- To many it's nothing more than a way of heating your home. To me it's an opportunity to refill my tanks while taking a step back from the stressors of the day. Taking one of nature's resources and processing it into something as simple as a piece of firewood to provide heat over the long winter months gives many the same feeling I get with a sense of pride and satisfaction. As the world gets busier and our lives are ever inundated with technology, it's nice to be able to step back once in a while and do something simple like splitting firewood.

Just a suggestion…you maybe already do this, but if not, you should adjust the wedge cylinder so it fully retracts when you are finished splitting. This will prevent the exposed cylinder from potentially pitting when not in use.

I thought that too. I was also thinking maybe put a collapsible boot something on the ram for moisture.
I definitely wouldn’t be too thrilled to buy logs like that. But you’re right, the Axis is fun to run. The log deck definitely looks nice. If you are working large rounds maybe move the Axis over a little bit so you can easily roll the large rounds straight to the lift. Lowering the splitting wedge is also a nice safety feature I touched on in a video the other day. Makes it harder to get your hand in between the round and wedge while wrestling large rounds.

I split and burnt wood for over 33 years. The only heat we had was wood heat. Fir was east splitting. Pine was another story!
I hear ya there. I do enjoy getting a good mixture wherever I can but then again that hard maple is great stuff to burn and split

hi there good set up .just a thought to chew on you have the sawmill , i sawed some pine boards 1/2 x wide and made my sides on some cages 2+ feet taller , if your tractor can pick them up makes a bigger box . the fronts i only raise them a foot , then take those out as i use the wood .. well done , best to all john

Yard trees always seem to have surprises. I still have a piece of pecan with a 3x1/4 inch bolt in it sitting on a table next to my smoker. I didn't find it until the round was split. The saw only missed it by less than an inch.
I do like the way you have so much control over sizing your firewood. That would be great for a tent stove. Good vid. Thanks.

I keep a Gallon of cheap bar oil by the conveyor on my Axis and dribble oil on the chain periodically. Makes it a little quieter also.

That sure is a game changer. Get that Lanox as previously mentioned and coat that entire machine. You can spray it on anything. The chain and that threaded rod will luv you for it.

So much fun with that Axis! It finally froze enough to use my new vertical splitter without tearing up the woodyard yesterday.The pinpoint precision is the bomb. I had a 24" ash that fell a couple years ago that i put through the splitter yesterday....without having to lift any rounds! Being able to cut off the parts that were a bit punky allowed me to get the 85% of usable wood out of that tree with precision!
I know the feeling there Earl. Those big rounds sure are easy to get around now with the vertical splitter.

It would be nice if they made a pivot for the conveyor so you could change the direction just enough to fill 3 or 4 ibc totes before having to move them
Hey there Steve, I find by putting 4 IBC cages together and aiming the conveyor for the centre of them I can fill 4 that way. I’m still practicing with angle on the conveyor but I’m thinking 6 cages may be possible with practice

I really like your set up and I'll have to say to your pretty good at sharpening a chainsaw. It was throwing a lot of big chips haha and I have one of those little moisture meters similar to what you have really works well

No snow here today. Just a skiff I’d say. I’m hoping for a bit more though to fire up the snow machines
I am amazed each time I take the ashes out and there are lag bolts nails and iron junk in the ashes. all stuff that I did not hit with the chainsaw. I get wood from pretty deep in the forest and it goes to show that it was not always forest, at some time it was a farm.
I can just about imagine the near misses I"ve had with the sawmill and chainsaw. Knock on wood I don't hit anything soon haha
I'm just wondering how the log deck would work for slab wood. I would like to build one as a multipurpose for logs and slab wood. You got the perfect set up for the firewood. And now the only thing left to do is at the mill yard and try to figure out the slab wood situation. Thats where my problem comes in, where to stack and where to cut it up for firewood or for what ever. Keep the ideals coming, you don't know how much you helped me. Thank you and great job on the log deck and the processing firewood.
I think it would work great Noel. Think I want to build one at the sawmill as well. Yeah that slab wood situation is something that's been ongoing for years. Need to address it before long for sure. I'm glad I could help and I appreciate all your support
The more that I see of the Axis, the more that I like it. No changing from the straight cutter to the 4-way to the 6-way and back. You get the size of split wood that you want without lifting the log and repositioning, just turn it while the table holds the weight.
It will be interesting to see you split some larger rounds when you get them.
This must be a wonderful winter. No bugs, not so much snow that you have to spend time moving snow, ground is frozen so no more mud, not so cold that you have icicles hanging off your face. What more could a fellow ask for?

Hello Sandy. I loved the variety of creative camera angles. They made the video interesting and provided the viewer with an understanding and appreciation of how well your set-up works.
There seems to be very little debris using the vertical splitter. A few pieces bounced over your totes. Perhaps, a third tote could be installed behind the other 2.
Be very careful with your hand placement so close to the wedge.

Does your moisture reader have different settings for different types of wood?

The Axis is one of those machines that I didn't know what I was missing until I tried it.

Even the most tedious job can be fun if you have the right tools for it .. I don't have such a great wood splitter .. envy you 😉 .. my firewood gets done the old fashioned way - ax, sledghammer and wedges .. it's tiring and time consuming as hell, but on the other hand, this way you'll get all the heat out of the firewood .. because the stacking will come next ... :))
Nothing wrong with that. You're getting more bang for your buck with heating you many times over haha
You can take four basket and put them together and fill them up at the same time you will need to put the first two just over half way under the conveyor but keeping the center of the conveyor and then the next two right behind them so that after it fills the first two the wood starts going into the next two you will need to Practice to see where they work the best
That is a good setup for sure. I"ve done 4 before and it works quite well. Like you mentioned it's all about the sweet spot for the centre
Hope to see more on that moisture meter n where you got it n where should dry fire wood be 15% or so?
Generally I think 20% or less is considered seasoned firewood but in my case I just dry it for a year and then I call it good. Since I've never had a moisture meter before I just assume that's below the 20%

That log table would be great. I don't think I would want to go back to the old way or even with the lift. Seems like winter is mild but not enough to change much because it'll hit hard all at once anyway. It's a shame but if you're buying firewood sticks you'll be getting the worse most crooked stuff that would've been junk, but I wouldn't want to pay for the premium stuff either. Have a good one, be safe. You've probably got most of next years wood split and drying now I would think.
Hey Brad. I was fortunate I found a good log supplier now who gives me good firewood logs. The old log supplier was a great person who I dealt with several times but after getting the most recent junk logs I had to change. I'm ahead with firewood for sure. Likely sell some now

Hi Tom. The Holz has been acting up on me lately to be honest. This bar is a different bar that used to be for Stilhl but I drilled some new post holes for the husky

Hi Billy. Unforutnatley it is too big to fit in there comfortably. So tight that I was worried about bumping the sides and damaging things. Hope the weather down south is nice. I sure wouldn't mind a trip sound right about now haha
You will have to look for a old buzz saw this way you can get away from using the chainsaw oil in the gas oil in the bar! it takes a flat file to sharpen it. lots of video's on them usually can pick them up for under five hundred dollars some run on belts and some run with a PTO. They did a nice job on the split-er any improvements you think it could have?
Those buzz saws are neat for sure. I always thought they'd be handy out at m sawmill as well for the slab wood

You got a damn good set up, one i wish i had years ago when I split wood. A log deck upgrade idea to help when you're moving the larger rounds. Build an insert, couple sawhorses and 4x4s should help fill the voids in the deck and allow you to roll the rounds after cutting. Quick, dirty, movable, optional, and 100% backseat wood working.
I like that extra log deck idea for the big rounds. I sure have some doozies coming up.
Just received my Axis Thursday evening. I live in soggy north central Ohio unfortunately , so as I can't get back in woods and fields right now all I can do is wait for everything to freeze up. It is supposed to be winter right? Sheez I ordered it 4/4/23 now I'm waiting on fickle mother nature.

The table is right around 35 or 36” which seems to be perfect height I find. The log deck is the best thing I’ve. Built in a while for sure!

Good question. I find I don’t have a huge abundance of good size hardwood trees so I wanted to help supplement the trees I did have on my land
After looking at the price of the new splitter, I am assuming that you sell firewood by the tote; just curious what they cost?
Firewood in my area goes for $420 CDN per cord which is $314 US per Cord
It appears you get lot less slash with this type of splitter. I watched some horizontal splitters that go back and forth on same block then at the end, half the block ends up in slash......
One other unseen thing is, when or if you ever get a hard splitting block thats frozen, then you come up to full pressure, if the stick goes BANG, the split pieces should go to the sides and not at you.
On my combo horizontal/vertical splitter I had some hard splitting wood that when it does split it splits with a BANG and hits me in the stomach, lot of times I stand way back so I can just barely reach the lever just so the stick wont hit me..........
That's a great point I"m finding out after a bit of time on this as well. Next to no slash at all with the vertical splitters. Great point about the direction of the splits. You're absolutely right about the way the splits tend to fall. Always to the right and left which is nice

At 21k for the machine , why not a real wood processor for 10k , I feel it’s not worth it because you still have to cut the log before processing it , your tough?
Fair question. I’ve never seen a processor for $10k that makes as much firewood like this and I’ve seen all the major manufacturers processors

@@sawingwithsandy commercial firewood is a Co. That has hundreds of customers and sells 1000s of cords annually. They would never deliver wood like that to a customer. In fact any small “mom & pop” Co. Wouldn’t last long doing business like that. At least not where I reside.
