I love how they pull off 15 minutes of battling back and forth, sometimes seeming to be at complete odds with competing time signatures or playing intentionally off-time solos as the other keeps a perfect backbeat. But it was the ending that really got me. There is a moment at the last minute where they go from chaos to perfect synchronicity, very abuptly they begin playing EXACTLY the same thing as they approach the finale. Howwwww??? Amazing!
Brought a huge fuck-off smile to my face watching both sides of the human coin banging out impossible beats! What dexterity, ingenuity, and sheer creativity. Many, many thanks for posting this gem. Paradoodle day!
Guys. These are two very different drummers but both unfathomably great in many categories. They're literally improving and trading ideas together. They're 100% not competing.
Absolutely the most professional, entertaining groove I've seen. It's extremely apparent Lang is phenomenal, but having seen Tony before, it's even more apparent Tony's holding back. Admittedly bias, Tony is my favorite drummer. However, that doesn't take away from the talent and musical entertainment perspective. Most people often misinterpret talent for presentation (like saying "Portnoy is the best, ever"- awesome, but not quite this caliber). These two clearly demonstrate the utmost talent, professionalism for each other, and pure entertainment value! Gospel Chops will show you TRUE, ruthless, embarrassing, no-holds-barred, bragging rights drumming, if you happen to disagree with my analysis....
Thomas toms are always tuned to perfection, at least to my kind of taste. Damn, brings me back to the first video of Thomas that I saw for the first time. You still got it man, and by that I mean that you actually GOT IT!! Rosyter, always fun to see him play aswell, them DW practicekit videos man, and the first video of you that got viral blew my mind aswell. Wow...!
I don't believe either drummer cut loose. both are great however I have two words for those who want to see and hear the total extreme in every way... VIRGIL DONATI!
What I like with Virgil Donati is that he uses more rests in his solos, which adds a kind of class and makes him sound very special. That is the only suggestion I would make to Thomas Lang (if I really had one; so perfect he already is) : fewer notes, and more rests. For sure he would also create mind blowing solos with fewer notes.
It's healthy to compare drummers but the real musicians among us know that every drummer and I mean every drummer has strengths and weaknesses. Some have less of more. But there is no best drummer. Steve Gadd can make a basic beat sound better than both these drummers put together but he wouldn't be able to compete with Thomas's technicality or Jnr's energy. But he is one of the great drummers in his own right. Then I can go into composition and there are hundreds of drummers that can write a better beat to a song than anyone else
Good stuff! Both great players! I will never understand people's opinions of most drummers with technique "can't groove"!? It's always the players pushing the envelope! In my opinion I think it's jealousy! And... it's ok to like someone more than another but to make Blind Faith Fan statements like-"no one's better than Tony" or "No ones better than Thomas"! Your right! Your opinion! I like both these players equally! They're not my favorites but I know they're faster and more technical than my favs! Every generation of drummers,as far as progressive Music, has raised the bar. Granted Buddy raised the bar so hi a long time ago! People are still trying to catch up with Buddy!; Billy Cobham,Buddy Rich,Steve Gadd, Elvin Jones, Vinnie Coliauta and Steve Smith, Kenny Clark and Tony Williams..... Without these drummers there would be no Thomas Lang or Tony Royster Jr.
Well said man. This to me was two amazing drummers using their technique appropriately with focus on performance, groove and entertainment. I totally enjoyed this. For some people to have watched this and thought it was some kind of fight to the death, you have missed the point of this performance. Both players held back and both players took the lead at times. Oh to have an ounce of these guys skill and talent.
They both have there stuff. One one is better than the other just different. If you think one is better than the other than I guess you think jazz is better music cause it's more complex. Again not better just different. Respect to every pro, amateur, and beginner.
This was all about the groove. Some absolutely amazing work by both. Watch their faces and you will see them both smiling and looking at each other. This was about jamming together... not just pushing the speed and technical skills. Amazing
Agree, but from what I’m seeing DW is also the company willing to dump the most money into sponsoring these kind of things - maybe one of only a few who can at this point.
There's plenty of to notch drummer's using Tama and Sonor kits to this day, Sput Searight just for one name drop who plays Tama but so many others in his playing level use Tama and Sonor too! Yes the most kits used are DW first then Tama second which is my favorite and what I own and then Sonar third. My favorite brand's among those are Tama first, Sonor a close second and DW a far third place. Not trying too on DW but I honestly don't like the sound of there drums but DW does make great hardware I'll give them that! Tama's hardware is the best in my opinion still though then DW!✌
For some weird reason I enjoy this a lot. I´m not a huge fan of mr. Langs style or these kinds of battles or what ever this is, but this jam brings the best (well maybe not the best, but very good:) out of these drummers I think. And there´s some very cool grooves there also.
i ve been to the wood chopper tour just insane!! talked a little bit to Tony. Such a nice and kind guy. we had a good converstion. Thomas was a a little cocky to be honest
Going on a limb here but I think that TL gets some dislike b/c he has the technical/speed part down so ridiculously well. I gather he's put in insane amounts of time developing that stuff. But I don't see how that should take away from his 'caliber' with regard to feel, groove, etc....a lot of which is (still) evident here. And he appears to be a good guy who is not full of himself. Why he isn't in a prog band, I'm not sure. Yeah, the speed stuff isn't always my thing (for sure) but not Buddy Rich's solos were pretty much a machine gun hand show. PS, at around 9:40 they 'square off' a bit on the speed thing and TL's technique is mint where TRJr. starts to throw some arm muscle in there.
My top 2 drummers finally groove together! Awesome vid
Wow, I've never heard two mamoths groove out at that level, normally with these guys the chops take over. This has some amazing beats.
I couldn't help but smile before the video even started, I knew it would be some kind of epic with these two!
Love how even amazing greats need a minute or two to warm up and flow. Puts humanity into this incredible work
I love how they pull off 15 minutes of battling back and forth, sometimes seeming to be at complete odds with competing time signatures or playing intentionally off-time solos as the other keeps a perfect backbeat. But it was the ending that really got me. Because they are playing the head to Spain, a tune by Chick Corea.
Both Thomas and Tony were holding back for the sake of music! I'm getting chills!!!
Before I even watch this. I have to say that these 2 drummers are my all time favorite. I'm sorta speechless at what I'm about to see. FN A.
Chris Coleman, Thomas Lang and Tony Royster Jr. These 3 are my all time favorite drummers.
You no like Eric Moore?
2 of my favorite drummers of all time together!!!!
The displacement grooves starting at 13:40 are sick.
so dam groovy and musical perfect performance by both. one of the best collaborations I've seen.
so sweet to see actual masters working off each other.. insane, they're both holding back but still matching each other versatility, epic.
These are two of the best drummers in the world. Matt garstka is pretty insane too, but imo Thomas Lang is the best, most well rounded, and passionate
virgil donati is pretty fuckin nuts. If for nothing else but his ability to split his left and right limbs into completely separate grooves
Other than the late Great Buddy Rich,, Sonny Emory is the best drummer I've ever seen!!!
Id throw Larnell Lewis in the conversation for best in the world as well.
@@FootmasterSeattle best single foot player for sure
Unlike Thomas Lang who plays like a robot, Larnell Lewis and Sonny Emory are among the most musical top drummers
Two of the most bad ass drummers on the planet. Great vid and thx for the share.
I feel so lucky to be able to watch this. Thank you!
2 Great Drummers and 2 great ambassadors for Drumming, Awesome!
These two are absolute beasts. To play at this level you have to be at peak physical condition and masters of technique.
God bless the technicians for the phones we have and recording devices in our pockets. That as butter clean
Man, I was just thinking the other day, that I would love to see Thomas and Tony Do a drum off. Great job!!!
Brought a huge fuck-off smile to my face watching both sides of the human coin banging out impossible beats! What dexterity, ingenuity, and sheer creativity. Many, many thanks for posting this gem. Paradoodle day!
Smashed it with this comment mate! Totally agree
Just two well respected, extremely talented drummers having fun.
So Musical. Pleasure to watch. Lovely sounding kits . DW 👍🏻
LANG is a monster!
That was Great, & Extreme Mode, Keep On Rocking. Amazing Legend's & Empire's..........
Guys. These are two very different drummers but both unfathomably great in many categories. They're literally improving and trading ideas together. They're 100% not competing.
Dois bateristas fenomenais, excepcionais, e o mais bonito de se ver é o IMENSO RESPEITO que há entre eles.

Two AMAZING musicians
There Both Awesome
I could listen to that all day.
Human drum machines in sync at a glance. Awesome
Thomas Lang é incrível.
Insane talent hats off to the drum godz!
These guys are amazing on the drums

Drumming heaven!
Both drummers unbother by each other
THIS IS GOLD!!!
the meet of two monsters of drumming technique just blowing
Tony is simply the best!
I´ve seen both of them play far better in other videos, but they looked like they were having fun, and that´s what it´s all about.
2 of the 4 top drummers in the world!!
Sempre sonhei em ver isso! hahaha. Duas de minhas maiores referências.
thomas lang is out of this world
"Cool".... Nice to see that. Two Great Players.
Sólo Maestría 👍👏👏👏Saludos desde San Felipe Chile ✌

Que dinamica increveu entre esses dois icones da Drums
Beautiful

thnx for this one...!!!
Tony was so groovy, tigh and clean thomas was fast and energetic.. Both of them are great and awesome!
2 masters!👌🏻😝
Lang is such a freaking monster at subdivision......he's holding back so hard....gentleman.
Yea right. He wasn’t holding back. Tony just ate his lunch and made him fold. 💪🏾
Holding back? Do you know who Tony Royster Jr. Is?
🤣🤣🤣🤣Tony is formidable my uneducated fellow

Well done!! A DUET instead of a DUEL.
the best duo)
A tonny royster jr no le supera ni Diosssss💪👌👋👋👋👋
Top, muito respeito envolvido
The intro Vamp is taken from "Spain", int's it?
Genial este par!
Oh man that syncopation between the two is amazing. That groove at 3:52 is the sh!t!!!
That was surprisingly good!
Kristoffer Lysgaard Ⓥ Why was it surprising they are the two best drummers in the world
THOMAS your the best.

Nicholas S. lol wut
That was magic
2:24 mind blowing royster
There both Very Great Drummer's!! But i love watching them doing separate solo's...
2 of my favorites of all time would love to see them with my no 1 favorite drummer Mike the master Mangini omg
Tony Royster and Mike Mangini are the best living drummers.
@@jamieseiple what about Gavin Harrison?
OMG!!!! These guys are from outer space!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow! Holy shit! and Wow!
De bought are wonderful wow bad guys
After Buddy, came the theacher Tony Royster Jr. Respect.
It sounds like one person is playing. It's pretty well done, artistic!!! Yeah!!!
Thomas Lang Junior!
Tommy Longer Junior XD
Tony Royster JuniLOL x))
This is possibly one of the best drum set duets ever. Add Jojo Mayer and it will be like Weckl, Gadd and Colaiuta all over again.
es impresionante
These guys are so phrnominal It's like listening to the Royster and Lang of drumming...
Watching Lang hold back so much kills me.
I was thinking the same thing about royster. But this was more of a groove conversation. Soooo I get why they didn't go crazy
Both are holding back for the sake of music. Awesome!
they are both great masters. Both of them holding back.

Ribsletics same with tony. FUUUCK.
...that's Spain at the end haha...nice video!!!
Imagine these two as the drummer for Almond brothers band
that rim part was awesome
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!
Sensacional.
Would like to see another brand played for a change...everything is DW these days,
Roy Beckerman agree. 80’s 90’s it was either Tama or Yamaha that got all the exposure
Agree, but from what I’m seeing DW is also the company willing to dump the most money into sponsoring these kind of things - maybe one of only a few who can at this point.
I think everyone forgot that Ludwig existed and had really great hardware for a while cause now they dont even make half of it anymore.
They both signed with dw....
There's plenty of to notch drummer's using Tama and Sonor kits to this day, Sput Searight just for one name drop who plays Tama but so many others in his playing level use Tama and Sonor too! How to own a stage. Thanks for the post.

Joe1839 absolutely, i agree with you man )) Lang just have technique , but in musical way he not so good as Royster, i think
Genios
Класс!Всегда мечтала так играть
Let me just go ahead and like that video before it even hits 5 seconds !!
anyone else realize they played Al Jarreau - Spain to start and end the drum duo ? :)
yup. me too
There are dozens of rhythmic references there.
Chick corea ;)
