Guitar performance and guitar tab for, Longing, by Gustavo Santaolalla, from The Last of Us Part II.
This arrangement combines both Longing and Longing (Redemptions) from The Last of Us Part II soundtrack. The latter of which is played on a Ronroco (a tiny, 5 string Andean guitar) that Gustavo Santaolalla employs throughout his soundtracks. Both pieces comprise his trademark minimalism; reliance open space between the notes to invoke a deeper sense of meaning.
I'm also realizing that 15 takes to get a perfect performance is overkill - even detrimental to spirit of a guitar performance. When listening to Longing with a good set of headphones (I highly recommend it) you can here Santaolalla's chair creaking. He even gulps at one point. It all lends it self to a close, human experience. He might as well be playing two feet away from you.

Fun fact: I finally decided to start playing guitar because of the soundtrack from the first game. I'm from Argentina and really loved some of Santaolalla's music already, but that one really hit me and I actually bought my first guitar soon after I finished the game. I found your videos on how to play a couple of those songs, so those are the first songs I learned, and never stopped since. It's been quite a ride so far.

3 Days since i finished the game. Still can't get it over my head. Only NaughtyDog can do this. Game had sad ending but damn it was worth the time and money.

Loving these songs. I remember around 2016 discovering TLOU1 and I fell in love with the soundtrack.i started playing guitar because of a girl, but it wasn’t until I heard Gustavo’s OST that I actually learned how to play. I had a 3 year relationship with that girl... she left me in the most horrendous way possible. It’s funny how the first soundtrack is what I used to play. A soundtrack filled with seriousness yet hope, that’s what I felt with my girlfriend. And now I find myself playing the second games soundtrack. A more melancholic and somber tone.
That’s how I feel now... I knew she wasn’t the one when I played “The Choice” by Gustavo, without missing a single note and playing it perfectly, and she just said “It’s good, I guess”. Yet I still went on with our relationship, thinking there would still be hope.
Right now she’s happy with someone else, i guess. And I’m just here... playing these depressing and somber songs.
I think it’s the only thing keeping me going.

Yeah but alot of people got/get sad not because the story makes you feel those emotions, but because the creative choices are just dissapointing

New Sanataolla music is a gift, and so is new work from you. Finished the game a week ago and I'm still not emotionally whole, but I'm definitely going to have to play around with some of your arrangements to heal the pain, haha. Outstanding work as always, dude. :)
Also, knowing how much you enjoy "The Choice" (my personal favorite piece from the first game), I can't wait to see your take on "Allowed To Be Happy," that one uses such a similar structure to create a different sound and I adore it.

Hi Amit, I'm not a gamer. Nothing against it, I'm just always playing guitar as my recreation. I've only ever seen stills of the game, and I loose understanding of the premise/plot.
Thanks as always for the kind words. I've inhabited Santaolalla's guitar style for a long time. I can tell you The Last of Us music is *not my favorite work by GS. My favorites in order are:
1. Brokeback Mountain
2. The Motorcycles Diaries
3. Biutiful
4. Babel
5.Things We Lost in the Fire
6. August: Osage County
Brokeback and Diaries are mindblowing. They're the reason for my RUclips Channel and blog. They inform all of my guitar playing and musical ethos.
While I'm at it. My favorite score of all time is, The American, by Herbert Gronemeyer. Great film too.
