- I never like teaching licks unless there’s some fundamental background along with them. Here’s two that have that. These two ideas are tied directly to chord shapes and chord tones. You can never go wrong with that approach. Enjoy!

Guthrie Trapp
My father inlaw was a blue collar upstate NY country western "bubba". He passed about three years ago. He was 80. He was always in a country western style band, "Country Roads" from the first time I ever met him. "Country Roads" dissolved because these guys started getting old and moving away to places like Tennessee and North Carolina and such. After that he continued to hang with his bar buddies and kept on playing mostly pedal steel .. And some of those dudes just up and died without any intention of doing so. My Father-in-law being one of them. His name was Henry Emiel Schell. Boy, Guthrie, he honest to God would have loved you.
Thank you for sharing that story. I'm from Western New York, and currently residing in upstate NY.
I am very grateful to have discovered, as you said, quite a country western influence and scene over here. It's great.
And as you said Guthrie's hard not to love. I took one private lesson with him about four years ago, and it set me on a new course, and helped change my guitar playing life forever!
God Bless you, and may your father in law and his buddies all rest in peace. 🙏

Eternally grateful that someone on Guthrie's level takes the time to make these lessons. We're so incredibly fortunate to live in an age where we can learn this directly from players like him, at such convenience.
the more I watch you, the more I contemplate hanging my guitars on the wall and take up knitting 😅 thanks for the lesson
i soooo want to be able to play like that .. I ve been playing for 30 yrs .. You are very inspiring.. I ll buy that album
G T , don't spend a fortune on good Italian wine ! Get you a Jug of Paisano by Carlo Rossi , a gallon is about 15 bucks ,thats the shit ,drink at room temp ,thats what we Goomba 's drink with dinner ,we call it Ginnie red enjoy it ! Thanks for the videos ! You the man bro , next time I get to music city I'll try to find where your playing, Thanks again!
Thanks for the inspiration to keep improving and taking things I do know to the next level and opening up the dominant sound. Very much appreciate the Free youtube lessons. I'll be getting into the Artistworks video exchange.
that opening intro has so many ideas in that short period it's insane - this is hours of material
I only rewatched the into like 10 times lol
You can hear and see the many many years that went into the amazing level Guthrie plays at. So impressive 🎶
Even if you only learn one thing from this video thats great. Just have fun with this. There’s only one GT
I've been playing about 2 years and I love it, but I can't play any licks yet. How long is it roughly before you can start playing them?
one of favorite lessons so far thanks
Man alive… that simple little 7th trick is life changing. Thank you sir. I am a huge fan of your channel. More of those little tricks please. Lol. 👍🇨🇦
Love these licks and theory dive.
Very 😎
And, that Tele is totally working…for me that is.
16:36 pretty perfect picking mr G. Fantastico.
Rollin rollin rollin! Frickin awesome! Thanx GT !
Jeff Skunk Baxter with early Steely was so good with this stuff. Lovely playing GT
Guthrie Your my favorite guitarist rn
This is the kind of lesson I love. This is a weeks worth or more of practice and I always “ discover” how these new things connect to something else. Always aha moments after your lessons. I really appreciate it.
What a great video. He gives me so much to work on. Priceless.
Appreciate the great lesson and mountain of ideas GT! I get this epiphany after watching you play certain things and it starts to makes sense ….after I try it a hundred times or so!
Man bro very happy I invested in your true fire course. Mambo Cheeks and Pick Piece my favorite. Cheers 🍻
Yeah...he gives it all away in that TrueFire course. Pick Piece is amazing...I really dig his stuff on the Rhumba groove too...totally ridiculous. Should keep us guitar players busy for a long, long time. 😅
New licks are how we overcome boredom with our playing, thanks!
Oh my gosh, I’m gonna learn this stuffffff 🎉😮
@officialGuthrieTrapp1 no you scammer
Legendary guitarist across a bunch of genres. Nice dude, too
GOOD GRAVY!!!!! THANKS GUTHRIE FOR POSTING!!
Great video Guthrie - these ideas will keep me busy for awhile - heard you mention Nantucket gig - my wife and I have a little place out there - hope you got to enjoy it while you were there🎸😎
Stratto sent me ...he was right man you can play just fantastic. Just subscribed
Absolutely fantastic lesson. Relatively easy shapes, and so much fun learning to move them around. And I really improved at something you never mentioned once---hybrid picking! You are a fountain of knowledge, super-generous with sharing it!
Ur a beast bro. Greetings from Pensacola Fla. we sure r proud of you around here. We got the boxing great Roy Jones Jr. and a bad ass guitar player in you. Not to shabby Lol please keep the videos coming there my favorite.
Thank you for helping me to get it! I get it. Thank you.
Are you a Paesano?
Love what you're doing!!
Keep drinking that vino rosso Trapp!
Thanks Gman , you just shared huge pearls for free from your extensive experience. As a 68 year old guitarist this was huge hermano. Greatful!
Killer licks man. Tele sounds great to me.
Damn, that’s a university degree in music right there .
Much gratitude Mr Guthrie
Dang that sounds sweet. That guitar is really chimey sounding love it!
This is brilliant, GT!! Would LOVE to see some more input on that right hand technique. Your timing is un-freakin'-believable! Thank you for all of this sharing, man. ❤
Thanks so much for breaking these licks down for a tin ear like mine. This lesson is gold !!
Guthrie, you give away so much great free stuff! But I still encourage all of you to try out the True Fire Courses!
Thanks a million Mr GT, you have served up a huge helping of things to learn and work on. Coming from one of the greats is very generous of you.
Nice to see the Floyd tele back in business
Man those pedal steel licks are sweet! Need to spend some time with that section.
Oh I’m liking where this one is headed
Thank you for this lesson! So much cool, useful stuff. The last section where you slide your pinkie repeatedly is particularly good for me to drill on bc my little finger thinks it's a toe. Getting more coordinated by the hour tho, thank you!
Wow this was great! I even managed to play some of it! Thanks.
Best episode. "That's some honky tonk shit!" You gotta make T-shirts.
Your awesome GT, thank you for the inspiration!
Always thankful for more GTrapp vocabulary lessons.
Dear Guthrie I'm a BAROLO man as well. May I recommend when you need a good table wine at home with a steak, roasted chicken, or just roasted vegetables try a Nebbiolo (Barolo is made from Nebbiolo as you know) - however instead of $50-120 a bottle you can do great with one for like $23-26 (Langhe Nebbiolo) - of course like Barolo needs breathing time. Warning can be lots of bottle variation - you buy one and go back and get another at your purveyor, and it tastes totally different. Usually worth the trip. Rock on brother ❤ Oh before I forget - I've been buying cuts from Porter Road in Kentucky but I understand they have a shop in East Nashville true or not? (maybe distributor/partner) 🔥
Great lesson - got a lot out of it. Thank you!
Great lesson! Dayum son. I like the way you challenge us to do some work on our end. I’ve learned so much. Thank you.
I was just commenting on your new blues video yesterday how IMO one sign of a great guitar player is if they can play many different styles well. Then I today you are playing country and playing it great-yesterday it was the blues. It really made me really laugh when during the video you paused and said " Now thats some real honky tonk Sh*# right there ! Maybe a good song title or lyric?-LOL. :-)
About 5 minutes he gets to musical stuff.. fast forward to get to the point .. but we he gets to it? really good stuff here! Nice vid man!
That's the stuff right there! 🙏👏
Great stuff GT. Thanks for your generosity
Another gem of a lesson full of practical useful ideas. Cheers🙏
Love that 0:04 lick, very Ry Cooder-ish!
Man Guth… this is an effing good lesson!
@officialGuthrieTrapp1 I’ll text you on your cell
This guy is freaking awesome
Great lesson as always and glad to hear you’re finding that healthy balance 💪💪
Glad to see the Floyd in action!!!
The pickups in this guitar are pure gold!!!
@@Sammywhat something about it just always sounds better to me !
More amazing stuff, golden nuggets very inspiring. Thanks for keeping it real and being just down to earth so relatable. Greatthat things are rocking for you too! Another awesome video
Smooth
I feel your pain. I've owned my 89 American Standard Strat since 89 and the frets are shot but I freak out and go into convulsions at the thought of it being messed with. As always, fantastic video. You're awesome bro!
Useful lesson. Thank you.😊
Amazing.
Another good one GT ................your killing it👍
Boy you betta play THAT...
So much good stuff in here! Looks like I've got some things to work on this week. Thank you!
00:10- 00:13 ... wow, made me do a happy laugh the voicings are so cool. Love you playing. Your straight talk about guitar playing has improved my playing x2 ... Thank you! peace, Richey
Unreal chops G
Awesome! Thank you GT!!
That's supar Cool and sooo Honky Tonk! Thanks GT
Thanks always appreciated.
I’ve never thought of going from an E to E7 before. Seen it in some songs but have never thought about constructing it in a lead this way.
GT IS AMAZING !!!
"This guitar is quite not happening"...while he is playing some of the best country licks ever!😂😲
That was spectacular!
That guitar. ❤❤❤
A wee lesson on that tri tone thing you mentioned would be amazing thanks as ever ❤❤❤
Unreal 💯
That tele sounding stanky GT!🔥🔥🔥
Another killer post, thanks as ever. Would be amazing to show us how to approach those muted type things you do, the chicken picking type mutes, so funky! ❤
The bass/plectrum parts I mean
Thanks Guthrie! Super helpful lesson-- always appreciate how you incorporate the theory/chord context so that we have a full understanding of how to apply the approach in multiple ways!
You need to try the red wine in Spain too :-). Really bad I won’t be in Madrid in October:-(.
Love how you sound with that Tele! The stiffness has to do with the extra tension of those two string trees! Take care 👍🎸
“This guitar is not quite happenin” @15:40 😂😂😂 ok bro! If that’s the sound of a guitar not happenin, then I dont want guitar to ever happen again!
I LOVE THOSE ITALIAN WINES , ESPECIALLY CHIANTI ..
All I can say is, “Thanks GT.”
I ❤ Italian food too
Really cool ideas, Guthrie. Thanks for this lesson.
Brilliant. Say hi to my old buddy Lex Price. Someday I'd like you to hear the work PAUL FRANKLIN did on my album way back in the day. You are a great teacher. Thanks!
Alright! The "flat-7/major-3rd" relationship you like to talk
about is super clear here...
Fantastic 😊
Great lesson thanks!!!
"This guitar is not quite happening"...after ripping off multi-bend licks for 5 minutes straight...lol. Awesome GT!
Great !
Good stuff!
Love this
"That's some Honky Tonk shit right there." Shortest master class in tonk I've ever seen.
Best line “ that’s some honky tonk shit right there!” Lol
Great stuff! I hear Merle haggard!
"Right so there's that"😂
Killer shit. I'll be trying that for sure. Much slower, lol.
