    You can't make everyone happy. If his groove was perfect someone would say he's boring if he chops a lot someone will say he has no groove smh blah blah he could do whatever he wants on the kit whenever he wants I respect that. Play what you want Tony make yourself happy for the talent God and God alone gave you

    Drumming is an amazing talent to have, as is anyone who can play an instrument..I'm an average drummer, but i love playing and learning and progressing. Watching guys like Tony just spark that energy to want to play and get better. Just love the craft that these people have, don't hate don't judge, just enjoy. If you are true lover of drumming and drummers, then that's exactly what these video's will do for you.

      Yeh Drumming is very much fun, but I mostly just help my mum & niece to get good at Drums, but open mic has so many people who get Angry & want to become good at everything as well. The only way they will get good at anything U do weather it's drumming playing video games or drawing on paint in windows XP & windows 7 or making music in MTV from ripped cds. Is to love what U do even fixing computer's. So if U keep doing what U love & have passion for. Nothing can stop U from Real Gifts & Talent's...

      Even if somebody has some criticism, and you can criticize something about anybody, there are only a handful of people on the entire planet who I would consider better. There are very few people who are faster. He’s got some great shops and fills, though I think there are others, even some who are not even really in his technical league, who have a lot more musicality.

    For all the haters, I'm an average drummer and always Thank God for giving me a talent I loved since I was a child hood but just thought I never had it in me ,where i learned on my own maybe learned a few individual beats from 1 or 2 people the rest has been practice,and finding my own style and still being able to fit it in to different music styles, no classes, no special school, none of that just grew up watching people and getting a bit better, never took it serious to be a professional just play for church and do it for the Glory of God, so if u find technical errors, critique this man when hes been doing this for years you really gotta be a hater!!! The best part about being a drummer is the mistakes and errors and to be able to find it in you and find the right timing to get right bak on it Tony is a Master and still really young hes prooven himself and many will hate just because this kid is humble and let's his sticks do the talking either way all I can say is he has inspired many but a few will always find something to talk about against him nothing new🤔🤔🤔/😉😉😉

    When you've proven yourself as a pocket master, you can splurge on chops.
    Tony is MORE than able to stay in the pocket, so why not let him have some fun? Seems like the audience is enjoying it!

    • @DrumChannelJunior
      @DrumChannelJunior 8 лет назад +6

      A good drummer can stay in pocket, a fit drummer can chop. A great drummer can express. Sorry, Tony's a boss at chops and is as tight as a metronome but he may as well be a computer. It sounds like a drum kit on a key board and someone's just holding down some of the buttons. It's all singles and fast ones

      +Gregor Wlliamson think I heard a few doubles... Either way. The dude IS a machine. Can't hate on Tony.

    • @DrumChannelJunior
      @DrumChannelJunior 8 лет назад +1

      +Stephen Vumbaco there were here and there but they were only thrown in to give the illusion of continues doubles. Yeah I've got nothing against tony. Top guy and top of his league but it's people who then claim him to be god like at drums. He's not even close to the best at playing a lot but he's real damn good for big R and B concerts

    • @Surfacetoairproductions
      @Surfacetoairproductions 8 лет назад

      +Gregor Wlliamson it is a solo man this is him expressing himself on his kit. Maybe he's not one of the greats in your eyes but there is denying his skill. The dynamics are there just nothing crazy like Benny ect. Ect. There's always stuff that's harder to get for some drummers. Maybe it's dynamics for him. He's good at what he's good at and I've heard a couple great drummers say " get it where you fit in" and he does.

    Everyone's entitled to an opinion right? I gotta echoe nycjin816's words somewhat. Its very easy to sit back and analyze, search for cracks in the foundation, split hairs, search for any and every flaw of an individual that is beast mode in any field if you yourself aren't at that level. It seems to come natural to those looking in to critique someone at the level of say, a Tony Royster who by the way, is on another level like it or not. This is a world class drummer, & at this point I suppose he has nothing to prove; he is in his early 30's & still evolving. You can pick a flaw out of any top player but it doesn't change the game. When you mention Dave Weckl's name, you get arguments from both sides of the sphere ( killer drummer vs no feel, stiff time ) but there is no doubt he has achieved legendary status & he has already gone down in history as 1 of the greatest drummers of all time. He also said something that may provoke thought: MD 1998- "Some use the whole 'I don't need technique' thing as an excuse not to work at their craft". So I'll add to that if I may : If you can't play a complex part then you rip the next dude that can. Don't just play but practice & study your art form. Music to me is not chops for the sake of 'look at me' moments. Its about one's feel, mood, interpretation, creativity, soul, fire and dare I say 'pocket' as Mintah stated.

  • @LilDrummer1213
    @LilDrummer1213 8 лет назад

    Anyone that wants to hate on Tony needs to re-watch this and decide if they can actually do half the crap he does. Any drummer can learn to groove, but having the discipline to carry out technical difficulties with different odd time signatures and rythms like Tony as well as having the chops he has is a different ball game.

    • @DrumChannelJunior
      @DrumChannelJunior 8 лет назад

      To chop you must exercise. To play you must practise. Anyone can do what tony is doing given a certain level of strength and basic time keeping. It's not remarkable what he's doing other than he works out a lot for it

    • @LilDrummer1213
      @LilDrummer1213 8 лет назад

      +Gregor Wlliamson I agree however I would say exercizing is a part of practicing and overall, is more difficult than other areas of practice, i.e. grooving.

      +Rob Pierce Youre making these claims on a drumming video. A video that will be watched by many drummers. To assume no one commenting could do something similar is ignorant as fuck. Ive been drumming for 30+ years. There is not a single segment of this solo that was up to Tony's typical level. Im also not insecure enough to be baited into recording a video to seek your approval. This solo just straight up wasnt what I would expect from him. Period.

      the are 2 types of drummers who go on RUclips....the guys that wanna be educated and inspired by great players and the other guys that wanna prove that their musical opinion is more knowledgeable than someone elses....pretty sad that I'm seeing more critics than artists and musicians around these necks....

    This video was obviously not about trying to sound good. He was also displaying the level of difficulty that he could play off timing. for the negative comments. this means musically mentally you are not at the level to comprehend the video and understand its purpose. if you want a nice groove with tasteful chops over the top of it that sounds good. he was doing that when he was 5 years old. I'm sure he gets paid to pay play basic grooves all the time by jay z. and for those of you who said he lost the beat. NOT! he was going off the cuff adlibbing. you cannot do that many off beat chops and not be a master at keeping timing. he practices time signatures that you didn't even know existed like 7/11 or 5/9. Tony wouldn't lose the beat if he got hit by a Mack truck. it's a reason he's doing shows all over the world and you are sitting here commenting on it. bye

    lol at everyone who is like "if you criticize him then I CHALLENGE YOU to do better". I personally love Tony and have followed him since I started drumming over 10 years ago but to be quite honest it looked like he wasn't on his A game. And as far as I know its to be expected form time to time. Hes a busy guy and a lot of times has to learn the material for his gigs that he does huge tours with. If you are stuck playing the same things over and over then ya you might get a little sloppy. Thats just how it is. Hes still awesome and I don't doubt in the least that if he tried he could come back even better than before. I mean in this video he just looked a little out of it. Maybe he was tired who knows. Hes a drummer not a god.

      please elaborate on what he played was sloppy? sounded clean as hell. maybe a few double bass drum rolls weren't perfect, but it's nothing to criticize. the fact that you criticize his playing and finding tiny faults instead of praising this amazing display of talent says a lot about you .

      +Andrew Smith oh yeah what does it say?

    • @Ephremjlm1
      @Ephremjlm1 8 лет назад

      +Andrew Smith okay let me come off a different way. the basic point which you don't seem to understand is that it's okay to identify someone better than you as not playing as well in a specific session or up their potential. It actually shows maturity and the level of the player if they can actually understand what they are hearing and that includes mistakes. Such as inconsistencies in groves, or random fills to cover mess ups etc. And again I'm not saying I'm better or even as good but also to those actually criticizing the guy, he is only human and clearly looked a bit more tired and it's to be expected for someone of his level and someone who tours and records consistently. a lot of people at that level even admit to not practicing for skill anymore because they have to learn so much other material for gigs. so before you criticize others please analyze a situation to it's fullest and understand the perspective of what others speak.

    Tony Royster really is a great drummer. Myself personally. I prefer to hear him stay in the pocket when he plays, because his chops are chaotic. They don't have much fluidity and they sound rushed. Listen to great modern day drummers/clinicians like Chris Coleman, Benny Grebb and you hear the difference in their chops. Chris Coleman is fast, but fluid. Tony is a seasoned drummer. Pro since he was like 13 years old I think and has only gotten better, but he does have his weaknesses. When it comes to chops he sounds like Thomas Pridgeon. Just kind of everywhere like he's struggling through them. Hey but who am I to speak on these guys quality as drummers when I couldn't even light a candle to them as musicians. I am just a working class business owner that loves to sit down behind the drums and loose myself when I get home.
