Great review Sandy! When I sharpen my woodland mills blades with the RS8 model, it takes approximately 20 minutes a blade. The RS30 looks like it would cut that time in half.
Great video, I purchased a CBN wheel a year ago and swapped out the drive motor and installed a speed controller,. Now about 5 minutes to sharpen blades
Awesome video, Sandy. I had picked up the base model along with a few other accessories during the package deal they had at the end of last year. I think the only thing that you should work on is asking Woodland Mills to send you a more comfortable stool!🤣
Thanks for sharing, Sandy. The new sharpener is awesome. Appreciate your letting us see your experience and expertise. Stay safe, healthy, strong and successful. ☝🙏🙌💪
For all that you have promoted Woodland Mills, it's great that they have given you something to review in return! On a different note, those CBN wheels have also caught my attention, in that there's no fine tuning needed and they supposedly last a very long time, making them appear to be a really good value!
great review. When I got my WOodmizer many years ago, they gave me a morning briefing on sharpening and milling. It took me a while to figure out the sharpenning and get better at it. Initially I would sharpened the tooth on both side, missing the gullet. It did not take long that my tooth height got very low and, I believe the gullet was not deep enough to carry the sawdust. I also got better at lightely grinding the gullet, removing the microcracks. That allowed me to sharpen my blades up to 10 times (my record was 13 sharpenings on a few blades) before they would break. I would used 4 blades a day on an 8-hour day, changing them every 2 hours as recommended by WM, unless I hit a nail or rock. I would sharpen in the evening and could sharpen and set my 4 blades in 1 hour. The WM sharpener had a magnet that I would put on the blade and once it went around and back it would go by a sensor shutting down the saharpener. While one blade was sharpening I could set another one. Cheers
@@sawingwithsandy I do not have my mill anymore but yes, I would set after every sharpening and have to admit that I never had any problems with blades, aside from the odd break. Once, a brand new blade broke at the weld on first use. I contacted WM to inquire as to what could have happened. To my surprise, the following week I received a box of 10 blades, free of charge. I was using only WM blades. That was 30 years ago but still have great memories of it all.
MM77 Approved 👍🏼👍🏼……………………………………………………………Thanks Sandy, I’m glad that you are showing there’s more to owning a sawmill than cutting a tree and cutting it into lumber. There is a lot of behind the scenes things that need to be done to keep the mill running!
Hi buddy how are ya? Sorry I’ve been quiet a while! Been busy sawing! And working around the house. So much to do!!! I bought the rs30 about a year ago, but I haven’t used it yet. I bought a bunch of blades on sale so I’ve been using them. I hope to start using the sharpener. I bought a 12v 30amp power supply to run it while I’m in the shop, and run on the battery when I have to. Thank you for running a side by side comparison, I believe you are the first to do it. As always buddy GOD bless you and you family. I’ve been watching you channel now for 7 years I think hehehe you are our saw mill guru!
Hey I'm doing great thanks! I hear ya there. Tonnes to do at times it seems but never enough time in the day to do it. You'll really like the RS30 PRO sharpener.
Good comparison Sandy. I've been waiting for them to come out with one that will sharpen 4 degree blades as we use almost exclusively 10 and 4 degree blades...hopefully someday, hint hint Woodland Mills if you are watching! 😁
I wonder if you could angle the sharpener head just a bit more than the existing 7 degree slot on the back. Guess the trouble would be ensuring the angle is exactly 4 degrees
Good afternoon, Sandy! The speed of the newer model is for every one grind of the older model. The newer model does five. Impressive! You won't be cleaning the shop as much, lol! Greetings from Peterborough.
Good evening Sandy that new sharpener is a lot faster yes no more cleaning shope while sharpening lol you will not keep up pace doing the tooth setting you have a pile of blade that are sharp waiting on you you to set them lol that was a great way to compare them now ready to do more milling keep the saw dust going have a great day
Yeah if I get a big pile of blades going that need tooth setting that would be the slow down for sure. I'm fortunate that I don't often find that I need to set the teeth unless I hit something solid in a log.
Nice review Sandy. You will still have to clean the cubic boron nitride wheel occasionally (you will learn when with time and expirence) Thecbn wheel will load up with swarf over time and cause excess heat on your teeth drawing the temper and thus they will be softer and full quickly when sawing lumber. Woodlands probably provided you with a dressing stick. Wishing you all the very best as always.
Howdy Sandy Wow what a difference in speed… And the new type of grinding wheel saves time as well.. So I did read a lot of people asking if there was a converter for 22 volt.. Suggestion… if you have a portable power station I do believe they have a 12 volt plug… Even if it was a cigarette plug just put an end on your power supply a run it that way..Power it with solar panels… Just my 2cents .. Thanks for sharing… I really wish I had a mill 😢 Cheers my friend
Good afternoon Sandy! Not long after I got the rs8, they came out with the rs30. I felt a little buyers remorse because I do my research to get the best equipment that my pocket can afford. After watching this, yes the rs30 has a couple more bells and whistles, but I believe the end result is the same. I'm a domestic engineer( that's a fancy title for a woman in her mid forties that stays home😁) and have plenty of time to watch the slowest NASCAR race in history! Wonder if the CBN wheel is compatible with the rs8🤔 Thanks for the demo, very helpful! 👍👋
Hey there Jill! I know what ya mean there. I try to be absolutely certain when getting a piece of equipment that it's the best possible setup for me as well. I'm pretty certain the CBN wheel can be put on the rs8 model which is great as I think it's far superior to the other wheel from what I could tell . I"ll be sure to update everyone long term on the wheel differences and whether I still like the CBN wheel after using it for a long time. Hope you have a great weekend!
Is there an attachment like a wire wheel that would clean the blade from the sap buildup which seems to bind or slow up its entrance to the sharpening wheel? Your videos seem to make my sludge always taste better. 😀
You didn't talk about the auto stop? Do you recommend cleaning the blade before sharpening ,I just finish setting up my new pro and enjoy your tips, thanks!
Hi Wayne! I’m pretty new to the new sharpener so I haven’t noticed any cleaning that’s needed for the blade yet. The auto stop is handy but I don’t use it often as I typically just mark the blade with a marker and stop it once it gets back to it
@@sawingwithsandy I just did my first three blades and worked with auto stop and needed to form it a bit to get the correct contact with the toggle switches, it works great, set it and forget it!
Very interesting that’s a nice new machine they have eh. I have a local guy do mine, he has a woodmizer automatic setup, seems to do a great job. How are you making out with the ripper 37’s ? I got some they are great but boy if you hit metal it rips the teeth off and there goes the blade. They do cut well though. How do you like sharpening them? Take care great job Sandy.
Working with sharp tools cause less accidents. Dull knives in a kitchen make food preparations handled much better with sharp knives, same with saw mill blades. It's a lot of work that pays off well.
@@sawingwithsandy I have 2 chainsaw sharpeners on my set up. I sharpen with a CBN wheel and use the normal wheel on the 2nd on profiled for setting the rakers.
Do either of these sharpeners offer a regular A/C power unit? I suspect many sawyers aren't taking their blade sharpeners out in the field beside their sawmills.
I haven’t seen a a/c power unit for these but I often hook up a battery charger to the battery while running it so I don’t have to ever recharge the battery
Hello Mr. Sandy, both sharpeners are good, both do the job well, just depends the justification of throwing a few hundred bucks more ion the ledger under operational expense, to me slow is good, I get a few more sips of SLUDGE before it gets done.
Good on you for having a bit of time to clean up the shop a bit. So hard to get to when the weather is fit for work, right? P.S. As for the sharpener, it a be on my wish list for "someday." Thanks
Will my RS8 model grinder sharpen the ripper 37 blades without needing any extra parts? Such as a different profile cam or a profile plate to change the profile of the grinding wheel?..
Good question. They do offer a Ripper 37 specific profile cam for the RS8 model that I got after buying my RS8 to ensure it follows the blade profile for the Ripper 37 right down through the gullet nicely. You could use the stock cam however on the Ripper 37 but it may or may not be able to perfectly match the stock Ripper 37 blade profile
Sandy, will that auto-stop clamp work on the fast model? If so, you can still set it and forget it, come back i 15 minutes, change to the next blade, set it and forget it for 15 minutes. Working in the shop is a good time for sharpening. When the machine auto-stops, you can work on other things and not have to keep one eye on the sharpener. What's Woodland Mills going to say when you "Accidentally" send your old one back and keep the new one?! Listening to them, it sounded like the new machine sharpens four times faster than your old one. Is there a power converter available, AC to DC, so you can plug it into the wall instead of use a 12 volt battery?
Hey Carl. Yeah that clamp that came with the RS8 model also comes with the RS30 Pro model to stop the sharpener without having to sit there and watch it. I don't know how much faster it is but I bet it's at least 4x faster for sure. There's no power converter sold with it that I'm aware of so I often use my battery charger
