One thing I specifically liked in this video - you showed pictures of the actual products when using g the term “hot mud”, so it’s clear what to use. I took on a project that was too big and beyond my experience, to help out my daughter. I wish I had found your site sooner! And thank you for your service and protecting the American way of live.

This is great info. I’m self taught as well. 20 something years ago, I couldn’t get my paper tape down with out bubbles so the fiber tape was getting a better results. Had I seen a pro do their work, I wouldn’t have made so many mistakes. Videos like yours and others have made taping and skimming much more fun. I’ll add to what you have done here by saying it is a great practice to prefill ANY gaps before applying tape. Slam that hot mud into the gap so it mushrooms out the back and wipe clean with your knife. A little insurance on your time spent doing the best you can do every time you get out your gear. I’ve demoed drywall that has had this done and the joints were so strong the seam didn’t break when I was doing the wiggle, wiggle, wiggle then pull giant pieces of drywall down(you grab the drywall with your hands and wiggle it so that the fasteners break through the paper and you can pull giant pieces down, bigger pieces is less handling, less time spent cleaning up as well) seeing that the mud was applied like that was interesting then to notice it was fiber taped after I deliberately broke the seam was an eye opening. I really appreciate your tutorials, your helping all of us be better every time we get after it.

I’m finishing my garage. I had to insulate and Sheetrock a portion of the walls. But I had to also finish the ceiling. I removed the previous tape joints and used hot mud and mess tape. All seems so far are holding up beautifully. It has been way faster than trying to Remus half falling off old tape joint that original came with the house.

I'm painting my son's room and the drywall is ripped down to the brown paper in several spots and the paint is peeling and cracking. I purchased a brand new mesh tape and tried to stick it on a complete dray wall (ceiling) and it would not stick,i knew which side is sticky but it was a disaster especially when I was doing the ceiling after ai tried a lot I gave up then I had an idea why not soak the mesh tape with fast setting mud (thin layer)and stick it on the ceiling guess what it worked and I did finish the job the point here is not all mesh tape glue is strong and be prepared to act quickly and solve the problem love you show

I've been taking critical tips from you for a while, so I decided to get honest and subscribe.
I learned about crack repair from an earlier video but I feel better knowing I didn't mess them up. (None of them have reappeared.) Sadly, I forgot how hot the mud should be and got a 20 lb. bag of 5 minute stuff! I made it work by getting all my ducks in a row before mixing it, but I am going to sideline (or maybe dispose of) it and get some 20 minute mud.
Yeah, five minute is best left to Pros.
Thank you for confirming what I was pretty shore I already knew. You are funny telling the story of reading directions. Made me get up and get a new roll and read it also. Thing is where I'm from most wall finish is blueboard and plaster. those guys always use mesh and strike the joints first. Now I'm doing my own house and going drywall because for one I'm alone and plaster guys have tenders to keep the plaster on the hawk. I want a strong joint so its mesh and durabond for me then fare it up with compound. Have been looking at your vac sander reviews. Thank you, very helpful.

There are certainly premixed that can be used for taping. Doesn’t have to be hot mud. Read the labels. I use both with equal success. Thanks for the great videos.
I did read the labels and that’s why I show everybody that they say to only use fast setting joint compound. I’ve never seen any other but if you can show me 1 I’d be glad to see it

Sometimes i use adhesive spray with the mesh , exspecailly over mud doesnt fall off before coat, and yes, defently want a good ccoat of hot mud before regular ive notice tape and top with hot mud and skim coat with regular works good , bte thanks for the video

I used all-purpose compound with mesh tape on my garage I built in 2006, I just went out and looked at it and did have a few small cracks but I think they could easily be covered with a quick coat of paint. I'm hoping to build a house soon, to be safe I will be using the hot mud. Thanks for the Videos!

As always great information Guy!! My brother-in- law did alot of drywall and he always said don't ever use mesh tape cause all it does is crack. Well he never used hot mud.😃😃🙄🙄. To this day he will still say don't use mess tape

There used to be cloth type tape many years ago as well-had to be in bedded same as paper

I'm a professional commercial and industrial painter and drywall finisher with only 20 years experience but in that time I've personally used at least 300+ rolls mesh tape and learned from my experience that mesh tape should always be 1st coated with quick set or the chance of it cracking is about 90% . Now I'm more of just a superintendent for the company I work for and if I catch my finishing crew using mesh with regular mud they will be run off my jobsites because of the headache and time and material of rework that will be needed to fix the problems that it will create . Mesh tape is only allowed on patchwork and not on new construction on my jobsites . This kilted guy sure knows his stuff and everything I've seen him post is so very true 👍.

Why is premixed mud so prone to failure when used with mesh? Is it due to shrinkage when it dries?

Sceptical about the nays of mesh tape. Ive used it lots with regular mud and had no problems.
The first time I used it I noticed it was sticky like tape, so it was a no brainer that it was supposed to stick to the wall, not embedded. That's how I figured it out. Thanks for the video!
There is that. But you would only know that it requires setting type joint compound if you read the label so it was still worthwhile.
Pros use spray adhesive to hold the mesh .. keeps it tight prevents blistering

Hello. I am doing my 1st shower tiling. Drywallers have finished hanging and mudding what they needed. I know I need mesh tape in the shower and to waterproof it prior to the tiling. What about a premixed modified thinset for the joints instead of The hot mud?
How do you correct it if you accidentally used all purpose mud? We haven’t primer or painted yet. Wondering if the all purpose can be removed enough to redo it with proper hot mud
I used mesh tape. Wrong, apparently. 15 years later, no problems.
They wouldn’t make the mesh self-sticking if it was supposed to be embedded.
Horse manure... Back in the 70's when they invented the mesh tape with glue adhesive on one side was to cut down the time it takes to embed the paper tape... But with all those return calls for using mesh tape doesn't save you time or money in the long run... The manufacturers when they created the mesh tape didn't see 30 to 50 years down the road or that eventually the adhesive not being embedded in the mud dries up and pops loose and with the heavy joint compound weighting it down causes it to fail and pop or fall/sag... It's why you see one version where they claim no embedding is needed yet others say YES embed it...
again I’ve done drywall repairs for a solid 20 years and nothing but drywall repairs so I fixed tens of thousands of repairs with no callbacks, using mesh tape 95% of the time. It’s all about technique and not materials. And I’ve been around a while. I first walked on stilts spotting nails when I was eight years old in 1969.

What kind of mud for second and top coats? Hot mud for second, lightweight all purpose for top coat maybe? Please advise.
That's good to know cause I'm redoing walls and don't want to waste time over doing things not called for..
I can remember back when Duro-bond was not so easy to sand..and hardened under water.once had a guy use it for bondo lol..said it was better than the car bondo.that was in the late 1980's..now it's all easy sand.
Dura bond is still very popular, and easy sand will even set up underwater. Learned that when I left a mixer in a bucket of water, LOL

I always applied it like the paper tape when doing certian patches to be on the safe side . Just sticking it to the wall and mudding over it just didn't sit right 🤣 .
Question: when doing repairs and wanting to get good adhesion with the mesh tape, would you just wipe everything down with a damp rag or sponge and/or put some primer on the repair area so the tape actually can stick? Love your site and thank you for your service to our great country!

Sounds like we have the same length of experience except I was 80% painting which comes with 20% patch and repair. I love an honest guy that admits when he's made a mistake and the call back is all on him. I take full responsibility for my f ups. All the other contractors I've met always seem to blame the homeowner or the house for their scapegoats.

As a house painter/sheet rock finisher of over 40 years I fully agree with putting the mesh tape on first,then bedding it,,however I'm a little puzzled over why it's recommended to use hot/sack mud over regular mud,,,my guess is it dries a little harder?

I think that mesh and hot mud are the strongest, but I’ll give you a link to an even stronger mesh tape at the bottom of this post. But you also have to know how to use it or it can get you in trouble. If you’re someone who puts on a high build and then sands it off, then paper tape or fiber fuse and regular mud

Good informative video.
I used mesh tape and covered it with CGC Dust Control lightweight all purpose ready-mixed drywall compound. (I didn't embed the mesh)
The finished result had cracks on just about every joint.
Question for ya, Mr. Kilted Guy:
Before priming, should I put paper tape over each crack and re-mud...or just simply re-mud? ...as I don't want to chance that the cracks will bleed through the paint.
When that happened to me, I tried putting another coat on and it just cracked again. So I sanded it down to near the tape, then spread big stretch caulking on all the cracks, and spread it thin about 3 inches wide, and the next day, recoated it and it was fine a year later when I saw the homeowner. Lesson learned
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Before I was able to get back on online to see if you had replied ...and as I was on a deadline to get the place painted, I put paper tape over ALL the cracks and mudded them with regular compound (But only thick enough to do the 'repair' job)
This morning ALL looked great, so I sanded and primed.
Looks now to be just as perfect as if Mr. Kilted Guy had done the taping/mudding job in the first place ;-)

You are correct! If your veiwers dont beleive you, google it. I would have lost money on that bet. Im in line buying drywall suplies 3 times a week, see lots of customers buying mesh tape with readymix! No wonder l make my living doing drywall repairs.
Yeah I could tell that whenever I re-did someone else’s repair with mesh tape that they had used non-setting mud.

I’m pretty much in the valley so 95% of the time it was within 10 miles but occasionally traveled 25 or 30 miles and sometimes up on top of Glade Park which is kind of up on a mountain but I usually charged a little more for that.

Question: after gluing mesh tape to wall we put the first thin coat of hot mud (fast setting) that still lets you see tape. Then after it dries we put a second coat of hot mud a little wider than first coat feathering sides.
Then when second coat dries, do we apply same hot mud for 3rd and final coat or we have to switch to regular all purpose ready mix joint compound?
Please advise anyone that knows.
Also if we apply hot mud 20 minutes can we use a heat gun 30 minutes after applied to speed the dry out time to apply second and third coat, primer and paint in 1 day?

You shouldn’t put hot mud on thinner than an eighth of an inch or it won’t bond properly. Watch the video below to learn more. You can speed up the drying of drywall mud but if you dry thick mud too fast it will crack and only surface dry. You have to make sure it’s 100% dry and not just on the surface

I did a lot of repairs on an old lath and plaster building. It was common to have cracks on the old lath and plaster. If the crack was deep I'd scrape it out with a utility knife, put down a layer of hot mud, and cover the crack with paper tape. Then I'd cover the repair area with hot mud that I feathered out. The time savings from mesh tape in that situation seemed insignificant and I was told that paper tape was stronger. Does anybody have any comments on this? Thanks.
Paper tape is stronger. I have had mesh tape (first coated with hot mud) fail. Butt joints are notorious for cracking.
Can I just use easy sand 20 for everything so I don’t need different muds for one job? Also premixed or a bag what is the better choice?

As a patch guy, my experience has shown that embedding never cracks. I have repaired mesh that wasnt. It comes off easily. Try and pull embedded mesh and it will come off in strings. A prefilled joint is always stonger. Do you prefill before paper?
I prefill if needed. Like I mentioned Ive probably installed over 500 rolls of mesh tape and have always stuck it to the surface and not embedded it and never had a problem. I think both ways work if you use fast setting mud and the failures we see are most often from people not using that. I’ve fixed many previous repairs where they used mesh and most felt too brittle for hot mud.

Thanks guy yep I had this same problem and I was working with a more experienced guy then myself. I read the directions looked at it and said yeah were not supposed to put all purpose onto mesh tape and then he told me I didnt know what I was talking about and he had already been with the company for years so I was the problem.
So is there any difference in using the micro mesh tape? because I switched to the thinner micro tape for less mud floating and quicker jobs.,

I'm curious, I've done plastering in the UK, we used mesh tape for all out joints, and paper in the corners. We never used fast set for any of the mesh tape. We never had an issue with cracking on the joints, is this because we put several coats over the whole wall, and not the joint?

It’s MUCH stronger mud
Once dry, ordinary mud can be dissolved in water; hot mud can't. Hot mud cures in the same way cement does: water slakes the quicklime in it.

Do you think that new fiber fuse tape is stronger still? You had it one your channel before. I own a painting company and basically picked up drywall repairs over the years. All I use is that new stuff and just want to see what you think because I want to use the best stuff for me customers. Thx!
I do still think it’s a good product overall, except for inside angles. For speed, I still use the mesh tape and have never had a problem with it in all my career.

My local Lowes carries a product called Fiba Tape and I have been tempted to give it a try.
I just refreshed the video and saw a photo of Fiba Tape on the screen before the video started. Have you used it, if so, any opinion on it?
Myself and most other pros are not fond of using mesh tape on the inside angles because we don’t feel it’s really strong enough. Fibafuse is a good choice but it can tear easily on inside angles. I prefer paper tape for those but if you’re careful not to tear the tape with a corner of your knife, fibafuse is good
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY I am a total novice with wall work and in process of fixing a room l where I removed all the crown moulding (1950's house with 70 year old moulding) in preference for having a wall with no moulding. Under the moulding is bare wood or gypsum wallboard(?). The other part of the wall (and ceiling) has 70 years of paint layers and on top of a layer of some sort of texture (plaster?) so there is about 1/8" inch to fill. I am trying to use "ultrathin" mesh tape with DryDex low dust joint compound on the inside corners (where ceiling meets the wall) but not real happy with the result at the joint itself because lack or compound over the joint. Is there a trick or special corner tool to do this better? I am not expecting it to look professional but I just don't want it to crack after we paint it. Thoughts?
for me, the mesh tapes sticky side made it quite obvious you stuck it straight to the wall, then covered it. what good is it being sticky otherwise?

Depends upon where you are, but the basics are the same: look at the entire job, figure what time & materials it should take to finish all aspects (you can quote parts of a job if they want, or the entire thing), then add a small percentage to cover insurance, transportation, eqpt maintenance, and price accordingly.
Also make sure to spell out exactly what the quote covers. Anything extra should fall on the customer (i.e. if it's a patch and I open the wall and find a leak or mold, they need to fix, or pay someone to fix, the leak or have the mold remediated before I continue).
If I really do not want to do a job, I'll tell them up front they should find someone else. If they insist on a quote, I'll figure (& quote) double or triple my regular rate (depending on how much I don't want to do the job). Mainly because it's a lot easier to do a job I don't like when I know I'm making my regular rate times 2 or 3.

Crack on the wall at the corner of the door, How would you repair this problem.
1) Replace the sheetrock so the seem doesn't meet at the corner. (would this be the only option?)
2) Use Mesh tape or another product or a procedure specifically for this problem*.
3) Or the lazy man's way out by just covering it up with a piece of molding but making it look like the art/part of the molding design?

Yes
They have the setting time on them... if you mix different times they may go to the averaged time, but I always figure how much I need based on the smaller time... and ALWAYS clean ALL the old hot mud completely out before mixing another batch.
Wonder why mesh tape requires fast setting compound. What is the cause of the cracking vs when you use paper tape and joint compound.

From my understanding it's because premix shrinks as it dries which pulls the mesh tape into the joint making it weak where hot mud slightly expands as it cures which gives it more strength.
Regular mud is very soft, even after it sets. It can easily be scratched with a fingernail and will dissolve if wet. There is just no structural strength to it. Hot mud cures in the same way cement does and dries hard.
My only concern is that I have some gaps that need to be prefilled, so if I prefill then put the mesh tape on, I'm pretty much bedding the mesh tape into the prefill. Does this approach make sense for a ceiling repair?
It’s best to prefill with hot mud then the mesh isn’t an issue. But if you have to use mesh in deeper all purpose it should be ok

Been using mesh tape for roughly 15 years,never had a cracked seem before.
Must probably be due to the fact that all our mud supports mesh as we don't use the joint tape like you gents in the States
When you say that you used regular all purpose mud on mesh tape and it failed, can you specify exactly what happened that you consider it failing? Did it crack?
Yes, I installed about 250 feet of mesh tape on a remodel once and ended up with about 20 or 30 feet of cracking.
BTDT. The ordinary mud has no tensile strength, so the crack can (and just about always does) move. I spent more than an hour prepping a long crack in a bedroom ceiling. It looked good until morning, when the crack was back in full strength. If I get painting done this month I will have a go at it with mesh tape and hot mud; I have successfully fixed an L shaped crack in the kitchen ceiling with the good stuff.

This is a tape gun made just for mesh, so it's a little different. Might not work on a tape gun but let me know if you try it.

Forgive me but what is the purpose of tape or mesh take. Whenever my VERY inexperienced self is filling a seam or crack I just slap the mud on (my own walls) and sand it down and paint it.
It’s kind of like the same reason they put rebar in concrete, it keeps it from cracking and makes it much stronger.

Just never use mesh tape in corners , I've seen it burst open. Paper tape for corners only.

I learned the hard way when I was younger. I tried mesh with blue lid and made one hell of a mess. Generally, I simply apply the sticky side of mesh down and apply a light coat of easy sand 20. But on some applications I apply a light coat of hot mud and imbed my mesh. In these instances the mesh tape simply will not stick hard enough to the surface to get any mud on it without the tape sliding and kinking all over the place. In these situations I’ve tried wiping the surface with a sponge and warm water and dried the surface to get good mesh adhesion, and yes, the mesh was fresh. To no avail, on some surfaces the mesh won’t stay put. This is when I apply a thin coat of hot mud to make the mesh stick. Anyone else run into this?

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY peel it off? How do you peel off mesh tape? Its not paper. I peeled the paper off in areas where i still have it. Do i put hot mud right on the peel? Or do i fill a little and apply tape on top of mud. I see you stated you should barely see the tape when finishing with mud.

I don’t use mesh too often, which means the adhesive often dries. 🙁 I have to embed then or take the time to go to the store.
Yeah that works. I usually spray adhesive on anyway because it makes it stick even better and eliminates wrinkling, coming loose etc.

It’s not required, but it helps it not fall off the wall before you mud it, and minimizes wrinkles
