One of the most genius artists and desperately decent, humble musicians of this century. Doctor Rodriquez, Wayne University is indeed honoured to name you a Humanities Ph.D alumni. I honour you with this, one of your finest, most painful songs, every Christmas.
I've was lucky enough to come across Sixto shortly after he was first released in Australia . People talk about Bob Dylan being this amazing artist but he has absolutely nothing on Sixto in my opinion. The emotional intensity and depth of Sixto's sound and lyrics are second to none. He is a true artist and deserves the recognition that was far to long in coming
Absolutely! Sixto's play of words go beyond that of Dylan, or Lennon. But I totally agree with the fact that Sixto remained true to his humanity. Never let the failure of his early musical career ruin him, and the fame and success he tasted later in life get the better of him. A true master. I cried watching the Searching for Sugarman. I'm crying now listening to my favorite song. Thank you, Sixto. Rest in Freedom. From the Philippines.
I cannot believe only 55,5k people viewed this video...masterpiece written and composed by one of the greatest artists of the music history. Many years in the shadows. What a waste!!! But a priceless gift that one day someone made a documentary about him. Thank you Mr Rodriguez for existing.
the most underrated artist I've ever seen... suuperb lyrics and outstanding human being, this gentleman is the very definition of humility, I'm a big fan since I saw the documentary
because I lost my job... two weeks before christmas....... what a song!!! this my man.... oh rodriguez.. we don't have singers like you.. plz don't leave
Dusting off my old records from early '80s. So many memories of pot-induced clouded parties. Saw him in Australia. He's up there with Cohen, Dylan, Tindersticks as a lyricist. A friend described him as a cynic, and that's true but I also I feel the despair from songs like Cause that can bring me to tears. "how many times can you wake up in this comic book and plant flowers?".
Discovered this song only a couple years ago and was immediately transported back to my very childhood in the very early 70's. It's amazing how just the sound of a particular song that you've never heard in your life can be instantly identified to a specific time. This song is a gem wrapped up inside a time capsule. I wonder how many listeners younger than Gen X will get the now historical reference to planting flowers.
@@vs52217it's a counter culture / Vietnam War reference. Some of the war protesters of the time were know as flower children (hippies). Sometimes during a protest, they would hand out flowers to the police officers or later the National Guard troops there tasked with keeping order. Part of "make love, not war". But in this song, that youthful optimism and hope has waned and the singer laments that, as nice as that sentiment is, passing out flowers isn't doing much to turn the tide of problems beating down the country. Things were in great turmoil at the time. Above all, this song is about losing hope and losing the fight against growing jaded and cynical.
Love the song and artist, we hung out and lived intensely together in the late 90's and early 00's in the Cass Corridor of Detroit.. My building manager of Sheridan Court Paul Steele was Rodriguez's best friend, Paul had a jam room in an old coal bin in the basement.. Paul and i became serious friends and artistic collaborators in the 90's and thats when i met and befriended Rodriguez.. he walked all over our dangerous neighborhood, he showed up while we were painting landscapes in the city.. Many hours jamming in the basement, rooftop and more, much philosophizing.. Sony kept him on the back burner all those years w a promise to sometime make a movie about him.. Those were intense and important times.. I was and still work hard to save the planet, Detroit and more but the world is so manipulated in every sense.. I told everyone the tipping point for global warming action was passing 20 years ago.. We can still do something but i am tired of being abused by the art world, music industry, Detroit, the USA and more..
the best song i have heard for a lifetime. Fathomless sad and wonderful. How inspiring. Rodriguez i didn't know you but now i really admire your art!!!!
The man was a lyrical genius. Looking back to the days when we could have a casual conversation, walking through the neighborhood, it would have been a great time to talk about his lyrics and the experiences behind them. I remember him playing a song or two at local clubs... But I really didn't know his songs until the time when us Detroiters learned he was famous, then we could find his music online and I eventually bought some CDs... and he was a little harder to catch up with.
'Cause the sweetest kiss I ever got is the one I've never tasted 'Cause the smell of her perfume echoes in my head still Wow! Those 2 lines always blow my mind. So great.
Every one seems to have a favourite line from this song, i don't think there has been more profound lyrics than "a medal to replace the son of Mrs Annie Johnson.
Rodriguez & Dylan, are 2 different artists, styles etc, they are both Brilliant!! Although I'm more partial to Rodriguez, he's in a class of his own like no other.
Cause I lost my job two weeks before Christmas And I talked to Jesus at the sewer And the Pope said it was none of his God-damned business While the rain drank champagne My Estonian Archangel came and got me wasted Cause the sweetest kiss I ever got is the one I've never tasted Oh but they'll take their bonus pay to Molly McDonald, Neon ladies, beauty is that which obeys, is bought or borrowed Cause my heart's become a crooked hotel full of rumours But it's I who pays the rent for these fingered-face out-of-tuners and I make 16 solid half hour friendships every evening Cause your queen of hearts who is half a stone And likes to laugh alone is always threatening you with leaving Oh but they play those token games on Willy Thompson And give a medal to replace the son of Mrs. Annie Johnson Cause they told me everybody's got to pay their dues And I explained that I had overpaid them So overdued I went to the company store and the clerk there said that they had just been invaded So I set sail in a teardrop and escaped beneath the doorsill Cause the smell of her perfume echoes in my head still Cause I see my people trying to drown the sun In weekends of whiskey sours Cause how many times can you wake up in this comic book and plant flowers?
Faut arrêter de lire ou de raconter des conneries complotistes... Bob Dylan qui a le même âge est connu depuis le début des années 60, Sixto Rodriguez a fait 2 albums en 1970, 10 ans séparent les 2
Do you think he wasn't popular in his own country because he sang of the poverty and despair and the illusion of the American dream? (Im Australian and he was big within my cohort).
Blown away by Rodriguez! As often happens to amazing artists; watched Searching for Sugarman. Mesmerizing, like a surreal fairytale! Fantastic poet and musician. The man's humble demeanor puts so many artists to shame! Love Bob Dylan, but he's very arrogant; just watch Don't look back film; so arrogant it's disgusting. He's an asshole to work with, according to many musicians.
He was disliked by the black community in the Seventies. Jimi Hendrix as well, when he performed in Harlem, cause he proposed Bob Dylan Songs. The political correct can be as rassist as there ennemies, thats a lesson.
You could count on the fingers of one hand the people who have ever written a song as good as this.

cause the sweetest kiss i ever got is the one ive never tasted.. unrequited love. this guy is a genius.
Ãh yes, my fave lyrics, how profound ~
I was born in 80 and I just discovered him.
This song is now a favorite. Almost anyone can identify. Good voice too.
"Cause how many times can u wake up in this comic book, & plant flowers" ~👌🏽
Profound lyrics in ãll his music, a humble genius🌟
RIP Mr. Sugar Man. Thanks for your songwriting and the positive legacy you left for us who listened to you ❤

I agree with you and your views; l love Bob Dylan, yet he's no better than Rodriguez in my. opinion; and Bob lacks the humility of Rodriguez big time!

My brother Rob was told if he got fit we will put a green and gold on you ,but hey thanks but no thanks,

Agreed, I love the great musical poets like Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens, but they have absolutely nothing on Rodriguez

every time i hear this i get goosebumps. he leaves bob dylan in the shadows.
If you hear Like A Rolling Stone properly, you would probably not make this statement. Yeah he's good but Dylan is Dylan.

Bravoooo........
Cause I lost my job two weeks before Christmas
And I talked to Jesus at the sewer
And the Pope said it was none of his God-damned business
While the rain drank champagne
My Estonian Archangel came and got me wasted
Cause the sweetest kiss I ever got is the one I've never tasted
Oh but they'll take their bonus pay to Molly McDonald,
Neon ladies, beauty is that which obeys, is bought or borrowed
Cause my heart's become a crooked hotel full of rumours
But it's I who pays the rent for these fingered-face out-of-tuners
and I make 16 solid half hour friendships every evening
Cause your queen of hearts who is half a stone
And likes to laugh alone is always threatening you with leaving
Oh but they play those token games on Willy Thompson
And give a medal to replace the son of Mrs. Annie Johnson
Cause they told me everybody's got to pay their dues
And I explained that I had overpaid them
So overdued I went to the company store
and the clerk there said that they had just been invaded
So I set sail in a teardrop and escaped beneath the doorsill
Cause the smell of her perfume echoes in my head still
Cause I see my people trying to drown the sun
In weekends of whiskey sours
Cause how many times can you wake up in this comic book and plant flowers?
What a heart ranching song and story
....obra de arte !!!!!
