  • The City of Newcastle Upon Tyne in the north east of England is famous for its friendly local people affectionately known as Geordies . Their unofficial anthem is the old music hall song “Blaydon Races” which was written by Geordie Ridley in 1862 . Here’s the Dunelm Singers with a recording of the song on the very rare (locally made) Manor label dating from 1951 & is playing on my Decca 50 portable gramophone.

Hi Rowan , I bought the machine in it's original box four or five years ago in as new condition , it was fitted with the Collaro auto brake which was stopping halfway across the record . Apparently it had had this issue from new & it's previous owners ( including one so called gramophone expert ) couldn't fix it & consequently the machine was put away & never used , hence it's condition. fortunately I knew how to adjust it & soon had it working correctly. The Collaro brake was soon replaced in later models with one that was far less troublesome !🙂
