Choosing A Yamaha S7X Grand Piano for the Australian Institute of Music

The Australian Institute of Music's new Yamaha S7X Grand Piano was selected from two pianos at the Yamaha Piano Centre in Melbourne for the AIM Sydney campus. Associate Head of Learning and Teaching and accomplished pianist Greg Coffin played the two potential pianos at the Centre to make the decision. The new S7X Grand Piano will be utilised by students across AIM's departments, from Contemporary and Composition through to our Classical cohort.

We didn't get to see which one you chose, or why. Were the two S7X pianos very similar, or was there quite a difference between them?

IF i culd afford one. IF I had the room for one....i'd get a S7X. OVER a Bechstein, BOsendorfer, Shimmel, ....Steinway....The Bechsteins come "close" but lack the "clarity" i'd want and lacks the "icy crystaline highs" of a C7X or S7X....and for over 450k LESS..maybe $100k less...for a comparable size piano. I just don't hear $50-100k MORE or better sound....

The harmonic richness of the Bechsteins is amazing, and they give an amazing unique feeling with sustained thick chords. But I also chose SX over them because of the crystalline highs, perhaps simpler than the Bechstein and decaying a bit faster but for the same reason "cutting it through" and conveying better the singing messages. If i could have a second piano I would buy a Bechstein. v=oGZU4Fvp-OE by Stu is a very good video to understand Bechsteins.
