That was really cool Michael. Learnt a lot from that. I had no idea it could do that. Since I use an iPad mini wifi edition, I expect (having read the long GPS-related thread below) that there will be no GPS info gathered by the iPad and therefore - if what you were discussing IS so - then it won't work correctly or at all in F mode. Gorgeous video and footage. Thanks.
If it doesn't work the Litchi track mode might do the trick. No GPS needed for track mode but it does take some processing power with whatever device you are using.
I found this video to be informative and helpful ... thank you. A couple weeks ago I parked my Phantom 3 in the top of a 150 foot tall tree because I did not take into account what you describe here. A 120 foot tall tree growing on a 30 foot rise (that I couldn't see) equals very bad news.
Good news is that ActiveTrack incorporates Terrain Mode in it when activated..... I am 77% sure of this! I did a test run the other day and it did track me with the rise and fall of elevation.
Yes I watched that video .... also realize that the P3 doesn't have it but switching to the P4P+ sometime in January so once again, I have much to learn all over again :-)
That was really interesting to see. I know other drones also plan to make it easy to do a follow mode but there are so many factors to consider to make it workable if you plan to get your drone back safe.
That is so true! I still can't figure out why devices without GPS doesn't work. The P3 has GPS so I'm not sure why the viewing device needs it. You can fly in P-mode with a non-gps device. Not knowing exactly what's going on bothers me!
+Michael Kincaid That's not obvious? The viewing device is sending its GPS coordinates to the P3 so it can move from the P3's coordinates nearer to the viewing device's. It's not locating the transmitter by the transmitter signals. It's using the smartphone/tablet's GPS position that it's sending. Nice vid btw.
***** Now that I think it through it makes sense! Let me know if my thinking is correct......my GalaxyS5 is constantly pulling GPS coordinates and that is then being sent to the P3 through the controller, correct? If that is the case my disconnect issues are coming from my phone and it's ability to pull in a strong GPS signal?
Correct on the GPS follow mode. If you're getting a signal disconnect, probably not since that's just between the transmitter and the P3. If you mean follow mode stops and starts, then possibly the phone is losing GPS signal or failing to transmit it to the P3 through the transmitter. I've read there are far more issues with Android devices. I use an iPad Mini and have no issues with follow me mode, but I'm not doing it on a vehicle like you. I really want to, so it was fun to watch your video! Haha.
Nice shots. I noticed when I did mine that you can adjust the height while it is in follow me mode. Here in Florida we don't have much elevation change.. lol.. I want to try mine on longer test but need to get more comfortable with it. I don't like not having my hands on the controller...
good job.. I'd be nervous around all those trees too.. I don't think I'll ever get to the point of trusting it to far... the other day it was following me and just decided to stop and hover 50 ft away from me, I kept driving and eventually I had to stop and manually fly it to me.. Good luck on your project.
The quality of the camera is fabulous! I"m simply amazed at the detail you're able to capture. Great video, too. Thanks for the demonstrations. FYI, if you have an iPhone 5s, 6s, 6S+, iPad Air 2 or newer and you use the AutoPilot by Logics software ($19 in intunes app store), the software utilizes the GPS/barometric gizmo in the mobile device so that in Follow mode you can go up and down hills, etc and the P3 will adjust accordingly. I guess if you flew high enough with the DJI software the elevation/follow issue really wouldn't matter much. Question: how fast were you going on the scooter? Were you comfortable with how DJI's follow mode worked overall? I noticed you & the scooter left the screen a couple times. How would you suggest to overcome that? Send the quad higher...or? Thanks again!
+Scott Hutten Thanks for checking it out Scott! The elevation is a issue with the Android setup..... I just made sure I was up high enough so as it wouldn't be an issue! I was only running 20 or 25 mph if that so the Phantom could keep up. I am comfortable with the follow me mode....so far it has performed pretty well, it does tend to follow at some weird angles. I was hoping in this video that the P3 would follow in directly behind me but for whatever reason it was flying way off to my right and then when I made that left turn it stayed way off to my left! I might have to borrow my sons iPad because the elevation thing freaks me out! I was planning a pretty aggressive run traveling down beside the Ocoee River but there is about a 300' elevation change and that scares the heck out of me! I guess I could start on the high side but by the end of the run it would really be up there.
Hey Michael thats pretty cool :). Is there anything you did not test ;)). I wanted to try this via Mountain Bike but the Controller is too Sticky. Perhaps I try to put it in a bagpack.
+Martin Collas Backpack should work... I have a lanyard that I use and tried just flipping around to where it was on my back but it flopped around way to much and didn't hang right so I strapped it down to the scooter seat, it worked pretty well but hate not being able to see the live feed. I think I am going to purchase a long cable so I can mount my phone in front of me so I can at least see whats going on. I look forward to checking out your progress and will be checking out your channel!
Great video! I have a stupid question-how did you record the sound? Just integrate sound from GoPro to the footage phantom recorded later on? I just bought mine, can't wait to test it out!
+Michael Kincaid thanks! I didn't find this app in iOS tho. Do you know what can I do with recording sound if I don't have a GoPro with me when I am shooting with my drone?
Wang Robert Surely ios has some sort of screen recording app... I think the Mobizen app is only for Android. Search iOS for screen recording and you should find a few options. Just be careful, running the DJI app and a screen recording app at the same time can cause your phone to crash so be prepared to fly the Phantom manually! 👍
+PyroDrone Yeah, not very comfortable when it was going behind the trees and out of sight... I was trying to get it to follow directly behind me but for whatever reason it started following me off to the side, I still have some figuring out to do. I was trying to keep at a nice high altitude to not be a nuisance but as I went uphill the Phantom doesn't compensate for the increase in elevation!
+drink15 I have..... I am getting around 1500 feet before I start experiencing loss of video feed. Not sure if you have seen this one or not ruclips.net/video/kIY4DN8wtJQ/видео.html Haven't given up on the Bebop, just having way to much fun with the Phantom at the moment!
Really depends on what I'm shooting. 4K is overkill in most situations unless I'm trying to pull off some still shots or capture some scenic landscape stuff. 1080p is much easier to edit and I like the higher fps. I do have several 4K P3 videos on my channel. Thanks for checking it out! 👍
It's a good thing you lifted off before that truck came through there. lol. I'm just wondering why it stays so far back when it's following. Damn, your neighbor seems like a jackass. He didn't need to blow the horn.
It does follow at some weird angles and distance but I was pleased that it did as well as it did. The neighbor is cool, just a honk to say hello, they keep me stocked with fresh habanero peppers out of their garden throughout the season! 👍
if you start the following me more directly above you it will kind of stay closer to you I agree with the altitude I did my first one at 180 feet in on a playback you could tell or you can see it was 180 feet on the button the whole way
works worse than expected. maybe if it was closer to you it might be better. i have one aswell and was thinking about using it to film off road shenanigans
+Froggy Vloggers Ha! Not really, you can hear the Phantom even when I have it 400' in the air, it is a very noisy critter! I can get around 18-19 minutes of flight time out of her. Thanks for checking it out!

I think you should write a letter to the President. Of DJI at least. :O)

For sure will be making more test runs.
Awesome video Thanks for the follow thru !
Much appreciated! 👍
That was totally AWESOME!!
Thanks Mechele!
+Michael Kincaid Your very welcome

I also did follow me mode in my neighborhood it did great.
Nice, the footage from the DJI Phantom 3 camera looks great and the Follow Me feature seems to work well.
Thanks! A ND filter will help that much more, thanks for checking it out!
Wow, That is great stuff, I think It can do this for the P3 Standard too, Not tried it yet but certainly going to try it after watching this.
Wow! How cool was that!
+Diana J Thanks Diana!
Those are beautiful homes. Where was this taken?

+PYRO NATION Thanks Pyro!
+Michael Kincaid hey!! i really enjoy your videos, they really inspire me to get a quad!, i hit the sub button with pleasure
Bajan Aviation Thanks! Back at ya! You have been subbed!
what hand held camera are you filming with?Great video!
Thanks for checking it out! Either my GoPro Hero3 Silver or Hero4 Black, can't remember which one!
Amazing now I can do it with mine
👍
cOOL video micheal, it performed excellent..you still nervous? liked and subbed!
Haha! I haven't tried it again but know I'll be on edge again! Thanks for the sub, back at ya! 👍
Great video. Do you have a link to the motor mount reinforcement you have. They look 3D printed and I wouldn't mind printing my own.
It is actually the mounts for the quick disconnect prop guards.

+Michael Kincaid thanks! I didn't find this app in iOS tho. Do you know what can I do with recording sound if I don't have a GoPro with me when I am shooting with my drone?

Have you done a range test and have you given up on the bebop?
+drink15 I have..... I am getting around 1500 feet before I start experiencing loss of video feed. Not sure if you have seen this one or not ruclips.net/video/kIY4DN8wtJQ/видео.html
Haven't given up on the Bebop, just having way to much fun with the Phantom at the moment!
+Michael Kincaid Ah, thank you.
That guy was great. Its always fun explaining technology with the technically challenged.
Hi there, what app were you using?
The DJI Go app
nice houses!
🏠✔👍☺
you have to hold the remote with you ?
Yes, in follow me mode you need the controller with you.
was that video shot 1080?
Yep, here is one on 4k

so why do you have a DJI p3 pro yet record in 1080?
