water than a hand line. Deck gun shooting over the fire and roof does no good
@@gtbproductions1 the best attack is when you can get water on the fire from two angles the deck gun hitting the roof is putting out the fire it’s sort of like a mini master stream
