Consumers arent buying sedans is bullshit. Whenever a sedan is available at a decent price point they sell. The Elantra, Civic, Mazda 3 all sell well. What drives the sentiment people dont want sedans are OEMs selling them at the price of an suv and thus consuners opt for the better value which is an suv. But when a sedan is priced well, they sell.
That's what happened I believe I noticed the prices on The legacy started creeping up to be as much or more than the similar trim of Outback so yeah people would choose the outback at the same price.....but I like cars better so I chose the legacy over the outback....
Here’s the problem with sedans. They have to sell in high volume for it to be worth it for them. I’m talking 100k units volume. While compacts sedans hit that mark with the exception of the Mazda3 and Impreza, mid size sedans are becoming a harder sell as compact crossovers are comparable in price. So you end up with Camry and Accord dominating the maket selling over 500k units combined. Altima and Malibu sell about 100k each but they sell most of theirs to fleets. K5 & Sonata have been on the decline for years selling about 55k a year each and the Legacy only selling 20k.

Then maybe Subaru should have hit the standard then. Toyota and Honda have no problem doing it and they sell sedans all day long. The reality is the Subaru Legacy was a mediocre sedan. The CAFE standard wasn’t the reason it’s being discontinued. It’s because no one goes to Subaru for a sedan. Even the smaller Impreza has some of the worst fuel economy in the segment as you said yourself can’t hit 40 mpg.
I never thought that the Legacy would not outlast the Chevy Malibu. The Malibu is still being built with no design changes since 2016 except for dropping some trim levels. I used to be a die-hard sedan fan(I actually drive a Subaru Ascent now), but technology and improvements just make crossovers a much better jack of all trades, especially if you only have one car. Toyota is doing things right, good mpg, coming out with very nice looking cars, only thing they need to add would be manual transmission and awd. Subaru needs to grab this chance and give us a better wrx, and make the sti come back in both the sedan/hatch/wagon. Bring back the impreza for the love of god. If they actually listening they would sell like hot cakes, for the right cost of course.
I really think Subaru could have tried harder to make the Legacy more appealing. They could have drawn on the Legacy’s rallying pedigree ( pre WRX ) and make it more of a sports/performance car, a notch up from a WRX. I’ve driven the 6th generation and it was nothing to write home about. Look at early Legacy GT models from 3rd and 4th 0:02 generations. These were hot sedans. I’d love Subaru to go out on a limb and create a desirable Legacy not just one that has 4wd and a low price 🫤
I have a 2020 Ford Fusion, the last year it was made, and I only have the SE hybrid model, but people still tell me I have a really nice looking car. Maybe sedans could make a come back someday. I get 45 mpg.
If they are going to have 8 EVs, then I doubt all of them are SUVs, that’s too many, so in the end, they will probably bring back the Legacy name in few years as a pure EV.
Back in 2020-22 when I was looking it was Subaru's infotainment and CVT that did the Legacy in for me. The Accord 2.0T 10speed just seemed better but those upper trim Legacies have some pretty decent interiors. I would still feel comfortable recommending it to anyone looking for a 4 seater and wants AWD
I'm still surprised that GM is still selling the Chevy Malibu. The Malibu is way long in the tooth(last redesigned in 2016), and it's way more popular with rental car agencies than consumer buyers. And when a vehicle is considered a "rental car" favorite, it's usually not a good vehicle.
My old man had a Gen 3 Legacy GT sedan, spoiler, leather seats and all. He loved it and sadly the car had the dreaded EJ head gasket issue which sent it to the junkyard. He had a soft spot for Subies ever since.
The legacy was more expensive than the Camry hybrid in the $50k+ price range in my country. Few people bought them after the 3rd Gen so the Legacy was not sold here after the fourth Gen. Levorg was sold here but no one bought them also so it was rebranded as the WRX wagon. WRX sales are also very low. Accord also hasn’t been sold here for many years.
It’s just that Subaru didn’t put too much effort on Legacy as we thought. Like consumer demand, we want hybrid or plug-in hybrid. Subaru ignore that or least bring a Spec B or Outback Sedan they ignore that too. I think 4th Gen was the best design for Legacy after that the 5th-7th Gen Subaru didn’t care anymore design boring looking sedan some didn’t bother want to buy the car.
Once upon a time Subaru made some interesting, quirky, and performance oriented cars. Then they started using CVTs, got bigger, and became bland. Wished they kept the 3.6R Legacy. Same with a 2.5XT Forester!
Honda and Toyota yes. Hyundai and Kia are only selling half of what they did before the pandemic and they sell what a quarter of what the Camry and Accord do. They will probably be gone by end of their current generation.

By the way, the Levorg is essentially a wagon version of the WRX, which in turn is based on the exact same platform as the Impreza and Crosstreck. So the Levorg is the spiritual successor to that Impreza wagon we all wanted in the early 2000s.

Subaru missed a massive opportunity by not going the hybrid route with the legacy (when the plug in Crosstrek hybrid was released, they could have refined the system) and it was a huge missed opportunity in my opinion. i have a 2018 limited legacy and while im not happy about the cars reliability and CVT though all my issues were fixed under warranty, it is as close to a luxury sedan one can purchase without the hefty price tag. there are so many great features, top notch safety rating, excellent visibility, mileage and AWD. love the car otherwise. if this car had Toyota's E-CVT like the Crosstrek hybrid had (a version of it), i would buy one in a heartbeat. i didn't consider the camry earlier because something or the other was off, but if the forester hybrid doesn't measure up i am going to order the next camry no matter how long i have to wait for it.

death of the legacy is very sad but it's end was very inevitable. Toyota will take those remaining sales.
What we want are wagons, the sti to come back, more manual and sporty cars with good mpg.
I am shocked to learn the Legacy is being discontinued. I was hoping to buy one.
You're better off getting the new Camry. More power and better gas mileage with AWD.
@@economiccrisis9267 The 2025 Camrys only have 225 Horsepower lol. That’s pitiful.
@@cecilthecavetroll9743better than 169hp

4th gen legacy will always be my stylistic favorite
I love my 2018 legacy best car I ever owned
If the legacy was manual with turbo
I have a memory of a Legacy. It was a loaner while my Impreza hatch was in the shop for wheel bearings AGAIN and oil consumption AGAIN.
Civic Si with the MT. It’s getting harder for normal people with normal salaries to have fun these days.
My old man had a Gen 3 Legacy GT sedan, spoiler, leather seats and all. He loved it and sadly the car had the dreaded EJ head gasket issue which sent it to the junkyard. He had a soft spot for Subies ever since.
I barely see these on the road. Camrys and Accords are kings.
Don't worry, the Accord is gonna get axed soon.
Funny - I saw a Legacy today and wondered, “how can this compete with Camry and Accord?”
I owned a 2006 Subaru Legacy. Nice and comfortable.
Wish i had one. Your era was the best Legacy.
Where the hell do you live then? Antarctica?
It’s just that Subaru didn’t put too much effort on Legacy as we thought. Like consumer demand, we want hybrid or plug-in hybrid. Subaru ignore that or least bring a Spec B or Outback Sedan they ignore that too. I think 4th Gen was the best design for Legacy after that the 5th-7th Gen Subaru didn’t care anymore design boring looking sedan some didn’t bother want to buy the car.
Wdym, the 2015-2019 Legacy looked sweet
For Mitsubishi it was also the Galant.
If Mazda can make the 6 live on, why can’t Subaru make the Legacy live on? 😢
The style of it looks frumpy and only old people seem to have it
Once upon a time Subaru made some interesting, quirky, and performance oriented cars. Then they started using CVTs, got bigger, and became bland.
Wished they kept the 3.6R Legacy. Same with a 2.5XT Forester!
Accord n Camry will soak the customers
I don't think I've seen a Legacy on the road in 2 years. Where are these 80,000 cars?
Sedans from Honda, Toyota, Kia, and Hyundai are selling well but the US is a Truck/SUV nation now.
Honda and Toyota yes. Hyundai and Kia are only selling half of what they did before the pandemic and they sell what a quarter of what the Camry and Accord do. They will probably be gone by end of their current generation.
2005 Legacy Outback owner lets go
Does that mean the Honda Accord will be discontinued in the future since sales are declining
There’s a little known rumor going around that Accord will die as a sedan and become a Crosstour to compete with the Crown
I have a year left on the lease of my second Outback. I have no idea what I want to get next. Perhaps a Polestar or an ID 4. I don't think a Solterra is in the running.
The ID.4 is horrible
Subaru are a small Car manufacturer Kirk, they can´t build fastly new Cars with different powertrains.
The sedan he couldn’t think of at the end what the American sole survivor sedan the Chevy Malibu.
CT4, CT5, Celestique, and Charger 4 door are the only other Detroit sedans left
@@chezzyperson3339 celestique is a liftback like a prius. Not a sedan
This means the next gen Outback will be a proper SUV on its own platform, and not sharing with the Legacy?
If I remember correctly the 1989 Legacy was basically a rebranded 1988 Subaru GL? Hence the name Legacy?
Subaru let the Legacy die. Not even a Wilderness trim before they axed it.
Maybe the money to make the legacy will go to a New Baja?
If you want a legacy their partner Toyota has the all new 25 Camry with 53 miles per gallon for 32k well-equipped at the LE level.
The new Camrys only have 225hp lol. You can’t do anything with that.
@@cecilthecavetroll9743 they have electric elements that make them have a quick off-line feel and I think that I’d rather have 1994 gas prices which is what that equals out to when you get 50 miles a gallon and you basically pay 1/3 of the price
@@cecilthecavetroll9743 and the base Subaru Legacy only has 180hp, so what exactly would you do with that? At least the Camry gets 225 or 232hp (AWD) in every trim level.
@@tails300 Yeah, but the Subaru has at least an option to opt for a 260hp, 270 ft-lbs of torque engine.
Man, the Levorg looks so good.. The only way we could get a station wagon in the US is to buy a compact SUV / crossover and lower it to a normal ground clearance height for street driving.
By the way, the Levorg is essentially a wagon version of the WRX, which in turn is based on the exact same platform as the Impreza and Crosstreck. So the Levorg is the spiritual successor to that Impreza wagon we all wanted in the early 2000s.
I had a 1990 Legacy that I turned into a rally car. Over 225k and was still running perfectly in 2004 when I sold it. Loved that car! RIP Legacy
I loved my 2012 Legacy, too bad it got totaled by a red light runner.
For me the Legacy kind of died after the 4th gen but still, no more hope of Subaru recapturing its past glory now, at least in the midsize segment.
I agree the 4th was best design for legacy after that they didn’t care anymore just make it boring.
1:56 that photo is the Legacy Outback SUS. "sport utility sedan" 😊
Part of the problem is the way that the government calculates fleet MPG. The longer wheelbase cars (i.e. sedans) get penalized for being longer.
What took so long? When the Mazda 6 got disconnected from the American and Canadian market my first question was this. The Mazda is dead but the Subaru Legacy still exists? Like who the heck is buying Subaru Legacies? I see Mazda 6s running around but I rarely see current generation Subaru Legacies.
My Mom had a ‘93 Wagon with a 5-speed when I was a kid. It was a great car for those New England winters. Never let us down. I had a ‘15 3.6 R and it to was a great car. I switched to a Crosstrek and my Mom went back to Subaru when she bought her current car, a Forester. Certainly sad news but it was inevitable. If in the market for a mid-sized sedan it would be either a Camry or a Legacy for me. Not interested in Kia/Hyundai or Nissan and I’m not a fan of the current Accord.
Malibu is next on the chopping block.
Yep. Pretty pricey for a vehicle as dated as the Malibu. That’s why Chevy hasn’t either updated or planned a redesign.

I love my '19 Legacy. RIP to a real one
You're right. Subaru should've added a Legacy hybrid.
sometimes it´s time to say good bye 😢, the way things are.
Finally I only saw them as company cars lately . I thought they stopped making them about 4 years ago..
I have a 2007 Legacy, I would get 260 miles per tank, it took almost 18 gallons to fill it, it was not a turbo model. The transmission was horrible, if it was raining the remote trunk would not open, just an extra rinse for you.
I think Toyota should step in. Subaru is a valuable brand. And if you lose the boxer I would rather a Toyota power plant.
To make the boxer more reliable is simple. Stronger internals, and dry sump oiling system to maintain oil pressure regardless of angle or cornering lateral G force.
@@AntilleanConfederation I’m a fan despite any flaws. But the future is hybrid drive trains. And Toyota has that experience. My 2015 Legacy has been almost flawless. I think the timing tensioners should be replaced. But it’s so minor at this point I’m keeping on trucking.
This stinks. I like the ground clearence of the legacy. I hate the touch screen.
I would have loved a hybrid legacy.

I currently own a 2024 Legacy Premium and i really love it ... I know it gets a lot of hate but it suits my needs better than a camry or Accord would.....
First car was a hand me down 95’ dark blue legacy wagon from my aunt… sad day
I feel like Subaru only does well in particular size segment. No one goes to them for cars or large suvs (probably because they shoved the cvt in Ascent). I feel like a small truck based on the forester is probably a better investment.
Is this only in the US market?
Umm the us market was the last to still have the Legacy everywhere else including Japan already killed it off...
Sedans started going downhill as soon as the first crossovers started coming out. Hard to beat utility with a sedan like ride.
No it was when Ford announced that sedans aren’t profitable enough
@@chezzyperson3339 leave it to Ford to screw everyone over
I will never understand why people buy such large cars or buy too much car that they cant afford. I wish wagons were more payed attention to, but hey, i guess the government convinced the people that its totally normal to drive a vehicle that is larger than a WW2 tank.
Last time I was in the market for a car(2013), I like the idea of the legacy with the all wheel drive but I took if for a test drive and it was an absolute dog and I knew I could not live with it. The sales guy was working me hard but I just walked out.
Sad to see it go, I liked it; and it'll be interesting to see what Mazda does with their 6.
It hurts to see sport cars slowly going away by each year. No more manuals. No more sedans. Just more bland EV's and more SUV's... It very difficult to accept change. I hope in 2050, I would see a cute old "classic" Miata on the road. Just Zooming through EV's...
I’m surprised it hasn’t gone sooner. SUV/CUVs are so much better/practical.
No, they aren’t.
Fingers crossed they bring back the WRX STI on the Impreza platform.
Subaru sundowned the STi division. No more STi’s ever
Subaru saw the new Camry and knew they couldn't compete against that lol
Subaru could've easily upgraded the Legacy like the new Camry and chose not to.
The Legacy and Outback were almost twins for a long time so it seemed kind of redundant to have them both.
Actually they competed in different segments. The Outback was a lifted wagon version of the Legacy.
It’s sad but I get it. I don’t see many brand new Legacys around these days, people aren’t buying the new ones. However all the old ones are still running and are everywhere. I guess Accord, Altima, and Camry are the champions of the midsize sedan segment.
